Abstract:
This chapter discusses the history of the second Chicago movie, Roxie Hart (1942). This film is a notable deviation from how the various Chicagos look at Roxie’s character, because here, for the first and only time, she is not a sociopath. True, she is still brusque and insolent, and especially contemptuous of Amos. But she is not a walking con job. Previously, Roxies wanted to get off even though they were guilty. This Roxie wants to get off because she is innocent; she has agreed to let the press and the law paint her as a murderess only to become notorious and thus break into show business.

This chapter explores the background and production history behind Cecil B. DeMille’s adaptation of Watkins’ play. Chicago was a story that Hollywood had wanted to film, and it particularly attracted Cecil B. DeMille, because he liked to amuse his public by mating wicked doings with farce: exactly as Chicago did. However, DeMille did not share Watkins’ didactic fervor. Rather she used Chicago as a Breughelesque hellscape where, just outside the courtroom windows, the population raged with lawbreaking fever. What DeMille saw in the play was something so latent Watkins herself had not used it: t

This introductory chapter traces the path of Henry Mancini's career, highlighting the reasons why he became the first publicly successful and personally recognizable film composer in history. It suggests that Mancini was perfectly placed, by time and temperament, to be a bridge between the traditions of the big band period of World War II and the eclectic impatience of the baby boomer generation that followed, between the big formal orchestral film scores of Hollywood's so-called Golden Years and a modern American minimalist approach. On the one hand, his respect for pre-wartime pop and movie

SEE! HEAR! CUT! KILL!: Experiencing Friday the 13th, is the first book entirely devoted to the analysis of the Friday the 13 th franchise. The story a film tells is usually filtered through a particular perspective, or point of view. This book argues that slasher films, and the Friday the 13th movies particularly, use all the stylistic tools at their disposal to create a complex and emotionally intense approach to perspective, which develops and shifts across the decades. Chapter one discusses the history of perspective in horror, and the different critical con

Rethinking the Teen Movie is the first academic monograph to theorise the construction of identity in the Hollywood Teen Movie, one of the most popular, yet academically overlooked film genres. As such, the book constitutes a significant intervention in Film Studies, providing a reconsideration of such key tropes as the male juvenile delinquent figure, the makeover and the teen vampire. Providing detailed case studies of key films from the genre, the book provides an innovative overview of the genre, and its relationship to performativity, intersectionality, post-feminism, and the post-human.

In this chapter, the author highlights the value of online newspaper archives and digitized census, family history, and other sources that he consulted in his research about little-known scriptwriter from the silent era, Mary Murillo. He begins with a background on Murillo, a screenwriter in American cinema for ten years, then worked in British films for six or more years, and moved to work in French films at the start of the talkies. The fact that she had almost disappeared from dominant film history narratives says much about how women filmmakers have been allowed to slip out of the history

In 1975, the Broadway musical Chicago brought together a host of memes and myths, the gleefully subversive character of American musical comedy, the reckless glamor of the big-city newspaper, the mad decade of the 1920s, the work of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon—two of the greatest talents in the musical’s history—and the Wild West gangsterville that was the city of Chicago itself. The tale of a young woman who murders her departing lover and then tricks the jury into letting her off, Chicago seemed too blunt and cynical at first. This chapter details the early life of Henry Mancini. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1924 as Enrico Nicola Mancini, the young Henry would grow up just over the Pennsylvania border in the steel town of West Aliquippa, where two great rivers, the Allegheny and the Monongahela, come together to become the Ohio River. The first time Mancini became aware of the music score behind a movie was during a trip to the local movie theater with his father in 1935. Something in the grandiose score to a picture called The Crusaders, composed by Rudolf Kopp, made him pay attention to the role that music was play
