Abstract:
How can one use nature without unsettling its equilibrium or impair its beauty? That is the question that John Muir (1838-1914), an American writer of Scottish background, tried to answer throughout his life. Given that he lived in a culture emphasising utilitarianism and materialism, John Muir set forth an usual viewpoint which announced twentieth-century ecological thinking. Muir was a talented naturalist whose work rested on a scientific knowledge of nature. Moreover the combined influence of Christianity and transcendentalism led him to promote a moral use of nature at a time when American society was becoming more industrial and more urban. So the question arises: was Muir a radical thinker? As he endeavoured to promote the US national park system, Muir came to develop a less demanding conception of the use of nature. But the question is, how did he manage to combine the promotion of recreation and the ecological notion of nature as biosphere which implies a radical change in the way American people ought to act as regards nature. These tensions and paradoxes are precisely what make John Muir's works interesting and challenging

Abstract:

Abstract:
Despite being trapped within an outdated mode of biographical criticism, the poetry of Edwin Muir contains a symbolic language which is deeply significant for the twentieth century. Such a language, evidently in the process of being formulated within The Structure of the Novel, deserves to be examined in its own right, not merely in the context of Muir's own biography but within a theoretical model of reading, which takes into consideration the relationship of the poetic voice to the reader. Such a relationship is analogous to the psychoanalytic discourse, which---according to Lacan---is the paradigm communication model. Lacan's theory of child development corresponds very well with Muir's own theme of the Fall from Eden, in that the mirror stage initiates a fall out of the childhood imaginary state into society's symbolic state, which event occurs in all persons. Such a Lacanian imaginary state can be seen to correspond to the non-temporal mode of perception which Muir experienced in Orkney, and the symbolic state to the social order of language, exemplified for Muir by his conversion experiences in Kirkwall. The poetic voice often attempts to regain such a non-temporal mode. Muir's themes of conflict and the journey can be seen to correspond to the two ways in which Derrida's differance can be translated into English, that is, as difference and deferment, respectively. Such an analysis of Muir's thematic symbolism allows a reading of poems such as 'The Labyrinth' to stress the Derridean 'play' which is inherent in the opposition of faith and doubt in Muir's ontology. Finally, Muir's eschatological themes can be analysed using a Jungian model. The reader's unconscious takes part in an archetypal projection upon the text, which thus mirrors his or her own unconscious functions. Furthermore, the individuation process, governed by alchemical principles of opposition and conjunction of elements, is necessitated by Muir's poetic voice.

Allen, Kirsty Anne. "The life and work of Willa Muir, 1890-1955." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/9073.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis reconstructs the first sixty-five years of the life of Willa Muir, and provides a preliminary critical analysis of her pre-1955 works. Wilhelmina Anderson was born in 1890 in Montrose where she spent the first, formative seventeen years of her life before proceeding to St Andrews University in 1907. Her university years produced academic and social success, but also the pain of a disintegrating romantic relationship and the horror of her brother's nervous breakdown. She spent the later war years in London studying child psychology at Bedford College, and living in the city's East End at Mansfield House University Settlement. She met Edwin Muir in September 1918 and married him in June 1919 - a development which cost her the vice-principal's post at Gypsy Hill Training College. They spent their first difficult married years in London where Willa pursued subsistence employment and struggled to contain the fears which plagued Edwin: but they were overwhelmed by London life and escaped into Europe for three years. This adventure included a period in Prague and one during which Willa taught at A.S. Neill's school near Dresden. They returned to three frustrating years in Willa's mother's Montrose house (where Willa wrote Women: An Inquiry) and a damp Buckinghamshire cottage from which they escaped to the cheaper, warmer climes of southern France. Five years in Crowborough then ensued; Willa produced a son, an outpouring of translations and a novel called Imagined Corners. The three years which they then spent in Hampstead were amongst the happiest in Willa's life. She produced her second novel, Mrs Ritchie, but also experienced her sons road accident. This event drove them to seek a less populous location and they moved to St Andrews. This was a nightmarish period in which they suffered social ostracism, illness and the effects of the Second World War. Willa wrote Mrs Grundy in Scotland. Edwin then began an eight year association with the British Council which started with war work in Edinburgh and then took them back to Prague. This was an initially happy experience which was soured by internal machinations at the Council and the horror of the 1948 Communist putsch. They were physically and emotionally injured by this experience but were healed by a second British Council posting to Rome. The final chapter describes their residency at Newbattle Abbey College in Scotland - where Edwin was appointed to the post of warden - and explores Willa's crisis of confidence during this period. The thesis ends at the point of the Muir's 1955 departure for Harvard University. It is a natural hiatus in Willa's personal history and marks the beginning of a comparatively fallow period in her creative life.

Cuthbert, Alexander John. "Eternity's unhidden shore : time in the writings of Edwin Muir (1887-1959)." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2012. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3191/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis discusses the subject of time as dealt with in the writings of Edwin Muir, exploring the ways in which his poetry, novels, and critical writings articulate a range of perspectives regarding the nature of time and its relation to human experience. Following the adaptation of ideas through Muir’s career, a trajectory is traced from his early writings in which time is seen as a destructive power antithetical to life through to the celebration of mortality in his late writings. Integral to this development was his persistent interrogation of the relationship between time and eternity. Identifying the important role of Muir’s autobiographical method, this thesis begins by exploring his desire to obtain an objective view of human life by establishing a critical distance in his writings between the subject being presented and the imagination that presents it. To this end, his creative writings often incorporate myths, biblical allegories, heraldic symbolism, and surreal abstractions to present archetypal or timeless events and situations. In doing so, Muir is seen drawing on an array of literary and philosophical influences, many of which relate to his adolescence and formative adulthood in Glasgow. His rural childhood in Orkney and his early contact with Presbyterian and Evangelical Christianity made a lasting impression on his imagination with the resultant preoccupation with Eden and the Fall being dominant features of his poetry. Often dealt with in an abstract way in his poetry, Eden is frequently associated with his childhood on Wyre in his autobiographical writings, with the Fall, in Muir’s theorizing, forming the moment at which time becomes of relevance to humanity. Critically under-appreciated as ephemera and juvenilia, Muir’s earliest prose and poetry in The New Age magazine between 1913 and 1923 convey a strong sense of his desire to engage with the popular debates of the day regarding contemporary literary and social matters. For this reason, a significant amount of space has been given in this thesis to allow these writings to be re-evaluated; not just as portents of his later work, but also as important contributions to the vibrant journal and magazine culture of the period. Offering substantive detail to sketch the relevant biographical context, the essays, critical monographs and volumes of poetry are discussed chronologically and with reference to each other to allow the development of Muir’s ideas to be seen as an organic evolution rather than as a series of philosophical epiphanies. However, the significance of Muir’s reconciliation to Christianity in 1939 is highlighted as the single most important creative breakthrough of his mature adulthood. The extensive range of Muir’s critiques of Scottish and European culture, and his essays on the relationship between literature and society more generally, underline his position as a modernist writer immersed in the affairs of his time. Through detailing Muir’s creative and philosophical struggles with himself and modernity (which he felt he had fallen into through a time-accident) he is seen repeatedly reaffirming his commitment to exploring the nature of time and its meaning for human society.

Sanborn, Robert E. "Free servitude : a study of the mythos in the poetry of Edwin Muir." Virtual Press, 1986. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/468077.

Full text
Abstract:
The poetry of Edwin Muir has inspired a distinctive body of criticism. Realizing that his poetry is inexorably linked with his life, Roger Knight, Michael Phillips, Peter Butter and others have produced fine studies of his work against a biographical background. Margaret Anderson has contributed an important dissertation on the importance of dualism in the poems. R. P. Blackmur, J. R. Watson and Kathleen Raine have published articles that are central in informing any new Muir scholarship. This study intends to illuminate the source of Muir's inspiration, to show that his imagery is drawn from the mythos. A general review of Muir criticism supports the theory that the imaginative background he knew as the Fable, which underlies all temporal human behavior (labeled as the Story) is also the collective unconscious of Jung, the Spiritus Mundi of Yeats, the "inseeing" of Rilke, and the Mythos of Aristotle. The study reviews Muir criticism and the poetic technique of Muir, develops a special definition of "mythos" and goes on, through the explication of selected Muir poems, to show how his poetic and philosophical growth was influenced by his unique ability to gain access to the most powerful of Aristotle's four modes of Rhetoric. Finally, the study crystalizes Muir's overall aesthetic in the oxymoronic conclusion to his 1956 masterpiece, "The Horses," the term "free servitude."Muir felt that we can only function at our full potential when we use the power of our imagination to realize the essential duality of the human condition. We are, to an extent, free, and in a state of servitude. In Freudian terms, the superego enslaves us through guilt and our debt to the concept of civilization, while the id urges us on the ultimate freedom represented by the unchecked expression of violence and sex.The study concludes with an examination of Muir's final enigmatic symbol, found in the title of his last collection of poems: One Foot in Eden. Man, through the imaginative realization of his immortality, may plant one foot in Eden; the other foot remains trapped in the Labyrinth, Muir's symbol for the bewildering, impersonal complexity of our twentieth century beaurocractic wasteland. The transcendence of this entrapment gave Muir his purpose, in life and in art.

Boukraïaa, Faïza. "The Life of Mahomet (1858-1861) de Sir William Muir : l'orientalisme dans l'Inde britannique." Paris 8, 2004. http://www.theses.fr/2004PA082359.

Abstract:
In 1858, the first two volumes of a highly sought for biography were published by Sir William Muir, a British civil servant, a missionary supporter, an orientalist, and later Principal of the University of Edinburgh. Muir first described the Arab Prophet in a positive way. But in his last two volumes, published in 1861, the tone was different. Islam was viewed as an enemy of civilisation and Mahomet was criticised for his bloody measures against the Jews during the Medinian period of his mission. The high praise with which the biography was met by the Anglican missionaries in India was paralleled by fierce Muslim criticism. Syed Ahmad Khan and Syed Ameer Ali, even though they recognised the historian's knowledge of the original Muslim sources, regarded The Life of Mahomet as an insidious attack against the Prophet, and his writer as the avowed enemy of Islam. Nevertheless, Muir is now considered as the forerunner of the ground rules for serious mahometan biographies

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reads Kathleen Raine's retrospectively assembled representation of Edwin Muir, David Jones, David Gascoyne and Vernon Watkins in the light of the mode of' ...the learning of the Imagination' I, an alternative ca!l0n to Auden, Larkin etc., of which Raine is the high priest. Raine developed her canonical redress in her studies of William Blake and W.B.Yeats, which culminated in her establishing the Temenos Academy and the Temenos Academy Review. Raine is right. She is right at least that these pocts follow something ofthe same creed and practice and they do constitute an alternative to the more accepted canon of Auden, MacNeice, and Larkin. This is the main concern ofmy thesis. Whether Kathleen Raine is right in thinking that they should replace the established canon is for the reader to decide. I do not come to a decision, but the thesis may help to settle the matter. Chapters One, Two, Three and Four follow the lives of Edwin Muir, David Jones, David Gascoyne and Vernon Watkins, with individual readings of their poetry. adopting a Rainean approach, and also broader soundings in critical responses to their works both past and prcsent. The use of Platonic concepts and Christian patterning to anchor poetry is linked to Raine's critique of what constitutes the imaginative tradition, and her search for true poets perPetuating the tradition. Close consideration is given to the biographical context of each poet, and the conccpts and priorities expressed in the accompanying critical assessments of each poet. I argue then that Raine's assembling of the four poets is valid. She prompts us to appreciate a rich gathering in of conceptual, aesthetic and religious strands, a resonant binding ofthose poets isolated by plural specialisations.

Chilton, Eric. "Recreating Nature: Ecocritical Readings of Yosemite and Grand Canyon." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195485.

Full text
Abstract:
In Recreating Nature: Ecocritical Readings of Yosemite and Grand Canyon, I examine the intersections of culture and nature in two prominent national parks, and I consider the implications of nature-tourism in the environmental discourse of the U.S. Covering a period from 1848 to the present, my project aims to correct an oversight in scholarship about the park system, in which legacies of colonialism and imperialism--when addressed at all--tend to be historicized and framed as the age-old sins of a presumably reformed national politic. Instead, I examine both historical and present-day developments, emphasizing the profound cultural influence of the places we designate as natural. I define ecocriticism as an inherently interdisciplinary endeavor attuned to the interconnectedness of things. My methodology is to engage texts, images and other expressions of the national parks in a process of extended close reading and comparative analysis. While observing the particular contexts of each case, I attempt to locate these texts amidst the broadest but most essential critical terrain: they each negotiate a dialogical relationship between culture and nature. By setting the stage for examining the human and its relation to the non-human other, the parks have become key sites for displaying the recreation of nature. After my introduction I discuss John Muir's My First Summer in the Sierra, focusing on an episode where Muir risks his life for a view from Yosemite Falls. I also consider Muir's failure to empathize with Native Americans he encountered. In my next chapter I analyze John Wesley Powell's Exploration by focusing on his attempt to assert authority over a region by prioritizing the scientific tone in his writing. Next I synthesize historical and contemporary sources, discussing Mary Colter's Grand Canyon architecture alongside the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a glass-bottom walkway on the Hualapai Indian reservation. In the following chapter I compare the acrophobia-inducing photographs of George Fiske and Emery Kolb. Shanks, Justin Donald. "Among the Giants: Resituating the Environmental Philosophy of John Steinbeck." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/45433.

Full text
Abstract:
Deeply influenced by emotional, ethical, and ecological principles, John Steinbeck developed a holistic ideology to describe and analyze the relationships among individuals, society, and the more-than-human world. Although he explored environmental issues with ecological insight and philosophical contemplation that placed him well beyond his literary and scientific contemporaries, Steinbeck’s contributions to modern ecological inquiry and environmental thought have received only intermittent attention from literary scholars. Throughout his writing, Steinbeck develops a view of intellectual holism that encourages (perhaps even enables) us to dovetail science and ethics as we attempt to construct a new environmental paradigm. Viewing the world through his holistic lens, Steinbeck was able to see the global ecosystem, local environments, human communities, and even minute tide pools as objects of scientific and artistic inquiry. Specifically, it is my contention that the American environmental movement owes a greater debt to John Steinbeck than it realizes. In short, John Steinbeck made significant contributions to the growing awareness of human-nature interconnectedness and the parallels between social ills and ecological ailments. Yet, for whatever reasons Steinbeck is not granted a position of honor alongside the other giants of American environmental thought. Now witnessing the full blossoming of 21st century environmentalism, it is useful to cast a reflexive eye upon our ideological forebears with the intent to better understand the genealogy of the American environmental movement. Doing so will not only provide a richer and fuller family tree, but will also promote additional flourishing of new approaches to solving ongoing environmental troubles.

This master thesis deals with the interrelation among the processes of collective construction of habitats of rural settlements coordinated by the MST (the Landless Rural Workers' Movement in Brazil) and its organicity, based on the leading references of four experiments advised by the research group GERAH, from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, during the period 2003 to 2012. This theme has a purpose to contribute to the understanding of the importance of these community efforts for the organicity in the rural settlements, by the effective involvement of their leaders in the conduction of the struggles and achievements. From there, the research looks for to evaluate the possibilities of uses of this type of procedure by a movement whose goals are not limited to the achievement of worthy homes, but to extrapolate with demands related to the historical question of Land Reform. While the settlements coordinated by MST change their system of organization Nucleus of Basis for Associations, the Movement in the state of Rio Grande do Norte undergoes changes with the disruption of his staff of militancy and direction, facing difficulties in monitoring these collective processes. To cover this scenario, the theoretical and methodological framework is based on participatory research and the foundations of the sociology of everyday life of Henri Lefebvre and his dialectical perspective. With a strategy of reflection based on regressiveprogressive method, we analyze two settlements originally organized in Nucleus of Basis that became in associations, whose homes are being built with funds from INCRA (the National Agency of Land Reform) and CEF (a federal brazilian bank) since 2008. The other practices of collective construction experienced by Movement happened in two other settlements, organized from Nucleus of Basis, who had their homes built between 2004 and 2005 with funds from INCRA. In this context, this research investigates if the process of collective construction of habitats in rural settlements coordinated by MST contributes to the organic nature of the target group and how this occurs.

Coffey, David. "Admitted truths in Muslim-Christian dialogue : a study of William Muir, Sayyid Ahmad Khān and William Goldsack in 19th century India." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/23308.

Abstract:
Muslim-Christian dialogue is based on two different sources of authority – the Qur’an and the Bible. Muslims and Christians have often entertained one of two objectives in dialogue, the first is to prove one’s position superior while the second is to gain an adherent to one’s position. This thesis recognizes two methods and argues that logical dialectic tends to seek the first objective, while admitted truths opens up the possibility of the second. It does this by examining the basis for and the use of admitted truths in the writings of three authors during the 19th century in India. Chapter I presents an overview of the principal Muslim-Christian dialogues during the 8th-11th centuries. Chapter II provides an insight into the cultural context of 19th century India in which both Muslims and Christians strove to set forth their respective views in an alien culture. Chapter III gives a summary of the lives of William Muir, Sayyid Ahmd Khan and William Goldsack who were at the forefront of employing admitted truths in India. Chapters IV, V, and VI describe how these three authors applied historical analysis to the Qur’an (IV), the Sunna (V), and the biographies of Muhammad (VI), and hence demonstrate the basis for their use of these Islamic sources in Muslim-Christian dialogue. Chapters VII, VIII, and IX show how these three authors use the Islamic sources, which admit aspects of Christian truth. Foremost among these truths admitted in the Qur’an and the Bible are; the trustworthiness of the Biblical Scriptures (VII); the unique place of Jesus (VIII); and the nature and activity of God (IX). Chapter X (epilogue) concludes that the method of using admitted truths is equally, if not more faithful to the sources of Islam and Christianity and more sympathetic to the cultural expression of these two Faiths than logical dialectic. It is therefore more effective in a dialogue in which one has the objective of gaining an adherent to one’s own position.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the significance of the newspaper press in a settler society, in this case Poverty Bay on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand. It examines the circumstances of such a society's communications needs and problems, and its demographic structure. It also looks at the changing patterns of journalism in nineteenth century New Zealand and elsewhere and, importantly, printing's technological progress as it affected a provincial newspaper. Remoteness was a dominating feature of the Poverty Bay district and European settlement was slow to develop. The consequence was twofold: institutions, such as the church, the press and the school, were already well-established in New Zealand by the time this second frontier region began to attract much attention - in the case of the press this meant an interconnectedness from the outset, with ideas and staff emanating from established New Zealand circles - and communication difficulties caused by isolation. Poverty Bay's first newspaper, the Poverty Bay Standard, began in 1872, more than thirty years after New Zealand's first newspaper, the New Zealand Gazette. The 1870s saw a clamour of activity. This was reflected in the district's press, not only within its pages, but also with considerable competition and changing of ownership. Eventually one newspaper, the Poverty Bay Herald, succeeded where all others failed. The Poverty Bay Herald has remained in the hands of one family since experienced printer Allan Ramsay Muir became part-owner in 1884. Thus, the family and the community have been intertwined for one hundred and twenty years. Good provincial newspapers provide a cohesive element in their society or they do not succeed. The Poverty Bay Herald initially survived through luck and useful friends but it became a beacon for its community in that it reflected success and modernity. Many others attempted to dislodge it or share the stage, but the Poverty Bay Herald played, and still plays, a significant role as the former 'out district' stabilized and advanced.

Abstract:
In 1867, the budding naturalist and future father of our national parks, John Muir, embarked on his thousand-mile walk to the Gulf from Jeffersonville, Indiana, to Cedar Key, Florida. Almost 150 years later I undertook the same journey, retracing the wilderness advocate’s footsteps through the South to catalog all that has changed in a century and a half of progress, to try and better understand the inception of his environmental ethics, and to learn to see the world as he did, harmonious, interconnected, rejuvenating and imbued with a pervasive spirituality. The chapters of this thesis retell selected legs of that journey.

Abstract:
In this study I attempt to draw attention to the complexities behind the "making" of George Mackay Brown. I re-address the question of his literary rating by contextualising his work within the broader framework of twentieth-century British and European literary practices and traditions of thought. Whilst duly acknowledging the significance of Brown's Orcadian background, this study is based on the perception that it is the creative tension between Orkney as a source of potent symbols and patterns and other literary and extra-literary influences that gives his work a distinct profile. Rather than following the question of what Brown did for Orkney and for Orcadian or Scottish literature and literary identity, I examine what Scottish, English and European writing and writers did for Brown and how they helped to define his aesthetic and spiritual stance. Accordingly, I set his work, for contrast and comparison among the works of writers who profoundly influenced him. After establishing the background to Brown-scholarship in chapter one, clarifying the reception of Brown in Britain as well as discussing factors that affected the evaluation of his work, I proceed in chapter two with a consideration of Brown's and Muir's literary and personal relationship. Chapter three establishes a case of affinity and influence between Hopkins and Brown. Separated chronologically, the two poets are yet remarkably contemporaneous in their spiritual vision and their approach to poetry and the word. Hopkins provided a stimulus for Brown to look for a system that would allow him to exercise and deploy the latent power and the unused resources in the English language. Moreover, their shared religious beliefs are further connected to their prophetic and bardic conception of the poetic office and the poetic techniques they use.

Abstract:
This paper hopes to analyze the intersection between diversity and numbers of visitors and landscape preservation in the National Park Service. Current scholarship addresses either diversity in the Park System or carrying capacity and human population pressures. However, both are critical issues facing the National Park Service in the 21st century, and looking at the issues in isolation means missing a key interaction and potentially working to solve one problem that in turn amplifies another. Here, diversity of park-goers and preservation priorities will be addressed together, each as part of the other. Pinnacles National Park, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and Muir Woods National Monument each face human population pressures, yet each park has unique issues that illuminate the larger struggles within in NPS to ensure its mission to preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations is still being met 100 years after conception.
