Abstract:

This master’s degree project includes the construction, implementation and the theory of function of the traction control system NTRAC, a traction control system designed to increase performance. A closer functionality study of the more common safety-designed traction control systems has been executed. As a result of this study different techniques in decreasing engine torque has been concluded. NTRAC uses a fuel-cutting method to decrease the torque. The risks and consequences by this, as well as different solutions, are in detail discussed in the report.

One of the main design purposes with NTRAC was to be able to adapt it easily to different vehicles. To evaluate this ability NTRAC has been implemented into two test vehicles, most different to each other by means of physical measurements. As an outcome of this evaluation, a number of mathematical models have been derived and implemented in numerical MATLAB programs. Two models are explained in the report and are included in MATLABfiles as appendix three and four at the end of the report.

The first model describes the dependency between the action of decrease in torque and the relative remaining degree of efficiency and the report explains why this does not show a linear dependency. The friction between the tire and the road surface plays a crucial part in the theory behind traction control and the report describes in detail how traditional traction control systems are designed to make compromises, in wheel spin tolerances, and thus not uses the maximum amount of traction. To increase performance traction control systems continuously have to optimise this amount and also minimise its fluctuations. Wheels travel with different speeds when cornering, thus the traction control system has to compensate for this, and the second mathematical model in the report describes this in detail.

Finally an increase in performance is verified through the usage of NTRAC in the formula car KTHR2. During an international competition in the summer of 05, at Bounthingsthorp proving grounds, Leicestershire, England, under perfect weather conditions, a time-saving of nine percentage where registered at acceleration tests from 0 to 75 meters.

Wood, Benjamin M. "Overcoming the barriers to sustainable motorsport." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2011. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/51907/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this Engineering Doctorate was to identify and develop strategies and technologies to overcome the barriers to sustainable motorsport. A top-down approach was taken beginning with an industry-wide strategy and ending with the development of individual sustainable technologies. After identifying a set of target guidelines for the industry to follow, the economic, social and environmental barriers to the future sustainability of motorsport were identified. These barriers were addressed through the creation of an industry-wide regulatory strategy followed by an innovative company-focussed technology development process; High Performance Sustainability (HPS). The HPS process was used to develop Eco One, a revolutionary racing car featuring environmentally sustainable technology which generated significant public engagement and facilitated evaluation of the HPS process. This technology demonstrator was used to make iterative improvements to the HPS process, resulting in HPS2, a second generation process with greater focus on performance and the development of sustainable technology. This novel process was used to research and develop individual environmentally-sustainable technologies; natural fibre reinforced composites and the use of high performance biodiesel. Firstly lignin, a natural, renewable, waste material was added to hemp/epoxy composites as an innovative compatibiliser with a resulting improvement in mechanical properties. Secondly, engine parameters were modified for the use of biodiesel made from soybean oil, resulting in torque equal to diesel fuel but with a lower in-cylinder pressure. The impact of these technologies is the opportunity to use renewable materials for high performance applications, potentially competing with existing motorsport technology. The innovations presented in this Engineering Doctorate led to recognised expertise in sustainable motorsport within WMG, and in turn resulted in sustainable motorsport projects including WorldFirst, in which a Formula 3 car was developed featuring natural fibre composites, high performance biodiesel and recycled carbon fibre components. The impacts of this work are the establishment of industrial projects with race teams and constructors, conference attendances and peer-reviewed publications, and dissemination of research through the development of academic courses and extensive media coverage.

Abstract:
A sponsorship within sports can be based on different criteria depending on what type of company you ask. Thus, it is important for the athletes to be able to present the most attractive criteria within their sponsorship proposals. The aim of this study is therefore to provide a better understanding on which criteria that attracts companies to sponsor women in motorsport. The result from this study can thereby guide women in motorsport regarding which criteria they should include in their sponsorship proposal. Moreover, the result can help companies who are interested in getting a deeper understanding on the benefits that follows by sponsoring women in motorsport. The study is exploratory with a qualitative approach that has been conducted through case studies, which was based on semi-structured interviews with four companies. These companies were selected since they are currently sponsoring women in motorsport and could therefore explain which criteria, they find attractive with these sponsorships. The main findings of this study show that the criteria that mostly attracts companies to sponsor women in motorsport are media exposure, brand awareness and equality between genders.

Abstract:

As data logging technologies advanced, a point was reached where amateur motorsport enthusiasts could now log their vehicle's data while competing in motorsport events. Many drivers take advantage of these new data logging technologies but lack options for analyzing the data during and after motorsport events beyond standard tables and two-dimensional graphs. This thesis investigated the use of GIS as a tool for analyzing data collected during a motorsport event through time geography approaches and three-dimensional geovisualization techniques. Data were collected from the vehicle to analyze the speed and handling of the car while heart rate data were collected from the driver to help understand the driver's emotional state while navigating the course. Analysis of the data showed that time geography visualizations in a three-dimensional environment could help drivers better understand the data that had been collected from their vehicles and themselves and use it to improve their future performances when driving in motorsport events.

Holland, Justin J. "The role of hydration in motorsport performance." Thesis, University of Queensland, 2018.

Abstract:
Motorsport is a physically and cognitively demanding sport, where driver-athletes compete in compensable environments. The term ‘driver-athlete’ acknowledges that drivers possess certain unique skills that have been developed through training and practice that allows them to compete for a prize, recognition and admiration from peers and the public. Hydration and physical fitness are two important variables that may assist in a driver’s preparation for a race and subsequent health, safety and performance. This thesis has three main research studies that aim to understand the associated demands of motor racing, the attitudes and behaviours of drivers towards thermoregulation and physical fitness and finally understanding how these variables interact to determine the impact of dehydration on a driver’s health, safety and performance. The studies collectively contributed to better understand how to optimise the performance of the driver-athlete. Study one aimed to explore the hydration status and thermoregulatory responses during Australian Supercar racing. Data was collected from Friday through to Sunday of three separate race meetings from three professional Australian Supercar drivers. Friday races consisted of three 20 – 30 min practice sessions, Saturday was a 20 min qualifying session and two races (36 – 56 min) with one endurance race (75 – 116 min) on Sunday. Contrary to our hypothesis, drivers progressively hydrated over the three days in accordance with a gradual increase in fluid intake, despite rarely consuming fluid during a race due to unpalatable water temperatures and limited availability of fluid. Morning urine samples indicated a hypohydrated [urine specific gravity (USG) >1.020] state for 50, 44 and 44% of the samples collected on Friday (n = 6), Saturday (n = 9) and Sunday (n = 9), respectively. Importantly, 25% (n = 16) of tympanic temperatures were >38.5oC indicating moderate heat strain and moderate-to-extreme dehydration [42% of total samples (n = 158) with a USG >1.020], suggesting that some drivers may be susceptible to hyperthermia and dehydration in compensable environments. Study two determined if the observed behaviours in study one were related to the attitudes of drivers towards hydration, and whether those behaviours were a construct of their purported benefit/decrement on performance. Using a survey that was divided into three components: 1) attitudes and perceptions, 2) behaviours, and 3) demographics was completed. The survey included a total of 79 questions on a Likert-type scale rating importance or agreeance, and in some questions, acknowledgement of select behaviours. A total of one hundred drivers (56.5% of respondents) completed the survey in full. Driver-athletes noted the importance of fluid balance (95.0% of respondents) and physical fitness (80.0% of respondents) in relation to performance. A higher (p = 0.002) number of professional drivers (71.4%) noted the importance of measuring body mass for hydration status compared to amateur drivers (37.5%). A higher (p = 0.008) percentage of amateur drivers (70.8%) indicated that they don’t follow an individualised hydration plan in comparison to professional drivers (42.9%). External cooling devices were used across a race weekend, including cool suits and cold towels (both 16.0%), and ice vests and ice baths (4.0%). Plain water was predominately ingested (95.0%) across a race weekend by drivers, however there was a distinct lack of access to fluids during a race. There was an apparent lack of translation from attitudes to behaviours for idealistic hydration, thermoregulation and physical fitness-related practices. Drivers clearly acknowledge the importance of hydration, thermoregulation and physical fitness, but the importance placed on measuring these factors to prevent dehydration and heat stress is not evident. The preceding studies informed the methodological design for research study three. In this study, the effect of dehydration on simulated motor racing performance and physiological parameters were investigated. In a crossover-control design, participants (n = 15) were randomised (counter-balanced) to either a no fluid trial [2.00% body mass loss (BML)] or fluid trial to achieve a 0.50% body mass gain. Passive dehydration to 2.00% BML was achieved via sauna exposure (43.3°C). The control group was also exposed to the sauna, however received plain room temperature water in 9.5 ± 1.5 bottles of water every 10 min to achieve a 0.50% body mass gain. After a 2 h rest period participants raced around the Bathurst race-track using a fixed-based racing simulator for 60 min in conditions (43.2°C) similar to that of Australian Supercar racing. Dehydration appeared to have no influence (p = 0.293) on racing performance, however, there was a trend (p = 0.007; r = 0.516) for drivers to have more severe errors towards the end of the race. There was a positive (p < 0.05) effect of being hydrated on peak measurements of core temperature (37.7 ± 0.3 vs. 38.0 ± 0.2°C), physiological strain index (3.5 ± 1.1 vs. 4.1 ± 1.1) and heart rate (121 ± 16 vs. 129 ± 16 beats.min-1) in comparison to being dehydrated. This data indicates that entering a race of 60 min duration in a dehydrated state (2.69% body mass loss) resulted in no performance benefit or detriment, despite participants reporting feelings of thirst and reduced alertness, concentration, and mood at the beginning of the race. Overall, this thesis shows that hydration does have a role in a driver’s health, safety and performance. However, the importance and hierarchical priority of hydration in a driver’s preparation is highly individual with substantial variations in thermoregulatory responses to motor racing. It appears the hydration behaviours and attitudes of drivers have limited impact on their racing performance, however, may have effects on their health and thermoregulatory capacity. Collectively, the present results provide insight into the driver-athlete and the role that hydration has on a driver's health, safety and performance.

Abstract:

The emphasis in cluster theory has been in explaining how and why clustering might contribute to competitive advantage for co-located firms, and hence for the economy. While firms may be encouraged to co-locate to gain from transactional, institutional and knowledge benefits, threats to economic sustainability have been associated with a deterioration of advantages and a failure to adapt, resulting in a decline of competitiveness. This thesis reconsiders industry clusters as organisational populations, suggesting a mechanism through which the population and the resource environment can adapt and survive Cluster sustainability is described as a evolutionary process in which the population and resources of the cluster adapt through the creation of new member firms. Based on an embedded case study of eight firm formation events taking place in the UK motorsport industry, the research examines how an industry cluster regenerates and reproduces itself. The concentration, complexity, and diversity of supply and demand comprising the cluster’s organisational population generate a resource environment which generates creation of new members compatible with the cluster’s knowledge architecture. New member entry depends on the absorptive capacity of the cluster, while contributing to the ability to identify, diffuse and exploit new knowledge. Sustainability of industry clusters is associated with the characteristics that support new member creation.

Bottomley, M. "Optimisation of robust active flow control technologies for motorsport applications." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2015. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/809435/.

Full text
Abstract:
Active flow control systems have the potential to allow future designs of ground vehicles and aircraft to realise increased operational efficiency through improved optimisation of the flow, leading to decreased fuel use and reduced environmental impact. To achieve this, dynamic actuators are required that can adapt to the changing conditions experienced over low-speed, high-lift aerofoils where separation control can be particularly advantageous. Synthetic Jet Actuators (SJAs) are a form of the technology that shows promise; they are small, low-mass and low-power devices, which means that they can potentially realise the system efficiency a vehicular application of active flow control requires. The aims of this research were directed to achieving better understanding and robustness of the control authority from SJA systems at Reynolds Numbers close to real-world operations. The characteristics of the control authority from a round-orifice SJA array positioned near the leading-edge position of an NACA0015 aerofoil have been investigated at Re = O(10^6). Measurements demonstrated how the jet flow imparts a controlling mechanism over the separating boundary layer flow, and hence can be used to improve the overall efficiency of the wing. A series of parametric alterations to the test conditions was made in order to understand the robustness of the control effect. The forcing frequency was decoupled from the dynamic response of the actuators themselves by means of amplitude modulation. The results demonstrated that successful control could be achieved with significantly reduced input power requirements, improving net efficiency. The effectiveness was shown to be largely independent of the frequency when used in this way. Using a counterstreamwise jet orientation to control the same basic separated flow condition was not found to generate significant improvements in operational efficiency. The results suggest an in-depth understanding of the jet flow, and the excitation location in relation to the point where the flow separates is important when designing the actuators. Tests also considered a different flow condition with a stronger adverse pressure gradient, by generating a ground-effect flow over the suction surface. The control authority afforded was diminished in the more adverse flow states. The performance of the actuators was considered, and the system achieved a larger than unity Figure of Merit, indicating the overall benefit of control shows direct relevance for realising practical flow control systems. The results indicate arrays of SJA’s are capable of delivering energy savings when managing this type of flow.

Lambert, Stephen. "Advancing the development of hybrid electric vehicles in motorsport : innovation report." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2013. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/58303/.

Abstract:
Club motorsport, a low cost, amateur form of motorsport, forms a significant part of the motorsport industry in the United Kingdom. If efforts are not made to move towards more environmentally friendly technologies, then this form of motorsport is at risk of becoming irrelevant. One approach taken by other motorsport sectors has been to implement hybrid electric vehicle technology, which can result in improved vehicle performance on the race track. However, the companies that operate in the club motorsport sector do not typically have the resources and experience necessary to develop these technologies. An innovative process was used to guide the design of a new hybrid electric vehicle drivetrain for use in club motorsport. This process made use of the ability for vehicle manufacturers to set the vehicle specifications in club motorsport. A conjoint analysis of customer requirements was carried out, a first for the industry, and led to the development of a market simulation tool. A vehicle simulation tool was then developed to assist in the evaluation of the hybrid electric drivetrain design options. The result of following this process was a new and innovative hybrid electric drivetrain installed in a Westfield Sportscars Sport Turbo, reducing 0-60mph acceleration time from 5.4 seconds to 3.8 seconds. An innovative type of system control was implemented, by where the driver is given a finite amount of boost energy for use throughout the race. The drivetrain can also be easily transferred to other vehicle platforms, as the first shelf engineered hybrid drivetrain for motorsport, allowing its use by multiple manufacturers across the club motorsport and niche vehicle sectors. This project has shown that it is possible to implement environmentally friendly technologies, such as hybrid electric vehicle technology, into club motorsport and be able to meet customer, technical and cost requirements. The process that has been developed enables innovation in hybrid electric race car design. This has been shown in the development of a hybrid electric vehicle suitable for use, and sale, in the club motorsport industry.

Parker, Matthew C. "A system for aiding the user assimilation of acquired motorsport data." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2010. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7069.

Full text
Abstract:
A racing car is a complex machine, featuring many adjustable components, used to influence the car's performance and tune it to a circuit, the prevailing conditions and the driver's style. A race team must continually monitor the car's performance and a race engineer communicates with the driver to decide how best to optimise the car as well as how to extract most from the driver himself. Analysis of acquired vehicle performance data is an intrinsic part of this process. This thesis presents an investigation into methods to aid the motorsport user's assimilation of acquired vehicle performance data. The work was directly prompted by personal experience and published opinion. These both find that the full potential of acquired data in motorsport is seldom realised, primarily because of the time available to analyse data with the resources available to a racing team. A complete solution including data management methods and visualisation tools was conceived here as a means of addressing these issues. This work focuses on part of the overall solution concept; the development of a visualisation application giving the user a detailed and realistic three-dimensional replay of a data set. The vehicle s motion is recreated from acquired data through a kinematic vehicle model driven by measured damper and ride height data. Ground displacement is computed from wheel speed and accelerometer measurements as well as a new optical sensor approach aiming to achieve better accuracy. This implements a two dimensional auto-correlation of doubly exposed ground images, calibrated to distance on the basis of an integrated ride height measurement. Three sensor units are used to allow not only displacement but also heading data to be derived. The result of the work described in this thesis is the proof of principle of both a display and sensor system, both of which were deemed worthy of further study and development to fully meet the demands of the motorsport application. The visualisation tool presented a new and applicable method of viewing acquired data, whilst the sensor was proven as a new method of deriving vehicle position data, from potentially low cost hardware.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The prime objective of the research is to establish why commercial sponsors use motor sport as an element of their marketing communications. A comparison has been undertaken between car and bike racing, as represented by Formula One and MotoGp, to establish any differences in approach. The initial historical element of the research revealed that motor sport had been sponsored by vehicle manufacturers since the origins of the petrol combustion engine in the late 19th century. Any suggestion that sponsorship of motor sport is a recent, late 20th century science has been dispelled. The investigation found that the sponsors of top level car racing place major importance on achieving awareness for their brands through media exposure, particularly television. This aim is shared by motorcycle racing sponsors too and a common model is identified. Where motor cycle racing is specifically concerned the research established that there is an almost identical approach to the usage and application of sponsorship to that in car racing. The only difference being that the wider commercialisation of F1, in which brands outside those intimately involved with automotive industries have made use of motor sport sponsorship, has been around for longer than that in motorcycle racing. The motorcycle sponsors have therefore taken slightly longer to reach the same level of marketing sophistication in a sport which is recognized as having less money overall. The research reveals that the most important element of the business plan for both types of motor sport relies largely on a business model linked to global television audiences. Such audiences are seen as vital in generating awareness of sponsors and their products. Such plans provide an entirely relevant platform for the initial steps of the AIDA theory (Awareness; Interest; Desire; Action) of product adoption. The research also identifies that this commonality of approach is not entirely accidental as similar promoters have been involved at the top level of both sports. The research advises that the future of motor sport should continue to involve the application of the latest technologies appropriate to passenger vehicles if it is to continue unhindered. It is suggested that motor sport should become the definitive technological test bed for vehicle propulsion systems that are sustainable and kind to the environment.

Abstract:
Gilles Villeneuve, Ayrton Senna, Greg Moore, Dale Earnhardt. Only four of a number of high-profile race car drivers to have lost their lives taking part in events at the highest levels of motorsport. The aim of the present study is to analyze the coverage of death in high-level motorsport in the printed sports news of La Presse and The Toronto Star in Canada for the 1982 to 2017 period inclusively. Mobilizing the existing literature on risk-taking, namely Lyng’s concept of edgework, as well as Hall’s work on representation, a thematic analysis of a sample of sports news articles (N=488) was conducted. Three main themes emerged from the analysis. The discussion surrounding motorsport fatalities revolved around the individual (the deceased driver), the social aspect of the death (primarily the family members left behind), and journalistic practices (how to cover death). In conclusion, the coverage of death in motorsport was found to be an instance where the athlete is heroized and sometimes revered even decades after their death. In this aspect, the figure of Gilles Villeneuve remains pivotal to motorsport discussions in Canada, even to this day. It also was found that sports journalists, through their coverage of deadly accidents, enact the traditional roles of the journalist in offering social criticism of their subject matter to their readers, and that motorsport drivers enact a highly specific type of masculinity when practicing their sport.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Doutoramento em Engenharia Eletrónica
The main motivation for the work presented here began with previously conducted experiments with a programming concept at the time named "Macro". These experiments led to the conviction that it would be possible to build a system of engine control from scratch, which could eliminate many of the current problems of engine management systems in a direct and intrinsic way. It was also hoped that it would minimize the full range of software and hardware needed to make a final and fully functional system. Initially, this paper proposes to make a comprehensive survey of the state of the art in the specific area of software and corresponding hardware of automotive tools and automotive ECUs. Problems arising from such software will be identified, and it will be clear that practically all of these problems stem directly or indirectly from the fact that we continue to make comprehensive use of extremely long and complex "tool chains". Similarly, in the hardware, it will be argued that the problems stem from the extreme complexity and inter-dependency inside processor architectures. The conclusions are presented through an extensive list of "pitfalls" which will be thoroughly enumerated, identified and characterized. Solutions will also be proposed for the various current issues and for the implementation of these same solutions. All this final work will be part of a "proof-of-concept" system called "ECU2010". The central element of this system is the before mentioned "Macro" concept, which is an graphical block representing one of many operations required in a automotive system having arithmetic, logic, filtering, integration, multiplexing functions among others. The end result of the proposed work is a single tool, fully integrated, enabling the development and management of the entire system in one simple visual interface. Part of the presented result relies on a hardware platform fully adapted to the software, as well as enabling high flexibility and scalability in addition to using exactly the same technology for ECU, data logger and peripherals alike. Current systems rely on a mostly evolutionary path, only allowing online calibration of parameters, but never the online alteration of their own automotive functionality algorithms. By contrast, the system developed and described in this thesis had the advantage of following a "clean-slate" approach, whereby everything could be rethought globally. In the end, out of all the system characteristics, "LIVE-Prototyping" is the most relevant feature, allowing the adjustment of automotive algorithms (eg. Injection, ignition, lambda control, etc.) 100% online, keeping the engine constantly working, without ever having to stop or reboot to make such changes. This consequently eliminates any "turnaround delay" typically present in current automotive systems, thereby enhancing the efficiency and handling of such systems.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to review the norms and ideals within the area of motorsports. The main focus is within circuit racing and particularly Formula one, WEC, World Endurance Championship, and the Le Mans 24h race. Furthermore, the ambition is to examine culture within the sports as well as what it will take to reach a professional level as a driver in a major racing series. A total of three (3) interviews have been conducted to further deepen the question at issue. Alongside the interviews, two (2) observations has been executed internationally to study the theories on site of racing events. The gathered material has since been analyzed and two perspectives have emerged: The image of the sport; and the image of the driver. From the two (2) perspectives, we can derive more subordinate perspectives. Derived from the image of the sport the following perspectives arose: danger and rivalry. From the image of the driver the following three perspectives can be procured; the vulnerable driver, the perfectionist as well as the (un)healthy driver.   The result is pointing to a sport in constant alteration. From the incipient events of motorsport leading up to present, there has been a substantial development both within the sport itself as well as from a driver perspective. As the sport evolved from notoriously dangerous and potentially lethal to relatively safe, other elements have emerged and become major factors such as individualism, rivalry and politics. With a larger commercialization and professionalization, the demands of the driver have increased substantially. The driver needs to be more complete than ever, both on the track as well as off the track.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the regulation of innovation and sociotechnical transitions within the European automotive sector, as they relate to energy-efficient innovations (EEI) in the aftermath of the 2008 global economic crisis. Energy-efficient innovation is a technological solution, which offers a way to decouple mobility from harmful greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and has become a key problem-solving framework. These innovations also require stringent regulations and market-based incentives to influence automakers and other production firms to develop cleaner vehicles and technologies. This thesis format is one that incorporates publishable papers, and as such, covers the following four subject areas within the automotive industry: • The challenges of regulating EU automotive emissions. • The link between motorsport and ‘low-carbon’ innovations in passenger cars. • A theoretical argument for established automakers as ‘radical’ innovators. • The early disruptive effects of connected and autonomous vehicles (AVs). This research seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of sustainable sociotechnical transitions, through the examination of government interventions via policy instruments, meant to incentivize R&D within private firms, and result society’s adoption of new technologies. This thesis also seeks to better explain the dynamics of disruptive innovation, and its impact on society and the economy. Understanding the processes of sociotechnical change at the sectoral level not only enables better policy design and policy outcomes, but also facilitates more accurate assessments when evaluating the implications of future sociotechnical transitions. The findings in this thesis are also timely, as they provide future researchers with additional resources to consider, as the global automotive industry prepares once more to undergo several significant transformations.

Abstract:

This qualitative study examined the psychological demands of Formula One Racing, and the psychological skills former Formula One drivers utilized to meet those demands. The participants were nine former drivers, from six different countries, who have competed in at least one Formula One World Drivers Championship grand prix. The qualitative data were gathered using a semi-structured interview framework, developed by the researcher, to explore the psychological skills established from other validated psychological skills questionnaires, such as the Test of Performance Strategies, (Thomas, Murphy, & Hardy, 1999). Eight of the interviews were done via Skype, and one interview was performed in person. The interviews were transcribed verbatim, and then sent to the participants to make any edits or corrections. Once the transcriptions were approved, the data were coded by the researcher using constant comparative methods as described in Charmaz (2006). Three phases of coding resulted in four themes and 14 sub-themes. The themes that emerged include: (1) Applied Sport Psychology in Formula One, (2) Psychological Skills, (3) Uncontrollable Aspects of Competition, (4) Career Components. Drivers used various psychological skills in a focused effort to aid their performance. Drivers discussed the important role psychology plays in their sport, and the psychological resources available to them during their career. Drivers discussed the danger element of their competition, and how they and their competitors managed the fear associated with racing. The drivers in this study competed in an era that was much more dangerous than the current era of Formula One racing (Barnes, 2013). The drivers' use of psychological skills, and perceptions of sport psychology, may guide consultants working with race car drivers and those working with other populations that have similar psychological and physical demands.

Abstract:
The dream of the human being has always been to reach the perfection. This is true for life in general, but also for sports competitions including motorsport. In car racing, the optimum is represented by the perfect lap, performed by the driver in the minimum possible time, following the ideal race line with the appropriate velocity. However, due to the intrinsic nature of human being this is unfeasible and the only way to get as close as possible to the perfection is to rely on technology and artificial intelligence. Focusing on motorsport, the actual knowledge of vehicle dynamics and the development of optimization techniques can help in reaching great improvements in terms of race performance. This is exactly the objective of this thesis in which the implementation of a virtual coach for super sports cars has been carried out, in order to provide useful suggestions to the driver during and after the performance. In particular, the algorithm on which the virtual coach is based, computes the ideal race line and the optimal velocity in every point, giving also an accurate estimation of the best reachable lap time. The virtual coach is able to adapt to each super sports car and circuit, since the vehicle and racetrack models are generated starting from the physical parameters introduced by the user as inputs to the algorithm. The optimization of the race line is performed by solving the minimum lap time problem through the optimal control theory and the optimal velocity is computed for each point of the ideal trajectory. After the first lap, the algorithm associates the driver to a category level and shows which are the sectors of the circuit where a higher improvement is possible, adapting the targets in terms of lap time and velocity to the driver’s capabilities and allowing a step by step improving of the performances. The algorithm has been tested on a large variety of vehicles and circuits, providing accurate results in terms of ideal race lines and velocities.

Abstract:
