Full textIn the first chapter, the thesis presents a literature review on the process of social insertion of refugees. First of all, this theorical section does a critical analysis of the concepts used in the thesis like the notion of community and ethnic group, adaptation, integration and insertion. Secondly, the author presents the mere conclusions of different authors on the difficulties of social insertion of refuges in the north-american context. The two following parts are formed by a practical presentation : the second chapter presents a structural analysis of 22 life stories of salvadorian refugees in canada for 5 years at least. The same type of analysis prevails in the third chapter where the subjects studied are 22 iranian refugees. In both chapters important aspects in relation with the knowing of refugees are developped in the analysis of the datas. First of all, a brief picture of el salvador and iran. Secondly, an analysis of various dimensions of both groups, the socio-demographic characteristics, the family patterns, the pre-migratory context and the migratory process, the canadian settlement policy, the perception of the citizens attitudes in the host country, the process of social insertion, the life plans, the social relations and the loneliness feeling. The fourth chapter develops the perceptions of the refuges on social services concerned by settlement and protection of refugees. Those services are deeply involved in dealing with the difficulties of insertion of the refugees

Full textConsidering nation as a symbolic political collectivity, we examine the process through which it takes shape, in the quebecś case, from a theory of identity which combines representation and mobilization. On the basis of a description of the evolution of quebec's societal context since 1760, we present the genesis of the historically dominant forms of nationalism. Using the results of our interview survey, we analyze the affirmation of national sentiment in contemporary Quebec. The computer-assisted analysis of the discourse we have collected has enabled us to establish a typology of the forms of national sentiment. In studying the relation between these orders of representation, we have come to the conclusion that the unsuitability between these two interpretative frameworks hinders the process of political mobilization even more when the national sentiment is focused on a quest for opportunities than when it is focused on protecting specific established characteristics of identity

Full textThe amount of illustrated books published in Quebec between 1880 and 1940 is the result of a transfer and of an awareness of issues concerning research, practices and cultural movements – of simultaneously artistic, literary and editorial nature – borrowed by European trends and especially French ones. By the study of two hundred two illustrated novels and poetry collections destined to adults, the purpose is to identify the presence of the artistic and editorial French influence and the mechanisms of this contribution. The various aspects was built around three research axis : the possibilities of artistic formation of illustrators in Quebec and in France, the emergence of the Quebec editorial scope (the modern professional editor generates an important influence on the illustrated book’s layout) and the opening towards artistic modernity (page’s layout, techniques used, iconographic and stylistic content of the illustrations and evolution of the interaction document-images)

Full textThe link between Montreal Action française (later l’Action nationale) and the Paris Action française has been examined in ideological terms. Because of the difference between their ideologies, the manifest interest shown by the Quebec movement for its French homonym remaind a “mystery” in historiography. The author examins the question under a new light, that of the history of intellectuals, their sociocultural practices, and proposes a first taxonomy of intellectual movements. Indeed, intellectual movements characterize the new 20th c. “intellectuals” and their practices. Their structural development in France gives rise to cultural transfers. The author proposes a first taxonomy of intellectual movements. The “league of intellectuals” is the most ambitious type, and the Maurrassian league serves as a model of organization and strategy, studyed and adapted by the leaders of its Quebec homonym, despite important ideological differences. La Relève is influenced by Esprit, La Nation by Gringoire and Je suis partout : two ideological families that result from the Paris Action française’s condemnation by Rome. In the case of La Relève, the influence of personnalism is defining ; however, it is discovered closer to Maritain than to Mounier. Albeit La Nation adapts Gringoire’s successful style and Jeune Droite ideology, it distinguishes itself by her ideological evolution: rather than radicalizing istelf, it moderates its politics in the later 1930s. All three Quebec groups are thus inspired by French models that provide material for creating their own original movements
