Abstract:
Experiments were conducted under laboratory conditions for determination of oxygen consumption of advanced fry, fingerlings and advanced fingerlings of Indian major carps, catla Catla catla (Hamilton, 1822); rohu Labeo rohita (Hamilton, 1822); and mrigal Cirrhinus mrigala (Hamilton, 1822) in freshwater medium of total alkalinity varying between 150-154 mg l-1, total hardness 130-140 mg l-1, pH 7.5-8.0, carbon dioxide 5.6-12.0 mg l-1 and temperature 31-35oC. Experiments were conducted in acrylic respirometers designed and developed for this purpose. The oxygen consumption values for advanced fry, fingerlings and advanced fingerlings of catla were 634±9, 565±27 and 516±28; rohu 549±26, 459±41 and 374±38 and mrigal 532±24, 449±28 and 343±30 mg kg body wt-1 h-1 respectively. In all stages, oxygen consumption values of catla varied significantly (p<0.05) from rohu and mrigal, whereas no significant differences were noticed between rohu and mrigal. Oxygen consumption was found to be more in all the three developmental stages of catla compared to corresponding stages of rohu and mrigal. In all the fishes, oxygen consumption was found to be higher in advanced fry stage than fingerling and advanced fingerling stages. The lower critical tolerance limits of oxygen in water for survival of advanced fingerlings of catla, rohu and mrigal were found to be 0.4, 0.32 and 0.32 mg l-1 respectively.

Abstract:
An experiment on polyculture of mahseer with Indian major carps at same stocking density was carried out for a period of 10 months from February 1 to December 1, 2004 in six experimental ponds. There were three treatments with two replicates each. Treatment 1 was designed with catla (Catla catla), rohu (Labeo rohita) and mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala), treatment 2 with catla (Catla catla), rohu (Labeo rohita) and mahseer (Tor putitora) while treatment 3 with catla (Catla catla), rohu (Labeo rohita), mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala) and mahseer (Tor putitora). Mahseer of the treatment 2 was introduced instead of mrigal of treatment 1 and 50% of mrigal was replaced with mahseer in treatment 3. The stocking density in all the treatments was 30 fish/decimal (7500 fish/ha). The feeds were supplied at the rate of 3-7% of the body weight of fish. The gross and net productions recorded were 5362.78 and 5188.64, 5431.42 and 5262.32, 5357.11 and 5528.74 kg/ha/yr in treatments 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Though there was no significant difference (p>0.05) among the three treatments using ANOVA but the production in treatment-3 was slightly higher than treatments 1 and treatment 2. However, there was no negative effect of mahseer on the growth and production of Indian major carps. So, it can be concluded that polyculture of mahseer with Indian major carps (catla, rohu and mrigal) can be done in ponds.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/pa.v18i2.18194 Progress. Abstract:

Abstract:
One major challenge in Asian aquaculture is the limited availability of carp fries. In order to establish out of season supply of fries, knowledge about the pineal melatonin clock and calendar function, and its influence on the reproductive system, is needed. Three experiments were carried out to examine pineal melatonin dynamics of mrigal carp (Cirrhinus mrigala), under natural outdoor, and manipulated photoperiods. Plasma melatonin profile of the mrigal carp kept under natural outdoor photoperiod reached a peak early in the dark phase, and then showed a tendency of falling plasma melatonin levels until daytime levels were reached at first light. The second experiment intended to induce production of melatonin at different times during the light phase, and gave production of melatonin only in late afternoon. This indicates a refractory period of the pineal gland during daytime, and that production of melatonin might be controlled by a circadian clock. In the third experiment, animals were exposed to continuous darkness. The resulting plasma melatonin profile was in accordance with subjective darkness and light, with a peak late in the dark phase. This further supports the assumption that a circadian clock controls pineal melatonin production and secretion in the mrigal carp.

Μερτζιάνη, Βασιλική. "Σχεδιασμός και ανάπτυξη νέων συνθετικών αναλόγων του χ-κωνοπεπτιδίου MrIA." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10889/7642.

Full text
Abstract:
Σαν αντιδραστήρια σύζευξης χρησιμοποιήθηκαν α) DIC/HOBt, β) TBTU/DIEA/HOBt, γ) ΗBTU/DIEA/HOBt, δ) HATU/DIEA.
The χ-conopeptide MrIA isolated from the venom of the cone snail Conus Marmoreus, is a 13-residue peptide with two disulfide bonds forming pairs Cys1-Cys4 and Cys2-Cys3. This conotoxin targets selectively the norepinephrine transporter (NET) and is a potent analgesic. The pharmacophore group consists of an inverse γ-turn formed by the first loop Cys2-Cys3 and the residues located between them. The amidated C-terminal derivative bearing the replacement of Asn1 by pGlu led to the potent drug against neuropathetic pain, Xen2174. However, not much is known about the N-terminal region of χ-MrIA. Studies have shown that Val3 has an important structural role, as opposed to the first two amino acids of the peptide sequence. The aim of this research is the design and synthesis of analogs of χ-MrIA-NH2 with substitutions at residues Asn1, Gly2, Val3, Gly6 as well as Cys4 and Cys13 of the peptide sequence and the comparison of these synthetic methods. These analogues were synthesized by solid peptide synthesis, using the Fmoc/tBu methodology. Sieber Amide resin and Rink Amide MBHA resin were used as solid support and a) DIC/HOBt, b) TBTU/DIEA/HOBt, c) TBTU/DIEA/HOBt, d) HATU/DIEA as coupling reagents. The formation of disulfide bonds was achieved in two steps by oxidation with DMSO and / or oxidation by iodine. We concluded that the preferred method for this peptide synthesis is Sieber Amide as solid support and uronic derivatives as coupling reagents, while for the formation of disulfide bonds, the oxidation with iodine. Some of these analogs are studied by NMR spectroscopy for structure determination.

Abstract:
This chapter reflects on the revolutionary politics of Sudhir Mishra's Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi (A Thousand Dreams Like These, 2003). Dismissed by audiences on its release, it has grown to become one of the best-reviewed Indian films of its time. Set against the backdrop of the radical Naxalite movement in 1970s India, Mishra's evocative film is a rare example of contemporary political cinema influenced by the work of Shyam Benegal and Mrinal Sen. The chapter discusses a range of areas, including the origins and evolution of political cinema, with a particular focus on Bengali director Mrinal Sen. It also considers the positioning of the film within broader Naxalite cinema; an analysis of director Sudhir Mishra's career; and key ideologies contested amongst the central characters.

Abstract:
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has developed three related digital libraries providing access to topical and georeferenced information for coastal and marine science: the Marine Realms Information Bank (MRIB) and its two offshoots, the Monterey Bay Science Digital Library and Coastal Change Hazards Digital Library. These three members of the MRIB family run on the same software and share a common database, but they employ different user interfaces targeting different audiences. This chapter reviews (1) distributed geolibraries, the conceptual foundation for MRIB, (2) the modular software of MRIB, permitting the rapid development of customized user interfaces, and (3) the Electronic Index Card (EIC) Creation Utility, encouraging users to contribute new metadata records to the MRIB database. The accompanying discussion addresses several challenges facing digital library developers: providing for scalability in the system; ensuring interoperability with other systems; and meeting the demands of characterizing information while facilitating its search and retrieval.

Abstract:
Reliability-based Design Optimization problems have been solved by two well-known methods: Reliability Index Approach (RIA) and Performance Measure Approach (PMA). RIA generates first-order approximate probabilistic constraints using the measures of reliability indices. For infeasible design points, the traditional RIA method suffers from inaccurate evaluation of the reliability index. To overcome this problem, the Modified Reliability Index Approach (MRIA) has been proposed. The MRIA provides the accurate solution of the reliability index but also inherits some inefficiency characteristics from the Most Probable Failure Point (MPFP) search when nonlinear constraints are involved. In this paper, the benchmark examples have been utilized to examine the efficiency and stability of both PMA and MRIA. In our study, we found that the MRIA is capable of obtaining the correct optimal solutions regardless of the locations of design points but the PMA is much efficient in the inverse reliability analysis. To take advantages of the strengths of both methods, a Hybrid Reliability Approach (HRA) is proposed. The HRA uses a selection factor that can determine which method to use during optimization iterations. Numerical examples from the proposed method are presented and compared with the MRIA and the PMA.

Abstract:
Reliability-Based Design Optimization (RBDO) algorithms have been developed to solve design optimization problems with existence of uncertainties. Traditionally, the original random design space is transformed to the standard normal design space, where the reliability index can be measured in a standardized unit. In the standard normal design space, the Modified Reliability Index Approach (MRIA) measured the minimum distance from the design point to the failure region to represent the reliability index; on the other hand, the Performance Measure Approach (PMA) performed inverse reliability analysis to evaluate the target function performance in a distance of reliability index away from the design point. MRIA was able to provide stable and accurate reliability analysis while PMA showed greater efficiency and was widely used in various engineering applications. However, the existing methods cannot properly perform reliability analysis in the standard normal design space if the transformation to the standard normal space does not exist or is difficult to determine. To this end, a new algorithm, Ensemble of Gaussian Reliability Analyses (EoGRA), was developed to estimate the failure probability using Gaussian-based Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) in the original design space. The probabilistic constraints were formulated based on each kernel reliability analysis for the optimization processes. This paper proposed an efficient way to estimate the constraint gradient and linearly approximate the probabilistic constraints with fewer function evaluations. Some numerical examples with various random distributions are studied to investigate the numerical performances of the proposed method. The results showed EoGRA is capable of finding correct solutions in some problems that cannot be solved by traditional methods.

Abstract:
Alexander Razborov (1985) developed the approximation method to obtain lower bounds on the size of monotone circuits deciding if a graph contains a clique. Given a "small" circuit, this technique consists in finding a monotone Boolean function which approximates the circuit in a distribution of interest, but makes computation errors in that same distribution. To prove that such a function is indeed a good approximation, Razborov used the sunflower lemma of Erd\H{o}s and Rado (1960). This technique was improved by Alon and Boppana (1987) to show lower bounds for a larger class of monotone computational problems. In that same work, the authors also improved the result of Razborov for the clique problem, using a relaxed variant of sunflowers. More recently, Rossman (2010) developed another variant of sunflowers, now called "robust sunflowers", to obtain lower bounds for the clique problem in random graphs. In the following years, the concept of robust sunflowers found applications in many areas of computational complexity, such as DNF sparsification, randomness extractors and lifting theorems. Even more recent was the breakthrough result of Alweiss, Lovett, Wu and Zhang (2020), which improved Rossman's bound on the size of hypergraphs without robust sunflowers. This result was employed to obtain a significant progress on the sunflower conjecture. In this work, we will show how the recent progress in sunflower theorems can be applied to improve monotone circuit lower bounds. In particular, we will show the best monotone circuit lower bound obtained up to now, breaking a 20-year old record of Harnik and Raz (2000). We will also improve the lower bound of Alon and Boppana for the clique function in a slightly more restricted range of clique sizes. Our exposition is self-contained. These results were obtained in a collaboration with Benjamin Rossman and Mrinal Kumar.
