Full textThis master’s degree project includes the construction, implementation and the theory of function of the traction control system NTRAC, a traction control system designed to increase performance. A closer functionality study of the more common safety-designed traction control systems has been executed. As a result of this study different techniques in decreasing engine torque has been concluded. NTRAC uses a fuel-cutting method to decrease the torque. The risks and consequences by this, as well as different solutions, are in detail discussed in the report.
One of the main design purposes with NTRAC was to be able to adapt it easily to different vehicles. To evaluate this ability NTRAC has been implemented into two test vehicles, most different to each other by means of physical measurements. As an outcome of this evaluation, a number of mathematical models have been derived and implemented in numerical MATLAB programs. Two models are explained in the report and are included in MATLABfiles as appendix three and four at the end of the report.
The first model describes the dependency between the action of decrease in torque and the relative remaining degree of efficiency and the report explains why this does not show a linear dependency. The friction between the tire and the road surface plays a crucial part in the theory behind traction control and the report describes in detail how traditional traction control systems are designed to make compromises, in wheel spin tolerances, and thus not uses the maximum amount of traction. To increase performance traction control systems continuously have to optimise this amount and also minimise its fluctuations. Wheels travel with different speeds when cornering, thus the traction control system has to compensate for this, and the second mathematical model in the report describes this in detail.
Finally an increase in performance is verified through the usage of NTRAC in the formula car KTHR2. During an international competition in the summer of 05, at Bounthingsthorp proving grounds, Leicestershire, England, under perfect weather conditions, a time-saving of nine percentage where registered at acceleration tests from 0 to 75 meters.

Full textAs data logging technologies advanced, a point was reached where amateur motorsport enthusiasts could now log their vehicle's data while competing in motorsport events. Many drivers take advantage of these new data logging technologies but lack options for analyzing the data during and after motorsport events beyond standard tables and two-dimensional graphs. This thesis investigated the use of GIS as a tool for analyzing data collected during a motorsport event through time geography approaches and three-dimensional geovisualization techniques. Data were collected from the vehicle to analyze the speed and handling of the car while heart rate data were collected from the driver to help understand the driver's emotional state while navigating the course. Analysis of the data showed that time geography visualizations in a three-dimensional environment could help drivers better understand the data that had been collected from their vehicles and themselves and use it to improve their future performances when driving in motorsport events.

Full textFormula One is known to be a dangerous and thrilling motor sport. Given the dangers, huge measures of safety issues needs to be analyzed, and when a solutiuon is found - applied to ensure that the drivers, vehicles and audience is protected from any worst case scenario. This report analyzes the main factors of safety used throughout the ages and studies the main components used in the competitions of today. Given the results, an attempt was made to better understand where remaining safety hazards lie, and also formulate a suggestion of improvement to the found areas. David Chlebek studied the safety mechanisms used between 1950 and 2019, mainly focusing on the vehicle itself and the safety gear used by the drivers, while Gaston Holmström analyzed the circuits, the safety barriers around them and how they have improved over the years. In conclusion, they found that while there have been great strides in the safety development there are still multiple areas of possible improvement. They identified where the most critical areas were and presented ideas on how to enhance the safety there.

Full textThe main motivation for the work presented here began with previously conducted experiments with a programming concept at the time named "Macro". These experiments led to the conviction that it would be possible to build a system of engine control from scratch, which could eliminate many of the current problems of engine management systems in a direct and intrinsic way. It was also hoped that it would minimize the full range of software and hardware needed to make a final and fully functional system. Initially, this paper proposes to make a comprehensive survey of the state of the art in the specific area of software and corresponding hardware of automotive tools and automotive ECUs. Problems arising from such software will be identified, and it will be clear that practically all of these problems stem directly or indirectly from the fact that we continue to make comprehensive use of extremely long and complex "tool chains". Similarly, in the hardware, it will be argued that the problems stem from the extreme complexity and inter-dependency inside processor architectures. The conclusions are presented through an extensive list of "pitfalls" which will be thoroughly enumerated, identified and characterized. Solutions will also be proposed for the various current issues and for the implementation of these same solutions. All this final work will be part of a "proof-of-concept" system called "ECU2010". The central element of this system is the before mentioned "Macro" concept, which is an graphical block representing one of many operations required in a automotive system having arithmetic, logic, filtering, integration, multiplexing functions among others. The end result of the proposed work is a single tool, fully integrated, enabling the development and management of the entire system in one simple visual interface. Part of the presented result relies on a hardware platform fully adapted to the software, as well as enabling high flexibility and scalability in addition to using exactly the same technology for ECU, data logger and peripherals alike. Current systems rely on a mostly evolutionary path, only allowing online calibration of parameters, but never the online alteration of their own automotive functionality algorithms. By contrast, the system developed and described in this thesis had the advantage of following a "clean-slate" approach, whereby everything could be rethought globally. In the end, out of all the system characteristics, "LIVE-Prototyping" is the most relevant feature, allowing the adjustment of automotive algorithms (eg. Injection, ignition, lambda control, etc.) 100% online, keeping the engine constantly working, without ever having to stop or reboot to make such changes. This consequently eliminates any "turnaround delay" typically present in current automotive systems, thereby enhancing the efficiency and handling of such systems.

Full textThe purpose of the study is to investigate how the Scandinavian countries and its special sports federations view child- and youth development in motocross, as well as how this can be understood. This has been carried out using a content analysis and the documents published by the federations on their website. The study shows that the federations uses different concepts to develop talented drivers. Similarities and differences are presented in each country's view of sport and that the construction of sport in each country has an impact on the child- and youth development. It is also presented that the efforts of the federations are relatively similar to the line on how the country wants sport to be conducted.

This qualitative study examined the psychological demands of Formula One Racing, and the psychological skills former Formula One drivers utilized to meet those demands. The participants were nine former drivers, from six different countries, who have competed in at least one Formula One World Drivers Championship grand prix. The qualitative data were gathered using a semi-structured interview framework, developed by the researcher, to explore the psychological skills established from other validated psychological skills questionnaires, such as the Test of Performance Strategies, (Thomas, Murphy, & Hardy, 1999). Eight of the interviews were done via Skype, and one interview was performed in person. The interviews were transcribed verbatim, and then sent to the participants to make any edits or corrections. Once the transcriptions were approved, the data were coded by the researcher using constant comparative methods as described in Charmaz (2006). Three phases of coding resulted in four themes and 14 sub-themes. The themes that emerged include: (1) Applied Sport Psychology in Formula One, (2) Psychological Skills, (3) Uncontrollable Aspects of Competition, (4) Career Components. Drivers used various psychological skills in a focused effort to aid their performance. Drivers discussed the important role psychology plays in their sport, and the psychological resources available to them during their career. Drivers discussed the danger element of their competition, and how they and their competitors managed the fear associated with racing. The drivers in this study competed in an era that was much more dangerous than the current era of Formula One racing (Barnes, 2013). The drivers' use of psychological skills, and perceptions of sport psychology, may guide consultants working with race car drivers and those working with other populations that have similar psychological and physical demands.
