Full textThis dissertation is invested on image matching methods, and their applications. It is divided into two parts: methodological and engineering. The first tackles decision methods used to match features between images. We found it on the "stable marriage" paradigm. Several algorithms are developed with constraints added, as global satisfaction or equity, for better adapting to application needs as controlling a certain local/global balance in the decision. Then, we introduce a generic matching system based on these algorithms where stable marriages become the key mechanism. The second part is devoted to applicative processes building on this matching core. First, level lines and their junctions are selected for primitive features to be paired in all applications. Then, the adapted implementation of the core is studied in the following applications: a registration system, a system for obstacle detection from stereo pairs, and a generic system for motion analysis. The matching quality is experimented on and tested in all three applications. It is compared with vote based and dynamic programming based matching results

Full textWell over a century after the end of the Victorian era, one can still attract a new perspective on the iconography of female British art of this period by observing the representations of Marian resurgence. The return of the Virgin Mary figure in England appears to be problematic in many aspects - artistic, moral, social, historic and religious - which this thesis attempts to analyze. This thesis also seeks to understand and demonstrate how and why this country, in light of the fierce resistance of such representation once distinctive of the political and religious view in Britain, has shifted from an almost non-existent stance of such movement into its acceptance in a nineteen century of eclecticism and internationalism. Moreover, this thesis aims on one hand to defend the idea of an unfamiliar but genuine "English Madonna" and on the other hand to further establish the very fact of Marian resurgence in British cultural and geographical milieu. Likewise, this thesis will examine the influence of the Royal Academy of Arts, the Oxford Movement, the Catholic Revival, the Grand Tour, Romanticism, the Gothic Revival, Nazarene and Pre-Raphaelite movement, Orientalism, Aestheticism and Symbolism. Herewith, the following diverse arts are taken into consideration: painting, sculpture, architecture, music, stained glass, engraving, book art, poetry, jewelry, literature, textiles and photography. These unorthodox representations intermingle with those of Queen Victoria and those of the English woman, offering a unique phenomenon of a sacred iconography, namely the worship of "Madonnas secular" through an explicitly Marian or implicitly sacred inspirational image

Full textThe juvenile stage of animals is often much of a mystery to scientists. Moreover, juvenile survival is known to be a strong determinant for the future of a population. Indeed, juvenile animals are known to face high mortality during the first months after independence, with survival rates improving with age. One ultimate hypothesis implies that juveniles have a lower survival rate than adults because of their lack of experience. Thus they are initially poor foragers and require a learning period (immaturity) to improve their efficiency before being able to bear breeding and its associated energetic costs. Proximal factors also influence juvenile survival, such as environmental fluctuations and competition. Studies on terrestrial animals have provided useful information thanks to the possibility of direct observation and, recently, bio-logging technologies. However, collecting data in the marine environment is more difficult, particularly when juveniles are concerned. Long-lived marine species such as seabirds have an extensive immature period extending from a few years up to more than ten years. The offspring of these species will usually leave their natal site and disperse at sea for several years before returning to breed on land, most of the time at their place of birth. This makes it difficult to obtain direct observations, and so documenting their first journey at sea to learn more about their behavioural and foraging ecology is a challenge. In this context, this PhD aims to unravel at least part of the mystery of juvenile seabirds’ early life by investigating the first months at sea of newly fledged individuals from several long-lived species of procellariiformes. Using state of the art advancements in biotelemetry, I was able to follow, at sea, by satellite a large set of juveniles from nine closely related species of albatross and petrel breeding in the French Southern Territories of the Southern Ocean : Crozet, Kerguelen and Amsterdam Islands. Some of these species had never been tracked before. Trajectories were analysed using various new statistical methods that allowed movement strategies, alongside foraging behaviour and spatial distributions, to be described, all in tight link with environmental conditions. The findings were discussed in the light of a comparison with adults of the same species. Using this huge dataset I first examined the dispersal strategies of young birds that had left their nest and were totally independent from their parents. I showed that the strategies, as well as the amount of innate information controlling them are highly variable depending on species. Their movements take them in various habitats following or not the parental strategies. The amount of variability in juvenile strategies is linked to potential plasticity when facing environmental changes. These parameters are related to the history life trait of species, and might affect demography and population dynamics. In addition, by analysing juvenile wandering albatross tracks I showed that although they quickly learn the basics of flight and foraging optimization required to survive at sea, behavioural differences with adults persist in time, suggesting that non-observable behaviours need a longer period of learning and memorisation. Finally, whatever the strategy adopted, it seems to be driven in part by intraspecific competition since juveniles mitigate competition with older birds by segregating spatially. This last point highlights the crucial need of acknowledging age-related distribution when making management decisions to protect seabird populations. This work provides new insights about several major aspects of the at-sea ecology of naïve individuals foraging alone in a highly unpredictable environment. We learn here how instinct followed by experience shape specific early life strategies that allow young birds to deal with environmental conditions and interspecific competition so as to be able to survive

Full textThis dissertation examines religious same-sex unions ceremonies in the U. S. , as well as controversies produced by such practices. Although those rites are presently supported by networks of "welcominf" protestant churches, they spread at the end of th 1960s when gay churches were founded and when some protestant pastors began to see homosexual persons as worthy of their pastoral involvement. The support of clergypersons in favor of same-sex union became a collective cause, especially within the Episcopale Church, at the begining of 1980s, and particulary with the AIDS crisis. Toward 1996, when the implementation of gay marriage became an emergent possibility, controversies and debates within protestant churches climaxed : the United Methodist Church brought some pastors to trial because they had performed "homosexual unions. " However, all those controversies and debates are not inevitable : in the small rural state of Vermont, "civil unions" came to be seen and performed as a routinized ceremony

Full textSea turtles are increasingly threatened by the direct and indirect effects of human activities. Their life cycle is complex, shared between various, and often very distant, habitats. Their conservation therefore requires identifying the habitats occupied at each stage of life and the migration routes between these different habitats. While the spatial ecology of adult turtles is relatively well known, particularly through satellite monitoring, the situation is not the same for juveniles which pelagic development phase remains largely unobserved. In that context, numerical simulation constitutes an appropriate tool to explore the dispersal of juvenile sea turtles from their natal beaches. Until now, simulations were mostly performed under the assumption that juveniles disperse passively with oceanic currents. In this PhD thesis we present STAMM (Sea Turtle Active Movement Model), a new model of active dispersal that aims to go beyond the initial hypothesis of passive drift. In STAMM, juvenile sea turtles move under the influence of ocean currents and swimming movements motivated by the search for favorable habitats. This model is applied here to the study of the dispersal of juveniles from three sea turtle populations: leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) of the Western Pacific and the Northwest Atlantic Oceans, and loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) of the Western Indian Ocean. Our results show that, although ocean currents broadly shape juvenile dispersal areas, simulations including habitat-driven movements provide more realistic results than passive drift simulations. Habitat-driven movements prove to deeply structure the spatial and temporal distribution of juveniles. In particular, they induce seasonal latitudinal migrations that reduce cold induce mortality. They also push simulated individuals to concentrate in productive areas that cannot be accessed through pure passive drift. These results challenge the classical view of juveniles circulating passively around oceanic gyres. They should rapidly be taken into account for the implementation of targeted conservation measures concerning juvenile sea turtles

Full textBecause of the main environmental constraints, studying the motor performance in swimming is a complex task. Traditional techniques of kinematics analysis are often inappropriate and some of basic knowledge of swimmers’ motor behaviour (especially under the water) is still unknown. Crossing the boundaries of different fields of expertise, as wide as motor control, neuro-cognitive sciences, biomechanics or computer vision sciences, it is now possible to consider new methods built to analyse athletes performance and to formulate theoretical models adapted to explain the motor coordination involved during swimming events. Consequently, the main purposes of the present work were twofold. Firstly, new camcorder calibration methods were proposed and their accuracies were tested. Those methods were thought to be more adapted for kinematic analysis in swimming. Secondly, high-level swimmers propulsive efficiency has been analysed during the underwater phase of the start (glide phase and underwater undulatory swimming). Moreover, motor coordination as well as movements control strategies involved during this phase have been identified and linked to the swimmers propulsive efficiency

Full textThe amount of sand that can be mobilized on a sedimentary bed or sediment supply, has an important impact on the bed morphodynamics. There are many coastal areas subjected to the limitation of sediment that can play a significant role in the erosion-accretion processes of beaches or can impact human activities. The impact of sediment supply on the morphodynamics of a sedimentary bed subjected to a current is experimentally studied in a current flume. The flow velocity is such that the bottom shear stress is higher than the critical shear stress for sediment threshold. The temporal evolution of ripple wavelength shows a significant dependence with the sediment supply. It is the same with parameters such as the height or the wavelength of the bedforms at equilibrium. A re-analysis of field data from Ferret 2011 is performed and the obtained results for the bedform migration velocity are compared with the experimental results. The influence of the sediment bedload transport and the migration velocity with the sediment supply can be modeled by the addition of a factor depending on the fraction of the bottom covered with movable sediment. The impact of the sediment supply on the sediment threshold is also experimentally studied with different roughness for the immobile bottom. Two methods of detection of the sediment threshold are developed in order to automate the acquisition and process as much as possible. The impact of the bottom roughness and the sediment supply on the sediment threshold for homogeneous, weakly heterogeneous and shellfish sediment is experimentally studied
