This chapter presents data center operations management by giving four case studies of power distribution systems (PDS) of data centers (Tier I, Tier II, Tier III, and Tier IV). The four topologies of PDS have defined by the design of single points of failure and redundant equipment and systems. The concepts of Mean Time between Failures (MTBF) and Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) apply during PDS design for reduced system downtime. Moreover, MTBF and MTTR use for estimating system availability of each Tier classification. Human factors consider as critical part of data center operations that need to quantify and qualify on knowledge and skills such as certified levels. For sustainable data center operations, the new software for data center operations called Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) has deployed for monitoring and controlling entire system operations that interact among system of systems and human interfaces by deployed condition-based maintenance (CBM) as preventive and predictive conditions. Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays an increasingly important role for the implementation and failure-free operation of Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS). Recent market studies show that investment in AI-enhanced maintenance is increasing as one of the most important use cases of Industry 4.0. AI systems enable the improvement of various Key Performance Indicators (KPI), ultimately leading to a reduction in costs and optimizing plant management in smart factories. At the same time, manufacturing enterprises in diverse sectors have very high expectations from any kind of AI solution comparing to conventional solutions. Today manufacturing enterprises use only a quarter of their data and therefore leave an enormous, untapped potential. The use of Text Mining (TM) realizes the untapped value of existing unstructured or semi-structured textual data. This paper presents a transferable and scalable architecture for a cognitive maintenance system of a human-centered assistance system that enables holistic sensing of the environment by using physical and virtual sensors. By focusing on generalizability, scalability, adaptability, reliability, and user acceptance, a novel architecture for cognitive maintenance system is proposed. The so called ARCHIE, Architecture for a Cognitive Maintenance System, addresses common challenges in the application of AI systems in the industrial environment. Human-centered cognitive systems aim to automate manufacturing processes and assist workers in their cognitive tasks. This can be achieved by using the untapped potential of combining unstructured and structured data in order to extract hidden knowledge. ARCHIE aims at realizing an AI-enhanced approach for a human-centered assistance system. ARCHIE incorporates physical and virtual sensors that capture machine states, parameters, human knowledge, and skills to optimize relevant KPIs. This includes a reduction in documentation time, Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) and Mean Failure Detection Time (MFDT), as well as an increase in uptime, leading ultimately to an improved Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE). These improvements are enabled by the combined use of AI in the form of TM, Federated Learning and Knowledge Graphs. In the presented use-case from the automotive industry, a reduction in MFDT below 60min by 97.3% and an increase in OEE by 5.3% was achieved. In the Semiconductor industry, the partial application of ARCHIE allows the querying of competence distributions based on a given maintenance task, enabling automated allocation of maintenance technicians and trend analyses. Generalizability, scalability, adaptability, reliability, and user acceptance were also evaluated in the use cases presented.

The purpose of this research is to propose three reliability models (configurations) with standby units and to study the optimum configuration between configurations analytically and numerically. The chapter considered the need for 60 MW generators in three different configurations. Configuration 1 has four 15 MW primary units, two 15 MW cold standby units and one 30 MW cold standby unit; Configuration 2 has three 20 MW primary units, three 20 cold standby units; Configuration 3 has two 30 MW primary units and three 30 MW cold standby units. Some reliability features of series–parallel systems under minor and complete failure were studied and contrasted by the current. Failure and repair time of all units is assumed to be exponentially distributed. Explanatory expressions for system characteristics such as system availability, mean time to failure (MTTF), profit function and cost benefits for all configurations have been obtained and validated by performing numerical experiments. Analysis of the effect of different system parameters on the function of profit and availability has been carried out. Analytical comparisons presented in terms of availability, mean time to failure, profit function and cost benefits have shown that configuration 3 is the optimal configuration. This is supported by numerical examples in contrast to some studies where the optimal configuration of the system is not uniform as it depends on some system parameters. Graphs and sensitivity analysis presented reveal the analytical results and accomplish that Configuration 3 is the optimal in terms of design, reliability physiognomies such as availability of the system, mean time to failure, profit and cost benefit. The study is beneficial to engineers, system designers, reliability personnel, maintenance managers, etc.

Whatever their particular causes, environmental problems all share one fundamental trait: with rare exceptions they are unintended, unforeseen, and sometimes ironic side effects of actions arising from other intentions. We intend one thing and sooner or later get something very different. We intended merely to be prosperous and healthy but have inadvertently triggered a mass extinction of other species, spread pollution throughout the world, and triggered climatic change—all of which undermines our prosperity and health. Environmental problems, then, are mostly the result of a miscalibration between human intentions and ecological results, which is to say that they are a kind of design failure. The possibility that ecological problems are design failures is perhaps bad news because it may signal inherent flaws in our perceptual and mental abilities. On the other hand, it may be good news. If our problems are, to a great extent, the result of design failures, the obvious solution is better design, by which I mean a closer fit between human intentions and the ecological systems where the results of our intentions are ultimately played out. The perennial problem of human ecology is how different cultures provision themselves with food, shelter, energy, and the means of livelihood by extracting energy and materials from their surroundings (Smil 1994). Ecological design describes the ensemble of technologies and strategies by which societies use the natural world to construct culture and meet their needs. Because the natural world is continually modified by human actions, culture and ecology are shifting parts of an equation that can never be solved. Nor can there be one correct design strategy. Hunter-gatherers lived on current solar income. Feudal barons extracted wealth from sunlight by exploiting serfs who farmed the land. We provision ourselves by mining ancient sunlight stored as fossil fuels. The choice is not whether or not human societies have a design strategy, but whether that strategy works ecologically and can be sustained within the regenerative capacity of the particular ecosystem. The problem of ecological design has become more difficult as the human population has grown and technology has multiplied. It is now the overriding problem of our time, affecting virtually all other issues on the human agenda.

Four Textron Lycoming TF40B marine gas turbine engines are used to power the U.S. Navy’s Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) vehicle. This is the first hovercraft of this configuration to be put in service for the Navy. Operation and test of the first production craft revealed deficiencies and less than desirable reliability, but confirmed the validity of its design and ability to perform the mission.
