The analysis of two novels by Rachel Jardim, Vazio pleno: relatório do cotidiano (1976) e Inventário das cinzas (1980) aims at demonstrating the emphasis of these works on an intimist character. Such an aspect arises throughout the exploration of the biographical space – which becomes evident in the implications of the incorporation of autobiographical traces in the narrative tissue – and also springs up throughout the elements that establish a dialectical relationship within the pair exterior/interior. The present work is based on the survey and the analysis of structural elements and common themes found in the two novels, fact that supported the elaboration of a methodological process designed on the distribution of the data in “cells” and “motives”. These motives are gathered in two blocks, called “cells”, which unite to form a mosaic made of itemized matters that revolve around intimacy. The detailed analysis of the two cells is distributed in two chapters under the titles of Traços autobiográgicos and A dialética exterior/interior. Due to the fact that the concept of intimacy, still slightly investigated by the literary Brazilian historiography, receives many different names, we look forward to its definition as well as to the demarcation of its main features. We also focus on the ways the artist novel and some principles of the Romantic aesthetics related to the writing of the “I” frame the corpus mainly in what concerns the thematization of the pertinent procedures linked to the literary acts of reading and writing. The analysis is grounded on concepts taken from the Literary Theory and from distinct theorist ́s stands not only in what concerns to intimacy in Brazilian Literature but also related to Rachel Jardim ́s place within the Brazilian literary history. The analytical proceedings show the connection between Rachel Jardim ́s works and the intimist thread in literature within the scope of the literary Brazilian system.

Full textWe live in an information society where we are constantly surrounded by the "written" language and therefore the demands on the individuals writing are very high. One of the issues in many schools has been how to motivate the students writing. This undergraduate thesis involves motivation and the purpose this project is to investigate how different teachers motivate their students writing. For this purpose four teachers working at the same school (grade 4-6) were interviewed. Many of the theories from the theoretical section have been used in order to understand and analyse the information gained from the teachers.
Earlier research indicates that lack of motivation blocks learning while other scientists claim that children are seeking creatures by nature and motivation is not necessary. When it comes to writing, research indicates that it is nearly always the teacher who decides what the students should write and how the text should bee. Lpo 94 advocates student influence since education should confirm the students’ demands and conditions.
Judging from the result of the teachers’ interviews one can claim factors as boring writing assignments, unclear instructions, lack of imagination, decreasing reading aloud and too much influence by computers as some of the reasons for lack of motivation concerning students’ writing. This study further indicates that although the teachers working at the same school different strategies are used for motivating students writing. Some of the teachers use pictures in order to expound on their students imagination. Others give a beginning of a text so that the students can build on it and complete the story. A constantly recurring pattern is that the teachers don’t allow their students to decide what to write about in order not to create too much confusion. Many teachers claim that lack of time is also a big problem.
Codeluppi, Martina. "Writing Memory : global Chinese Literature in Polyglossia." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018USPCA067/document.
Full textThis thesis aims to investigate the representation of fictional memories in the context of global Chinese literature, showing how displacement and translingualism affect the works by authors from the Mainland and from overseas, who express their creativity in different languages. The four novels Zha gen (Striking Root) by Han Dong, Balzac et la petite tailleuse chinoise (Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress) by Dai Sijie, The Crazed by Ha Jin, and Rou zhi tu (Beijing Coma) by Ma Jian are compared as reflections of individual memories of the Cultural Revolution and of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. The first part of the thesis addresses the new theoretical approaches configuring contemporary Chinese literature as a polyglossic and deterritorialised entity. The second part focuses on the analysis of two examples of autofictions, Zha gen and Balzac et la Petite Tailleuse chinoise, comparing their representation of time as reflected in the evolution of the individual. The third part explores the two novels The Crazed and Rou zhi tu, focusing on the spatial character of memory transposed in the form of a fictional témoignage. Finally, the fourth part investigates the interactions between Chinese literature and world literature, placing the cases analysed in a translingual perspective. The comparison between the Chinese, the English and the French versions of the novels shows how deterritorialised memories are modulated through translation and self-translation

Full textThe research takes the writing production of pupils concluding the third grade of high school as analysis object. It had born from my experience in classroom as Portuguese and English teacher. The generating question is about the nature of transformations made by the pupil at the moment of writing his composition out neatly. Mobilizing concepts from the Psychoanalysis, such as alienation and separation (LACAN: 1964), concepts from the Linguistic, such as the Articulation Polyphonic Theory (DUCROT: 1987) and concepts from the Argument Theory (PERELMAN: 2005), I started to investigate the existence of linguisticspeech transformations between the draft and the final version, whose main characteristic is to add value to the argument that was being developed in the draft; and to describe the nature of these transformations (in case that they existed), that pupils concluding high school had been able to make in texts produced in formal context of evaluation. I began with the hypothesis that to write a text with singularity traces demands a \"work of writing\" (expression created by RIOLFI: 2003). To investigate it, I took as analysis object an initial corpus of one thousand five hundred and fifty-eight compositions produced by adolescents on November 10, 2005, at SARESP (an evaluation system of school progress in São Paulo). But I decided to study only the compositions produced by pupils of the third grade of high school, an amount of two hundred and twelve compositions. I had to discard those compositions without a draft (fortyone compositions). Then, I effected a preliminary analysis of one hundred and seventy-one compositions, by analyzing these last mentioned, I verified that about half of the students paid attention to formal aspects (punctuation, orthography, addition of some words, changes of some words for its synonyms, correction of the nominal and verbal agreement etc.). I was convinced that the presence of singularity traces had some relation with the changes made by the pupil at the moment of writing his composition out neatly, then I started to analyze the nature of such linguistic-speech transformations. For this reason, I made a new clipping, from which, remained ninety compositions that are the final corpus of the present research. After concluded the intricate process to constitute the final corpus of this dissertation, a careful analysis of the texts was made. It brought to the surface an evidence: in a general way, when modifying the text, the pupils answered a demand of the other. After I arrived at this evidence, I decided to select only five compositions as examples, they are attached at the end of this work. Therefore, the conclusion that I arrived at is: instead of using the draft as an advantage opportunity to chance the text in order to support an own speech, the pupils preferred to rewrite the text according to the parameters that\'s supposed to be the speech of the other.

Full textThis thesis describes the creative and analytical process I used to develop choreography for three dancers called The Chair_/ An Island. I developed this trio choreography from one fragment of an earlier solo choreography called Chair Experiment, using an aspect of Laban Movement Analysis called "motif writing". I used this method as a score to multiply the original motifs into other bodies/subjects, objects, spaces, and time. My work was done in Brazil in collaboration with two other dancers, Juliana Vicari and Luciana Hoppe. From a post-positivist approach and artistic perspective, this thesis describes features of Laban Movement Analysis and Dance Dramaturgy which enhance the creative process. Both help us to understand possible choices and directions which are available to us when creating a choreography. I conclude that motif writing is efficient as a movement score for dramaturgy composition or reposition and that the use of this procedure encourages the artists for a self revelation. I found the 'reduplication of the Other in myself‘ as a creative potential and affirmative way as a performer.

Full textHaving as a starting point the theme of the body and exploring it through the prism oftechnology, this study depicts its representations in four major texts by Djuna Barnes and GertrudeStein. Starting with Barnes’s The Book of Repulsive Women, the fragmented bodies depicted in thepoems come in dialogue with Dadaists’ mechanomorphic representations of female bodies. Thecollection is seen as a series of tableaux vivants displaying mechanized bodies through the alteringpresence of the El. The discussion, then, moves on to Stein’s Dr. Faustus Lights the Lights andconnections are drawn between the metaphor of electricity and Stein’s cinematic writing. The linkingaspect of this association is the practice of “automatism” that Stein explored through William James, which leads to the point that her work is an “automaton” body of text. Following this, Stein’s Wars IHave Seen, is examined as a linguistic experiment compared to Bob Carlton Brown’s conceptualwriting. Stein as a linguistic surgeon operates on the text’s body with the help of word prosthesis. Thelast work in this study is Barnes’s The Antiphon, which is explored via the conceptual correlation ofBarnes’s violated body with her autobiographical textual body, examined through decoding Barnes’smetatheatrical devices. In the final chapter, these two writers are reexamined through their personalembodiment in the texts and through the various manifestations of the themes of body and technology

Full textThe subject of non acquisition of reading and writing is a recurring and significant problem in the Brazilian public school and requests more investigation. The focus of the research was the situation of non reading acquisition by children in literacy process. It is related to children that don't present any kind of alteration or jeopardize of organic nature or special educational needs and, however they don't acquire reading during the literacy process, although they learn how to "draw the letters". These children are found in groups where most of them achieve literacy. The theory of the developmental teaching establishes that, to enter in real learning activity, it is necessary the presence of an appropriate reason (motive) to this activity. Based in this and in other assumptions of this theory, it was formulated the following research subjects: How does teaching of reading process happen at school? What events contribute to keep students without acquisition of the reading process? How is non acquisition of reading related to the student's motive in learning activity? How can the teacher interfere to change the child's motive in order to result in learning of reading and writing process? Would an organization of teaching with focus in the motive promote the acquisition of reading for those students? What would be the result of a reading learning process by developmental teaching with emphasis in the student's motives? A bibliographical revision was made and it didn't point any study under the theoretical focus approach proposed in that research, that is, under the theory of the developmental teaching. Therefore, the general objective of the research was to investigate how the teacher can interfere in the student's motive to learn to read during the literacy process at school. The specific objectives were: - to describe the process of teaching of reading and writing in the school; - to analyze the teacher's actions in relation to the non readers students; - to analyze how can the acquisition of reading process be influenced by the organized teaching, based in the theory of the developmental teaching and with focus in the student's motive. The research was accomplished at a municipal school of Rio Verde (GO) city, having a qualitative approach, under historical-cultural focus, being characterized as formative didactic experiment, based on the theory of the developmental teaching of Davydov. The instruments of data collection were direct non participating observation, semistructured interviews and documental analysis. The subjects were the teacher and the students of a literacy group and, in elapsing of the research, the focus of the formative didactic experiment relapsed on a student that kept in a not learning situation. The main results of the research appear to be that developmental teaching has promoted the acquisition of reading process by the child which has failed the literacy both in regular group as in a special group.

Full textIn the wake of decolonization, colonialist narratives have systematically been rewritten from indigenous perspectives. This phenomenon is referred to as “the Empire writes back to the centre” – a trend that asserted itself in late twentieth-century postcolonial criticism. The aim of such acts of writing back is to read colonialist texts in a Barthesian way inside-out or à l’envers, to deconstruct the Orientalist and colonialist dogmas, and eventually create a dialogue where there was only a monologue. Turning the colonial text inside-out and rereading it through the lens of a later code allows the postcolonial text to unlock the closures of its colonial precursor and change it from the inside. Under this critical scholarship, Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness (1899) has been a particularly influential text for Chinua Achebe and V. S. Naipaul. Their novels Things Fall Apart (1958) and A Bend in the River (1979) can be seen as a rewriting of Conrad’s novella. However, before examining their different rewriting strategies, it would be fruitful to locate them within the postcolonial tradition of rewriting. While Achebe clearly stands as the leading figure of the movement, the Trinidadian novelist is, in fact, difficult to pigeonhole. Does Naipaul write back to, that is criticize, or does he rewrite, and in a way adopt and justify, imperial ideology? Since not all rewriting involves writing back in terms of anti-colonial critique, Naipaul’s position continues to be explored as the enigmatic in-betweenness and double-edgedness of an “insider” turned “outsider.” Taking cognizance of these different critical perceptions can become a way to effectively highlight Achebe’s “(mis)-reading” and Naipaul’s “(mis)-appropriation” of Conrad, a way to set the framework for the simulated conversation this thesis seeks to create between the three novelists

Full textStarting 1919, the surrealistic writings and representations offer new visions of reality, dependent from an original perception. Moving away from academism and imitation, they explore the unconscious, open by a psychanalytic Freudian field in order to express hidden thoughts of their consciousness. The result of their experimentations and of their semantic games allow leeway for absurd representations where objects and their definitions do not coincide anymore. It is from this dissociation between the idea of the object and its representation that comic and tragic dimensions are born, from the real and the unreal. Surrealism transcends and transgresses alternatively the norms commonly adopted by society. It is from this subversion that new images appear. Surrealistic poetry reveals an interior reality that is created by the imagination and by an exterior reality shaped by unconscious thoughts. Thus an imbalance arises and semiotic hints allow one to discover the real nature of each representation. Sometimes burlesque sometimes sublime, the representation of life and death takes on a significance still unknown by the grand public. By entering the maze of the psychanalytic analysis, the surrealists created a pathway and emancipated themselves from previous artistic movements

Full textWe would like to develop the idea according to which Marguerite Duras is a painter of the language. By focusing us on the relationship between the writing and painting, we will endeavour to locate and analyze the evoked or invented tables and the images worked in works. In order to clarify the complex intertextuality which enters within the various networks of representation and on the basis of any representation. Without claiming with exhaustiveness, one can try to give an outline of this presence of painting to the background of the reflexion durassienne. How painting made it text ? And which is the stake ? It will also be a question of studying the role and the significance of painting in the novel in order to compare the statute of painting in work with that of painting. Part of this study will treat painting like sociological, intellectual and historical phenomenon (the esthetics question). Moreover, research will be centered on the bonds between the cinema and painting the study will be developed on the following points : emissions, and criticisms on the author in order to trace an overall framework of the elements in connection with the subject. We will approach in particular the presentation of the theoretical and methodological debate on the relationship between the cinema and painting. Work will weave close links between visual art and the language. A part will analyze the relationship between the cinema and painting on a significant film corpus, starting from its beginning to its last film going back to 1979. Our study will be a research and an analysis of the occurrences of painting and their significances in the filmic speech durassien. The speech on painting being confronted with several problems

Full textBefore being used in literature, diglossia was defined in 1928 by the philologist Jean Psichari as the “coexistence of two rival languages in a same nation”. Strengthened by the sociolinguistics, the concept of diglossia was imported in literature without being substantially transformed. In this thesis, diglossia represents the balance of power existing in the case of multilingualism as in the Maghreb. Beyond the linguistic tensions linked to some geopolitical events, diglossia shows the way some authors, as Assia Djebar and Claude Ollier, express these complex events through their works and ways of writing. It also shows the way they leave space for the Other in their works. The Other may be the stranger outside as well as the otherness into themselves, without forgetting the inaudible language of the body that the writing tries to express. The literary diglossia allows focus on fundamental cultural and ideological facts which are implied in the language. It seems to scramble our cultural references, moulding the authors’ languages into a literary language, far from the everyday speech. All the Assia Djebar’s works studied throughout this thesis belong to the Quatuor (still uncompleted) – L’amour, la Fantasia (1985), Ombre sultane (1987) and Vaste est la prison (1995) – except the novel entitled Loin de Médine (1991). Claude Ollier’s are the following: La mise en scène (1958), Marrakch Medine (1979), Une histoire illisible (1986) and Truquage en amont (1992)
Nechita, Alina-Laura. "Le corps dans l'œuvre romanesque de Philip Roth." Thesis, Université Paris-Saclay (ComUE), 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017SACLV055.
Full textPhilip Roth's fiction has always been preoccupied with the question of the body. In his novels, the body of flesh and blood, the social body, the monstrous body, the abject body, the sickened body, all become avatars of our individual and collective existence. How should one interpret this obsessive presence of the human body in Philip Roth’s fiction? This transdisciplinary dissertation studies the evolution of the body within the context of novels concerned with existential and creational crises. Philip Roth’s fiction may be divided into four stages: first, the insurgence of an existential impasse; second, the opening toward the other and the world, followed, thirdly, by an attempt at freely reinventing oneself, and ending with an awareness of the inevitability of death. While the body appears, at first, as a heavy burden to bear, true encounter with the Other becomes the only means of lightening its load. True freedom only materializes within the textual space where the verb replaces the flesh. This study of the body in Philip Roth’s novels traces, therefore, the gradual dematerialization of the body of flesh into the body of the text

Full textIn the present study, we analyze all the novels of Didier van Cauwelaert, a writer from Nice, in aim to demonstrate the different aspects of his writing and their relation with his personality. Our thesis tries to find answers to many questions as: is the writing of DVC a writing of birth or of death? What are the particularities of his novels’ universe? How do this universe and the writing take shape? What kind of space the novels constitute? This research is composed of three parts: the first, Cauwalaert’s signature, studies the stylistic particularities of the writer. We develop his style, the piecemeal, playful, musical writing, and we show how he stylizes his texts by developing possible texts. We analyze also the psychocritic nucleus revealing his personal myth and we study the multiple sub-genres of his novels: the fantastic, comic and police ones. The second part is entitled the inter actions around the text. It envisages the relations uniting the writer to his texts, to the lector and to other writers. We ask the genesis of this fictional universe and the image of the writer through his novels. The third and last part, the massif of novels, aims the casting, the distribution of roles, the fiction and the form of narration. This part of the study envisages the diachronic progression of all the novels. We look into the evolution of the writer and his relationship with his time. Finally, we analyze the space of the novels that gives structure to a novel-space which is a universe of hope and emotion where the narrative instances melt and the perception creates a miniature world
Servant, Barbara. "Légèreté pensive et énergie romanesque : Italo Calvino, Iris Murdoch et Raymond Queneau." Thesis, Rennes 2, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019REN20045.
Full text"Thoughtful lightness" is an expression used by Italo Calvino in one of his Lezioni americane conferences in order to define a fundamental writing principle. Distinguished from entertainment and frivolity, according to the author, thoughtful lightness is by no means passive, but on the contrary active, dense, and concise. Above all, it is indistinguishable from an ability to set the gaze in motion and must thus make it possible to translate the reality in all its complexity and energy. This dissertation then proposes to study how lightness contributes to the common project of Calvino and two major writers of European literature of the last century - Raymond Queneau and Iris Murdoch - of making the novel an "open" encyclopaedia, characterized by an ethical commitment: to say the world without confining it with a univocal reading grid or within a narcissistic ego. At the same time essayists and novelists, these three authors constantly theorize their own practice while seeking to maintain a critical distance from it. The thoughtful lightness then induces what could be called a "narrative energy". Defined as an active force, energy here characterizes the intensity of the text, its vitality, and the novel's ability to apprehend and make the reader apprehend the world differently. Thus coupled, "thoughtful lightness" and "fictional energy" make it possible to shed light on the way the works are made, while at the same time raising both poetic and philosophical issues
Simon, Alexandre. "Scepticisme et politesse dans l'œuvre de David Hume." Thesis, Besançon, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016BESA1005/document.
Full textThis study deals with the relationship between scepticism and politeness in the works of David Hume, in order to contribute to the understanding of Hume’s art of writing from a philosophical point of view. From the Treatise of human nature (1739-1740) to the later works (the Essays, the two Enquiries, the Four dissertations and the Dialogues concerning natural religion), one can observe an obvious change in the manner of communicating the science of man to the public of the eighteenth century. Partly inspired by the philosophical journalism of Addison and Steele and designed to make abstract philosophy accessible to the public of conversation, Hume’s art of writing shows a progressive integration of the culture of politeness with scepticism and its expression. But this certainly does not mean that Hume would have left the speculative ambitions of the Treatise for worldly success. On the contrary, as an expression of the good humour which characterizes the « true sceptic » as well as a literary preparation of the critical reception of philosophy in the Republic of Letters, Hume’s art of writing tries to give to the science of man, considered as a sceptical – and new – science, the public that it needs for its foundation. Hence mitigated scepticism appears essentially as a polite scepticism, the best way for « metaphysics » to enter upon the secure path of civilization

Full textEugene O’Neill’s drama is generally approached from heterogeneous perspectives: if there is a critical consensus concerning O’Neill’s canonical position in American theater, it is probably due to the critics’ tendency to neglect the early plays. This dissertation aims to reconstruct the link between the plays and the shifting contexts in which they were elaborated in order to highlight O’Neill’s aesthetics of contradiction fueled by an unsatisfied quest for belonging. Instead of positing that O’Neill’s achievement lies in the late plays, this study aims at evaluating the early plays, as they constitute the matrix of his writing. The quest for belonging runs through O’Neill’s plays, which also show a constant tension between avant-garde and commercial stage, individual and collective behavior. O’Neill’s plays are difficult to apprehend, as they are extremely heterogeneous. But as a whole, they appear directed, however, toward one single pursuit: the quest for belonging which characterizes the context of production as much as the writing. By considering the plays as a whole, unified by the impossible quest for a community, one may attempt a new approach to O’Neill’s works, as the contradictions inherent in the writing show how O’Neill’s body of work produces its own ambiguity and interest

In this sense, it is important to analyze how Brazilian literature presented the relation between identity and memory, in competition with other forms of discourse

Full textInheriting the unpublished story of a concentration camp experience implies accepting the moral duty of its interpretation. Comparing it with two others literary works on the same topic allows to build a reflection about the inevitable transformation undergone by a traumatic experience when you attempt to verbalize it. In effect, that comes down to say and convey an aporia. That is why resorting successfully to metaphor seems to be the most efficient way to endow this piece of life, unspeakable by itself, with a convincing rhetoric. Therefore, it is necessary to transpose the experience in order to manage to tell it, but also to make visible a past that comes back to conscience only in the form of pictures, while asserting its references to a reality inscribed into History. To succeed in such an attempt, the method consists first in elaborating a fiction from a lived reality, then in giving its writing a power of visualisation, and eventually in introducing into it an internal dialectic capable of causing in the reader the uprising of an ethical reflection. In fact, the truth of any testimony remains tributary of an identity that is built only at the occasion of a storytelling. Moreover, the text is written in the present and from mere memorial marks. Finally, even when History gives validation to its references, a dark part remains, which will always escape the articulated language. This questionning about what may give the concentration camp experience its strenght of impact then leads to suggest that, since the camp has been lived as an experimentation of defiguration, it is only by inscribing it into a poetic of incarnation, capable of restituting to the dead letter its explosive power, that the survivor will be able to reconquer a human face
Thesis, Grenoble, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012GRENL005.
Full textRousseau's reflections on the spectacle (whether theatrical, musical or pictorial) are elaborated through a number of theoretical texts that question the status of the spectator and his relationship with what is seen and heard. This relationship is a source of numerous questions for the writer who reflects on what could be termed an 'economy of distance' , so as to better adjust the way he looks on the object mis en scène and to regulate the emotions provoked by the structure of the spectacle. This approach to the spectacle also allows us to explore Rousseau's approach to origins as it seems that it is from his conception of nature that the notion of the spectacle and the emotions it provokes are developed. Emotional quality is particularly explored by Rousseau who distinguishes the visual spectacle from the auditory one: to the fascination of the image created by the theatrical setting is opposed the musical sentiment, seen both as a source of ideal communication between the musician and the listener, as well as the creator of a mental spectacle. Such is the importance of the musical spectacle that the writing of Rousseau is not conceived without a constant reference to its characteristics. The writer thus becomes a listener of music subjugated by the sentiments he feels. These reflections on spectacles find an echo in the narrative works of Rousseau that apply those characteristics identified by his theory. Influenced by the aesthetics of the theatrical tableau conceptualised by Diderot and reflecting on the bourgeois drama, Rousseau tempers his suspicion concerning different types of theatrical images that according to him find their best expression in the way of looking. The Nouvelle Héloïse goes at times beyond the linearity of writing to propose certain tableaux that borrow from the estampe and the bourgeois drama. The reader is thus transformed into a spectator of a bourgeois drama, but not exclusively so: indeed, the representation in images of the narrative draws equally on pictorial sources (with in particular the considerations on the Sujets d'estampes) and offers a reflection on the looks assumed by the majority of characters. But, above all, it is by seeking inspiration in his own musical concepts that Rousseau is led to finding new forms of writing that renew the relationship to the reader. Indeed, the autobiographical works propose a musical mise en scène of the self. The composer becomes therefore one of the writer's models because he enables the 'I' to be read as a musical partition. At the same time, the structure of the visual spectacle is re-questioned by Rousseau whose writing marries the musical model. In the last instance it is the copyist who, in the autobiographical works, offers a writing model that of the chamber obscure, where the spectacle of the self is transformed into musical signs
Akieudji, Colbert. "La représentation de l'Afrique dans l'écriture littéraire italienne de la seconde moitié du XXème siècle." Thesis, Paris 3, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009PA030158.
Full textIn Italian writers’ texts of the second half of 20th Century, many African elements are particularly brought to light. This set of physical, human, spatial and socio-cultural constituents is textualized through a vast number of techniques which show on one hand a particular rhetoric of elsewhere expression and on the other hand that a literary discourse on Africa becomes a real opportunity to re-read and re-interpret the writers’ books. Images that are reflected in these texts show an Italian imaginary on Africa mostly characterized by primitive, mysterious and fall-oriented symbols, hence the worry to modernize the image of Africa by the writers. Therefore, Italy is finally seen through African continent. If one supposes the functionality of this discourse, one can say that the authors equally use it to dwell on the colonial past of their country, to express the tragedy of postcolonial Africa and to denounce some ills that damage the contemporary society. One has to do with an autobiographical writing that favors the construction of the authors’ individual identity as well as the collective identity of Italy, without leaving out the development of literature and cinema. On one side, a diachronic study shows that this phenomenon has considerably evolved during the Italian 20th Century, and this happens at various levels, from the epi-text to the intra-textual treatment of African space, the “pure” look of the contemporary epoch opposing itself to colonial visions of the fascist period. On the other side, a synchrony including French texts urges to set an hypothesis of a European vision of the African continent, although a look peculiar to Italy remains, concerning the singularity of the African milieu. Finally, one notices that hetero-images of Italian writers coincide with auto-images of African writers and that the interest to the other is reciprocal between the two spaces

Full textThis research aims to study the correlation between identity and writing in Supervielle's works. We will explain how, the poet feeling divided between America and Europe, death and life, mind and body; he attempts to integrate them in acts of writing. An analysis of his novels, at the thematic and linguistic levels, allows us to identify his reflection on identity, personal and social identity, and the language used to express it. This analysis reveals Supervielle's exploration of how to present characters that greatly reflect his own life. The study of Supervielle's poetry, thematically and linguistically, strengthens our hypothesis of an identity crisis. Such a crisis manifests itself through various changes of position in enunciation, and therefore a lyric subject that proves to be both anonymous and incarnate. The particular identity and characteristics of writing become clearer in the narrative through the use of one or another subject. Finally, it appears to us that Supervielle establishes and maintains his identity according to the figure of the narrator and the lyrical subject. Exploring narrative structures common to both kinds could provide Supervielle with his profound identity: a French poet

Full textIrony is back. Today, we are witnessing a burst of literary and artistic productions which are characterized by "thoughtful lightness". The irony is often described as postmodern irony because of his bonds with the entire cultural symptom of the postmodern society. With the rise of writers of a new generation of Editions de Minuit among whom Jean Echenoz, Eric Chevillard and Jean-Philippe Toussaint are predecessors, the postmodern irony has asserted itself in French literary creation to which added Milan Kundera who is a writer of another generation and of another culture. Irony of these writers is not only used as a way to distance from the writing, but also a vision of the world that we would call it the "cheerful disenchantment". We explore the relationship of irony and question of existence in our research. First of all, irony is a cleaved conscience. Such conscience state has come true in a mode of speech as exteriorization of the cleaved conscience and a way of obtaining an overview. In this research, we would like to go into detail the following questions: where shall we be situated is the long process of separation? What have the subject, his action and his way of being become? Which is the mode of speech that is derived of the conscience of this contemporary subject? We try to answer these questions with our reflections brought to the irony phenomenon in the contemporary literary representation

Full textIn our thesis we suggest a journey inside the works of Pascal Quignard. We bring to the fore the difficulties, for an academic critic, to build a reading that is not a simple paraphrase of what Quignard writes. The writer actually comments what he writes and give himself angles to everything he publishes. Our reading of Quignard is not an erudite approch of his works, it is willing to show some effects produced by the texts. In the first part, we take an interest in the articulation between writing and suffering. To write is presented as a survival gesture that allows a metamorphosis of the writer’s life. We show how moments lived by the author are constantly take up again in his texts and how they structure the construction of the works. In the second part, we try to grasp the cosmogony that Quignard creates, he describes the laws of life that conditions our relationship to life and sexuality. Sexual difference is presented as an absolute that cuts humanity in two. Men and women are fundamentally different according to Quignard, he devotes many pages to explain the nature of this difference. Finally, we try to understand the status of love in the works of Quignard, love appears to be a fusion that allows individuals to exceed their own limits. Love is a way to feel again antenatal sensations; the mother, loved and hated, is a key figure in the works of Pascal Quignard

Full textThis dissertation analyses the different meanings of prostitution in the writings of Marguerite Duras. Through the intersecting analytical lenses of literary history, philosophy and psychoanalysis, our research shows that prostitution, far from being a simple subject, is inherent to the creative art and act of the author. Writing, for Duras, is the product of a creative tension shaped by distance : the very margin (away from the doxa, the language itself) from which the author crafted her work is the creative force that informs her desire to diverge from the norm and effectively strive to overturn rather than follow it.We will first consider the thematic of prostitution – prevalent from her earliest texts – throughout Duras’s work and how it weaves a veritable fantasy matrix proposing a body of work that reverses the common axiology by sacralizing profanity and placing the margin at the center. Prostitution becomes a melting pot of the writing process and reveals the agenda of the potentialities within creation (it shapes writing itself). Nevertheless, beyond the idealization of giving oneself to another, prostitution runs deeper than the skin : it has ametaphysical sense. Indeed, we demonstrate how offering one’s body is linked to an infinite quest or thirst that only the Absolute of life can quench. Offering one’s body is a tense act situated between desire and mourning and that can be interpreted as the quest for Aletheia(truth through unveiling), rather than a simple transaction free of any eroticism. In any case,to prostitute oneself is above all, a staged performance deeply rooted in theatricality, and this point is analyzed in the last part of our work. After the 1980s the rapport between the prostitute and the truth changes and distance, far more than the rapprochement between bodies and beings, is then paid in cash

Full textJean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio is one of the greatest living writers who write in French. Regard is a persistent theme in his work. Regard signifies not only the senses and consciousness, two faculties that could perceive the inner world and the outside world, but also a divine force or a supernatural gift to exceed the human faculties for the real knowledge. It leads to material ecstasy and total communion with the absolute. Regard is considered as the horizon between the inside and the outside, between immanence and transcendence. It holds the key to writing based on poetic ecstasy. Because of its middle position and uncertain nature, Regard is an essential presence in the writer’s journey to the “other side” of the world. We will study especially the relation of Regard and his writing of material ecstasy

Full textIn the work of Jean Genet (1910-1986), the question of writing – which is that of literariness - is indissociable from political and ethical reflection. One of the most remarkable aspects of Genet’s writing is the way in contends with the imbrication between these two kinds of reflection. This double dimension is addressed here from the vantage point of History as inscribed in Genet’s oeuvre, and through an interrogation into the rapport between the literary on the one hand and the political and ethical on the other. The first interrogation concerns the relation of Genet’s writing to memory and History, and the articulations and disarticulations this entails. These questions are inseparable from a critique of the distinction between the public and the private or intimate, which traverses the whole of Genet’s work. For Genet, writing must be the « work of life », yet how can it without restraining itself to conventions that regu! late each act in classifying it within one of its domains? Indeed, the central question that is raised here is that of the Event. For Genet, it is not enough to commemorate the past. He searches for a writing that conserves the trace of suffering, whilst producing an effect, and thus constituting itself in the Event. His reflection on what might be called the “politics of memory” compels us to examine the notions of trace, materiality, and performativity as they regard the precarity of the living

Full textThis dissertation deals with the literary production of three second-generation Chinese American women writers: Amy Tan, Gish Jen et Fae Myenne Ng. It focuses on some of their novels in which food plays a central part: The Joy Luck Club (1989), The Kitchen God’s Wife (1991) and The Hundred Secret Senses (1996) by Tan; Typical American (1991) and Mona in the Promised Land: A Novel (1996) by Jen; and Bone (1993) and Steer Toward Rock (2008) by Ng. It aims to show that food and all other elements related to it are linked to multiple processes of ethnic, gender and literary identity destabilization and reformulation. It highlights both common and diverging features between the different ways in which the authors write about food, which is itself a paramount element in identity construction. The mouth is the liminal area through which the incorporation or rejection of external food and imperatives are carried out. Ingestion and digestion, or spitting out and vomiting enable subjects to shape or delimit physiological, social, cultural and psychological bodies simultaneously, both on a collective and on an individual level. This dissertation thus explores the specific contexts related to food in the diverse Chinese American communities represented in the novels. It then analyzes how culinary scenes are useful topoi for the writers to underline several intercultural, gender, and scriptural issues, and thereby to redefine the expectations and the terms that underlie their representation

Full textIdentity constitutes one of the fundamental themes of African literature. It takes on a resonance in the writing of Senghor and Ken Bugul as well as in the writing of many Senegalese writing. It allows the establishment of an epistemological footbridge with the body. Therefore, the discourses about the body help to understand what is at stake concerning identity which livens up the dramatic tension of the narrative structures. For example, in the work of Cheikh Hamidou Kane, the body becomes the motive for a metaphysical apprehension of the "esse". In Ken Bugul’s autobiographies, the affirmation of identity of the feminine "Me" refers to the existential condition, especially when the literatures show the conflicts of gender. However, we agree that the debate on identity and the body has its importance in the understanding in the psychology of the character. It also has its importance in the construction of meaning, through which society reveals its vices and virtues. Moreover, that is why in the works of Sembene, Abasse Ndione, Sanou Lô, Marouba Fall, Seydi Sow or still El Hadji Momar Sambe, the social implication of literary discourse fragments of meaning to which all writing about the body refers. The ambition of this thesis is to construct a comparative exchange between their richness of meaning

Full text« Vigorous and fruitful spirit » (Roy, 1891: forward), Charles Sorel is a prolific author known mainly to be the author of the Histoire comique de Francion, work first published in 1623. This book will have two further editions revised in 1626 and 1633. Through this work presented as the most read novel in the 17th century after Madame de Lafayette’s Princess of Clèves, Charles Sorel signs the birth of comic history, a genre marked mainly by concern for reasonableness. Sorel is also known as a philosopher, historian and literary critic. The immense work of this polygraph, which has devoted his whole life to writing, is marked by a concern for a thorough analysis of the literary practices of his time, through both his fictional works, philosophical, historical as theoretical or critical.Through his work, Charles Sorel engages in an in-depth exploration of the forms of writing of his time and wonders about the method of reading by the public. In fact, his work presents itself as an examination and an attempt to redefine literary practices. In his literary production, he was interested in all forms of the novel of his time: the picaresque novel, the heroic novel, the pastoral novel, the satirical novel, the libertine novel… This mixture of different Romanesque traditions and forms makes analysis possible, which makes it possible to see all that the novel has of illusory, dangerous and even “boring”. As the young novelist states in his anti-novel, it is a question of wiping out “old authorities” and “old mistakes”. The novel becomes a field of experimentation of the novel itself: Sorel questions it, questions it. Through his historical and philosophical work, he also submits to examination the practices related to reading and writing. The author of Francion proclaims throughout his work his aspiration to renew the ways of writing and the reading habits of his time. This desire to renew literary practices is driven by the need to disseminate knowledge in simple and concise language and to enable the reader to learn more effectively

Full textThe writer Erri De Luca acts as a storyteller of personal, intimate and collective stories. It leads us to study the origins and the foundations of his writing. It makes us think about the way his poetic and sensitive writing makes a transmission of History possible. Yet, it inevitably questions memory and the way this memory is reproduced: interpretation, absence, forgetfulness and retrospective reinvention. It also reveals the possibility of story telling to offer today’s reader the capacity to appropriate this History he may not have lived through. A the heart of this singular work indeed, there is a strength of speech which enables the attentive reader to understand a sensitive sentence in which the power of the image is fully expressed. The reader can seize this sentence and memorize it before transmitting it again after remodelling it. Thus the importance of this storytelling particularity in Erri De Luca’s writing. From then on De Luca’s narrative style full of lyrical sensation, reveals a powerful mastery of telling

Full textMarguerite Duras (1914-1996) and Eileen Chang (1920-1995), two women writers of the 20th century show specific sources for their inspiration : Duras – was from Indochina, and Chang – was from Shanghai; childhood and family experiences offer the background of most of their works. The worlds they describe are consequently defined by pain and suffering – either individual or collective. The family theme prevails in the works of both writers. It allows to offer a psychoanalytic reading of many of their novels of each writer, and to comment them by reference to the family romance which characterizes Duras and Chang. But childhood, family secrets, importance of the mother image, etc., are not the only background of Duras and Chang’s works. Both writers were fully aware of the political and social conditions which prevailed, and of the women’s situation. Consequently, the psychoanalytic reading of both writers should not neglect these conditions and the lucidity of both writers. This reading should account for the connection between the family history of both writers and their ability to address broader issues
Erlingsdottir, Irma. "Scènes d'altérités. Poétique et politique de la mémoire et de la résistance dans trois pièces d'Hélène Cixous." Thesis, Paris 3, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012PA030024.
Full textThe thesis explores the role of history, memory, responsibility, and politics in three plays by Hélène Cixous: The History (We Will Never Know) (1994), The Terrible but Unfinished Story of Norodom Sihanouk, King of Cambodia (1985) and the Perjured City or the Awakening of the Erinyes (1994). The purpose is to put the plays in their philosophical and political contexts and to engage the questions they raise from literary, archival, and theoretical perspectives. The broader political and ideological dimensions of Cixous’s aesthetic and literary writing are also central to the analysis. The thesis specifically examines the historical and contemporary issues addressed in the plays, such as the crisis of the political order and democracy; colonial and imperial practices; the linkages between geopolitics, civil wars and genocides; and the various forms of individual and collective resistance to power. In addition, it analyzes the discourses and subject positions staked out by the participants in the narratives the plays describe. The thesis is divided into two parts: The first one, entitled "The Scene of the Book", opens with a methodological and theoretical chapter followed by an analysis of The History (We Will Never Know), with emphasis on the mise en abyme of the process of writing and the relationship between the poet and history. In the second part, "The Scene of History", the focus is on contemporary history and politics, using The Terrible but Unfinished Story of Norodom Sihanouk and the Perjured City as case studies, addressing issues of power, violence, territoriality, democracy and justice. The thesis stresses the dual obligation, underpinning the theatrical writings of Hélène Cixous: the responsibility toward memory and the duty to resist unjust power in all its forms
Pradelle, Laure-Emmanuelle. "Le théâtre de Georges Lavaudant : les territoires de l’imaginaire." Thesis, Paris 10, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018PA100079.
Full textGeorges Lavaudant is a director who occupies an important place in the history of French theater. He has created more than a hundred shows for theater and opera in France and abroad. He started directing theaters at the age of 28. He is also an author. Self-taught, he surrounded himself with a family of professionals - actors, a set designer, a composer, a choreographer - who accompanied him for forty years, from his debut as an amateur to the most prestigious stages. He has staged classic plays, living contemporary playwrights, and his own plays. His work is dense and diverse. From the beginning he was positioned as non-Brechtian, preferring the exploration of the stage to dramaturgical analysis a priori, and non-dramatic forms to the didactic fable. He considers staging as an act of writing. Lavaudant, who is passionate about literature and writers, uses the tools of the theater to invent an imaginary world that he combines with the work represented. This thesis investigates how this director’s creative process leads to this hybrid theater which transfigures reality
Thesis, Rennes 2, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012REN20034/document.
Full textLa Galatea and Persiles, two romances written by Cervantes, are frequently misunderstood because they do not establish the same relation with reality as in Don Quixote. They explore an imaginary space and seem to work in contradiction with the rule of verisimilitude and what we consider to be the foundation of the modern novel. After this assessment, the present study has been elaborated in order to understand the reasons for these special features in Cervantes's first and last books, a writer whose “ingenio” has often been praised. That is why, for a start, I will focus on the similarities between them and, first and foremost, I will contextualise them: the imagination and the imaginary will be the guiding principles. This work tries to show how these books are able to meet the readership's and the theoreticians' expectations. At the same time they explore an imaginary space, proving that it is possible to invent a free writing

Full textIn our globalized contemporaneity, the speed of flows, exchanges and cultural transfers have increased. In this characteristic context of our modernity, there are figures dominating the landscape: the figures of travel and movement. They are incarnated in many identities and representations and meet some form of flexibility or emergency where the question of the frontier has taken a significant place. In this context, the question of the deterritorialisation of bodies, identities and imaginaries has become an important issue that alters and transforms the notions of constancy and stability in creation and scenic languages. Artistic and cultural transfers can consequently be perceived as the result of moving whose random nature would test the creation and its processes. In this way, the stage work should be considered as a place of convergence in which many visions of the world and the human are to be found. Then it would become essential to grasp the question of physical and symbolic move in a relational dynamic in which the narrowing of spaces and time would have meaning only in a consciousness of our belonging to the Tout-Monde, conceptualized by Édouard Glissant. To reflect on the forms and mutations of the representations and writings, inscribed in the "Mondialité", it would be to participate in the making sense of the complexification of the modalities and processes of scenic creation, by positing as a condition to these processes a thought of move and translation. This aesthetic and ethical thought would open the way to safeguarding the diversity of imaginaries necessary for all creation
