Abstract:
Several bacterial cultures: Bacillus licheniformis (MO1), B. pumilus (MO2), and B. amyloliquefaciens (MO3), isolated from manure; B. megatherium ZP6 (MO4) isolated from maize rhizosphere; Azotobacter chroococcum Ps1 (MO5) and Pseudomonas fluorescens (MO6), were used to test the influence of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) on seed germination and germination rate of field dodder (Cuscuta campestris Yunk.). Also, to examine the effect of host seeds on germination and initial growth of seedlings of field dodder plants in the dark and under white light, the seeds of four host plants were used (watermelon, red clover, alfalfa and sugar beet). Germinated seeds were counted daily over a ten-day period and the length of seedlings was measured on the final day. The results show that treatments MO3, MO4 and MO6 had inhibitory effects (15%, 65% and 52%, respectively), while treatments MO1, MO2 and MO5 had stimulating effects (3%, 3% and 19%, respectively) on seed germination of field dodder. The data for host seeds show that light was a significant initial factor (83-95%, control 95%) for stimulating seed germination of field dodder plants, apart from host presence (73-79%, control 80%).

Abstract:
No Mow May is a community science initiative popularized in recent years that encourages property owners to limit their lawn mowing practices during the month of May. The goal of No Mow May is to provide early season foraging resources for pollinators that emerge in the spring, especially in urban landscapes when few floral resources are available. We worked with the city council of Appleton, Wisconsin, USA. to allow No Mow May to take place in May 2020. Four hundred and thirty-five property owners registered for No Mow May in Appleton. We measured floral and bee richness and abundance in the yards of a subset of homes (N = 20) located near regularly mowed urban parks (N = 15) at the end of the month. We found that homes that participated in No Mow May had more diverse and abundant flora than regularly mowed green spaces throughout the city. No Mow May homes had three times higher bee richness and five times higher bee abundances than frequently mowed greenspaces. Using generalized linear models, we found that the best predictor of bee richness was the size of the designated unmowed area, and the best predictors of bee abundances were the size of the unmowed area as well as floral richness. While our findings cannot conclusively attribute increases in bee abundances and richness to the No Mow May efforts, our data does show that bee pollinators make use of no mow spaces as key floral resources during early spring in the upper midwestern United States. A post-No Mow May survey revealed that the participants were keen to increase native floral resources in their yards, increase native bee nesting habitat, reduce mowing intensities, and limit herbicide, pesticide, and fertilizer applications to their lawns. The No Mow May initiative educated an engaged community on best practices to improve the conservation of urban pollinators in future years.

Shakourian, Gelareh. "Enhanced De-inking and Recyclability of Laser Printed Paper by Plasma-Assisted Fiber Coating." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/10572.

Full text
Abstract:
Office waste paper is one of the fastest growing segments of the recycled fiber industry. Toner particles are rigid, insoluble and difficult to disperse and detach from fibers. Therefore papers made from recycled office waste having high toner content will contain noticeable ink particles. This work will consider an alternative way of efficient de-inking using plasma polymers which will not affect the fibers chemically or mechanically. The focus is development and characterization of plasma-deposited films to serve as a barrier film for the adhesion of ink toner to the paper fibers and thereby enhance ink lift off from the fibers. The plasma treated paper is coated with fluorocarbon (PFE) and polyethylene glycol (PFE) films, with constant thickness of PFE and varying the thickness of PEG by 1500, from 1500 to 4500, for the three cases studied (PFE greater than PEG, PFE=PEG, PFE less than PEG). Handsheets were made using virgin fibers to eliminate effects of fillers. Once the sheets were coated and printing performed, they were re-pulped and both the slurry and the de-inking surfactant were placed in a flotation cell. Handsheets were made from the collected foam and stock and were scanned for particle count. The results indicated higher ink loss for the cases with increased thickness of polymer films. A handsheet with a 7500 film (PFE = 3000 and PEG = 4500) showed 61% ink removal compared to 38% for handsheets with no film deposited. There was also less material loss for the cases with higher polymer film thickness.

Ferreira, Simone Pereira. "Estudo comparativo entre o modelo dinâmico BRAMS e os modelos estatísticos MOS e MOC." reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/30385.

Full text
Abstract:
Some variables predicted by Weather Numerical Models are frequently influenced by errors. Such errors occurs not only to the assumptions used in the construction of the model equations of physics/dynamics, but also by the topography used. This work compares two statistical post-processing methods Model Outuput Statistics (MOS) and Model Outuput Calibration (MOC) to evaluate which is most suitable to calibrate the model (BRAMS) running in Meteorology and Air Quality Laboratory (LMQA/CEPSRM/UFRGS). These two techniques proved very effective in compensating errors, but first has the disadvantage of requiring a large database and need to modify the equations when changes occur. Other method differs from the first to calculate error of the variable, not its value properly and use recent data to calculate the regression equation. Predictions were generated during 3hs intervals from January 1st, 2008 to December 31, 2009 to MOS training period. MOC training period and testing occurs from May 29 until July 31, 2010. This work goal is a detailed analysis of the two methods in eight locations of Rio Grande do Sul State to temperature, humidity, pressure and preciptation. The results are satisfactory to first of 3 variables. In Vacaria city, MOC follow a wide variation in pressure and reached an improvement by 49.12%, while MOS, achieved 767.97% down. In another case, Santa Maria city, two methods can improve 86 % pressure results.

Abstract:
This essay examines the first chapter in Moa Martinson’s Kvinnor och äppelträd, “Mor badar”. Drawing on the theories of Ahmed and Butler, this analysis considers how the Body, the Gaze, and Space interact to form a new presentation of bathing women, in direct opposition to the one more commonly portrayed by male Swedish primitivists during the same time. Simultaneously, the essay considers, utilizing Grosz’s idea of “body writing”, how the chapter constitutes a method for Martinson as a female writer to claim control over the portrayal of women.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Previous research on Moa Martinson, and Kvinnor och äppelträd in particular, has mainly focused on the aspect of sex and gender.     The overarching purpose of the presented paper is to examine the concept of nature in the aforementioned novel. The text is read as a negotiation, and state of tension, between two differing concepts of nature. On the one hand an anarchist-romanticist view of nature defined by a questioning of the human-nature demarcation, and by its insistence on nature having intrinsic value; on the other hand a capitalist-bourgeois view of nature, drawing a clear line between human and nature, defining nature as an instrument to accomplish other means.     The concept of nature is examined along three main lines. The first chapter examines nature as seen through the eyes of the characters and the narrator. In the second chapter the 'place' as a special spatial category is studied. Lastly, the novel's view on human nature is investigated.     The results are then analyzed according to Kate Soper's tri-partite concept of nature. On all three levels the novel is found to exhibit a tension between two opposing tendencies. On the one hand nature is described as an animated being (related to concepts such as chance, fate, will), on the other hand a naturalistic realist discourse is represented, describing nature in scientific terms. At the same time the novel contains a deconstructive vein, undermining binary oppositions such as the one suggested above.     In the concluding analysis the idea of an authorial voice (used in a Bakthinian sense) is used to examine the conception of nature presented in the novel.  A circular view of life and nature emerges, represented by the symbol of the 'path'. A small-scale communitarian ideal is also exhibited, emphasizing the need for humans to live in harmony with, and in proximity to, nature.

Abstract:
In manufacturing systems, many maintenance tasks require equipment to be stopped in order to safely perform them. However, such tasks cannot last for a long time since the stoppage of machines might directly result in production losses. In this paper, we investigate how long we can perform maintenance during scheduled operations by strategically shutting down equipment without bringing extra production losses to the system. Using the concept of maintenance opportunity window (MOW) we calculate such time intervals with given information of manufacturing systems. MOWs are analytically derived with various system configurations. Simulations are used to deal with uncertainties in production lines such as random machine failures, starvations, blockages, etc. Moreover, the proposed MOW algorithms are demonstrated through numerical case studies.

Abstract:
Abstract Fluid is a major component of cartilaginous tissues. Its transport is primarily governed by the hydraulic permeability coefficient of the tissue. The hydraulic permeability coefficient is important to the understanding of the transport processes of interstitial water and ions [e.g., Gu et al, 1993] and the viscoelastic behavior of the tissue [e.g., Mow et al, 1980; Setton et al, 1993]. However, the hydraulic permeability coefficients of these tissues are extremely low and difficult to quantify precisely. Studies in the literature report on the determination of the hydraulic permeability of these tissues directly by measuring fluid flux corresponding to the applied pressure difference in a permeation experiment [Edwards, 1967; Mansour and Mow, 1976; Mansour and Matsumoto, 1998; Maroudas and Bullough, 1968; McCutchen, 1962] or indirectly by curvefitting experimental data from confined compression or indentation tests using the biphasic theory[e.g., Athanasiou et al, 1991; Best et al, 1994; Drost et al, 1995; Houben et al, 1997, Iatridis et al, 1997; Mak et al, 1987; Mansour and Matsumoto, 1998; Mow et al, 1980; Setton et al, 1993]. Recently, Gu and co-workers (1998) reported that the permeability coefficient of human anulus fibrosus determined directly was one order of magnitude greater than that determined indirectly [e.g. Best et al, 1994, Drost et al, 1995, Houben et al, 1997, Iatridis et al, 1997]. To address this discrepancy, we investigated the hydraulic permeability coefficients of human lumbar anulus fibrosus and bovine articular cartilage using a new technique developed by Gu and co-workers (1998). The hydraulic permeability coefficient of human anulus fibrosus was compared to that of bovine articular cartilage measured under the same testing conditions.

Abstract:
Abstract Confined compression stress relaxation tests with porous platens (Fig 1) have been frequently used for investigating the flow-dependent viscoelastic behavior of biological hydrated soft tissues [Lai et al., 1981; Mow et al., 1980]. From experimental data, the one-dimensional (1D) compression modulus (i.e., the aggregate modulus) at equilibrium and the hydraulic permeability of the tissue can be calculated using the biphasic theory for cartilage developed by Mow et al. (1980). However, the swelling pressure effects associated with fixed charge density (FCD) can not be accounted for directly by the biphasic theory. Thus, in this abstract, we determine the effects of FCD, hence the osmotic pressure, on the confined compression stress-relaxation behavior of cartilage using our mechano-electrochemical theory [Lai et al., 1991]. The objectives of this study are to determine the confined compression stress-relaxation behavior of a charged, hydrated-soft tissue by: 1) delineating the contribution of the swelling pressure to the total stress when the tissue is compressed; 2) determining the deformation, flow, pressure and electric fields in the tissue for the understanding of mechano-electrochemical signal transduction within the tissue.

Abstract:
Abstract We applied a special theory of an incompressible mixture of an elastic solid and an inviscid fluid to experimental data (Iatridis et al., 1995) for axial confined compression of annulus fibrosus in finite deformation. We found that this special theory demands a significantly different nonlinear permeability function than the widely used theory of Kwan et al. (1990) and Holmes and Mow (1990) to achieve a best-fit regression to the surface stress time history.

Abstract:
Overwhelmingly, research indicates that there are thousands of injuries each year related to the use of lawn mowers. Riding mowers have specific injury scenarios such as when a child is run over by the riding lawn mower when it is in reverse with the cutting blades engaged. In conjunction with ANSI B71.1 implemented in 1986, various designs have been employed to attempt to reduce or eliminate this injury pattern. An alternative design has been built which incorporates both mechanical means and human factors methods to accomplish this goal. This paper will outline the existing commercially available designsA as well as the authors’ alternative design by comparing each design feature and its corresponding safety philosophy.

Abstract:
Microstructural cellular finite element (FE) models provide a means of describing tissue micromechanics and cell mechanobiology. For the cartilage, for example, the mechanical environment of chondrocytes has been explored with models such as those from the pioneering work of Guilak and Mow [1]. However, most cellular FE models typically include a single cell. These models do not provide the capacity to explore mechanobiological function and micromechanical effects caused by intercellular interactions. Therefore, it is desirable to develop models that more closely represent cell distribution and shape within the tissue of interest.

Abstract:
Abstract The ubiquitous presence of soft tissue in the human body has provided significant motivation for researchers to model its behavior. Specifically, soft tissue models for cartilage have been extensively developed. The biphasic (Mow et al., 1984) model has provided a foundation for the understanding of cartilage behavior, grounded in a solid-fluid interaction point-of-view. Phenomenological approaches have also been made, borrowing developments from viscoelasticity and applying those models to biomechanics. Woo et al. (1980) discussed the viscoelastic properties of cartilage in the context of a quasi-linear theory.

Abstract:
Abstract We apply a special theory of an incompressible mixture of an elastic solid and an inviscid fluid (Klisch and Lotz, 1998) to experimental data for healthy human annulus fibrosus tested in a stress-relaxation confined compression protocol. The material constants revealed no significant differences due to orientation (i.e., axial vs. radial, n = 16). The aggregate modulus and initial permeability constants were significantly different (n = 32) due to the choice of theory used to fit the data (i.e., that of Klisch and Lotz (1998) vs. that of Holmes and Mow (1990)) and were significantly correlated with initial water content.
