Attending to nonhumans--the innumerable trees, rats, cows, copper, smog, clouds, bricks, oil, shade, doors, speed bumps, and others who must be omitted for the requisite brevity of an 'abstract'--orients the ecological problem per our everyday epistemology: how we relate with the world. In this domain, architecture, fundamentally an environmental medium, may operate as a fulcrum, shifting how we situate ourselves within the world.Yet, before we can design in such a way, we must first learn to witness the agency of nonhumans, a shift which demands expanded practices of attention and representation. This thesis focuses on a technique of mediated observation-simultaneously filmic, sonic, and textual-promoting an awareness of the multiple dimensions through which nonhumans constitute collectives. Playing upon the ubiquity of mobile devices, these techniques are brought together in the form of a smart phone application that prompts users to redirect their attention to the multitude of entities active around them. Participants' responses aggregate as a database of relational anecdotes, which is then choreographed into a series of episodic representations. Forgoing the human monopoly over the fabrication of worlds, these seek to foster an aesthetic "contact zone" whereby the agency of nonhumans is foregrounded. De-centering, yet not negating, the human.

This thesis is about architecture that uses earth as the prime· building material in the context of rural Bangladesh. In extreme environmental conditions of annual floods, rain and atmospheric humidity, the use of earth, the most readily available building material, faces serious constraints. Yet examples of earthen architecture abound there. Other parts of the world endowed with similar climatic and socio-economic conditions also yield interesting examples of such architecture. The advent of imported, industrial building products has disrupted the long-standing indigenous building traditions. New social, cultural, economic and environmental conditions necessitate the upgrading of local building techniques. In recent years, much work and research has been conducted to develop improved techniques of building with earth. Not all the improvised methods can be applied in the context of rural Bangladesh, yet some do indicate potentials for application. Methods of evaluating such applicable techniques, and of formulating design guidelines and principles for using them in rural Bangladesh form the main subject matter of the thesis.

Full textSince the early 80s, technological advances of seabed imagery and exploration of continental margins allowed to discover and study numerous seabed features recording fluid circulation within the sediment column. In this study of mud volcanoes, we propose an innovative method of analysis combining an automated statistical approach including detection and analysis of morphometric parameters together with a classical geological study. We used broad homogenous academic and industrial marine geophysical and geological dataset, at the scale of Eastern Mediterranean sea.The analysis of these parameters shows that the mechanism of formation of the mud volcanoes is directly related to a local or regional constrain that may have a tectonic or gravitational origin.Various geological parameters conditioning the size and shape of mud volcanoes have been studied and lead to propose an original model for the formation of mud volcanoes. The design of this model, which is intended to be generic, makes it possible to group the constituent parameters of a mud volcano system in three spatial stages, from the source layer to the superficial expression

Full textThis thesis treats the architecture of a traditional village in the southern pre-Sahara in Morocco, with the aim to understand the origins and development of traditional architecture in this region in its cultural and historical context. The village chosen here as representative example is the ksar of Asrir do Ilemchane in the Drâa Valley. This settlement is a highly specific example of fortified agglomeration of living houses with central light shafts.Beyond a general designation as "Berber architecture", this study aimed to understand the enigma of its origin through a detailed and comprehensive analysis of the village architecture. To this end, we tried to distinguish the individual contributions of its dwellers, divided into two main groups: the Draoua or Haratins - the original inhabitants of the village who are farmers-gardeners in the oasis - and the semi-nomadic Ayt Atta Berbers, who practice nomadic grazing in the near the Jbel Saghro mountains and settled more recently as protectors of the sedentary group.Following a presentation of the valley’s natural and historical context and of its composite population, our research approach is based on a detailed architectural documentation in plans and drawings of about thirty houses; participant observation; and a series of interviews with dwellers - including some elders. We study how these houses were built from mud, adobe and rammed-earth, according to the specific expertise of the Haratin builders. This type of housing is put in perspective with the related lifestyle and social organization of the population, both in correlation with palm farming and the irrigation system. This analysis of architecture has allowed to construct hypotheses concerning the spatial development of the village and its protective walls over centuries, and about the recent extension of the village beyond these outer walls. We were thus able to achieve to a first conclusion: although the original concept of a “fortified house-granary”is of Draoua origin, it was later modified and enriched by the Berbers.Lastly, we will discuss how this housing was transformed in tension between tradition and modernity. These transformations are marked by the use of different building techniques and materials, and by the major changes of the local, national and global environment - all the more so since the nearest town, Zagora, expanded up to this particular ksar and eventually absorbed it as a town quarter. This situation created many disruptions in both the ksar form and its daily life

Full textThis Degree project summarizes how it is to work in the CAD program Revit Architecture. This was done because AQ Arkitekter in Eskilstuna is interested in how Revit works. Especially compared to AutoCad which is the software they are using today. Will their work become more efficient with the new software?
The starting point was to find out how it is to work with Revit when you only used AutoCAD Architecture before. The purpose with this Degree project was to investigate whether it was possible to provide all the drawings required in a construction project that AQ Arkitekter normally produce in AutoCAD.
Most of the study was done on my own with some help of outside contacts. Drawings from an already completed construction projects were produced in Revit to really see if it was possible to obtain the required drawings. The final results were a summary of the Revit features and how to generate drawings. The two programs were compared to see the disadvantages and advantages of the programs. In the end, the Degree project did become a complete report, which gives an overview of Revit and its functions.

Full textFor several years the Swedish Armed Forces have been developing the Swedish Armed Forces’ Architecture and Architecture Framework. The Framework will provide support and direction for the Armed Forces’ change and development in the future, both nationally and internationally, and will mirror Version 3 of the NATO Architecture Framework. One element of the Armed Forces that has been developed for, and is used on, international operations is the International Corvette Force. There is a lack of understanding of when, where and how an architecture framework should be used within the Armed Forces. One way of increasing understanding of the implications of an architecture framework is to study its benefits. The aim of this thesis is to show the possible benefits of the NATO Architecture Framework for the International Corvette Force. After defining the term “advantage”, there will be an analysis of those areas of interest within the NATO Architecture Framework relevant to the Corvette Force and their implications for the Force. The results and conclusions show that the benefits of the NATO Architecture Framework to the International Corvette Force are that international interoperability and the ability to co-operate with other nations are made easier through use of a common method for the description of systems.

Full textThrough the entry of web 2.0 the technologies behind web development has changed dramatically. Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX) is the umbrella term for different techniques that make it possible to build rich and interactive user interfaces in today’s web browsers. Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) describes how common services can be bundled and published so they can be consumed by different systems.
The company SYSteam Evolution AB, which has requested this project, wanted a web application that shows a graphical activity chart in order to easier view ongoing projects. The goal for this project is to develop a demo platform that shows how AJAX and SOA can be used to create flexible and reusable applications. To reach the goals, many different frameworks and technologies need to cooperate and work together.
This report will describe the different technologies that have been used and explain the different steps in the development job.
The result of the work has lead to a demo platform that uses many different technologies to show a graphical activity chart. The job requestor and the author are very pleased with the result of the work.

The Model Driven Architecture (MDA) presents an architectural guided modeling technique, using mappings and transformations that must be applied in the system models according system platforms. This work presents the FOMDA (Features-Oriented Model-Driven Architecture) approach, to help developers specifying models and managing transformations using the MDA technique. The FOMDA approach combines Features Model and MDA in an environment where developers can represent system characteristics with features and map them to transformation code that is responsible to generate the final application. This work also presents a case study using FOMDA to assist the development on an embedded real-time system.

Full textThe cost of building constructions today is high and requires the industry to become more efficient. The search for continuing streamlining have brought the utensils into line with the development. Concerning constructions the progress during the last 25 years has extended from pen and paper, to buil-int computerized three-dimensional models. At present the majority still utilize two dimensional based programs, for example Autodesk Architectural Desktop, ADT, an AutoCAD based software from Autodesk. Nowadays the programs are objectbased, i.e. construct three-dimensional geometry of the building structure. The program then plots 2D structural blueprints from the model with subsequent information of the various components. An example of such software is Tekla Structures. The arguments for and against concerning effects and differences in the duration of client time consumption that exist in the use of the various softwares will be evaluated in this report. Tekla Structures is a software adjusted for the design of construction blueprints and lends itself very well to buildings with steel and concrete structure. Since most of the construction and planning designers work with DWG files, a unified way of working is desirable, where ADT might constitute as a plausible candidate. A great advantage of Tekla Structures is that the software within the model contains the complete information necessary for design, manufacture and assembly. The blueprints generated are always updated and current.

Full textThe shortage of student housing units affects students around the country. 20,000 student housing units are needed, 50 percent of these are needed in Stockholm. Students are forced to choose between living in temporary accommodations or decline the education to which they have been admitted. These living conditions lead to a poorer quality of life during the study period, which in turn can affect the students' education and future. When designing student housing units, the social sustainability is often put aside. Social sustainability contributes to the students getting a feeling of community, solidarity and being at home. New design proposals and ideas are needed to increase the sense of community and to develop the social sustainability of student housing units. Student housing units with well-planned social spaces allows for a higher quality of life for the students. Common social spaces enhance the opportunity to make a connection with new people at the beginning and during the study period. Creating good living conditions in student housing units should be regarded as a societal interest as students, after their studies, return to society and contribute to the development of the future. The purpose of the report is to illustrate the problem with the current student housing shortage and the poor social sustainability of today's student housing units. The goal of the design is to contribute ideas for a functional design of a student housing unit with a primary focus on social sustainability and fellowship. With the help of the survey and the information that was gathered a sound basis was created before the the design work started. The result was three buildings with student housing units that were placed in one of the neighborhoods in the new area of Kista äng. The buildings have four different types of student housing units and social spaces that are available for all students in the neighborhood.

Full textPreschools in Sweden have previously been designed with separate and identical departments where all activities take place. Today, there is a different approach when designing preschools. They are now shaped with small units for different age groups, along with common spaces for play, creation, science, music and meals. In this work, a conceptual design of a preschool for 144 children is carried out in Sävast, part of the municipality of Boden, on the basis of an alreadydeveloped local program and a given site. The purpose isto form a preschool in one level with larger common used squares and explore how good spatiality is created in the squares. At the same time, the indoor environmental comfort is taken into consideration with regard to both the childrenand the educators. The work is initiated by a literature study in which architectural qualities, child needs and development is taken into account regarding preschools with a common used square. The study of literature is followed by three case studies at preschools in Luleå and Umeå, where both site visits and interviews are conducted. Thereafter, the results of the study of literatureand the case studies are synthesized using the ProblemSeeking method, which has a purpose of identifying needsand solutions. This results in a synthesis consisting of sixqualities which meet the most identified needs for childrenand educators. This in turn underlies the developing ofthe design concept. The synthesis leads to the following six qualities: Open plan, Challenging and varying, Levels and nests, Colour, material and textures, Light and transparentsurfaces and Creating activity spatiality’s in a bigger space. After a site analysis, flow and connection sketches and volume studies the result is a red-colored preschool withvarying roofs. The preschool contains a larger and smallersquare which together with the restaurant creates a circulation around a courtyard. The squares results in an open space with oblique interior walls, varying ceilings, and protruding and irregular windows. Smaller spaces in the squares are mainly created using various types of non permanent furnishings, where both transparent and opaque materials with differenttextures are present. Whether good spatiality has been created to form a pleasantindoor environment is difficult to answer when spatial experiences are individual. On the other hand, the meansthat can be used to create good spatiality in an indoorenvironment have been identified, which creates goodconditions for achieving the purpose of the design of the squares.

Full textThe work focuses on optical multiplexers operating in mid-IR for broadband source in gas sensing application. Two configurations were studies – arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and planar concave grating (PCG). First, principle of operation was understood in order to develop analytical solution for output field using Gaussian approximation of the field and Fourier Optics. Then, semi-analytical simulation tool of the spectral response for both multiplexer configurations was developed in MATLAB. Normal distribution of phase errors was introduced to semi-analytical AWG model, which allowed us to study the correlation between standard deviation of phase errors and the level of crosstalk of AWG spectral response. AWG at 5.65 µm was fabricated based on SiGe/Si technology using the MATLAB tool for design parameters calculation and P.Labeye’s tool for AWG geometry calculation. Devices with slightly varying parameters were characterized: AWG1 with 4.6 µm waveguides and 9µm MMI; AWG2 with 4.6 µm waveguides and 11µm MMI; AWG3 with 4.8 µm waveguides and 9µm MMI. Measurements of devices on chip 36 (center of the wafer) and chip 32 (side of the wafer) were performed and analyzed. Temperature measurements of AWG2 and AWG3 (chip 32 and chip 36) at points five temperature points showed linear dependence of spectral shift with the temperature which has a good correlation with simulation predictions

This thesis is concerned with the introduction of quality daylight to buildings by means of translucency in the horizontal planes or floors within the building. Since people began to build, the concept of translucency in the vertical planes. the walls of a building, has served as the basis for continual invention in structural systems and the translucent component or window itself. This thesis pursues the application of translucent floor systems as an alternative or additional means of achieving daylighting in this same vein. This thesis begins by tracing and elaborating on the early historical precedence for this application. It then proceeds to explore the properties of the various types of daylight admitted through horizontal openings and its behavior in relationship to the properties of the translucent floor construction. Through a series of physical daylight modeling techniques. basic relationships are established between the parameters of the translucent floor system and the resultant quality and quantity of daylight in the building. The basic structural systems employed in this technology are investigated and evaluated with respect to translucency of the system. The compatibility of floor translucency to various programmatic and organizational characteristics of the building is assessed. This thesis concludes by demonstrating the application of the translucent floor system to achieving daylighting in three prototypical architectural projects covering a diverse range of building types.

Full textCities facing overpopulation amid shifting climates will require practicable solutions to meet the biophilic, health, and safety needs of city dwellers. The goal of this thesis is to determine the possibility of having a living wall system which is durable, environmentally sustainable, unlimited by location and building typology, and more affordable than currently available systems. The hypothesis of this thesis is that concrete, due to its durability, cost, and ubiquity, is capable of being used as a growing medium for plant life and is currently the most realistic material choice to significantly extend nature’s reach into the urban milieu. The thesis is multi-disciplinary and combines botany and material science, but architecture is the lens throughwhich the inter-disciplinary work is validated. This architectural lens will influence the trajectory of future system design, e.g., in determining if the system would have the potential of being structural and used for the interiors and exteriors of low, mid, and high-rise buildings. This doctoral thesis would determine the feasibility of concrete living wall systems and if validated provide the foundation for sustainable concrete living wall solutions

Full textThe purpose of this thesis was to produce two alternative architectural designs, of a building, that will house various exhibitions and activities. Mainly those will be culture related; music and arts. The building is to be located in a Swedish lake, called Växjösjön, and the structure is intended to be placed on a floating hull.Initially the authors investigated, and discussed, what possibilities and limitations that were associated with the building. The authors then, separate from one another, created one alternative design each. The first of the two designs found its inspiration in different geometrical shapes, whereas the other was more of an organic design with a smooth and flowing architecture.

Bos, Anastasia. "Strängnäs City Hall." Thesis, KTH, Arkitektur, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-261589.
Full textThis project is a proposal for a new city hall in the small town of Strängnäs, located by Lake Mälaren. The area is characterised by its historic background and varying landscape. The given site for the project lies next to a public square, by one of the bays in Strängnäs. On one side of the building site, small wooden houses run up a hill where an old windmill stands. On the opposite side, blocks of brick houses rise up with Strängnäs cathedral in the background. The intersection of the two very different building typologies is unusual and although this kind of contrast is common in Strängnäs, it is ever so evident on the site of the new city hall. The new Strängnäs city hall is inspired by the characteristics of Strängnäs, such as the varying topography and mix of building typologies. It explores the unique and different qualities in the contrasting surroundings. The idea of the project is to preserve the fragmented structure and intimacy of the wooden houses, whilst simultaneously maintaining the solidness of the brick houses and the cathedral. The result is a scattered brick building connected by the terrain it stands on. The relationship between the disembodied building units forms a series of openings and outdoor spaces, creating connectivity, activity and flow between and around the city hall.

Full textThis work shows a design proposal of a modern recycling house, which is developed to ease waste sorting in a community, based on architectural och technical functions. The work is based on the constantly growing environmental issues that affects planet earth. Waste sorting och recycling are two important factors that have to be further developed to contribute to a reduced climate change. The study is based on previous produced theories, observations, surveys and interviews with experts in different areas. The results shows that a recycling house with no front or back and without entrance, makes it easier for people to engage in waste sorting.

Full textThe subject of this thesis is the wall as element of the "decor", such as the classic age understands it. For the architects and the theorists of the XVIth and of the XVIIth century, the wall contributes to the beauty of the building. Various techniques of finish allow to embellish it: dressed stone, perfectly raised, bossages, bricks, coat which unify and illuminate facings. Naked or decorated, the wall is never neutral. The architects put on the wall motives which "enrich" the composition, but the ornamental surfaces which qualify the intervals between the main elements of the decor, openings or elements of the order, and the frames which show the wall as a picture structure the composition, with or without orders. These ornaments which play a role as important on the symbolic plan as on syntactic one have their place in the classic system of the ornaments in which the orders hold the leading part. The ornaments of the wall can take the characters of the order but also have their own rhetoric; on one hand they have the qualities of the wall, on the other hand they don’t have the same origin: the first classic ornaments imitate the inscriptions of funeral or honorary monuments of the Antiquity. One of the peculiarities of the French facades is the insistence on the vertical lines of the bay of windows which is in itself a decorative composition. The architects coordinate two opposite systems: the horizontality which imposes the superimposition of the orders and the verticality of the bay of windows. They use then two means: the intensification of the horizontal moulding and the ornament of the wall. This thesis confirms certain observations on the French facade: the a-tectonic effect of the ornaments, even if this they structure the composition. To the classic principle of unity of the architectural body in which nothing can be added or substracted, the French architects bring their answer: all the elements are ornaments as well as the wall itself, which shows or hides with light ornaments

Full textVolvo Group Trucks Operations manufactures engines, transmissions and trucks to the Groups brands Volvo, Renault, Mack and UD Trucks. Powertrain Production is the production unit within AB Volvo producing diesel engines and engine components. Volvo´s production in Skövde consists of casting, machining and assembly. The foundry uses metals and alloys to produce finished components and parts. The material is stored and retrieved from the factory´s material yard. The material yards growth has occurred uncontrollably through time. Materials have been placed according to feasibility and has created a complex flow. Volvo perceives the area to be unsafe because of the confined space the staff shares with incoming and outgoing traffic. Therefore the logistics are turbid, inefficient and disorganized. The purpose was to perform a current state analysis of the material yard based on the criteria´s layout, employees and vehicles, purchasing and material handling, material flow, work measurement and risk analysis. Subsequently a new proposal was created based on the current state analysis. The methodology was based on interviews and observations. Theory has been studied for the practical implementation of a layout design, analysis of logistics and flow as well as work measurements and a risk analysis have been performed. Revit Architecture has been used to demonstrate the current layout and a concept of a new material yard. Diary was a used tool after each visit. The result of the current state analysis shows that the current layout differs substantially from previous layout. Logistics and material handling shows a high turnover and a complex material flow. Work measurements indicate in unnecessary distances and long waits. The risk analysis strengthened earlier suspicions of an unsafe workplace. The new proposal presents a layout based on "Structure, Efficiency and Security" with a significant reduction in both material handling and traffics inside the material yard. The material yard is an example of a part in the company that has not evolved in line with Volvo´s expansion. This shows an unprioritized part of the business where planning and structure has been neglected. For the material yard it is recommended that Volvo reviews their material activities and tackle their operations from the basis. Through planning, a more efficient production is obtained and thereby improved profitability. It requires that the company is at the forefront of development. Actions should be implemented if the foundry seeks a competitive advantage in Volvo´s operations.
