Abstract:
This study aims to explain and analyze Abdul Munir Mulkhan's sufism-style education thoughts in dealing with the problems of modern society. This thought is an exploration of ideas that aims to find a contemporary educational format that can overcome the pathologies of modernity and modernism. This study uses a historical method, with primary data derived from interviews with sources and secondary data from literature reviews of the works of other sources and writers with related themes. This research finds that the concept of education with Abdul Munir Mulkhan’s sufism-style is an attempt to deconstruct theological doctrines in Islam and conventional sufism and direct them to the functionalization of Islam in social life. The epistemology of Sufism developed in Abdul Munir Mulkhan's sufism-style education aims to synthesize an objective-empirical paradigm with a subjective-intuitive nature so as to create an integrative paradigm model. Abdul Munir Mulkhan's sufism-style education ultimately aims to open people's internal awareness of situations, conditions, and spiritual responsibilities that can lead people to improve their self-quality and be responsive to the changes that occur around them, as well as to improve the welfare of other humans through the science of charity and the scientific charity.

Full text
Abstract:
How can one use nature without unsettling its equilibrium or impair its beauty? That is the question that John Muir (1838-1914), an American writer of Scottish background, tried to answer throughout his life. Given that he lived in a culture emphasising utilitarianism and materialism, John Muir set forth an usual viewpoint which announced twentieth-century ecological thinking. Muir was a talented naturalist whose work rested on a scientific knowledge of nature. Moreover the combined influence of Christianity and transcendentalism led him to promote a moral use of nature at a time when American society was becoming more industrial and more urban. So the question arises: was Muir a radical thinker? As he endeavoured to promote the US national park system, Muir came to develop a less demanding conception of the use of nature. But the question is, how did he manage to combine the promotion of recreation and the ecological notion of nature as biosphere which implies a radical change in the way American people ought to act as regards nature. These tensions and paradoxes are precisely what make John Muir's works interesting and challenging

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Despite being trapped within an outdated mode of biographical criticism, the poetry of Edwin Muir contains a symbolic language which is deeply significant for the twentieth century. Such a language, evidently in the process of being formulated within The Structure of the Novel, deserves to be examined in its own right, not merely in the context of Muir's own biography but within a theoretical model of reading, which takes into consideration the relationship of the poetic voice to the reader. Such a relationship is analogous to the psychoanalytic discourse, which---according to Lacan---is the paradigm communication model. Lacan's theory of child development corresponds very well with Muir's own theme of the Fall from Eden, in that the mirror stage initiates a fall out of the childhood imaginary state into society's symbolic state, which event occurs in all persons. Such a Lacanian imaginary state can be seen to correspond to the non-temporal mode of perception which Muir experienced in Orkney, and the symbolic state to the social order of language, exemplified for Muir by his conversion experiences in Kirkwall. The poetic voice often attempts to regain such a non-temporal mode. Muir's themes of conflict and the journey can be seen to correspond to the two ways in which Derrida's differance can be translated into English, that is, as difference and deferment, respectively. Such an analysis of Muir's thematic symbolism allows a reading of poems such as 'The Labyrinth' to stress the Derridean 'play' which is inherent in the opposition of faith and doubt in Muir's ontology. Finally, Muir's eschatological themes can be analysed using a Jungian model. The reader's unconscious takes part in an archetypal projection upon the text, which thus mirrors his or her own unconscious functions. Furthermore, the individuation process, governed by alchemical principles of opposition and conjunction of elements, is necessitated by Muir's poetic voice.

Allen, Kirsty Anne. "The life and work of Willa Muir, 1890-1955." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/9073.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis reconstructs the first sixty-five years of the life of Willa Muir, and provides a preliminary critical analysis of her pre-1955 works. Wilhelmina Anderson was born in 1890 in Montrose where she spent the first, formative seventeen years of her life before proceeding to St Andrews University in 1907. Her university years produced academic and social success, but also the pain of a disintegrating romantic relationship and the horror of her brother's nervous breakdown. She spent the later war years in London studying child psychology at Bedford College, and living in the city's East End at Mansfield House University Settlement. She met Edwin Muir in September 1918 and married him in June 1919 - a development which cost her the vice-principal's post at Gypsy Hill Training College. They spent their first difficult married years in London where Willa pursued subsistence employment and struggled to contain the fears which plagued Edwin: but they were overwhelmed by London life and escaped into Europe for three years. This adventure included a period in Prague and one during which Willa taught at A.S. Neill's school near Dresden. They returned to three frustrating years in Willa's mother's Montrose house (where Willa wrote Women: An Inquiry) and a damp Buckinghamshire cottage from which they escaped to the cheaper, warmer climes of southern France. Five years in Crowborough then ensued; Willa produced a son, an outpouring of translations and a novel called Imagined Corners. The three years which they then spent in Hampstead were amongst the happiest in Willa's life. She produced her second novel, Mrs Ritchie, but also experienced her sons road accident. This event drove them to seek a less populous location and they moved to St Andrews. This was a nightmarish period in which they suffered social ostracism, illness and the effects of the Second World War. Willa wrote Mrs Grundy in Scotland. Edwin then began an eight year association with the British Council which started with war work in Edinburgh and then took them back to Prague. This was an initially happy experience which was soured by internal machinations at the Council and the horror of the 1948 Communist putsch. They were physically and emotionally injured by this experience but were healed by a second British Council posting to Rome. The final chapter describes their residency at Newbattle Abbey College in Scotland - where Edwin was appointed to the post of warden - and explores Willa's crisis of confidence during this period. The thesis ends at the point of the Muir's 1955 departure for Harvard University. It is a natural hiatus in Willa's personal history and marks the beginning of a comparatively fallow period in her creative life.

In ASME 2021 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2021-67500.

Abstract:
Abstract The need for an objective measure of injury in an area of the body that is difficult to study through experimental research methods combined with recent advancements in computational capabilities has led to a focus on development of detailed finite element models. Model development, anatomical detail, and injury metrics, however, varies widely. The purpose of this study was to benchmark the response of a newly developed anatomically accurate human brain model against the SIMon and GHBMC models and describe the predicted regional responses of the brain. The MCW-USAARL Head Injury Model (MUHIM) anatomy was developed using a neuroimaging atlas and neurosurgeon review. Material properties were obtained from literature. All three models were exercised using data from in-house laboratory tests that consisted of a helmeted head and neck mounted on a mini-sled device. Cumulative strain damage measure (CSDM) was calculated for each model using a strain threshold of 15, used in previous studies as a brain injury threshold. SIMon and GHBMC whole brain CSDM was 0.25 and 0.3 for the frontal and 0.40 and 0.3 for the lateral impact tests. Comparatively, whole brain CSDM from the MUHIM model was 0.27 for frontal tests and 0.45 for lateral tests. It is known that cognitive functions are region specific, and damage to one region may have specific neural sequela. Such regional or local metrics may explain different types of brain injuries.

In ASME 2013 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2013-64021.

Full text
Abstract:
Every Spring and Summer, thousands of hikers attempt to summit Mt. Rainier. Many of those hikers stop at Camp Muir, a base camp at 10,000 feet, where they can use restrooms, camp overnight, or refill water bottles before continuing their climb. Camp Muir currently uses a gas system to melt snow into potable water, requiring a tank of propane to be flown by helicopter to the camp at the beginning of each season. This system is costly and not environmentally-friendly. International Mountain Guides (IMG), one group who organizes trips in small groups, wants to replace this water production system with one that incorporates green energy. This publication examines possible designs of a new snow-melting device, describes the selected design, and outlines future testing and evaluation. Several models were considered in the design process that use readily available resources and provide constant power output. During hiking season, Camp Muir is often clear and sunny but can have high winds, meaning solar and wind energy are viable options as energy sources. However, wind speeds could be fast enough at high altitudes to damage a small device, resulting in solar energy as the selected power method. Since water production could not be limited by environmental conditions like cloudy weather, the device was designed to convert and store electrical energy. The current design of the device is portable, utilizes one solar-electric cell, and increases efficiency by recirculating melted water in addition to directly heating the snow. It requires minimal interaction and maintenance by the user. Solar-PV panels are used with rechargeable batteries to provide a constant source of power any time of day. Charged batteries are connected to the heating tank. Then, users fill the tank with snow and close the lid. The battery connects to a heating device that melts contacting snow. The melted snow is then recirculated using a pump over the top of the remaining snow. A filter with larger grating is used in the tank to filter larger debris, such as sticks and small stones, while a hand pump with a finer filter is used to both clean and extract the produced water. Early prototypes of the device are currently being constructed, tested, and evaluated. The first renditions of this design will be analyzed to ensure that they meet the desired water output using the available power input from the solar panels. The final device will be completed in September of 2013.

Abstract:
Geologic Resources Inventory reports provide information and resources to help park managers make decisions for visitor safety, planning and protection of infrastructure, and preservation of natural and cultural resources. Information in GRI reports may also be useful for interpretation. This report synthesizes discussions from a scoping meeting held in 2007 and a follow-up conference call in 2020. Chapters of this report discuss the geologic heritage, geologic features and processes, and geologic resource management issues of John Muir National Historic Site. Guidance for resource management and information about the previously completed GRI map data is also provided. A GRI map poster (separate product) illustrate the GRI map data. Geologic features, processes, and resource management issues identified include the Great Valley sequence, an unconformity, the Martinez Formation, the San Andreas Fault, an anticline, fluvial features and processes, erosion, flooding, slope movements, earthquakes, climate change, and paleontological resources.
