Abstract:
In recent years, the veracity of the tradition of the martyrdom of the apostles Peter and Paul has been disputed; recently, Brent Donald Shaw denied the historicity of the persecution of Christians. In this article, the author analyzes the texts of Tacitus and Suetonius as well as other texts omitted by Shaw and demonstrates the inconsistency of the hypotheses put forward by negationist scholars (Zwierlein; Shaw) from a theoretical and historical point of view.

Abstract:
This essay carefully examines the debate between Hegel and Wilhelm von Humboldt about the meaning of the Bhagavad Gîtâ, and more specifically about several verses in Gîtâ 6 regarding the radical emptying and purification of the mind. My aim is to propose a new and wider conversation, not possible in Hegel’s time but necessary in ours, between European scholars and peer Indian intellectuals in traditions familiar with the Gîtâ for centuries before any European knew of it at all. To exemplify this new work, I attend to the reading of the same Gîtâ 6 passage by the famed philosopher and theologian Madhusûdana Sarasvatî (ca. 1540–1640). In this way, the European inquiry into the status of Indian thought and religion ceases to be an exclusively European endeavor, becoming instead a beneficial and mutually corrective crosscultural and interreligious conversation about texts and history, philosophy and theology.

Levin, Joshua. "Much Ado About Nothing: British Non-Intervention During The American Civil War." Thesis, Department of History, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/7988.

Full text
Abstract:
During the American Civil War the Federals and Confederates believed that Britain was likely to intervene. This belief is pervasive in current historiography, which argues that Britain was constantly on the threshold of interfering in the American conflict. Taking a longer view of the Anglo-American diplomatic relationship, as well as the relevance of contextual British economic, social, political and foreign policy interests and limitations, this thesis argues that Britain was never going to abandon neutrality. Drawing on the personal papers and official correspondence of diplomats and politicians, it becomes clear that occasionally aggressive transatlantic rhetoric was a negotiating strategy for two nations concerned with maintaining peace at all costs.

Abstract:
This report estimates the direct and indirect macroeconomic impact of the Brexit leave vote on the Caribbean during 2016 and 2017 in terms of economic growth, exports, tourism, and remittances. We consider six Caribbean countries (denominated as C6): The Bahamas, Barbados and Jamaica (tourism-based), and Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago (commodity-based). We find the estimated quantitative impact of Brexit(v) to be very small if not negligible.

Abstract:
Much has been written recently about the problems for emerging markets that might result from a mismatch between foreign-currency denominated liabilities and assets (or income flows) denominated in local currency. In particular, several models, developed in the aftermath of financial crises of the late 1990s, suggest that the expansion in the "peso" value of "dollar" liabilities resulting from a devaluation could, via a net worth effect, offset the expansionary competitiveness effect. Assessing which effect dominates is ultimately an empirical matter. In this vein, this paper constructs a new database with accounting information (including the currency composition of liabilities) for over 450 non-financial firms in five Latin American countries. The authors estimate, at the firm level, the reduced-form effect on investment of holding foreign-currency-denominated debt during an exchange-rate realignment. It is consistently found that, contrary to the predicted sign of the net-worth effect, firms holding more dollar debt do not invest less than their counterparts in the aftermath of a depreciation. The paper shows that this result is due to firms matching the currency denomination of their liabilities with the exchange-rate sensitivity of their profits. Because of this matching, the negative balance-sheet effects of a depreciation on firms holding dollar debt are offset by the larger competitiveness gains of these firms.

This issue addresses the South-South cooperation topic and argues that, rather than being much ado about nothing, it is actually tangible and about more than meets the eye, reflecting new avenues of delivery, innovative ways of thinking, and ongoing economic realignment. It features contributions about: The role of institutions in the provision of public goods and their implications for sustainable development; SSC, and its increasing contribution to international dialogue; The rising profile and implications of SSC between LAC and China, Japan, and Korea; The role of civil society organizations (CSOs) in defining, implementing, and evaluating SSC interventions in the region; Comparisons between SSC providers and traditional donors, including a greater focus on the private sector; and Case studies.
