This article analyses the portrayal of the impact of capitalism on the working-class family and the promotion of the communist movement as a form of surrogate family in Maria Leitner’s Mädchen mit drei Namen (1932) and Hermynia Zur Mühlen’s Lina: Erzählung aus dem Leben eines Dienstmädchens (1924). Reading these two Weimar-era texts as works of Gebrauchsliteratur, which seek to promote communism to a young female readership, I argue that, despite urging greater female participation in the male-dominated sphere of left-wing political action, Leitner and Zur Mühlen rely on normative ideas about gender to advocate political engagement to a demographic assumed to be politically naïve or disinterested. With reference to Weimar-era cultural discourses and strategies of the communist movement, I contest that both novellas are contradictory in their claim to represent a radically progressive political position while simultaneously failing to challenge fundamentally conservative gender norms.

Abstract:

Abstract This article presents four lenses for exploring Christian conversion and applies those lenses to three key Catholic initiation practices. The four lenses are Scripture, peak experiences, autonomy and surrender, and metanoia and epistrophe, while the three initiation practices are confirmation, the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA), and infant baptism. The author argues that there is a wide gap between doctrine and experience in these practices, particularly in reference to the Holy Spirit, and that this gap can be bridged by examining the initial Christian experience, a term introduced by Heribert Mühlen. Moreover, the author builds on the thought of Gordon Smith by making a sharp distinction between conversion and initiation. As a whole, this article advocates for an increased awareness of the Holy Spirit in Catholicism and for new experiential reflection upon the Catholic initiation process.

Mit finanzkräftiger Unterstützung durch die Montanuniversität Leoben, die zwei Anträge der Lehrstuhlleitung (hausinterne Impulsprogramme) positiv bewertete, konnte die apparative Ausrüstung aufgebaut werden, um die Forschungsziele Energieoptimierte Feinstzerkleinerung <5 µm, Smart processing und Integrale Prozessführung „mill as reactor“ in Angriff zu nehmen. Daneben werden ein zusätzliches Flotationslabor und Räumlichkeiten für Analytik mit Ende des Jahres einsatzbereit sein.Eine mobile Pilotanlage zur Rührwerkskugelmühlenmahlung und eine Labormühle für kryogene Mahlung sowie Mahlung bei erhöhtem Gasdruck sind die Anlagen, die in unterschiedlichen Forschungsprojekten erprobt, genutzt und zur Prozessreife geführt werden sollen.Die technische Erweiterung erschließt dem Lehrstuhl die Feinstzerkleinerung, Anlagenauslegung, Automatisierung von Zerkleinerungsabläufen und Prozessentwicklung jenseits des herkömmlichen Einsatzes von Mühlen in der Primär- und Sekundärrohstoffaufbereitung.

Abstract Gershom Scholems Kritik, die Wissenschaft des Judentums sei immer nur daran interessiert, was im »Salon« vorgehe, nicht aber im »Keller«, ist inzwischen von der neueren jüdischen Geschichtsschreibung Rechnung getragen worden. Dennoch gibt es immer noch zu wenige Studien zur jüdischen »Unterwelt«, vor allem in Hinblick auf die Geschichte der Juden vor der Emanzipation. Zu dieser »Unterwelt« gehörten auch Juden, die sich in betrügerischer Absicht mehrfach taufen ließen und nach ihrer Konversion auf die schiefe Bahn gerieten, weil sie mit den neuen Lebensumständen nicht zurechtkamen. Zu ihnen zählt im ausgehenden 15. Jahrhundert Hans von Straßburg, der sich in Straßburg zum Christentum bekehren ließ, durch das Land zog und immer wieder mit unterschiedlichen Delikten (Diebstahl, Ehebruch, Bettelei, Betrug, Erpressung) auf- und straffällig wurde, bevor er 1487 in die Mühlen der Nördlinger Justiz geriet, aber dennoch mit dem Leben davonkam. Seine zahlreichen Betrugsmaschen erlangten dadurch Nachruhm, dass frühneuzeitliche Schriften, die vor betrügerischen Bettlern und Gauner eindringlich warnten, sie erwähnen und mit seinem Namen verbinden. Seine spannende Lebensgeschichte wieder hier noch einmal aufgerollt und vor dem Hintergrund der neuen Forschungen zu Judentaufen in dieser Zeit beleuchtet.

Of what are we speaking when we speak of the Holy Spirit? This most fundamental of all the questions asked in the field of Pneumatology has not received an answer widely accepted in the theology of the twentieth century. Karl Barth could write that the ‘Holy Spirit is nothing else than a certain relation of the Word to man’; while to Rudolph Bultmann, the Spirit was ‘the power of futurity,’ and was to be counted among the mythological forms of New Testament speech. Heribert Mühlen, on the other hand, interpreting the Latin pneumatological tradition in terms of the personalism of Ebner and Bubner, calls the Spirit ‘we,’ the unity of T and ‘thou.’ And David Gelpi reflects current feminist concerns when he designates God's Spirit as ‘The Divine Mother,’ the feminine in God. Finally, most recendy, Michael Welker has adopted the language of the natural sciences mediated through process thought and calls the Holy Spirit a ‘force field,’ while Jürgen Moltmann terms God's Spirit ‘the Spirit of Life’; a notion echoed in Mark Wallace's thesis that the Spirit is ‘the power of life-giving breath (r¨ah) within the cosmos who continually works to transform and renew all forms of life—both human and nonhuman.‘

We investigated the influence of L-thyroxine (L-T4) treatment over 3 weeks on biochemical markers of bone turnover in 12 healthy young men (age 25.6 ± 1.4 years, BMI: 22.6 ± 2.5 kg/m2). Serum parameters indicating bone formation [bone Gla protein (BGP), carboxyterminal propeptide of type I procollagen (PICP), and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BAP)] and bone resorption [cross-linked carboxyterminal telopeptide of type I collagen (ICTP) and the urinary excretion of pyridinoline (Pyr) and deoxypyridinoline (D-Pyr)] were measured before and after three weeks of treatment with 300 μg L-T4/d. T3 and T4 significantly increased and TSH decreased to almost undetectable levels even when measured with a third generation TSH assay. Markers of bone formation showed variable responses with a small but significant increase in BGP but not in PICP or BAP. In contrast, all parameters of bone resorption increased significantly with a good correlation between D-Pyr excretion and the serum parameter ICTP (r = 0.78, p < 0.0001). These changes in bone-turnover markers were not necessarily paralleled by comparable increments of other markers of tissue thyrotoxicosis (SHBG, pulse rate, VO2), suggesting a variability in tissue sensitivity. These rapid responding parameters, especially in the easily obtainable serum parameter ICTP, might be valuable tools in the evaluation of several states of thyroxine excess. G Brabant, Dept. ISSN 0804–4643 In order to characterize the role of leukocyte-activating antigens and other immunological parameters in autoimmune thyroid disease, mRNA levels of intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), endothelial leukocyte adhesion molecule 1 (ELAM-1, E-selectin), invariant chain (Ii) and the thymic hormone thymosin β4 (Tβ4) were investigated in 18 human thyroid glands, including eight Graves' thyroids, two Hashimoto's thyroids, two endemic goiters and six healthy controls. Northern blot analysis showed that in autoimmune thyroid disease, expression of ICAM-1 and Tβ4 was correlated to transcript levels of Ii, whereas in the healthy controls, expression of Tβ4, ICAM-1 and ELAM-1 was low or nearly absent. ELAM-1 and TSH receptor (TSH-R) expression, the latter serving as a thyroid specific marker, was increased in some diseased glands but showed no relation to the immunological parameters mentioned above. Localization of the specific mRNAs by in situ hybridization demonstrated a cell-specific expression of TSH-R (thyrocytes), ELAM-1 (vascular endothelial cells) and Tβ4 (cells of hematopoietic origin). In contrast, transcripts of Ii and ICAM-1 were found in thyrocytes, leukocytes and endothelial cells. Our results implicate a coordinate expression of ICAM-1, Tβ4 and Ii in autoimmune thyroid disease, yielding distinct cellular expression patterns. Differential expression of ICAM-1. Ii and the TSH-R in thyroid epithelial cells indicates active regulatory events within the thyrocyte. ISSN 0804–4643 Leptin, an adipocyte-derived hormone, induces a decrease in food intake and increases energy expenditure via hypothalamic interactions. In animal models obesity can be caused by leptin deficiency or by a dysfunction of the hypothalamic leptin receptor. Using a radioimmunoassay for the determination of leptin in human serum, we measured serum leptin levels in 227 otherwise healthy normal weight (N = 78; body mass index = 16.1–27.7 kg/m2) or obese women (N = 149; body mass index = 27.8–56.7 kg/m2). Fifty-three subjects were followed over a period of 12 weeks under weight reduction (800 kcal/day) and a subgroup of 33 for another 13 weeks after termination of the diet. Body mass index and serum leptin concentrations were measured longitudinally and compared to female controls not under diet. Under baseline conditions, log serum leptin levels were positively related to body mass index with a best fit using a non-linear regression (p < 0.001), indicating an attenuated increase in serum leptin levels with high body mass index. No subgroup with low serum leptin levels could be identified. Weight reduction induced a rapid decrease in serum leptin levels within the first 3 weeks to levels significantly lower than in body mass index-matched controls under normal diet (p < 0.001). This pattern was consistent after 6 and 12 weeks. Serum leptin levels increased again after the end of the diet but remained significantly lower than in the controls despite unrestricted calorie intake over 7 weeks. The rapid and persistent decrease in serum leptin to lower levels than expected from matched controls may explain the pertinent difficulties of obese subjects to cope with weight reduction.
