Mustapha, Nadira. "Muhammad Hamidullah and Islamic constitutional law." Thesis, McGill University, 2002. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=33916.

Full text
Abstract:
The socio-political tranquility of Hyderabad-Deccan preceding 1948 facilitated much educational and cultural advancement. This rapidly developing environment provided Hamidullah with the ideal opportunity for educational growth, having earned five degrees related to the field of law by the age of 28 in 1936. He began writing at age 18, and thereafter he dedicated his life to literary pursuits. Today, he has written over 100 books and 900 articles; he speaks over 20 languages and writes in over 10 languages. Along with one of his major areas of focus, Islamic constitutional law, he has written on a variety of other subject areas, ranging from Islamic theology to Islamic history, from Qur'anic exegesis to Orientalism.
This thesis attempts to study five books in the field of Islamic constitutional law by Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah in order to provide a sample to judge and analyze his scholarship. Against the background of Hamidullah's historical and political context coupled with his high level of religiosity, the thesis will examine his utilization of the scientific approach throughout his writings. This thesis furthermore looks at the potential reasons he chose the path of study that he did, dedicating his entire life to the literary sphere and to a lesser degree the political sphere. It focuses on Hamidullah's thought and methodology as they emerged from his social and political background and as he expressed them in his literary achievements. This thesis, therefore, sets out to develop a critical analysis of Hamidullah's works, his philosophical perspective, and his contribution to contemporary scholarship.
Hamidullah has contributed to Islamic scholarship by making available Islamic literature to mixed audiences since he follows the scientific approach, writes in a variety of languages, and covers a wide range of unique topics. Indeed Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah is a well-esteemed scholar of formidable status and prestige in numerous fields of Islamic history.

Khreegi, Yusra. "Women in the writings of Muhammad 'Abduh." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2014. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/20318/.

Full text
Abstract:
The 'Woman question' in Islam, under its various titles - 'women in Islam', 'women's rights in Islam', 'the status of women in Islam', 'gender in Islam' - is one that has been a topic of heated debate for the last century, and continues to be a field of intense debate and thriving scholarship. Likewise, pioneers of modern Islamic reform are often referred to in relation to modern discourses on gender, and the issue of gender is often touched on in discussions of these pioneers' reform projects, but often in a generic and superficial manner. While the Egyptian reformist scholar Muhammad 'Abduh is a figure often referred to in this context, this aspect of his thought has never been studied in detail. This study aims to deepen the study of these two questions - gender and reform - and the intersection between them. Various general books on 'the father of Islamic reform' exist, often devoting a few pages to 'women's reform' (or more commonly referring to the question of women's reform under the few pages devoted to 'Abduh's 'social reform'), creating a rather vague view of this critical figure's views on this topical question, often with unsubstantiated generalisations. This study aims at addressing this through a detailed study and analysis of 'Abduh's own discourse on women in order to discover its themes, distinctive characteristics, the questions it poses and the answers it attempts to give, as well as the tensions and contradictions within it. The study locates the gender question within the bigger context of the reform discourse that emerged in a specific historical context in response to the Muslim world's encounter with modernity. The study further addresses the extent of 'Abduh's influence on subsequent discourses on women and his legacy which continues to be contested and competed over. The study provides, for the first time, a detailed study of 'Abduh's writings on women and gender, based on primary sources, and addresses the overlaps between various rival trends often seen as distinct, pointing to the multiple and diverse roots of the contemporary genre of 'Muslim feminism', which indeed draws influence from the reformist views of 'Abduh, but not necessarily through a single linear and coherent route.

Ndiaye, Alioume. "Les Qaṣīdat de Šayẖ Ahmad Muhammad Bamba." Paris, EPHE, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009EPHE5022.

Full text
Abstract:
Šayẖ Bamba was born in Senegal (Mbacké Kadior) in 1272 in the Hegira (1855) in point of view of chronical Muhammad Lamin Diop. He died at Diourbel in the Baol country in 1927. He was taught by Saër Mati, Mamdou Bousso, Mbella War, Tafsir Mbacké Demba, Muhtār al-Kuntī, and Samba Toucouleur. He was writeen 2280 Qașīdat in which he is singing God's glroy, God's praises, and he is doing the panegiric of the Prophet. He does not forget the five pillars of Islam. He talks about the Law and Price, and does not forget the Way of the Ṣūfī and the Morality. Šayẖ Bamba talks with respect about Angels, and with suspicion about the Ǧinn. He teaches grammar in his Qaṣīdat by simple exemples. Šayẖ Bamba advises the Ḏikr that he defines like conscience of existence and God's look. He advises knowledge and action. Abstract:
Muhammad iqbal (1877-1938), is a muslim poet-philosopher, born in india and honoured today as "the spiritual father of pakistan". His poetry bears trends of persian classical imagery and mystical symbolism. Yet, iqbal's treatment proves original both in meaning and style. "the concept of nature" is one of the themes showing a personal dynamic mysticism. It also betrays a hiearchic and prophetic vision not only of nature (through the four elements, the vegetal and animals worlds) but also of man and community. The english conferences the reconstruction of religious thought in islam express at best his insistance on a quranic foundation for the development of individual and society, culminating in the position of the perfect man. However this enlightening level of god's servant requires the practice of reason, meditation and creativity involved in the infinite reality. At last, iqbal's project of pakistan betrays a tension between materialism and transcendence in a real implication in the modern world

Thomas, Edward. "Mahmud Muhammad Taha : his life in Sudan." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/22685.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a biography of Mahmud Muhammad Taha, the charismatic leader of a group of Sudanese religious and civil rights activists, the Republican brothers and sisters. They vigorously publicised his call for a mystical, inclusive reinterpretation of Islam, they worked mainly in urban areas of central Sudan in the 1970s and 1980s. Taha's views were opposed by Sudanese Muslims close to the state, and they eventually brought about his execution in 1985. Since his death, Taha has been adopted as a symbol of resistance, tolerance and human rights, and his strange and compelling views about Islamic religion and law have been the subject of several studies. This thesis gives an account of the influences that impelled Taha to become a legal reformer. It studies his family, education, pastimes, work, and his experience of religion, ethnicity, and social class. Taha founded a political party, and ended up in a colonial jail, where he had a mystical experience that shaped the rest of his life. Taha's leadership of the organisation that arose out of his jail experience is narrated from oral sources, from his writings and the writings of his followers. The thesis examines Taha's ideas about law, religion and society. It argues that Taha attempted to establish an unprecedented, working distinction between ethics and law in an Islamic idiom, drawing on the insights of the mystical, or Sufi, traditions of Sudan and the Middle East. His close identification with Sudanese and international Sufism led him to view personal spiritual eminence as a central component of his mission. This thesis shows how Taha's dreams of perfection became the target of polemic against him. Taha was a legal performer as well as a legal reformer. The thesis places his ideas in the context of Sudan's competing legal systems, its jails, judges and police. Sudan's legal confusion is related to its cultural diversity, and there is an attempt to connect Taha's life to the historical experience of an African country on the edge of the Arab and Muslim world, where the interplay of religion and ethnicity has major consequences for the division of wealth and power.

Abdullah, Ismail Haji. "The influence of Imam al-Juwayni on the theology of Imam al-Ghazali." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/2929.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to study in depth the influence of Imam al-Juwayni on Imam al-Ghazali's discussion of theology and whether or not the latter's ideas are properly derived from the former. The first chapter deals with an analysis of the life of both the Imams against the background of the religious milieu of their time. The second chapter discuss the views of the two Imams on Ilm al-Kalam. The third chapter attempts to compare and contrast Imam al-Juwayni's and Imam al- Ghazali's approach to the doctrine of the origin of the world and the existence of God. In the fourth chapter we assess the views of the two Imams on the problem of the attributes of God. The fifth chapter deals with the question of human actions and free will. The final chapter present their views on prophethood and messengership. While many Islamic scholars have a vague notion that Imam al-Ghazali's ideas on theology depend heavily upon Imam al-Juwayni, this thesis attempts to prove that Imam al-Ghazali's theological position and views have been greatly influenced by his teacher, Imam al-Juwayni. This work sets out to show this in detail.

Rowe, Ruth E. "Lady of the Women of the Worlds: Exploring Shi'i Piety and Identity Through a Consideration of Fatima al-Zahra'." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/193277.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to explore and survey the different understandings of Fatima bt. Muhammad "al-Zahra'" in different Shi'i social, religious, and political contexts. This investigation situates Fatima within a larger Islamic conceptualization of the saint or holy figure. Her liminal status in close proximity to the divine grants her a potency that facilitates her continued importance to Shi'i Muslims, though her memory differs in time and place. The contexts for this discussion range from Arabia in the centuries after her death, Safavid and Qajar Persia and modern Iran, and South Asia. Memories of Fatima reflect the concerns of Shi'i communities, political and religious leaders, and individuals for whom she remains a saint; she serves as a mechanism by which holiness is accessed and communities and persons are created, consolidated, preserved, and understood. For the scholar, Fatima provides invaluable insight into creative religious change through the lens of the Shi'i Islam.

Abstract:
Religion is an important component of her being for many people. They identify and define themselves over her affiliation to this. Besides, every competing world view is mostly looked as a menace and is fought more or less strongly in word, writing or action. Particularly the discussion with Islam has drastically intensified during the last years and leads over and over again to fierce verbal or violent attacks. Nevertheless, the struggle around notification or demarcation and the conflicts linked with it and discussions are not new, but stretch like a red thread through the history. Therefore, interesting from today's time is the development of the beginning debate in the place of origin of Islam. In which manner and with which means did the Christians immediately affected by the Arabian rule argue with the new religion? How did the argumentation patterns develop in the beginnings of the religious discourse? Which principal religious differences were perceived and picked out as a central theme? With the help of some texts of Johannes Damaskenos and Theodor Abū Qurra should become to these questions on the reason gone

Abstract:

Abstract:
Religion
Ph.D.
Much has been written about Qur’ānic references to Jesus (‘Īsā in Arabic), yet no work has been done on the structure or formal analysis of the numerous references to ‘Īsā in the Hadīth, that is, the collection of writings that report the sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad. In effect, non- Muslims and Muslim scholars neglect the full range of Prophet Muhammad’s statements about Jesus that are in the Hadīth. The dissertation’s main thesis is that an examination of the Hadīths’ reports of Muhammad’s words about and attitudes toward ‘Īsā will lead to fuller understandings about Jesus-‘Īsā among Muslims and propose to non-Muslims new insights into Christian tradition about Jesus. In the latter process, non-Muslims will be encouraged to re-examine past hostile views concerning Muhammad and his words about Jesus. A minor thesis is that Western readers in particular, whether or not they are Christians, will be aided to understand Islamic beliefs about ‘Īsā, prophethood, and eschatology more fully. In the course of the dissertation, Hadīth studies will be enhanced by a full presentation of Muhammad’s words about and attitudes toward Jesus-‘Īsā. While several non-eschatological references to Jesus appear the Hadīth and will be referenced, the dissertation focuses especially on Prophet Muhammad’s statements concerning ‘Īsā’s parousia (return to earth) and his messianic roles toward the End Times. It is anticipated that the work will contribute to further studies about correlations of ‘Īsā and Muhammad in Islamic and Christian theology, as well as to interreligious examinations of the Hadīth traditions.

Speidl, Bianka Ágnes. "Conceptualisation of power in the thought of Muhammad Husayn Fadlallah." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/18333.

Abstract:
The topic of my research is the Shi'i jurist Muhammad Husayn Fadlallah's (1935-2010) conception of power, its uses and its functions. Fadlallah was a prominent figure of the Lebanese Shi'i movement and of the Islamic revival as a whole. Specifically, I examine his book al-Islam wa-mantiq al-quwwa (Islam and the Logic of Power, 1976), in which he presents power as a coherent and sophisticated system, and definies the principles that legitimise the aspirations to power and the use of force. Fadlallah defined power as essential in constituting and maintaining the social and political structure through which the message of Islam can be put into practice and the continuity of the call to it guaranteed. The various elements and dimensions of power - spiritual, social, political - are interrelated as they secure the reproduction of quwwa, which in turn sustains the social-political order and the spiritual strength of the community. My contention is that, through his concept of power, Fadlallah reconsidered the political role of modern Shi'ism. The dissertation is divided into nine chapters. In the first chapter, I describe the historical and intellectual context in which Fadlallah expounded his theory of power. The second chapter provides an intellectual biography of the author. The third chapter presents quwwa as a system and its different components. The fourth chapter describes his reinterpretation of the Shi'i creed as a creed of force. The fifth chapter analyses his reinterpretation of the spiritual components of power. In the sixth chapter, I examine the social aspects of empowerment, followed by the seventh chapter dedicated to his conception of political power. The eighth chapter studies Fadlallah's ethics of power. The final chapter analyses his rhetorical tools and strategies. I have paid special attention to the ways and means by which Fadlallah re-interprets the Shi'i tradition and through them the Islamic principles regarding force and power. For a better understanding of Shi'i revivalist thought, I suggest to read it through a transformative paradigm which allows us to perceive the radical change in Shi'ism from quietism to activism as a multi-faceted and complex process.
