Abstract:
AbstractThe oxidation kinetics of forged 12Cr-MoVW steel was investigated in an air (N2+O2) atmosphere at 873-1073 K (Δ50 K) using thermogravimetric analysis. The oxidized samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction, and the surface and cross-sectional morphologies were examined using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The forged 12Cr-MoVW steel samples exhibited parabolic behavior and a low oxidation rate compared with their as-cast counterparts. A protective oxide layer was uniformly formed at relatively low temperature (≤973 K) for the forged samples, which thus exhibited better oxidation resistance than the as-cast ones. These oxides are considered solid-solution compounds such as (Fe, Cr)2O3.

Abstract:
The monoclonal antibodies MOv2 and MOv8, raised against ovarian carcinoma, were found to be directed against two non-crossreacting epitopes expressed on the same molecule. Immunochemical analysis of the MOv8 recognized epitope showed that the Lea oligosaccharide, or commercial anti-Lea MAb, but not the anti-Leb MAb, prevented MOv8 binding to the reference target cell line (SW626), indicating that it is carried by the Lea antigen. Since we previously reported that MOv2 also recognises the Lea antigen, these data suggest that Mov8 and Mov2 were directed against different epitopes on the same oligosaccharide chain. Bearing in mind the knowledge of the biochemical nature of the monoclonal antibody recognized epitopes (CaMOv2 and CaMOv8), the presence of the circulating molecules recognized by them was analyzed by double determinant immunoradiometric assay (DDIRMA) in 103 sera from ovarian carcinoma patients. Patients with clinical evidence of the disease (ED) with MOv2 and MOv8 reactive and negative tumors had sera reactivity in 67% and 19% respectively. Also, 26% of the patients with no clinical evidence of disease (NED) had positive sera. When we investigated the relationship between MOv2-MOv8 DDIRMA sera positivity and red blood cells (RBC) Lewis phenotype, a strong correlation was found between the Lea+ phenotype and DDIRMA sera reactivity in healthy donors (6/6) and in ovarian carcinoma patients (9/10) whatever their clinical condition. No Lea healthy donors gave evidence of MOv2-MOv8 reactive sera. In contrast, 33% and 57% of the sera from ED carcinoma patients with respectively Leab+ and Leab phenotype were positive. In conclusion, the percentage of DDIRMA positive cases previously reported in healthy donors and found here in ovarian carcinoma patients with MOv2 and MOv8 negative tumors or NED, was in agreement with Lea + phenotype frequency in the normal Caucasian population. However the Lewisa could represent a tumor-associated antigen in ED patients with Lea phenotype and MOv2-MOv8 DDIRMA might be useful for monitoring the disease

Abstract:
Today, there are more Egyptian obelisks outside of Egypt than there are left where they were made. The obelisks are certainly beautiful, but what lies beneath are uncountable hours, days and years of work. Work which made the obelisks end up where they are today. From quarrying these enormous pieces of stone by smashing rock against rock, to building ships without equal for their transportation. It is hard to understand the amount of resources, manpower and organization that went into creating these tall monuments. Therefore, this study will attempt to examine each step in transporting the obelisks, from the quarry to their destination. Where theories collide, the study will weigh them against each other critically to give a fuller account of the transportation of the obelisks of Egypt. This study will begin by presenting a background, or basis, which will be further built upon as it progresses. The first chapter is mainly focused around the circumstance of transportation, along with giving a basic description of obelisks as individual objects. The next step lies in studying the general shipbuilding techniques used in ancient Egypt. This in turn will help in understanding the obelisk ships and the loading and unloading of these vessels. The obelisk ships and their loading will be the focal point of this study. The mainstay of the sources used for this study comes from earlier theories. The primary sources of this study will mainly consist of textual remains along with depictions.

Abstract:

Background: The most important resource of today’s companies is human resources. This has lead to a vast literature in the field of Human Resource Management, and within that are the fields of motivation and career management. Given the importance of technology intensive companies’ and the fact that engineers are increasingly dissatisfied and recognized as being difficult to manage a part of the literature have focused upon management of engineers. In this it is widely ac-cepted that engineers need special treatment, however, literature is not complete and a part which, up until now, has gained little attention is the one concerning career mobility.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to identify the inducements and obstacles to the career mobility of engineers.

Frame of Reference: The first part of the theoretical framework covers motivation, in which the authors focus on McClelland’s Content Theory of Motivation, given its close connection to need for achievement, a central aspect in career mobility. The second part deals with previous research on management of engineers. Based on the Frame of Reference the authors construct the Career Mobility Model, which serve as a foundation for subsequent structure and interpretation.

Method: In order to fulfill the purpose of the thesis the authors chose a qualitative research method, and conducted twelve semis structured interviews. The results were then analyzed in the light of the theoretical framework.

Empirical Findings: The empirical findings consist of interviews with engineers of different ages, employment time and stages of their career. The interview results are organized based on the theoretical framework to aid forthcoming interpretation.

Analysis: In the analysis the authors apply the empirical findings on the Career Mobility Model, thus interpret the different obstacles and inducements to career mobility. The authors’ interpretations reveal a clear excess of obstacles compared to inducements at the company participating in the study.

Conclusions: By creating a challenging work situation and offering continuous education companies can create a good foundation for career mobility. However, without a uniform career management program combined with visible career routes and established communication channels a company will lack critical aspects of in-ducements to career mobility. Moreover, technical companies need to remember that the best specialist may not always be the best manager, given the many ob-stacles a specialist focused manager can induce.

Abstract:
The perception of the expression of traditional handcrafts needs to be challenged. Therefore his bachelor degree work aims to develop new expressions in contemporary men`s wear through experimentations with tubular braiding. This works aims to utilize and express a progressive approach of the technique in terms of materials and method with the desire to create a contemporary expression when a handcraft method is utilized in fashion Starting to explore the handcraft technique braiding the tubular braiding technique was found. While the technique itself is similar in expression and properties to flat braiding the tubular braiding opens up for other possibilities for garment construction. Using the tubular braid as a starting point, the aim is to explore new ways of constructing contemporary menswear garments with the technique itself as well to construct new materials and find to a new expressions. The work also deals with the gap between the technique flat braiding, tubular braiding, construction and materials with different properties altering the initial expression of the technique. By experimenting with unconventional materials and scale for such an handcraft technique as braiding the expression and the traditional view of braiding and its construction and use will be altered and questioned - discovering that the tubular braid has possibilities to construct or sculpt garments on the body in a seamless manner. Hopefully machine-engineers of the future can invent new and progressive braiding processes to create fabrics for commercial application in fashion and also understand the potential of the tubular braiding method formed by the examples here.

Abstract:
This chapter deals with the problem of including motion cues in VR applications. From the challenges of this technology to the latest trends in the field, the authors discuss the benefits and problems of including these particular perceptual cues. First, readers will know how motion cues are usually generated in simulators and VR applications in general. Then, the authors list the major problems of this process and the reasons why its development has not followed the pace of the rest of VR elements (mainly the display technology), reviewing the motion vs. no-motion question from several perspectives. The general answer to this discussion is that motion cues are necessary in VR applications—mostly vehicle simulators—that rely on motion, although, unlike audio-visual cues, there can be specific considerations for each particular solution that may suggest otherwise. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to analyze the requirements of each VR application before deciding upon this question.

Abstract:
Reactors of cyclic catalytic reformers require catalyst regeneration about every 7 days (∼50 cycles per year). To facilitate the in situ regeneration, large diameter motor operated valves (MOV) are used (typically Class 600 NPS 8 to NPS 16 API 600 gate block valves). Double block-n-bleed arrangements of the MOVs are used to assure isolation of the 350 psig 960°F process and regeneration media. The regeneration MOVs will be closed and in isolation for up to 4 days and can reach temperatures close to ambient depending on their distance from the process flow. Once the MOVs are swung open, the valve body quickly transitions from ambient temperature to 960°F over a matter of minutes. Such an extreme thermal shock has historically led to a number of cracks in the MOV valve bodies. With each unit having over 50 MOVs, it becomes expensive and time consuming to open every MOV at a scheduled turnaround, inspect, and repair any cracking noticed.
