TSPO est une petite protéine membranaire translocatrice, ubiquitaire, composée de cinq hélices-α transmembranaires. Chez les mammifères, elle est principalement localisée dans la membrane externe des mitochondries, où elle jouerait un rôle dans le transport du cholestérol et la voie de synthèse des stéroïdes.
