This thesis considers the optimisation of the QoS offered by an MPLS network. The QoS measure used is the expected packet delay which is minimised by switching packets along optimal label switched paths (LSPs). This thesis presents several decentralized, learning-based algorithms for on-line routing of bandwidth guaranteed paths. The presented routing algorithms do not need any a-priori knowledge of traffic demand; they use only their locally observed events and update their routing policy using learning schemes. The employed learning algorithms are either learning automata or the multi-armed bandit algorithms. We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the proposed routing algorithms and prove the convergence of one of them to the user equilibrium. Discrete event simulation results show the merit of

Abstract:
The explosive growth of the Internet has generated interests from researchers around the world. New applications of the Internet, such as video, audio and mission-critical applications, challenge researchers to develop more effective ways to deliver these applications to end users. Multicasting, QoS and MPLS emerge as new technologies and are being developed. The integration of MPLS, multicasting and/or QoS is still an open topic. RFC3353, released in August 2002, gives an overview of IP multicast in an MPLS environment. This thesis first presents RFC3353 in brief and then an extension to RFC

Abstract:
The Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is an advanced technology that enables IP networks to support traffic engineering efficiently. It speeds up packet forwarding by combining layer 3 routing with layer 2 switching. In MPLS, a label in the packet is used for making forwarding decisions and a path is pre-established to switch labeled packets at layer 2. Unfortunately, MPLS was originally designed for unicast IP traffic and there is as yet no complete definition for the support of multicast IP traffic. In this thesis, a new mechanism for MPLS to support IP multicast traffic is presen

In this thesis, we study the association of Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) and IntServ to try to overcome the scalability problem. The goal is to provide Quality of Service (QoS) in an efficient and scalable manner in the Internet through enable Label Switching Routers (LSRs) to be able to identify the appropriate reservation state for the aggregated IntServ flows based on the corresponding label. IntServ data flows are aggregated and mapped to one data flow in th

Abstract:
Recovery from network failures is a very important and challenging requirement for current Internet service providers. Real-time applications and other mission-critical tasks require networks to respond to network faults expeditiously in order to not degrade the required quality. In IP networks, failures are detected and handled through the convergence of network topology (topology change reflected in all routers' routing information bases). This recovery mechanism, however, has an obvious disadvantage in that it reacts to network faults very slowly, because it may take a long time for

The network management system cannot prevent any network failure in advance and diagnose failures automatically. To the users who are using various multimedia services, the traditional
