Abstract:
Bamboo can be processed into engineering materials with excellent properties by reasonable processing methods. In this study, the performance of mould-pressed bamboo (MBP) veneer products was examined. The physical mechanical properties and connection properties of MPB were tested, and the application performance of the MPB was analyzed. The results show that MPB has a comprehensive property of high internal bonding and good dimensional stability, and its density and mechanical properties are similar to those of wood dimensional stock. The overall bending strength, bending modulus, and compression strength of MPB were 29.0 MPa, 6.83 GPa, and 15.6 MPa, respectively. While the overall carrying capacity was relatively low, the connection performance of BPM was good. Thus, it can be used as a connector or substructure.

Abstract:
The media play a key role in communicating risk issues and serve as a link between experts and the public. In this study, we explore experts’ perspectives on the role of the media and media content with respect to a mountain pine beetle (MBP; Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins) epidemic in western Canada. We collected data using an internet-based survey of 59 MPB experts in 2009 and 1628 articles from local, regional, and national newspapers from 2000 to 2008. Survey findings show that experts do not have a favourable view of media reporting of MPB. In our media analysis, we found that the media are used effectively by experts to disseminate MPB risk information and to justify a swift response and control measures. Most articles reported information presented to them by government and industry. We conclude that the media played primarily an educational role and gave limited attention to fostering public dialogue on MPB management.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: Androgenic alopecia, known as male pattern baldness (MPB), is a common hair loss disorder among men. MPB has similar risk factors with prostate cancer (PrCa) including advancing age, family history, and sex hormones. Several studies have examined the associations between MPB and PrCa but the evidence remains unclear. We carried out a meta-analysis of epidemiological studies that examined the relationship between patterns of baldness: frontal, vertex, or both and PrCa risk. Methods: A literature search was performed in October 2022 using PubMed and Web of Science databases for epidemiological studies published between 1/1/2000 and 10/31/2022, which examined the above hypothesis. From each eligible study, relevant data were extracted on study design, population, sample size, prevalence of MPB at various ages, and corresponding associations with risks of total and aggressive PrCa. Pooled relative risks (RR) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using the DerSimonian and Laird random-effects models. Heterogeneity across studies was assessed by I2 statistic. Results: A total of 14 studies: 14,573 cases and 132,434 controls/non-cases were included. The prevalence of MPB increased from 5% to 70% with aging and varied across studies. Vertex MPB at ages 40 years or older was associated with a pooled RR of 1.08 (95%CI 1.00-1.17) of total PrCa, but there was no association with frontal MPB. The onset of MBP at younger ages was also associated with RR=1.10 (95% CI 0.93 - 1.29) of PrCa, although results were not statistically significant. Results were similar when data were stratified by clinical features of PrCa, although there was large heterogeneity in the definition of aggressive PrCa across studies. Conclusions: Men with vertex MPB may have modest increased risk of PrCa. However, the majority of studies were conducted in Caucasian men and they did not evaluate effect modifications by genetic variations in androgen metabolism pathway genes or changes in serum levels of androgens. Further, large well-designed prospective cohort studies are needed to better understand the complex relationship between genetic susceptibility, endogenous hormones, MBP and risk of PrCa. Abstract:
The pine engraver (PE), Ipspini (Say), often coexists with the mountain pine beetle (MPB), Dendroctonusponderosae Hopk., in lodgepole pine, Pinuscontorta var. latifolia Engelm. The PE colonizes the upper bole, while the MPB infests the lower bole. We investigated the hypothesis that interspecific interactions between the PE and the MPB within trees can adversely affect MPB progeny production or survival. In lodgepole pine bark attacked by both species, PE and MPB emergence holes had a strong negative interrelationship, suggesting that high numbers of one species resulted in lower numbers of the other. In the laboratory, attacks by PEs on lodgepole pine logs resulted in significantly decreased numbers of MPB progeny, particularly when MPBs and PEs were allowed to attack logs simultaneously. Reductions in MPB progeny were 92.8 and 96.2% when the ratios of attacking beetles were 100 PE: 50 MPB per square metre and 200 PE: 50 MPB per square metre, respectively, compared with that in control logs with 50 MPB per square metre. In an August field experiment, pheromone-induced attack by the PE on trees just attacked by the MPB resulted in a 72.5% reduction in mean MPB progeny production compared with that in MPB-attacked control trees. Possible reasons for the reduced success of MPB when it and the PE coinhabit the same host may be exploitation competition, interference competition, or introduction of fungal competitors deleterious to the MPB. Induced infestation by PEs of MPB-infested trees may have the potential to reduce or control MPB populations.

Abstract:
In order to determine the optimal proportion of magnesium phosphate cement mortar, the influences of ratio of magnesium phosphate cement-based binder (MPB) to sand (MPB/S), effects of fly ash on fluidity and strength development of MPB mortar, and the compatibility between MPB and traditional concrete and shrinkage of MPB mortar were investigated in this paper. The optimal proportion in this test was: setting adjusting agent of 12%, P/M ratio of 1:2(in weight), MPB/S ratio of 1:1 and FA/S ratio of 15%. The results showed that the MPB mortar met the higher early strength requirement of rapid-repair materials, with compressive strength beyond 50MPa and flexural strength more than 9.1MPa at 3 hours, and at later ages no reduction of strength happened. There was a good compatibility between MPB and traditional concrete. The shrinkage of MPB mortar at 28 days was less than 2.89 × 10-4. Therefore MPB is very suitable for rapid repairing of concrete structures.

Abstract:
This study explored the effect of maleinized polybutadiene (MPB) on the mechanical properties of epoxy resins. Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A, an epoxy resin, was modified by incorporating MPB having different molecular weights in order to improve the fracture toughness and peel strength. MPB was mixed with epoxy resin at several concentrations (5, 10, and 15 phr), with the epoxy resin as the major phase and MPB as the minor phase. A comparative study was performed to investigate the influence of MPB on epoxy resins based on their molecular weight difference. Lap shear test results showed that the shear strength of the MPB-modified epoxy resins was superior to that of the neat epoxy resin. At 10 wt% MPB loading, the modified epoxy resin exhibited an 87% enhancement in T-peel strength relative to that of the neat epoxy resin. Moreover, the fracture energy of the modified epoxy system increased proportionally with the amount of MPB in the epoxy matrix. These results indicate that MPB incorporation is a simple and effective method for designing multifunctional epoxy resins, thus facilitating their industrial application in various spheres.

Abstract:
The ever-increasing use of magnetic particle bioconjugates (MPB) in biosensors calls for methods of comprehensive characterization of their interaction with targets. Label-free optical sensors commonly used for studying inter-molecular interactions have limited potential for MPB because of their large size and multi-component non-transparent structure. We present an easy-to-use method that requires only three 20-min express measurements to determine the key parameters for selection of optimal MPB for a biosensor: kinetic and equilibrium characteristics, and a fraction of biomolecules on the MPB surface that are capable of active targeting. The method also provides a prognostic dependence of MPB targeting efficiency upon interaction duration and sample volume. These features are possible due to joining a magnetic lateral flow assay, a highly sensitive sensor for MPB detection by the magnetic particle quantification technique, and a novel mathematical model that explicitly describes the MPB-target interactions and does not comprise parameters to be fitted additionally. The method was demonstrated by experiments on MPB targeting of cardiac troponin I and staphylococcal enterotoxin B. The validation by an independent label-free technique of spectral-correlation interferometry showed good correlation between the results obtained by both methods. The presented method can be applied to other targets for faster development and selection of MPB for affinity sensors, analytical technologies, and realization of novel concepts of MPB-based biosensing in vivo.

Abstract:
More than 300 genetic risk loci have been identified for male pattern baldness (MPB) but little is known about the exact molecular mechanisms through which the associated variants exert their effects on MPB pathophysiology. Here, we aimed at further elucidating the regulatory architecture of the MPB risk locus on chromosome (chr.) 2q35, where we have previously reported a regulatory effect of the MPB lead variant on the expression of WNT10A. A HaploReg database research for regulatory annotations revealed that the association signal at 2q35 maps to a binding site for the transcription factor EBF1, whose gene is located at a second MPB risk locus on chr. 5q33.3. To investigate a potential interaction between EBF1 and WNT10A during MPB development, we performed in vitro luciferase reporter assays as well as expression analyses and immunofluorescence co-stainings in microdissected human hair follicles. Our experiments confirm that EBF1 activates the WNT10A promoter and that the WNT10A/EBF1 interaction is impacted by the allelic expression of the MPB risk allele at 2q35. Expression analyses across different hair cycle phases and immunhistochemical (co)stainings against WNT10A and EBF1 suggest a predominant relevance of EBF1/WNT10A interaction for hair shaft formation during anagen. Based on these findings we suggest a functional mechanism at the 2q35 risk locus for MPB, where an MPB-risk allele associated reduction in WNT10A promoter activation via EBF1 results in a decrease in WNT10A expression that eventually results in anagen shortening, that is frequently observed in MPB affected hair follicles. To our knowledge, this study is the first follow-up study on MPB that proves functional interaction between two MPB risk loci and sheds light on the underlying pathophysiological mechanism at these loci.

Abstract:
Abstract. Satellite remote sensing (RS) is routinely used for the large-scale monitoring of microphytobenthos (MPB) biomass in intertidal mudflats and has greatly improved our knowledge of MPB spatio-temporal variability and its potential drivers. Processes operating on smaller scales however, such as the impact of benthic macrofauna on MPB development, to date remain underinvestigated. In this study, we analysed the influence of wild Crassostrea gigas oyster reefs on MPB biofilm development using multispectral RS. A 30-year time series (1985–2015) combining high-resolution (30 m) Landsat and SPOT data was built in order to explore the relationship between C. gigas reefs and MPB spatial distribution and seasonal dynamics, using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). Emphasis was placed on the analysis of a before–after control-impact (BACI) experiment designed to assess the effect of oyster killing on the surrounding MPB biofilms. Our RS data reveal that the presence of oyster reefs positively affects MPB biofilm development. Analysis of the historical time series first showed the presence of persistent, highly concentrated MPB patches around oyster reefs. This observation was supported by the BACI experiment which showed that killing the oysters (while leaving the physical reef structure, i.e. oyster shells, intact) negatively affected both MPB biofilm biomass and spatial stability around the reef. As such, our results are consistent with the hypothesis of nutrient input as an explanation for the MPB growth-promoting effect of oysters, whereby organic and inorganic matter released through oyster excretion and biodeposition stimulates MPB biomass accumulation. MPB also showed marked seasonal variations in biomass and patch shape, size and degree of aggregation around the oyster reefs. Seasonal variations in biomass, with higher NDVI during spring and autumn, were consistent with those observed on broader scales in other European mudflats. Our study provides the first multi-sensor RS satellite evidence of the promoting and structuring effect of oyster reefs on MPB biofilms.

This is a theoretical and methodological study of the MPB, according to the theoretical assumptions and concepts of Actor-Network Theory (ANT), their possible links with the communication and music studies, specifically with musical genres, thought from the ANT as consisting of disputes, the New MPB is a contemporary controversy of MPB. Following this perspective, it was applied the Cartography of Controversies (CC) as a methodology to track and map the New MPB, identifying their actors and analyzing their actions, statements and opinions provided in the online digital networks, describing their appearance and the opening of black boxes on MPB about the labeling criteria for artists, search for approval in established names, the popular, commercial and artistic autonomy, the musical quality, acceptance and denial of labels and the issue of new in the MPB. From the description of the controversy, a critical account of the New MPB was prepared, describing and analyzing its possible stabilization as socio-technical network, giving the necessary prominence to the main non-human actors of the New MPB and the changes in MPB with the incorporation of internet technical mediation in the independent mode of operation in the New MPB and artistic productions that bring between their aesthetic possibilities the penetrations of indie rock and pop music, beyond the notion of expanded song.

The paper analyzes the role of Popular Brazilian Music (MPB) in protest events in the final period of the Military Regime from 1977 to 1984. At that time, the MPB was present at concerts, rallies, TV, radio and sound trucks, cradling public demonstrations against the regime and electoral campaigns by students , opposition parties, in which stood out the MDB later PMDB, PT and PDT, labor movements, neighborhood movements , by Anistia and the Diretas Já. You can see that many artists like Elis Regina, Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Gonzaguinha, Gilberto Gil, among other already established cast of MPB, attended these events. Our goal is to understand the performances of these artists as political agents, their possible links with the opposition parties and the role of songs in reframing of political values and building a sense of collective belonging in opposition to the Military Regime.

This thesis compares conceptions of popular music, nation and popular layers developed in two periods of the Popular Brazilian Music(MPB): The one in the middles of the 60´s, in which the idea of MPB was built, and the current days, characterized by sonorities originating from the suburbs of big cities, so-called communities for his inhabitants. Leaving from the musical categories of Mário de Andrade created in the decade of 1920, I analyse the context of formation of the MPB like a moment of development of the populário, in which there was proposed an aesthetics that was representing musically Brazil. In 67, while questioning the bases of the popular-national project, the Tropicália provided with an opportunity for another proposal of representation of the country, while joining locals and globals repertoires. Contemplating the changes in conceptions of popular music, nation and popular layers, I contrast the MPB of the 60´s with the most recent production of Chico Buarque, the 2006-year-old Cd Carioca, through his relation with rhythms and segments of the musical Brazilian contemporary scene, specially the hip- hop, the manguebeat and the electronic sounds.

Abstract:
This study aims at analyzing the insertion of a group of Brazilian musicians and composers, collectively known as Nova MPB, in the popular music field, understood here as a power structure. Our purpose is to understand the processes of collective construction of the symbolic positions within this field. The structure of feeling of the Nova MPB group is characterized by both the explicitly and the implicitly principles that guide its formation, which is crystalized in the musical production. Taking for granted that any musical production is a social production, we consider the artists suffer an entanglement as they are inserted in an undergoing power arrangement and as they build relations inside of the group. This entanglement affects their positioning and their compositions. The purpose of this study is to problematize the social processes involved in the musical production of the Nova MPB. Given the new forms of production, distribution, and diffusion proposed by the artists with the help of the new technologies, the Nova MPB, in an autonomous and entrepreneurial way, places itself as the protagonist of a new and independent musical production. A collaborative web is formed as the artists try to find alternatives to the imperatives of the phonographic industry. Although there are a few exceptions, the fact that the artists in general come from an intellectualized middle class and have a similar music style helps the creation of this notion of group. The Nova MPB artists have a peculiar relationship with the Brazilian music: they approach famous and recognized artists, as well as they praise obscure artists and musical movements that the phonographic industry has despised. The new artists intend to rewrite their history by means of the incorporation of long forgotten genres and artists. They approach the already renowned artists and the ascending ones as they organize tributes, produce new versions of their songs, and propose partnerships. The celebration of past moments of the Brazilian popular music history can be interpreted as an implicit principle that compose the structure of feeling of the Nova MPB.

Abstract:
The modernist ideal of building a national identity in Brazil reverberated in the political-ideological context of the 1960s with the advent of televised music festivals, the process of legitimation of MPB acronym before the hearing established an esthetic standard, from a chain institutions in the service of the dominant classes. The building of a made canonical MPB from the second half of the twentieth century seems to result from the historian Eric Hobsbawm called \"invented tradition\" in the sense of superiority of elites, inculcated in other classes, it was thus absorbed by majority. This research aims to observe how the institutions and cultural agents acted in the gentrification process of cutting-edge ideas that guided the MPB, and how, today, the prospect of \'evolution\' of the acronym is understood by agents / institutions the start of this century began to legitimize the new MPB. This research draws thus a small outline abbreviation of modernity of ideas, observing its paradigmatic trajectory as a symbolic expression of national identity.

Abstract:
Participatory Budgeting (PB) is a popular voting method by which a limited budget is divided among a set of projects, based on the preferences of voters over the projects. PB is broadly categorised as divisible PB (if the projects are fractionally implementable) and indivisible PB (if the projects are atomic). Egalitarianism, an important objective in PB, has not received much attention in the context of indivisible PB. This paper addresses this gap through a detailed study of a natural egalitarian rule, Maxmin Participatory Budgeting (MPB), in the context of indivisible PB. Our study is in two parts: (1) computational (2) axiomatic. In the first part, we prove that MPB is computationally hard and give pseudo-polynomial time and polynomial-time algorithms when parameterized by certain well-motivated parameters. We propose an algorithm that achieves for MPB, additive approximation guarantees for restricted spaces of instances and empirically show that our algorithm in fact gives exact optimal solutions on real-world PB datasets. We also establish an upper bound on the approximation ratio achievable for MPB by the family of exhaustive strategy-proof PB algorithms. In the second part, we undertake an axiomatic study of the MPB rule by generalizing known axioms in the literature. Our study leads to the proposal of a new axiom, maximal coverage, which captures fairness aspects. We prove that MPB satisfies maximal coverage.

Abstract:
Mangroves, Avicennia marina, are highly productive coastal ecosystems with capacity to store carbon within plants and in sediments. Micropytobenthos (MPB) in the sediments also fix carbon and play a significant role in carbon burial. However, there is paucity of information on the role of MPB in coastal carbon budget. We quantified the biomass of MPB as an important carbon pool in the mangrove of Al Thakhira, located at the east coast of Qatar. Sediments at different tidal levels namely, supratidal, intertidal, and subtidal were collected and analyzed for grain size, chlorophyll (a), total carbon, and inorganic carbon contents. Results indicated that sand was the dominant species (60%), followed by silt (39%) and clay (1%) at all tidal levels. While the supratidal level had significantly higher silty sand content, silt dominated the intertidal levels. Moreover, chlorophyll (a) was significantly influenced by tidal levels with highest levels in the subtidal level sediments, where mangroves grow extensively. Results also demonstrated that as we move towards the intertidal zone, the total carbon content in sediments gets higher. Finally, chlorophyll (a) and TOC% were positively associated (r=0.643) in all tidal zones. As we move towards the mangrove subtidal growth area, the total carbon content in sediments gets higher. This work recommends that mangrove forests in Qatar be protected by special sanctuaries and law-enforcement to maintain this natural and dynamic blue carbon ecosystem.

Mohr, Michelle, Jennifer Cribbs, Joan Dudney, et al. Inventory of white pine blister rust, fire, and bark beetles in sugar pine at Yosemite National Park. National Park Service, 2025. https://doi.org/10.36967/2308879.

Full text
Abstract:
Invasive white pine blister rust (Cronartium ribicola, WPBR) threatens white pine populations throughout North America. Sugar pine (Pinus lambertiana), for example, has been declining in Sequoia and King Canyon National Parks (SEKI) due to WPBR, as well as other mortality agents, including fire, drought, and mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae, MPB). Whether these declines reflect population trends farther north in Yosemite National Park, however, is largely unknown. To this end, we surveyed 56 plots between June and October, 2023 in Yosemite. To test whether fire impacted WPBR or sugar pine recruitment, 23 plots were established in the Rim Fire footprint. Average extent (% of plots with ? 1 infection) and infection rate (% of all live stems with ? 1 infection) was 48.2% and 3.7%, respectively, though the extent was much lower in the Rim Fire plots (26.1%) compared to the primary plots (63.6%). Our generalized linear mixed models of infection rate suggested that fire and the presence of alternate hosts were important correlates of WPBR. As fire severity increased, WPBR infections declined, suggesting that high severity fire may dampen infection rates. Additionally, MPB was typically found in larger diameter stems, and the extent was higher in primary plots (54.6%) compared to the Rim Fire plots (30.4%). Recent surveys from SEKI show that sugar pine and WPBR infection rates are declining, likely due to complex interactions with drought, MPB, and fire. Comparable infection rates in Yosemite suggest that both sugar pine and WPBR may be following a similar trajectory. Though long-term monitoring is needed to quantify trends, our results underscore that restoration will help ensure the persistence of this ecologically important species.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is intended as a bellwether for the occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in Great Lakes wetlands. In 2020, sediment, surface water, and atmospheric deposition samples were collected from wetland catchments in or near five National Wildlife Refuges (NWRs) in the Great Lakes region: Horicon-WI, Seney-MI, Shiawassee-MI, Ottawa- OH, and Montezuma-NY. Sediment and surface water samples were taken from river, stream, and canal inflows and outflows to and from wetland areas. Atmospheric deposition samples were collected in carboys placed near established rain gauges. These sample sites were chosen as indicators of MP deposition into and out of the region’s wetland systems. MPs were extracted from each sample, enumerated, and categorized by particle morphology and polymer type. Average MP particle abundances in the sediment and surface water samples ranged from 344 to 538 particles kg-1 (dry weight) and 2–68 particles m-3, respectively. Atmospheric MP deposition ranged from 5.8 to 22.6 particles m-2 d-1. Fibers were the most abundant MP particle type found in each sample type (sediment, surface water, and atmospheric deposition), followed by fragments. These results suggest that input and retention of MPs are pervasive in the Great Lakes region and surrounding wetland areas.
