Abstract:
In order to understand how mobile instant messaging services can fit into the usersâ?? current communication behavior, Ericsson Research performed a qualitative user study in Sweden in May 2007. The results showed that the respondents were positive towards (free of charge) mobile MSN Messenger and perceived it as an ex¬tension of the computer-based version that could be used anywhere. However, although MSN Messenger on the com¬puter definitely was considered as a â??must-haveâ?? application, the mobile version was only perceived as a â??nice-to-haveâ?? application and a complement to text mes¬saging (SMS). Almost one year later, in April 2008, Ericsson Research performed a short qualita¬tive follow-up study with the same set of respondents to un¬derstand if and how the mobile MSN Messenger usage had changed. The results actually revealed that none of the re¬spondents used mobile MSN Messenger anymore as the application no longer was free of charge. On a general level, the study highlights important considera¬tions when intro¬ducing computer-based concepts and Internet services in a mo¬bile environment.

Abstract:
This article charts to what extent Moroccan-Dutch young people (12-18 years old) negotiate the affordances of Internet platforms to engage in multi-layered gender identity constructions. I disentangle how the informants creatively make do with the affordances of online discussion forums, MSN Messenger and social networking sites to come to terms with contradictory parental, religious and youth-cultural gender norms. Gender is mobilized as the key analytical category, but intersecting age-specific, religious, migration and youth-cultural power relations are also taken into consideration. The analysis is grounded in quantitative survey data of 344 Moroccan-Dutch students, in-depth interviews with 43 Moroccan-Dutch young people as well as participatory-observations conducted on online discussion forums, MSN Messenger and online social networking sites. The article draws on fieldwork carried out in the context of the Utrecht University research project Wired Up: Digital Media as Innovative Socialization Practices for Migrant Youth.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The development of the Internet has set up a brand new text form, the so-called digital conversations. With computer programmes like MSN Messenger, it is possible to communicate electronically with friends and relatives. These chat conversations contain both oral and literate characteristics; in this sense, the digital texts represent a kind of hybrid language form. To determine the position of the digital texts amongst their oral and written counterparts, it is necessary to create an overview of the stylistic relations between these three contemporary genres. Within the current study, I have compared the usage of the Dutch language within MSN-conversations, e-mails, and transcribed telephone conversations on the basis of several linguistic-stylistic dimensions. It turned out that there were eight of these components on which significant stylistic differences exist between the three modes. An important finding is that e-mails have an informational structure, in contrast to the telephone conversations, that are characterized by a highly involved style; within the digital conversations these two styles are mixed. On two other dimensions, the MSN-conversations distinguish themselves from both the written and oral modes by an increased use of popular or minimising expressions and time references.

Abstract:
Over the last fifteen years, in every Arabic-speaking country, young Arabic speakers have begun to write their spoken language in electronic media, such as Facebook, MSN Messenger, and so on. The new way of writing in social media is a radical deviation from the traditional norm of writing the classical language—as well as what is commonly referred to as Modern Standard Arabic. This study is presenting this phenomenon in the Levant— Jordan, Lebanon, and Israel/Palestine.

In order to reach our goal, we analyzed the software MSN Messenger in regards to its use in the business administration area and by an interpersonal communication group. For these studies we used theories that emphasize the aspects of face/without face interaction, the importance of form for the groups which were analyzed. We tried to map the history of science and technology development in the state of Goiás and the effort of the government to fight the digital exclusion. However, we found members of the society who are highly qualified, therefore making use of the information technologies in their daily life, this enabled us to get to know the inner aspects of each group, as well as their specific characteristics. The application of theories was done through the analysis of interviews and dialogues which furnished us the structure and application of the groups and also the influence of the MSN Messenger over the sociability forms of their members.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the practices and uses of the Internet and of Windows Live Messenger. It charts out different uses of the Internet and WLM among young people, and analyses the way they are adopted, at a time when the individual is experimenting with social and cultural identities. It deals with the specificities of WLM, and the types of sociability associated with it. The results of the study show that practices linked to the objects studied evolve in some areas, while remaining stable in others. The thesis seeks to establish the key traits which go to make up, socially and technically « young people’s culture », and lays out the different criteria specific to the propagation and adoption of a technical artifact by young people. Understanding and analyzing the social uses of WLM allows us to identify the relational context surrounding its insertion and the social and cultural evolutions implied by associated practices. For this reason, the study is based on a corpus composed of two empirical data-sets, recorded three years apart, involving middle-school, high-school and university students from the Côte d’Or region of Burgundy. From a theoretical viewpoint, the study is based on user sociology and approaches the Internet and WLM as social and technical artifacts. This perspective questions the concepts of digital culture, of digital and social divides, of social use and of social relations. A final part of the thesis applies the findings to the development of ICT in Burgundy and in rural regions, in the form of a set of guidelines. A series of three interviews were conducted with local politicians elected to the French senate, in order to establish the vision of political leaders both on local and national levels, concerning the role and the issues surrounding ICT from the point of view of urban development, and their implications, in terms of social relations, for maintaining social cohesion

Abstract:

It is very probable that VoIP will soon replace the ordinary telephone. Beside all advantages of the digital voice-connection it is linked to the danger of spam on the telephone. A lot of approaches have been developed to solve the problem of VoIP spam. Because some of these solutions are based on access to personal information of its users, a broad discussion about the best and most ethical approach has started.

This thesis analyzes the users’ point of view towards the VoIP spam problem and the extent of users’ willingness to offer private information in order to avoid VoIP spam. It presents results from a qualitative and a quantitative research as well as approaches for a most realistic- and most promising VoIP solution. These new approaches are based on the results of the research.

The main points of the results showed that users were not willing to offer private information to companies and that they were not willing to pay any amount of money for VoIP spam solutions. Users held governmental organisations and telephone operators responsible for finding a solution against VoIP spam.

94
Emerging internet technology is the major reason to make the predominantly communicative model change in society. It is presently innovative and applicatory to affect the change of society, even if, arousing or annihilating the built-in power and class. From now on, MSN Messenger, which is an instant messenger of internet, giving an alteration to natural connection and making convenient. However something comes from behind step by step, such as risks, inequity and exploitation. After people are digital connected with each other by internet, we are not sure if that relative situation is to alienation and dissimilation in other side, or appearing a new balanced network society. It is worthy for us to explore. This study is based on MSN Messenger to do research. Issues focus on the social construction of reality and the analysis of power. We will aim to find the flowing power relation and performing way under the communication platform. At first, the study practices in-depth interview to survey Instant Messenger user’s motivation, and understand structural factors how MSN Messenger to be a major internet communicative technology at present. Subsequently, this study treats and retraces how MSN Messenger users exercise their cyberpower in the inherent weight (What is difficult to change-- Structures such as class, patriarchy, hierarchy). This study is belong to constructional futures research, the major research method is Causal Layered Analysis (CLA), a methodology of futurology, which we can watch and read all different situations and clues by participant research. Using of CLA method that we understand underlying change processes and culture’s deep assumption, and furthermore we are able to find out principal direction and tendency influencing future development. In the later period, this study adopts the Ethnographic Futures Research (EFR) in qualitative inquiry to elicit scenarios. Drawing support from sociocultural leaders who guide us to expand our view on the question, and they increase social options exactly and properly. Through EFR scenarios, we shape four creative future images. They are: (1) the cybersociety of perfectly individual liberty; (2) the cybersociety of individualism and diversification; (3) the cybersociety of alienation and dissimilation; (4) the transparent and surveillance cybersociety. Finally, we try to make reflective thinking about possible implications of optimistic or pessimistic visions at collective desire. By way of positive mindset, the overriding purpose of this study is to maintain or improve human well-being and partnership preferable futures of the cybersociety.
