Abstract:
Today, there are more Egyptian obelisks outside of Egypt than there are left where they were made. The obelisks are certainly beautiful, but what lies beneath are uncountable hours, days and years of work. Work which made the obelisks end up where they are today. From quarrying these enormous pieces of stone by smashing rock against rock, to building ships without equal for their transportation. It is hard to understand the amount of resources, manpower and organization that went into creating these tall monuments. Therefore, this study will attempt to examine each step in transporting the obelisks, from the quarry to their destination. Where theories collide, the study will weigh them against each other critically to give a fuller account of the transportation of the obelisks of Egypt. This study will begin by presenting a background, or basis, which will be further built upon as it progresses. The first chapter is mainly focused around the circumstance of transportation, along with giving a basic description of obelisks as individual objects. The next step lies in studying the general shipbuilding techniques used in ancient Egypt. This in turn will help in understanding the obelisk ships and the loading and unloading of these vessels. The obelisk ships and their loading will be the focal point of this study. The mainstay of the sources used for this study comes from earlier theories. The primary sources of this study will mainly consist of textual remains along with depictions.

Full text
Abstract:

Background: The most important resource of today’s companies is human resources. This has lead to a vast literature in the field of Human Resource Management, and within that are the fields of motivation and career management. Given the importance of technology intensive companies’ and the fact that engineers are increasingly dissatisfied and recognized as being difficult to manage a part of the literature have focused upon management of engineers. In this it is widely ac-cepted that engineers need special treatment, however, literature is not complete and a part which, up until now, has gained little attention is the one concerning career mobility.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to identify the inducements and obstacles to the career mobility of engineers.

Frame of Reference: The first part of the theoretical framework covers motivation, in which the authors focus on McClelland’s Content Theory of Motivation, given its close connection to need for achievement, a central aspect in career mobility. The second part deals with previous research on management of engineers. Based on the Frame of Reference the authors construct the Career Mobility Model, which serve as a foundation for subsequent structure and interpretation.

Method: In order to fulfill the purpose of the thesis the authors chose a qualitative research method, and conducted twelve semis structured interviews. The results were then analyzed in the light of the theoretical framework.

Empirical Findings: The empirical findings consist of interviews with engineers of different ages, employment time and stages of their career. The interview results are organized based on the theoretical framework to aid forthcoming interpretation.

Analysis: In the analysis the authors apply the empirical findings on the Career Mobility Model, thus interpret the different obstacles and inducements to career mobility. The authors’ interpretations reveal a clear excess of obstacles compared to inducements at the company participating in the study.

Conclusions: By creating a challenging work situation and offering continuous education companies can create a good foundation for career mobility. However, without a uniform career management program combined with visible career routes and established communication channels a company will lack critical aspects of in-ducements to career mobility. Moreover, technical companies need to remember that the best specialist may not always be the best manager, given the many ob-stacles a specialist focused manager can induce.

Abstract:
The perception of the expression of traditional handcrafts needs to be challenged. Therefore his bachelor degree work aims to develop new expressions in contemporary men`s wear through experimentations with tubular braiding. This works aims to utilize and express a progressive approach of the technique in terms of materials and method with the desire to create a contemporary expression when a handcraft method is utilized in fashion Starting to explore the handcraft technique braiding the tubular braiding technique was found. While the technique itself is similar in expression and properties to flat braiding the tubular braiding opens up for other possibilities for garment construction. Using the tubular braid as a starting point, the aim is to explore new ways of constructing contemporary menswear garments with the technique itself as well to construct new materials and find to a new expressions. The work also deals with the gap between the technique flat braiding, tubular braiding, construction and materials with different properties altering the initial expression of the technique. By experimenting with unconventional materials and scale for such an handcraft technique as braiding the expression and the traditional view of braiding and its construction and use will be altered and questioned - discovering that the tubular braid has possibilities to construct or sculpt garments on the body in a seamless manner. Hopefully machine-engineers of the future can invent new and progressive braiding processes to create fabrics for commercial application in fashion and also understand the potential of the tubular braiding method formed by the examples here.

Abstract:
This dissertation is an ethnographic study of how members of the Indo-Guyanese community traveled from Guyana to New York City, carrying with them distinct understandings of Hinduism informed by their multiple dislocations and how they utilize religion as ideology and practice to help cultivate their identities as Indo-Guyanese Americans. I argue religion as a mobile concept, what I have termed as ‘religion on the move,’ gives a theoretical frame to understand how devotees adapt religion to help them navigate their identities in unknown territories. By studying more than devout individuals in places of worship, I have followed Caribbean Hinduism and Indo-Guyanese Hindus in New York City to various sites to appreciate how religion informs their experiences, operates on different scales (spatially, politically, and temporally), and negotiates power structures. I found that the Indo-Guyanese Hindu community asserts their ethnicity through Caribbean Hinduism to become visible, to overcome marginalization and to claim belonging in the United States.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with two aspects of operators within the framework of Government and Binding theory; (i) how they are assigned their scope, and (ii) how they are licensed. In an attempt to answer these questions, the relation of Move $ alpha$ (such as scrambling, NP-movement, and wh-movement) to the scope of operators and the licensing of wh-elements, negative polarity items, and adverbs are examined. It is argued that scope assignment is dictated by the Scope Principle and the Empty Category Principle. It is also argued that licensing of operators is determined by the Feature-Dependent Item Criterion. These principles and criterion make use of the concept of Government Theory Compatibility, which is built into Relativized Minimality. It is suggested that this concept should be characterized in terms of a set of lexical features. The approach advocated here accounts for the interpretive and distributional behavior of operators without recourse to parameterization of LF principles.

Abstract:
Advances in the design and efficiency of cameras, combined with a significant increase in computational capabilities of machines, have directly resulted in the rapid evolution of computer vision systems. Cameras, which capture all texture, objects and motion in their field of view, provide tremendous potential as wearable sensors that provide aid in daily living. Given the advantages associated with visual sensors, they have been surprisingly under-used as wearables on the move. This thesis addresses the problem of visual recognition of human activity on the move from an egocentric point of view. The problem of perceived motion in the background brought about by the use of moving cameras, is handled by a novel method for background subtraction. Once foreground motion has been disambiguated, a unique representation of actions as collections of smaller space-time volumes is presented, using which two novel methods are proposed for the recognition of egocentric and external actions. The element of context plays a. vital role in complete understanding of human activities. This aspect is addressed through the recognition of user location using a Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping system. Activities and locations are modelled in a complementary manner, such that knowledge of what happens where enhances mapping of large environments and also increases accuracy of activity recognition. The combination of action recognition and location recognition is applied for sequential recognition of activities in continuous video, which in turn opens doors to applications such as life logging and activity retrieval. Results arc shown on datasets captured using a shoulder-worn camera as a solitary sensor. Although the proposed methods outperform the state of the art in egocentric visual activity recognition, it remains a. significant first step towards truly autonomous wearable assistance.

Abstract:
SEW-Eurodrive (SEW) is a company that manufactures and sells products in the field of electric motors, exercise electric motors, gearboxes, decentralized electronics, motion control, frequency converters and servo systems. SEW-Eurodrive currently has a number of different demo equipment to show different product features for customers at industrial fairs. In year 2017, SEW launched its new product family, MOVI-C, in driving electronics. Because of this, a new, complete MOVI-C demo device has been developed in this project to show the features of the product family for customers at industry fairs. Before the project started the engineering department at SEW had already decided how the new demo device would demonstrate the new product family's functions. The project started with the development of a requirement specification for the demo unit. Among the requirements were that the demo unit would fit in a transport solution and clearly show what is being demonstrated. Based on this requirement specification, a concept generation was made. To find as many conceptions as possible, the main problem was broken down into sub-problems, in which multiple sub-solutions attempted to resolve. The sub-solutions were first evaluated individually to eliminate inappropriate sub-solutions. In consultation with the engineering department at SEW, some overall concepts were selected for the continued selection process through a weighted selection matrix. The weighted selection matrix rated the different concepts in a variety of criteria, and through this a whole concept has been chosen. A 3D model was created by the selected overall concept and simpler strength calculations, center of gravity calculations and design calculations were made. Manufacturing documentation in the form of drawings and order lists have been produced. Possible further developments of the resulting overall concept are stiffening angles that would make the structure more stable, as well as investigate the solutions for transport wheels more.

Abstract:
Post Keynesian Economics (PKE) is at a cross road. The academic climate at universities has become more hostile to survival and the mainstream has become more diverse internally. Moreover, a heterodox camp of diverse groups of non-mainstream economists is forming. The debate on the future of PKE has so far focussed on the relation to the mainstream. This paper argues that this is not an important issue for the future of PKE. The debate has overlooked the dialectics between academic hegemony and economic (and social) stability. The important question is, whether PKE offers useful explanations of the ongoing socio-economic transformation. PKE has generated valuable insights but it offers little on important real world phenomena such as supply-side phenomena like the increasing use of ICT and the globalisation of production, social issues like precarisation and the polarization of income distribution or ecological challenges like climate change. It is these issues that will decide the future of PKE. (author´s abstract)

McLeod, Christine. "Changing places resilience in children who move /." University of Sydney, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/1844.

Abstract:
Master of Science/Doctor of Clinical Psychology
Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that over 40% of all Australian children moved at least one time in the census period from 1996 to 2001 (ABS, 2001). The literature varies in the impact that this has on children. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between residential relocation, resilience and the emotional, behavioural and academic adjustment of children 8-12 years of age who had moved. Risk factors as identified in the literature as well as the relative impact of resilience were examined. By studying how adjustment occurs in the context of resilience, possible areas for prevention and intervention may be developed for the large numbers of children who move. Results showed that the sample population was in the normal range in academic and behavioural terms. The sample was found to have repeated more grades than average; however the children did not exhibit significant behavioural or emotional consequences. A number of demographic factors have been indicated in the literature as affecting adjustment after residential relocations, yet these were generally not found to be significantly associated with adjustment for this study population. Socioeconomic status was the only factor other than resilience to have been significantly associated with adjustment. Possibly due to the developmental stage of the participants, only the resilience subscales of interpersonal strength and school functioning were found to be significant in their positive association with adjustment, leading to fewer behavioural and academic problems. While the children in this study have all had the potential stress of moving house, the demographic characteristics of this sample would suggest that they might not have had to encounter multiple life challenges or adversities. This conclusion may help explain the lack of significant effects of demographic factors on the adjustment of the children in this sample. Results highlight the importance of good schooling and that the core business of schools in building and enhancing the intellectual functioning of children, is a vital component in the development of resilience. These findings suggest that different aspects of resilience may be important for different developmental stages and different life stressors. The distinction between cause and effect when examining resilience factors is discussed and it is suggested that outcomes in one context may be treated as influences upon outcomes in another context.

Abstract:
For centuries referential theories of language and meaning have dominated Western philosophy. The idea that noises and scratches become meaningful words and writing by virtue of a mental grasp one has on the referents they are talking about has become deeply entrenched. Starting with Plato, and reinvented by Locke, contemporary theorists continue to reproduce this mental fix requirement (MFR) in their philosophies of language and intentionality-Physicalists, such as Paul and Patricia Churchland are typical. Plato, Locke and the Churchlands all share the view that bits of language reach out to extra-linguistic entities by some act of mind (for Plato the mind grasped referents via the Forms, for Locke Ideas bridged the relation, and the Churchland's, brain states). In each case a self-referential mental act gets language up and running, i.e. mental connections (or representations) to referents do the trick. My question also concerns what makes squiggles and noises meaningful. The question is a nested one-ancillary to it are questions of what makes language work? How do words mean or relate to the world? How do speakers mean certain things and not others? I will approach the question from a contextualist perspective where roles in rule-governed activities are the bottom line, not representations in the mind/brain.

Abstract:
These theoretical assertions are tested through the case study of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This constitutional city has been a citadel of violence towards Blacks throughout its history. The limited efforts to thwart such has lent tacit approval to police violence. Philadelphia was the target of two unprecedented federal suits involving police brutality and the forerunner of innovative techniques to address that concern. However, negligible results of such litigation and the absence of clear guidelines governing police actions led to the unscrupulous manner in which MOVE was forced from their homes in 1978 and again in 1985. It was concluded that the reluctance of the courts to prosecute violators, coupled with the expansion of police discretion, is that lawful repression has taken precedence over human justice.

Khayeat, Ali. "Copy-move forgery detection in digital images." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2017. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/107043/.

Full text
Abstract:
The ready availability of image-editing software makes it important to ensure the authenticity of images. This thesis concerns the detection and localization of cloning, or Copy-Move Forgery (CMF), which is the most common type of image tampering, in which part(s) of the image are copied and pasted back somewhere else in the same image. Post-processing can be used to produce more realistic doctored images and thus can increase the difficulty of detecting forgery. This thesis presents three novel methods for CMF detection, using feature extraction, surface fitting and segmentation. The Dense Scale Invariant Feature Transform (DSIFT) has been improved by using a different method to estimate the canonical orientation of each circular block. The Fitting Function Rotation Invariant Descriptor (FFRID) has been developed by using the least squares method to fit the parameters of a quadratic function on each block curvatures. In the segmentation approach, three different methods were tested: the SLIC superpixels, the Bag of Words Image and the Rolling Guidance filter with the multi-thresholding method. We also developed the Segment Gradient Orientation Histogram (SGOH) to describe the gradient of irregularly shaped blocks (segments). The experimental results illustrate that our proposed algorithms can detect forgery in images containing copy-move objects with different types of transformation (translation, rotation, scaling, distortion and combined transformation). Moreover, the proposed methods are robust to post-processing (i.e. blurring, brightness change, colour reduction, JPEG compression, variations in contrast and added noise) and can detect multiple duplicated objects. In addition, we developed a new method to estimate the similarity threshold for each image by optimizing a cost function based probability distribution. This method can detect CMF better than using a fixed threshold for all the test images, because our proposed method reduces the false positive and the time required to estimate one threshold for different images in the dataset. Finally, we used the hysteresis to decrease the number of false matches and produce the best possible result.

Methods implemented in incorrect classes are common bad smells in object-oriented systems, especially in the case of systems maintained and evolved for years. To tackle this design flaw, we propose a novel approach that recommends Move Method refactorings based on the set of static dependencies established by a method. More specifically, our approach compares the similarity of the dependencies established by a source method with the dependencies established by the methods in possible target classes. We evaluated our approach using systems from a compiled version of the Qualitas Corpus. We report that our approach provides an average precision of 60.63% and an average recall of 81.07%. Such results are, respectively, 129% and 49% better than the results achieved by JDeodorant, a well-known move method recommendation system.

Abstract:
Generating skilled and well-planned behaviours for autonomous agents is a challenging problem common to both computer animation and robotics. This thesis presents a system that uses motion graphs for online motion planning, resulting in skilled driving behaviours for a dynamic model of a car in a constrained environment. The result reproduces skilled driving behaviors. It is a particular challenge to get the cars to produce skidding-into-turn behaviors when approaching sharp corners, which can achieve the fastest speeds around a track. The techniques explored in this thesis are potentially generalizable to other dynamic vehicle behaviours, in computer games or simulations. We demonstrate that a well-formed move tree or motion graph, created from the output of a physics-based simulation can be used to produce realistic steering behaviours on a variety of tracks. We show that a finite-horizon A * search algorithm is well suited to this task. We have produced a number of smooth animations that demonstrate considerable anticipation and agility, be it through acceleration/deceleration around tricky obstacles, or a hard skidding turn into a corner after approaching at high speed. Finally, we offer a number of ways that we could speed up the algorithms for future work in this area.

Abstract:
Today’s societal development is not sustainable. The transportation sector has the potential role to be a tremendous lever for sustainability due to its central position in the societal structure as well as for the current unsustainable trends that occur in this system. Recommendations to public transportation providers were made by highlighting the main existing gaps between the current transportation system and an envisioned future transportation system that could exist in a sustainable society. To highlight these gaps, multiple perspectives were considered. These perspectives were enabled by e.g. User Journey Maps at the individual level and a holistic perspective over the broader urban transport system. The premise is that in order to increase use rates of public transportation, there is a need to better assess and address urban travellers' needs when commuting. For providers to have a strategic, stepwise approach and to be able to bring the public transportation system towards sustainability, the authors recommended that public transportation providers prioritize and implement future actions aligned with the three prioritization questions presented at the strategic level of the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development and by defining a criterion that would emphasize that the users’ needs of importance highlighted in the study are fulfilled.

Heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes are the leading causes of death in the United States. In addition, the prevalence of obesity has significantly increased since the 1970s. In Kansas, 37% of adults are overweight and 24% are obese. These chronic diseases and conditions tend to be prevented by and/or managed with both adequate physical activity and a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. In Kansas 48.5% of adults meet the current recommendations for physical activity set by the American Heart Association, while 20% of adults consume the recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables. Public health officials need to work together to encourage Kansas adults to increase their participation in physical activity and consumption of fruits and vegetables to help prevent future health problems or manage current chronic diseases. To help address these health issues in Kansas, Kansas State University Research and Extension developed the 8-week Kansans Move into Health nutrition and physical activity program, building its framework around the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Using TPB, participants address attitudes and perceived norms as well as perform specific behaviors associated with healthy eating and physical activity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of condensing the 8-week nutrition and physical activity program into four one-hour classes using a pre- and post-survey. Nineteen participants from the Johnson County community signed up to participate with 63% (n=12) completing the program. Results indicated that participants changed their belief that nutritious foods are more expensive (p≤0.05). Furthermore, participants gained knowledge in how to prepare healthy snacks that are quick and easy. All other measures did not change (n=19; p>0.05). Future research evaluating longer program interventions could better assess attitudes and perceived norms associated with healthy behaviors and determine whether the increase in knowledge leads to behavior change.

Cody, Scott M. "If you move their hearts, you can move their minds| California high school principals' leadership focus on adolescent well-being." Thesis, University of Pennsylvania, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10242084.

Abstract:

In discussing his approach to school leadership, a successful high school principal in Los Angeles told me, “If you move their hearts, you can move their minds.” This line speaks to the crucial but often unacknowledged importance of addressing adolescent well-being as a foundational component to school leadership. My qualitative research utilizes case studies of four high schools in California to answer the following questions: What do successful urban high school leaders experience as they focus on adolescent health and well-being? How do they identify the nature of student need and attempt to address it? What perspectives do they hold on structures, programs, and practices that value student health and well-being?

This study seeks to understand how principals consider the health and well-being of their students as core elements of their leadership practice even as they negotiate dwindling school budgets for health services and balance multiple pressures and priorities. In considering this relationship, I argue that leaders must think about how they are creating environments that value students’ health as necessary preconditions for their academic achievement. My analysis uncovers how principals perceive opportunities to support or enact programs, services, and staff that address student well-being in ways that correspond to their broader vision of instructional leadership.

Major findings from my work indicate that these principals from low-income and high-minority schools utilize Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, either explicitly or implicitly, to support student development. By focusing on building relationships as a core value in their work, they are able to recognize the specific needs of students as both adolescents and learners. In doing so, they create systems and structures that support students to find their voices, both as individuals and as members of a collective school community. At the same time, these school leaders also support their teachers in creating curriculum and classroom culture that appreciates both the academic and non-cognitive components of learning, often with the support of community partnerships.

While mainstream educational discourse leaves little room for school principals to focus on the holistic approach of understanding the students on their campuses, I argue that these leaders must consider their students’ layered hierarchy of needs for them to thrive, both academically and socially. While it is certainly possible for schools to be successful without implementing the practices in this study, the major findings in this work create a framework for high school principals to consider in their practice. My research offers insight into innovative leadership practices that can transform the way we prepare school leaders, educate students, and conceptualize the purpose of public education.

Abstract:
History
Ph.D.
This dissertation is a study of how religion is manufactured, policed, imagined, and defended in the modern United States. It traces the history of one group, MOVE, from its inception in the late 1960s to the present in order to illustrate how the category of religion functions in the modern United States. The central premise of the book is that MOVE people believed MOVE was a religion. They believed, nearly from the very beginning of the group, that John Africa was a prophet who communicated on behalf of the divine, that his Teachings were inspired and had supernatural effects on the body, and that MOVE people had a role to play in a cosmic conflict between forces of good (The Law of Mama) and forces of evil (The System). Despite this, MOVE was rarely allowed to be a religion. That is, MOVE’s claim that they had a religion was, more often than not, dismissed. Historians of religion have, in recent years, begun turning their attention to the people with the power to define lived experience as either religious or secular. In MOVE’s case, the people who defined their experience as secular, and not religious, included police officers, judges, journalists, established religious leaders, and politicians. At various points throughout MOVE’s history, these social actors articulated a series of claims about what “true religion” was and why MOVE did not count. The disconnect between how MOVE people viewed themselves and how MOVE was understood by most outside the group points to the central concern of this dissertation.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the proposal that environmentally benign items of free standing furniture may be produced by the use of such well established techniques as training and grafting natural tree growth to shape. The project has been driven by the growing environmental concerns of which mankind has become aware in the late twentieth century, and which are starting to exert such a powerful influence in the twenty first. A broad history of man's use and control of natural tree growth, ranging geographically from Europe to Australia, and in size from hand held agricultural picks to eighteenth century sailing ships, is followed by a brief description of the ways in which the explosive increase in world popuanon. together with the expanding industrial activities of the Western consumer society, are feared to be threatening the stability of the natural environment. The various disasters and catastrophic accidents which have brought this situation to the attention of the general public are briefly surveyed, together with National, International and a range of Industrial responses. As one of the professions most closely concerned with the production of consumer items, the various reactions of the Design Community are similarly examined. In conclusion, the author's proposal for an experimental item of furnitureenvironmentally benign in production, use and disposal - is described and illustrated. A simple free standing three legged stool, the form of both the item itself and that of the jig required to control it's growth, are described and illustrated. The growth of examples of this, carried out on three sites across southern Britain are documented, experimental results reported and discussed. A further range of designs suitable to be produced using this method of controlling and grafting natural growth is proposed, and suggestions made for further experimentation.

Mobile and wearable interfaces try to integrate digital information into our everyday experiences but usually require more attention than is appropriate and often fail to do so in a natural and socially acceptable way. In this thesis we present "ReachMedia," a system for seamlessly providing just-in-time information for everyday objects. The system is built around a wireless wristband that detects objects that the user is interacting with and allows the use of gestures for interaction. Thus enables hands-and-eyes-free interfacing with relevant information using a unique combination of audio output and gestural input, allowing for socially acceptable, on-the-move interaction. We demonstrate that such an interaction is more natural to the user than existing mobile interfaces.

Raffles, Larissa Ellen. "To move or not to move? : decision-making about migration or ageing-in-place for older Orthodox Jewish people from Gateshead." Thesis, Durham University, 2016. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/11685/.

Full text
Abstract:
When older people move from where they live to go elsewhere, if the distances are short it is called relocation, or if the move is over state or national borders, migration. Push factors are dissatisfaction with the present residence, or incapacities; leading to short-distance moves to be near, or to cohabit with, adult children, in order to receive support. These individuals are the ‘old-old’ and ‘oldest-old’, mostly single, poorer, and less healthy. A pull factor is when people want to access a better lifestyle and an increased standard of living. These long-distance migrants tend to be ‘young-old’, healthier, financially secure, newly retired, and married. This thesis explores the migration and relocation of older Orthodox Jews from Gateshead, and studies the priorities and criteria that influence the decision-making process, as well as triggers and barriers to leaving. Being a member of this community, I conducted this research as an insider using constructivist grounded methodology. I conducted 33 in-depth interviews with older people who have migrated or not, including nine with adult children. The migrants ranged from ‘young-old’ to ‘oldest-old’, were married, generally in good health and well-rooted in their community, with extensive social and work attachments in Gateshead. This represents a unique migration in that they are not moving for care, or out of necessity or dissatisfaction, nor are they aiming to increase their standard of living, but to live near and help their children. The decision-making process is both complex and multi-layered. The older people ordered their priorities and considered how their decisions would affect them and their wider network, and taking into account all their resources, select the option that best met everyone’s needs. Decisions were influenced by interdependency with children, neighbours, friends and work colleagues. This interdependency, in which work and volunteering played significant roles, was mediated by reciprocity, the desire not to be a burden, and to remain independent and autonomous. The children facilitated anything that aided these priorities. It was also clear that the demarcation of 65 years as the beginning of an ‘old age’ marked by dependency and infirmity is both arbitrary and inaccurate. Policy makers should recognise the contributions older people can and do make to families and communities. Facilitating and supporting these contributions would improve the health and well-being of older people.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis details the use of a programmable logic device to increase the playing strength of a chess program. The time-consuming task of generating chess moves is relegated to hardware in order to increase the processing speed of the search algorithm. A simpler inter-square connection protocol reduces the number of wires between chess squares, when compared to the DEEP BLUE design. With this interconnection scheme, special chess moves are easily resolved. Furthermore, dynamically programmable arbiters are introduced for optimal move ordering. Arbiter centrality is also shown to improve move ordering, thereby creating smaller search trees. The move generator is designed to allow the integration of crucial move ordering heuristics. With its new hardware move generator, the chess program's playing ability is noticeably improved.

Abstract:
The thesis engages in Choreography and Dance Technique by delineating the concepts and practices that the artistic research project MODUL has generated. A modular method of choreographing is articulated. The MODUL method of choreography starts by making a topographical movement analysis of the context that the work engages with. This analysis results in an identification of the different agencies at work within the context approached. They are considered as Choreographic Agents and as elements of the modular assemblage. The choreographic act then performed consists of a re-articulation of the relations between the different elements. The MODUL method links movement practice and art production as the topographical movement analysis is also applied to, and conceptualised through, the body. In terms of dance technique the MODUL method works with the same topographical movement analysis to explore bodily functionalities as Choreographic Agents. The technique is called Body-Self Attunement and aims at tuning the self, understood as the symbolic body, with the biological body. Body-Self Attunement does not try to unify the symbolic body and the biological body but affirms the gap as generative. The term Generative Choreography is coined in order to emphasise the performative aspect of choreography that is not defined by what it is, but what it does.

Abstract:
There is a growing recognition that to more fully understand the complex dynamics of neighborhoods and communities, we must effectively link the micro- and macro-level dimensions of community processes. As important as collective efficacy at the macro level has been shown to be, literature looking at factors shaping the individual-level experience is relatively scarce. Since the latent community attribute of collective efficacy is largely measured as a function of individual perceptions, understanding what affects the individual is vital, especially in light of within-neighborhood heterogeneity. In this study, I use insights from social disorganization theory, the systemic model to community attachment, and a life-course perspective in order to examine why age is associated with perceptions of collective efficacy. Utilizing Wave 1 L.A.FANS data (N=2,619), results show that age is positively associated with perceptions of collective efficacy, but that this relationship is indirect, with plans to move as the key mediator between age and perceptions of collective efficacy. Surprisingly, other factors linked to social disorganization theory and the systemic model of community attachment are not important for explaining the age relationship. Overall, this study takes the next step at identifying significant predictors of individual perceptions of collective efficacy both from the structural macro-level perspective and the individual micro-level perspective. Additionally, this analysis adds another urban context to the literature by analyzing Los Angeles County, a distinct area from those most looked at in previous studies.

This thesis explores the settlement of the Mississippi Territory through the eyes of John Hailes, a Southern yeoman farmer, from 1813 until his death in 1859. This is a family history. As such, the goal of this paper is to reconstruct John’s life to better understand who he was, why he left South Carolina, how he made a living in Mississippi, and to determine a degree of upward mobility. Local, state, and federal government records provide the general context of this study and accurately track John’s movements and land purchases within the territory. John's frequent movements and the land he bought suggest that he was a herder and relied on hogs and cattle for a living. This contextual biography suggests that John was mobile, that he was sensitive to land policies and market pressures, and that he maintained a yeoman's standard of living throughout his life.

Abstract:
‘Child trafficking’ as a phenomenon requiring a policy and practice response has, in recent years gathered considerable pace. ‘Child trafficking’ is a crosscutting social issue, relevant to policy areas of child protection, child migration, criminal justice, immigration, social policy and human rights. This thesis explores children’s own accounts and lived experiences of ‘child trafficking’, addressing a notable gap in hearing from children directly. The thesis critically engages with the social construction of the ‘trafficked child’ examining how contemporary concepts of childhood shape and inform ‘child trafficking’ policy and practice. How ‘child trafficking’ policy has been constructed politically is examined, in shaping how ‘child trafficking’ is defined in practice. The implications for children experiencing trafficking of a system built on current assumptions about childhood and ‘child trafficking’ are considered. The study explores how children’s experiences of their childhood and ‘child trafficking’ challenge many assumptions underpinning policy and practice. The findings reveal a disjuncture between immigration-driven and prosecution focused ‘child trafficking’ practice and children requiring a welfare and individualised response to their needs. Children needed practitioners to listen to them, believe them and take action upon child protection concerns. A conclusion is drawn that the way in which ‘child trafficking’ policy and practice in England is presently constructed, and experienced, appears not to reflect the lived ‘realties’ of young people in this study. A new approach to ‘child trafficking’ policy and practice is recommended underpinned by a conceptual shift in how we perceive childhood and adolescence. Intended audiences of this study include policy-makers and front-line practitioners including social workers, the police, immigration officers and other services. This qualitative study contributes in developing methods with a hard to access population addressing a difficult subject area, promoting children and young people’s participation in research.
