SummaryBlossom-end rot, a non-parasitic disease, was found to occur widely on some oblong varieties of watermelon, causing much damage in the southern region of Oman (Dhofar). Incidence of watermelon blossom-end rot was apparently reduced by mulch using a mixture of dried grasses or coconut leaves.

This extended exposure to the elements may alter the physical and optical characteristics of the mulch, thereby influencing crop productivity in the second year of use. Abstract:
Climatic changes have already resulted and will continue to result in gradual degradation of active upper layers in permafrost due to increased average air temperature in summer. Anthrax is an example of a climate-depending bacterial infection; anthrax agent creates spores that remain viable for a long period of time they spend in cryptobiosis in permafrost. Apparent permafrost degradation is already detected in most arctic regions in Russia and it can lead to anthrax burials decay thus creating elevated risks of the infection among farm animals and people who live on these territories. Mulching is considered as a simplest utilization of water hyacinth. In this study, a field experiment using the litterbag method was conducted on the decomposition of the water hyacinth mulch under vegetable plot conditions. Mulch mass losses and changes in nutrient and C/N ratio were measured over 100 days to determine the effects of mulch characteristics on decomposition and nutrient concentration in the remaining mulches. The remaining mass after 100 days decomposed on the vegetable plot was 45.4%, 9.4% and 0.0% to the initial mass of the root, stem and leaf, respectively. Water hyacinth le

At present a systemic approach based on occupational risk assessment methodology is a key to adequate detection of cause-and-effect relations between a disease and working conditions. Our research goal was to calculate and assess individual occupational health risks for operators and drivers employed at an oil processing enterprise. Our research object were parameters revealed via special assessment of working conditions and data obtained via periodical medical examinations performed on 198 operators and 160 drivers employed at an oil processing enterprise. Straw mulch reduced the number of Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), larvae on potato during the first generation, and reduced the proportion of stems that were more than 50% defoliated compared to unmulched and unirrigated control plots. Leaf mulch and trickle irrigation did not affect number of larvae or the proportion of heavily defoliated plants compared to the control. None of the treatments significantly affected the number of adults per stem until the end of the first generation and none affected the number of egg masses, so the straw mulch must affect mortality or

Paper mulch and black plastic mulch were compared with no mulch on tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. `Better Boy' and `San Marzano') for incidence of blossom-end rot (BER) in the field during 1988–90. Early season (late July to late August) harvest had more BER than in later pickings. Black plastic mulch significantly increased early season BER in `Better Boy' relative to paper or no mulch. Late-season BER in `San Marzano' was decreased with paper or black plastic mulch relative to no mulch.

At 31 December 2005, the number of patients on maintenance dialysis in Japan was 257,765, with 9599 patients having started dialysis that year. Kidney transplant cases in Japan number about 1000 annually. Thus, almost all end-stage renal disease patients in Japan are likely to live on dialysis for the remainder of their lives. For various reasons, peritoneal dialysis has a lower penetration rate among Japanese dialysis patients, and work to educate patients and nephrologists about PD needs to be done.

The electrocardiographic (ECG) signal is a major artifact during recording the surface electromyography (SEMG). Removal of this artifact is one of the important tasks before SEMG analysis for biomedical goals. In this paper, the application of discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and empirical mode decomposition (EMD) for elimination of ECG artifact from SEMG is investigated. The focus of this research is to reach the optimized number of decomposed levels using mean power frequency (MPF) by both techniques. In order to implement the proposed methods, ten simulated and three real ECG contaminated S
