Abstract:
Al-Muḥaqqiq al-Iṣfahānī (1878-1942) and Spinoza (1632-1677), two prominent intellectuals of the Islamic and Western worlds respectively, have proposed different versions of the ontological argument for the existence of God. I present five versions of al-Muḥaqqiq al-Iṣfahānī’s argument in three general dimensions: first, the concept of the necessary being (wājib al-wujūd) as a mental concept; second, the concept of the necessary being as a representation of something external; and finally, the reality of the necessary being or what externally exists by its essence. Indonesia-Malay scholars in the past have paid great attention to hadith, but a special work which prescribes hadiths with Sufism nuances, Shaykh Yusuf was the initial figure who started it. However, studies on Shaykh Yusuf’s tasawuf thought have so far focused more on tasawuf itself, paying little attention to hadith’s aspects. This article discusses the intersection of Sufism and hadith in Shurūṭ al-ʻĀrif al-Muḥaqqiq by Shaykh Yusuf, a work that elaborate two hadiths: qalb al-mu’min ʻarsh Allāh and man ʻarafa nafsah fahuwa ʻarafa rabbah. Abstract The Persian scholar and state official Rashīd al-Dīn (d. 1318) devoted a considerable part of his literary output to the study of China (Khatā’) and its foremost cultural achievements. The most distinctive aspect of these writings is their sheer novelty. Indeed, Rashīd al-Dīn is the first Islamicate author to systematically investigate such subjects with reference to textual sources and informants from East Asia. This article discusses the motives and methods underlying Rashīd al-Dīn’s intellectual engagement with China, ultimately framing him as an example of (post-)Mongol muḥaqqiq,

An effort to preserve and utilize manuscripts in this archipelago, especially religious manuscripts, is very important due to, at least, two reasons. Firstly, there has been abundant important information pertinent to religious phenomena in the manuscripts. Secondly, physical condition of the manuscripts has been increasingly fragile. Following the process of choosing the manuscript, the author has selected one of the manuscripts preserved in the State Museum of North Sumatra. This study employs the theory of philology, literature and history in analyzing the manuscript. Analyses are focused o

The study of the architectural inscriptions of the Bengal Sultanate provides us with a new opportunity to look into the rich cultural history of this hinterland of South Asia. Most of the early Islamic monuments in the region had calligraphic works on them, as inscriptions were considered a powerful medium to convey visual, cultural, and spiritual messages to people. These inscriptions were rendered in various styles such as Kūfī, Thuluth, Naskh, Riqa‘, Rayḥānī, Muḥaqqaq, Ṭughrā’, and Bihārī. Abstract In the Islamic moral discourse, the Muʿtazilī theologians are generally known to deem moral good (ḥusn) and bad (qubḥ) to be real and related to the action itself independently of the revelation. They also admit that the human intellect is capable of grasping moral principles. This position, however, was opposed by Ashʿarī theologians who consider good and bad to be recognizable only through revelation, as well as by philosophers who believe that ethical propositions carry a social normative function, and, hence, must be endorsed by a sufficient proportion of the population to be tru

Abstract The article critically reexamines the notion of Mamluk rulers being uninterested in religious affairs and the authority a supreme religious status could bestow. It shows that, with the late Mamluk ruler Qāniṣawh al-Ġawrī (r. 906/1501–922/1516), at least one Mamluk sultan laid claim to religious authority through his participation in courtly processes of knowledge production and transmission in his learned maǧālis. These efforts culminated in the attempt to portray al-Ġawrī as “the sultan of scholars and verifiers (sulṭān al-ʿulamāʾ wa-l-muḥaqqiqīn)” and “the sultan of the truly insigh

Abstract:
This chapter examines the role of the editor in Arabo-Islamic book culture. The challenges of publishing a classical work in the early twentieth century included locating and procuring a manuscript of the work, producing a sufficiently accurate version of the text to serve as the basis of the published book, and securing the funds to cover the costs of printing. These challenges are vividly illustrated in the career of Aḥmad Zakī Pasha (1867–1934), who, like Aḥmad Taymūr and Aḥmad al-Ḥusaynī, straddled the worlds of bureaucracy and scholarship. This chapter explores the legal writings of Ibn ʿĀbidīn, the “seal” of the late Ḥanafīs (khāṭimat al-muḥaqqiqīn), to capture the full development of the tradition of late Ḥanafism. This chapter argues that by situating Ibn ʿĀbidīn within what the Ḥanafīs themselves call the late Ḥanafī tradition, readers can better understand his strong emphasis on loyalty to early authorities and, at the same time, appreciate the crystallization of the identity, opinions, and authoritativeness of the later Ḥanafī jurists and their revisions of early school opinions. This chapter shows that Ibn ʿĀbidīn maintai
