Abstract:

Ogg Vorbis is a rather new audio format with some similarities with other more known formats such as MP3 and WMA. It is generally accepted to have a better audio quality than most competing formats and it is in contrast to many of its competitors totally licence and royalty free.

The goal with this thesis is to port the existing fixed point decoder Tremor, which is written in C, to Motorola's DSP56002. The DSP has a very limited amount of memory so some optimizations has to be made to be able to run Tremor successfully.

The report presents the necessary steps taken to port Tremor to the DSP and the difficulties of this process. It also describes the memory and CPU usage of the DSP when running Tremor and other results of the port.

A description as well as examples and workarounds of bugs found in the compiler g56k is attached to this report.

Abstract:

This thesis is a part of an effort to make a scalable behavioral model of the Central Processing Unit and instruction set compatible with the DSP56000 Processor. The goal of this design is to reduce the critical path, silicon area, as well as power consumption of the instruction decoder.

The instruction decoder consists of three different types of operations instruction fetching, decoding and execution. By using these three steps an efficient model has to be designed to get the shortest critical path, less silicon area, and low power consumption.

Brisebois, Terrence. "Wideband RF Front End Daughterboard Based on the Motorola RFIC." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/33943.

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of software-defined radio (SDR) is to move the processing of radio signals from the analog domain to the digital domain â to use digital microchips instead of analog circuit components. Until faster, higher-precision analog-to-digital (ADCs) and digital-to-analog converters (DACs) become affordable, however, some analog signal processing will be necessary. We still need to convert high-radio frequency (RF) signals that we receive to low intermediate-frequency (IF) or baseband (centered on zero Hz) signals in order for ADCs to sample them and feed them into microchips for processing. The reverse is true when we transmit. Amplification is also needed on the receive side to fully utilize the dynamic range of the ADC and power amplification is needed on the transmit side to increase the power output from the DAC for transmission. Analog filtering is also needed to avoid saturating the ADC or to filter out interference when receiving and to avoid transmitting spurs. The analog frequency conversion, amplification and filtering section of a radio is called the RF front end. This thesis describes work on a new RF front end daughterboard for the Universal Software Radio Peripheral, or USRP. The USRP is a software-radio hardware platform designed to be used with the GNU Radio software radio software package. Using the Motorola RFIC4 chip, the new daughterboard receives RF signals, converts them to baseband and does analog filtering and amplification before feeding the signal into the USRP for processing. The chip also takes transmit signals from the USRP, converts them from baseband to RF and amplifies and filters them. The board was designed and laid out by Randall Nealy. I wrote the software driver for GNU Radio. The driver defines the interface between the USRP and the RFIC chip, controls the physical settings, and calculates and sets the hundreds of variables necessary to operate this extremely complex chip correctly. It allows plug-and-play compatibility with the current USRP daughterboards and supplies additional functions not available in any other daughterboard.

Abstract:
Recently, various special purpose processors have been developed and are frequently being used for different specialized tasks. Prominent among these are the communication processors, which are generally used within an embedded system environment. Such processors can run relatively advanced and general purpose operating systems such as uCLinux, which is a freely available embedded Linux distribution. In this work, a prototype SoHo (Small office / Home office) router is designed and implemented using Motorola MCF5272 as the core communication processor and uCLinux as the operating system. The implementation relies purely on the existing hardware resources of an available development board and the publicly available open source utilities of uCLinux. The overall development process provides an embedded system implementation and configuration example.

Mattam, Swaroop. "A Synthesizable VHDL Model of the Serial Communication Interface and Synchronous Serial Interface of Motorola DSP56002." Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Electrical Engineering, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-7411.

Full text
Abstract:

The design and implementation of a synthesizable model of the Serial Communication Interface and Synchronous Serial Interface, which constitutes the Port C of Motorola DSP56002 is presented in this report. They serves as a full duplex serial interface to other DSPs, processors, codecs, digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital converters and other transducers. The SCI block is able to handle a data rate of 5Mbps in Synchronous mode and 625Kbps in asynchronous mode for a 40MHz clock. It supports five word formats including a multidrop mode for multiprocessor systems. SSI provides a data rate of 10Mbps for the same 40 MHz clock. The design includes a programmable on-chip or external baud rate generator/interrupt timer for the SCI and a clock generator and frame Sync generator for the SSI.

The thesis focus on arriving at a full functional description of individual blocks included with Port C from the data sheets and product users manual. From this operational description a behavioural model was developed. The structure and implementation is based on the Motorola DSP56002 with additional support for a variable data-width. The model is written completely in behavioural VHDL with a top-down approach and the model was verified and validated.

This study will collaborate by bringing some detailed analysis and findings on a special case study of a discontinuous product development process, trying to answer how the discontinuous product development process takes place and the main factors that influence this process. Additionally, it tried to explore some explanations for the difficulties generally faced by the companies to sustain innovation. The case is about the Motorola cell phone RAZR V3, launched in 2004. RAZR V3 was noted by industry experts as game-changing feat of design and engineering, selling more than 110 million units by end of 2008 and recognized as one of the fastest selling products in the industry. The study uses a single case methodology, which is appropriate given the access to a phenomenon that happened inside corporate dominium and it is not easily accessed for academic studies, besides being a rare case of success in the cellular phone industry. In order to magnify the understanding of the phenomenon, the exploration was extended to contrast the RAZR development process and the standard product development process in Motorola. Additionally, it was integrated a longitudinal reflection of the company product development evolution until the next breakthrough product hitting the cellular phone industry. The result of the analysis shows that discontinuous products do not fit well traditional product development process (in this case, stage-gate). This result reinforces the results obtained on previous studies of discontinuous product development conducted by other authors. Therefore, it is clear that the dynamics of discontinuous product development are different from the continuous product development, requiring different treatment to succeed. Moreover, this study highlighted the importance of the management influence in all the phases of the process as one of the most important factors, suggesting a key component to be carefully observed in future researches. Some other findings of the study that were considered very important for a discontinuous product development process: have champions (who believe and protect the project) and not only one champion; create a right atmosphere to make flow the creative process; question paradigms to create discontinuous products; simple guiding light to focus the team; company culture that accepts and knows how to deal with risks; and undoubtedly, have a company strategy that understands the different dynamics of continuous and discontinuous product development processes and treat them accordingly.

Gustafsson, Kristofer, and Johan Jacobsson. "Quality assurance with TL 9000 in agile software development of set-top boxes : The case of Motorola and the use of Scrum." Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Computer and Information Science, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-17446.

Abstract:

In today’s fast-paced world, there is a constant demand for better and more efficient ways of doing business. Motorola in Linköping are using the agile development framework, Scrum in their software development. A certain level of quality must also be assured of the delivered goods and services. Is it possible to use Scrum and still meet the quality requirements?

This Master Thesis is performed to investigate if it is possible to achieve a quality certificate from TL 9000, the telecom industry extension of ISO 9000, when using the agile development framework Scrum. The investigation consists of interviews and observations at Motorola, Linköping, along with literature studies about quality systems and agile development.

The conclusion is that it is possible to meet the TL 9000 requirements when using Scrum, under the condition that some additional processes are performed and that other parts of the organization also fulfills the remaining requirements. This is needed since there are requirements that are out of scope for the Scrum framework. Examples of the suggested additions are to follow the Scrum framework more strictly and to adopt a more specific definition of done.

Barrish, Jan. "Green Digital Marketing in the Mobile Phone Industry : Recommendations for Sony Ericsson's GreenHeart™." Thesis, Högskolan i Gävle, Avdelningen för ekonomi, 2011. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hig:diva-11692.

Full text
Abstract:
Aim: This study is part of a digital activation plan that was done for Sony Ericsson’s GreenHeart™ team in the fall of 2009. The investigation presents and discusses what Sony Ericsson and its 4 main competitors (Nokia, LG, Samsung and Motorola) have done within green digital marketing and how the subject was communicated on their webpages. The aim of this study is to: • To present and analyze consumer insights on ecologically-driven technology • To present and analyze the eco-marketing digital practices and strategies used by 4 competitive mobile phone brands • To propose a digital green marketing strategy for GreenHeart™ Method: This study consists of interviews with Sony Ericsson personnel, literature and web analysis that focus on the green initiatives of mobile phone manufacturers in the digital channel. Result & Conclusions: A main issue with green products is that consumers tend to find them not as good as non-green products. Consumer insight studies suggest that that the best way to communicate and promote green products is to focus on their direct benefits to consumers in comparison to non-green products, and communicate the green benefits only as a secondary message. This was also supported by theories such as Levit’s concept of “marketing myopia”, which describes a marketer’s tendency to focus on product features rather than consumer benefits. When analyzing the webpages of Sony Ericsson’s top 4 competitors, it was 3 evident that all 4 mobile phone manufacturers employed green digital marketing in quite a homogenous way. One striking similarity was that all brands have separated their green initiatives from the core of the website. It is a possibility that marketers have done this intentionally since consumers tend to associate green with lesser quality. In order for Sony Ericsson GreenHeart™ to stand out from the competitors, it was therefore suggested that green information should be integrated into the website and to communicate GreenHeart™ as a value-added product feature rather than a product in itself. Suggestions for future research: It is recommended to continue this research and to compare the findings from the mobile phone industry with other industries, such as the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), where Green and Organic branding at a glance seem to have been developed strongly. It would be interesting to gain a perspective on the similarities and differences in the green marketing practices of different industries, but also to gain knowledge and inspiration on how green consumer electronics could be marketed in a more effective and integrated fashion. In this perspective, analyzing any variations between on- and off-line marketing initiatives would be interesting to see if the green message changes in a typical marketing mix. Moreover, it would be good to counter analyze the psychological mechanisms why, for certain industries such as food, green products are regarded as high quality whilst in another industry like electronics, green products are regarded as having lesser quality and business value. Contribution of the thesis: The most important finding of this study is that all the analyzed mobile phone manufacturers have many green initiatives. However, they are communicated separately from all other marketing and communication initiatives in the main digital channel. They tend to be set aside that consumers need to search for them, thus the messages are not delivered seamlessly. This makes it appear that green initiatives are being regarded as something obligatory rather than something that has true business value. Using Theoretical arguments on communication strategy from Levit and ClearWorks show how this, in reality, can be changed and be integrated with product marketing where it can generate a more significant business value

The graduation thesis "Trends in mobile phones development" is focusing principally on detailed analysis of mobile phone market on a global scale. The aim of this thesis is to elaborate comprehensive analysis of mobile phone market oriented on phones with operating systems (smartphones). The analysis is drawn primarily from the perspective of the key players in the market and comparison of these manufactures. After the descriptive part, where is introduced market as a whole, market segmentation by volume and value, this section focuses on segmentation of the global market by key players. This descriptive part is completed by market segmentation according to the amount of mobile phones sold by key players. Second analysis is segmented by operating system. Following parts of the thesis is more practical. This part of the thesis is analyzing the companies, which are selling smartphones. In this part I started by describing a brief overview about what the market is, what is focusing on and what their advantages and pitfalls are. My focus is analyzing the market via Porter's analysis and SWOT analysis of individual manufactures. Finally, I analyze the financial indicators from year 2007 to present. In conclusion I come to recommendations what manufactures should and should not to do. Chapter with warnings is described by the products on the market, which failed in recent years. At very end I come to the evaluation and recommendations, which theoretically should bring some positive progress to companies. The main contribution of this thesis is to provide comprehensive, detailed analysis of the market of mobile phones and smartphones manufactures on a global scale. One of the benefits is the collection of information, data and analysis describing the current state of the market, but also recommendations practices, to which I reached via progression of the this work. Thanks to unique appreciation of the global mobile phone market, their indicators and strategic information, it is necessary to say that this thesis can be very valuable material for some readers, who want to get overview, or seek accurate information about certain manufacture.

Abstract:
This report discusses in great detail the various research, design, and development stages of the Produce Sorting Microcomputer developed for HAGAN ENGINEERING Inc. The two-semester Clinical Research project has been approved by the graduate committee at the School of Engineering at the University of the Pacific and fulfills the requirements towards a Master Degree in Electrical Engineering. The project was selected based on its complexity, feasibility, the time span it required to complete, and its relevance to the area of real time microcomputer design. In addition, the design constraints and specifications were to be dictated solely by HAGAN ENGINEERING Inc. and all further modifications were to be discussed and approved by HAGAN. These limitations created a professional industry-like atmosphere, which is one of the goals of the Clinical Research Program. A brief User's Manual will accompany the MC68000 board; it will contain all the vital information about the system that a programmer or a technician might need to understand the system. The manual wall contain the complete circuit schematic, a parts list, general design features, and all the software properties of the system (memory map, interrupt tables register map).

Abstract:

The Ericsson R380 is a so-called smartphone, combining an advanced mobile phone with a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). To evaluate the usability of the Ericsson R380 and benchmark it against the Nokia 9110 Communicator and the Motorola A6188 Accompli, a repeated measurements experiment was performed. 18 subjects (10 men and 8 women) with no previous experience of any of the interfaces participated. Half of the subjects had extensive experience from using Ericsson mobile phones and half of the subjects had extensive experience from using Nokia mobile phones. A set of 9 tasks to be solved on each interface was presented to the subjects. The order in which the subjects used the interfaces was balanced with a Latin square design while the tasks were presented in consecutive order and were identical for all interfaces. Level of completeness, completion time and number of actions were assessed for each task and interface. Subjects also rated the perceived usability and aesthetics of the interfaces. Overall, subjects were most successful using the Motorola A6188 Accompli, using fewer keystrokes and less time as well as needing fewer hints compared to the Ericsson R380 and Nokia 9110 Communicator. However, the Ericsson R380 was rated significantly higher than the other interfaces on perceived usability. Previous experience with Ericsson or Nokia mobile phones did not have a major impact on how well subjects succeeded with using the interfaces in the test. Certain mistakes made by each group of subjects could be explained in terms of mental models, Einstellung effects and the use of so- called Function-Object interaction style where Object-Function interaction was appropriate. Contrary to earlier findings, aesthetics and perceived usability did not correspond to a great extent. Finally, the results are discussed and some suggestions for improvements are put forward.

Abstract:
Background: Literature recommends the implementation of multisensory and motor stimulation according to the philosophy of person-centered care to improve motor interaction of people with dementia. However, very little is known of the impact of this intervention when carried out by people without specialized training. Aims: To assess the impact of multisensory and motor stimulation on the motor interaction of people with moderate to severe dementia. Methods: In this quasi-experimental pre- and posttest study, people with dementia and care staff of two residential care homes were recruited. The data collection consisted in demographic data of all participants and clinical data of the people with dementia. Six video recordings during morning care were also collected, before and after the implementation of an educational program. This program was designed using a multisensory and motor-based approach, in eight weekly 90-minutes sessions, where care staff acquired skills to perform multisensory and motor stimulation adapted to the characteristics of people with dementia. Video recordings were rated using a list of behaviors, an ethogram. Frequency and duration of each behavior was rated by two observers using the specialized software Noldus The Observer XT, version 10. The study of inter-observer reliability was performed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) equation (2,1) and the Bland and Altman method. A descriptive and inferential analysis was performed by IBM SPSS Statistics software (version 20). Occurring differences between the two evaluation moments were explored through the Signal Test. Results: 18 persons with moderate to severe dementia and 36 care staff members were included. The mean of the residents’ age was 86,1 (±6,98) years old and the majority were female (n=14). The caregivers’ mean age was 46 (±9,2) years old and all female. In all, there were collected 108 video recordings. The CCI equation (2.1), showed a moderate to excellent reliability ranging from 0.47 to 0.93. There was also no systematic bias between the two observers. Results showed a positive improvement in the resident’s engagement. The duration of engagement increased from 104.54 (± 61.62) to 112.46 (± 72.82) and the duration of voluntary involvement increased from 29.33 (± 63.74) to 32.04 (± 62.35). The frequency of aggressiveness decreased, being that of 0.07 (± 0.11) before the program and inexistent after the program. However the results were not statistically significant. Conclusion: The results are reliable and suggest that well-structured stimulation programs, implemented by staff care, can be applied during morning care and show positive effects on the motor interaction of people with dementia. However, investigations with more robust methodologies and extended samples are urgently needed to contribute to the scientific evidence in this area.

Abstract:
The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of a motor intervention with Mastery Motivational Climate and physical education classes in motor skills, physical activity levels, nutritional status, and perceived motor competence. To better meet the objectives, the dissertation was divided into two articles: one analyzing the impact of intervention and school physical education classes in motor skills, physical activity levels, body mass index and perceived motor competence. The second article examined the impact of interventions in these same variables, but gathering the children's motor intervention and physical education according to risk factors (motor present difficulties and being overweight). Participated in the first study 45 children aged 5 to 7 years divided into two groups: 11 boys and 10 girls in the motor intervention group and 12 boys and 12 girls in school physical education group. The second study participated 43 children aged 5 to 7 years divided into two groups: 11 boys and 9 girls in motor intervention group and 12 boys and 11 girls in school physical education group. To analyze categorize the motor performance we used the Movement Asssessment Battery for Children - Second Edition (MABC-2) and the Test of Gross Motor Development - Second Edition (TGMD-2) was used to analyze the motor skills of children; the analysis of the nutritional status was given by calculating the body mass index categorized as the curves of the Center Disease Control. Physical activity levels were measured in at least three classes before starting classes also in the final three lessons. To analyze the perceived motor competence was used the driving range Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance for Young Children. The methodology of interventional program was the Motivational Climate Mastery implemented through strategies TARGET structure. For data analysis we used descriptive statistics, General Linear Model with repeated measures on the time factor to analyze the influence of intervening variables in the program. One Way ANOVA and paired t test were used as continuity tests to analyze the changes of time pre to post-intervention and to compare groups. The results show that: Article 1: only the motor intervention positively influenced the large motor skills, specifically locomotion skills and control objects, and the physical activity levels of children. Article 2: a) only the children of the motor intervention group, regardless of the sub-groups to which they belonged (overweight with physical, healthy difficulties with mobility or health problems typically developing), showed improvements in the large motor skills (mobility and control skills Objects); b) the levels of physical activity and participation in motor intervention group explained 9% and 57%, respectively, of the wide variation in motor skills of children. We conclude that the intervention program was effective to include children with different characteristics and improve engine performance and physical activity levels of children with and without motor difficulties and children with healthy weight and overweight. The results infer the need for structured physical activities and mediation of physical education teachers to improve engine performance and increase the physical activity levels of children.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to verify the mutual relationship between perceived competence and motor learning. For this purpose, 60 individuals between 18 and 35 years of age, of both sexes, inexperienced in the forehand open space skill of the tennis were divided into three groups according to the questionnaire PSPP of perceived competence: (1) high perception, (2) average perception and (3) low perception. Still, each group was subdivided by considering the possibility to control or not a particular variable that affects motor learning, the goal setting. Thus, they were divided into choice group (target of self-establishment) and yoked group (target set by the instructor). The task consisted in the forehand of the tennis field in order to hit a target positioned round the opponent\'s court. There were three blocks of 20 trials over three days of acquisition and a transfer test by changing the speed of the ball. This test was applied 10 minutes after the last block of trials of the acquisition phase. The participants answered the PSPP every day before the practice, and on the last day before and after practice. Results showed that the perception of competence influenced the motor learning so that individuals with high level of perceived competence learned better than those individuals with low levels of perceived competence. And, the inverse did not occur, i.e., motor learning did not affect the perception of competence. Furthermore, it was found that the yoked groups had better performances and higher levels of perceptions when compared to choice groups
