Abstract:
Recent developments in social movement research have evidenced a greater underlying consensus in the field than one might have assumed. Efforts have been made to bridge different perspectives and merge them into a new synthesis. Yet, comparative discussion of the concept of ‘social movement’ has been largely neglected so far. This article reviews and contrasts systematically the definitions of ‘social movement’ formulated by some of the most influential authors in the field. A substantial convergence may be detected between otherwise very different approaches on three points at least. Social m

The current “cultural turn” in the study of social movements has produced a number of concepts formulating the cultural-symbolic dimension of collective actions. This proliferation, however, has resulted in some confusion about which cultural-symbolic concept is best applied to understanding cultural processes involved in social movements. We articulate a new definition of ideology that makes it an empirically useful concept to the study of social-movement mobilization. It is also formulated as autonomous of concepts such as culture and hegemony and of other cultural-symbolic concepts presentl

This master thesis has been conducted at Svea Teknik on behalf of Atlas Copco and deals with the design of a cutter head motion system for mechanical rock excavation machines. Mechanical rock excavation allows tunneling to be done with just one machine in a continuous process. Such a machine is called a tunnel boring machine (TBM) and excavates rock by pressing a rotating cutter head with disc cutters against the rock face. By moving the cutter head in different patterns, tunnels of different profiles and sizes can be excavated. Atlas Copco has currently a conceptual TBM with an associated cut
