Turner, Andrew James Lamont. "Pastoral care as faith-practice of a Christian leader in a multi-faith school." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/75280.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aimed to develop a basic framework for the Christian principal in a multi-faith school to provide pastoral care as faith-practice. To achieve this, the insights of power and authority from philosophical, sociological, and religious viewpoints; the impact of lived religion as faith practice on Christian leaders in multi-faith schools and pastoral care in a school setting were investigated. Qualitative data was collected using unstructured interviews of four high school principals. Data was analysed using inductive and thematic data analysis. Major and minor themes were identified and refined. This study determined that school principals face a variety of pressures that influence their decision making, including external governmental forces, and stakeholders that react to the principal based on their perception of power and the authority the principal holds. The principal will be influenced by their religious views, resulting in positive and negative outcomes. Their religious views can be manifested as faith practice in the form of a pastoral care programme they implement in the school they lead. All aspects of the influences exerted on the principal are taken into account with the development of a framework that would incorporate all these influences to form a guide in which they can plan, develop, establish and manage a pastoral care programme in the school over which they have been appointed.<br>Dissertation (MTheology)--University of Pretoria, 2019.<br>Practical Theology<br>MTheology<br>Unrestricted

Abstract:
Religion has the ability to bring a diversity of people together in a way that crosses political, social, and economic boundaries, but divides them through conflicting worship practices, rituals, and teachings. This is especially true with the three Abrahamic religions – Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The unique aspect to the Abrahamic religions is that they all claim Abraham as a common ancestor. Unfortunately, over the two millennia since the founding of these religions, interpretations of each religious text has drastically divided the three religions. Guy Stroumsa, Professor Emeritus of the Study of Abrahamic Religions at the University of Oxford, states that after such a long time the "Jewish Avraham is no more the Christian Abraham than the latter is the Islamic Ibrahim… and there is more than one Jewish (or Christian, or Muslim) Abraham." This project is designed to create a multi-faith building that crosses the religious divides in the Abrahamic faiths and encourages inter-faith dialogue by looking at commonly used ritualistic items. Three basic items - water, a meal, and the scripture – all hold reverence in all three religions, but each religion has its own unique rituals and traditions surrounding them. This building attempts to express the similarities and differences through the built environment in a way that increases communication and understanding between the religions and the surrounding community.<br>Master of Architecture<br>Religions divide people. Dana, Jessamine. "Muktinath : an analysis of a multi-faith pilgrimage site in Nepal." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.571611.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis presents a case study of the multi-faith (Hindu and Buddhist) pilgrimage site, Muktinath/Chumig Gyatsa in Mustang District, Nepal, and presents a theory of how pilgrimage sites 'work/ and why and how they change. This is achieved through a multidisciplinary approach that uses anthropological scholarship and methods, as well as some phenomenological theory and concepts from organizational studies. It emphasizes ritual specialists as core stakeholders in the corporate phenomenon of the site, and elevates 'place', to the position of a key stakeholder; both as a subject and object of agency in the production of a variety of social, spiritual, and political meanmgs. The relationships between people and places are shown to create meanings.jind material or 'embodied' manifestations of those meanings for both place and people'Tt rs advanced by the final analysis of the site's most significant, recent changes: the increase in Hindu building and 'people- ing' of the site with ritual specialists; and the orthodox Buddhist 'reform' of the bodies and behaviours of the Buddhist nuns who are moving to Kathmandu. It is argued that these changes represent relationships of mutual constitution and interchangeability between places and people. Ultimately, this thesis argues that pilgrimage sites (and practices) are' sculptural' - that is - architectonic, spatial, and bodied, as well as historical and political. Therefore people and buildings or places can occupy the same categories and produce meanings for one another when they interact. Change within the site come from the production of many kinds of meanings during these encounters. These are not always calculated or planned in advanced, but they continuously arise out of the site and thus require continuous management by the site's ritual and governmental stakeholders.

MacAdam, L. Lane. "Legacy Planning for Major Multi-Sport Events vs Faith, Hope and Charity!" Thesis, Laurentian University of Sudbury, 2011. https://zone.biblio.laurentian.ca/dspace/handle/10219/484.

Full text
Abstract:
Not unlike many nations that have bid for and hosted major multi-sport events, franchise holders and their backers in countries around the world routinely cite a number of benefits that will accrue to their country in order to garner the public and private support required to successfully bid for and stage international level major multi-sport events. These benefits include: sport development; social, cultural, economic and community benefits, among others, derived from hosting international level sport events. Canada has an enviable record of hosting major multi-sport events. We have staged them often and we have hosted them well. Since 1967, Canada has hosted almost every major multi-sport event available to it. Billions of dollars in public expenditures have been made in support of these events from all levels of government. But do the promises that are made to convince governments, community leaders and the general public deliver the benefits that they advertise? This research paper will examine the legacy aspects of major multi-sport games from the vantage point of community development, economic impact and in particular sport benefits. It also offers a conceptual framework to evaluate the sport benefit legacies and introduces the Major Event Return Legacy Index (MERLIN©). The prospect of hosting a major multi-sport event attracts a multitude of eager bidders in pursuit of tangible and intangible legacies for a nation. However, the rising complexity and spiraling expenditures necessary to secure, plan and stage these events require more robust assessment tools to properly measure the cost/benefit of supporting these mega projects. This research paper will contribute to the body of knowledge available to assist franchise holders and policy makers in determining the true legacy benefits that can be derived from hosting a major multi-sport event instead of relying on faith, hope and charity!

Abstract:
The objective of this Master’s research project was to examine religious dialogue from the point of view of multi-religious families and different faith-based organizations. This research attempted to raise awareness of the multiple benefits of religious dialogue society-wise, of the general diversity of faith-based systems and of the role that multi-religious families play. Furthermore, it was studied how different faith-based organizations and other societal factors relate to multi-religious families, and how these relationships could be improved.   This is a qualitative research, to which a few quantitative elements were included. These elements were implemented in the two online surveys that were used for the collection of data, as well as during the data handling process. In addition to a comprehensive analysis on religious dialogue, this research considered the concepts of faith and ethnomethodology. These three underlying theories did not only support the research findings, but were actively used as the basis for the development of the surveys and their analysis. Although this research was based on a Finnish context, it can easily be generalized to any given society because of its impartial and universal basis.   The surveys were designed together with a Finnish NGO called Familia ry, and the findings of this research will be used to help them develop their future work.

Bickel, Barbara Ann. "Living the divine spiritually and politically : art ritual and performative/pedagogy in women's multi-faith leadership." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/972.

Full text
Abstract:
In a world of increasing religious/political tensions and conflicts this study asks, what is the transformative significance of an arts and ritual-based approach to developing and encouraging women’s spiritual and multi-faith leadership? To counter destructive worldviews and practices that have divided people historically, politically, personally and sacredly, the study reinforces the political and spiritual value of women spiritual and multi-faith leaders creating and holding sacred space for truth making and world making. An a/r/tographic and mindful inquiry was engaged to assist self and group reflection within a group of women committed to multi-faith education and leadership in their communities. The objectives of the study were: 1) to explore through collaboration, ritual and art making processes the women’s experience of knowing and not knowing, 2) to articulate a curriculum for multi-faith consciousness raising, and 3) to develop a pedagogy and methodology that can serve as a catalyst for individual and societal change and transformation. The co-participants/co-inquirers (including the lead researcher as a member of the group) are fourteen women, who practice within eleven different religions and/or spiritual backgrounds, and who are part of a volunteer planning team that organizes an annual women’s multi-faith conference (Women’s Spirituality Celebration) in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The aesthetic/ritual structure of the labyrinth served as a cross-cultural multi-faith symbol in guiding the dissertation, which includes three art installations and four documentary DVDs of the process and art. New understandings found in the study include: 1) the ethical sanctuary that a/r/tography as ritual enables for personal and collective change to take place within, 2) the addition of synecdoche to the renderings of a/r/tography, assisting a multi-dimensional spiral movement towards a whole a/r/tographic practice, 3) a lived and radically relational curriculum of philetics within loving community that drew forth the women’s erotic life force energy and enhanced the women’s ability to remember the power of the feminine aspect of the Divine, and 4) the decolonization of the Divine, art and education, which took place as a pedagogy of wholeness unfolded, requiring a dialectic relationship between restorative and transformative learning.

Alshabani, Bayan Omar. "The misrepresentation of Jihad in public and academic discourse and its impact on the integration of multi-faith society." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2015. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/78418/.

Abstract:
When a terror attack targets a multi-faith society, the rate of prejudice against the Muslim population suddenly increases. It was reported after the Oklahoma bombing in 1995 that there was a noticeable increase in prejudice against Arab Muslim Americans. Yet, it suddenly decreased after identifying the perpetrator as non-Arab/non-Muslim (Timothy McVeigh). This research argues that the misrepresentation of Islamic legal discourse, particularly jihad, participates in framing the cognitive aspect of prejudice against Muslims. It explains further that misrepresentation frames the mental representation of terrorism as 'Islamic terrorism'; an explicit crime that is committed by Muslims, motivated by jihad and targets the West. This thesis concludes that, due to the misrepresentation of jihad, terror attacks stimulate prejudice against Muslim populations. Misrepresented discourse confuses the receivers by activating the mental representation of a criminal act when using jihad instead of a legal rule, categorises the Muslim population as the out-group that threatens the security of the in-group, mainly the West. Ultimately, misrepresentation causes the domination of radical ideology and demonises the role of legal discourse and counter terrorism policies. This thesis makes recommendations regarding these issues. This research is library based; the researcher utilises her identity in the writing of this thesis (autoethnography). In addition to this, speech act theory is used as the main theory to reclaim the legal performative of “jihad” in Islamic international law by treating the Islamic legal discourse as an authoritative discourse. Other theories have a secondary role in examining the impact of misrepresentation on the social dynamics between the in-group and the out-group, especially after a terror attack; they are social psychology, frame theory, schema theory, discourse theory (pragmatic), and critical discourse analysis.

Abstract:
“if we do not meet with people from another faith or with another knowledge then we will not be able to integrate with each other. The purpose is to be ourselves, not to change one another but to understand one another…” (No. 1) The main aim of this thesis was to generate the needed knowledge on how interfaith organizations cooperate in their social work to aid help seekers despite the religious differences they may have, as well as to identify the obstacles the interfaith workers face in their cooperation. In addition, this thesis will also discuss the help seekers’ personal opinions concerning the help they get from the interreligious organizations. This research is a qualitative research with a case study design, based on materials collected from eighteen people by the use of semi-structured materials. The eighteen people have been represented by four leaders, two project leaders, one employee, four volunteers and seven help seekers. Both deductive[1] and inductive[2] methods were used in processing the themes used in this research. The research ethic has been considered in this paper. Both the social capital theory and the Allport’s intergroup contact theory were used in this thesis. These theories and former existing research helped in choosing the predetermined themes and in analyzing the results from the collected data which are: Religion and Freedom of religion, Common Goals, Respect- Understanding and acceptance, Responsibility and mission’s orientation, Neutral place, Interreligious dialogue, Applicable working platform, Complementary religion, Political view. The results of this thesis showed that the interfaith organizations can work as a compliment to one another in order to make the society work. This paper showed that interfaith organizations need to create common mutual norms with different roles in order to make the cooperation work. The common goals need to be very clear for both parties and additionally the structure of the system was very complex to explain to others or to introduce to the new workers. Furthermore, this thesis showed that there are people against interfaith cooperation for different reasons. Some of the obstacles the interfaith workers faced during their cooperation will be described more in the analysis part. Some of the barriers were fear from both the church members and the Stockholm Mosque on how the organization will run, which changes and consequences the church members will face and so forth. One of the interfaith organization leaders invited someone from outside the organization who gave a speech that didn’t align with their norms. They had cases which were forced to be taken up with the help of lawyers. It requires time to create and implement a functioning common structure. The common goal was not very clear for both parties and the system were very complex to explain to others or to introduce it to the new workers. Given the demographics, the volunteers had more extensive work experience and were mission oriented, which made them tend to focus on their commitments. The help seekers were very thankful concerning the help they got and wanted to do the same for others. The creation of trust through bonding and bridging was the central element or principles in this thesis, which are the keys to making the interfaith cooperation run. Morrin, Alice. "Encounters of development knowledge, identities and practices : participation of faith based organisations in multi-stakeholder partnerships for HIV/AIDS mitigation in Botswana in 2003-2005." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2013. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/44999/.

Full text
Abstract:
The magnitude of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the severity of its impact and the inadequacy of a purely medical-based response has prompted the development of multi-stakeholder partnerships (MSPs) for HIV/AIDS mitigation. MSPs utilise an appropriate mix of health and non-health based interventions and involve a broad array of stakeholders in their design and implementation, including faith based organisations (FBOs). MSP discourse commonly has goals related to local organisations’ empowerment and capacity building, yet attainment of these goals is often difficult and analysis of these MSPs shows that the complex micro-politics of development interventions is often neglected. This thesis investigates the local-level encounter and contestation of FBOs participation in MSPs based on research undertaken in the rural district of Ngamiland, Botswana. The theoretical framework is taken from a post-development perspective that sees discourses of development as pervasive forces that shape identities, knowledge and relations of power in much of the Global South. The focus of this thesis is on FBOs as specific ‘objects’ of development discourse. It argues that MSPs facilitate uniformity, impose a very specific language and envision highly prescriptive outcomes. In doing so, it suggests that MSPs frame the actions that produce and deploy a highly prescribed and increasingly globalised format for partnerships, and specifically here, for FBO participation within them. Yet, following the work of Foucault, it also argues these discourses of development are not monolithic or fixed, but rather remain critical sites of encounter where FBOs struggle and manoeuvre for political, social and economic advantage. The thesis emphasises the productive features of development discourse, their framing attributes, fragility and transformative potential, and achieves this by drawing on the activities and intentions of FBOs and their participation in MSPs. Attention is also drawn to the way ‘identities’ form and shape FBO participation. It is argued that FBOs are required to deliberately accommodate, resist, and/or construct their own particular ‘faith identities’

Abstract:
To study the educational system or pedagogy in Lebanon imposes a differentiation of what can be written in France, Canada or in other countries of the Western or eastern world. Lebanese society is indeed a pluralistic society on both political and religious levels. In Lebanon two great religions co-exist, Christianity and Islam. This coexistence within one country implies something different from the history of relations between the two great religions, two conceptions of man and two different cultures. One finds full expression in the Judeo-Christian civilization and the other in the Muslim civilization. Therefore, religious education is of major importance for Catholic schools in Lebanon that host non-Catholic students with a percentage of 40% and is managed by a majority of religious leaders (90%).Do the status of the head-teacher, whether religious or secular, his role, his leadership style and his educational missions, educational and missionary play a role and which one in motivating parents of Muslim students who enrol their children in Catholic schools in Lebanon? The specificity of this research is to characterize the roles and missions of the Catholic head-teacher in a Muslim-Christian environment and whether the leadership provided by a religious head-teacher differs from that provided by a layman for the different actors of the system. That is why we formulated the problem of our research as such: In a Muslim-Christian environment, what kind of school head allows the Catholic school in Lebanon to achieve its educational, pedagogical and missionary goals, with respect to the freedom of conscience of students and families?A field survey has been conducted through a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews with heads of Catholic, religious and laic schools, deputy heads, teachers, parents, Christians and Muslims, and Muslim students. Prospects for the future have been made regarding religious education and education to values provided in the ECL as well as the training and professionalization of future school heads as part of their recruitment

Abstract:
Multinational enterprises have been widely accused of using aggressive tax planning schemes to avoid paying tax all over the world. The purpose of this study is to analyse the methods used by multinational enterprises in the context of business restructurings to shift profits from high to low tax jurisdictions. Transactions between associated entities have generally been manipulated by applying non-arm’s length prices to these transactions, as well as devising agreements where the economic substance varies from the form of the transaction. The study aims to investigate some of the practical challenges faced by tax administrators in the application of the arm’s length principle. The study was conducted based on a literature review, as well as analysing specific examples reported in newspapers where multinational enterprises have used aggressive tax planning schemes to shift profits. International case law was also analysed to evaluate some of the factors considered by the courts in the determination of the arm’s length price. It was found that multinational enterprises definitely use aggressive tax planning schemes to shift profits. The practical challenges in the determination of arm’s length prices, complexity of the transactions involved, as well as a lack of resources, especially in the developing nations, are some of the factors that cause tax administrators to battle to find a solution to deter and detect these schemes. Other methods such as the unitary taxation method and the country by country reporting concept have been brought forward as alternatives to the arm’s length principle. These alternatives have been proposed in an effort to find a solution to the challenges posed by the arm’s length principle. Specific measures have also been recommended for developing nations’ tax administrators to resolve the issues that they currently experience in this context.<br>Thesis (MCom (South African and International Taxation))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013

Abstract:
This study explores the problem of a bibliocentric Religious Education curriculum in Zimbabwe amid the quest for a multi-faith curriculum. It traces the history of Religious Education, how it was started and crafted by the so-called missionary propagandists in order to suit their dogmatic interests. Two main aspects of the christianization of the Religious Education curriculum are highlighted, namely cultural alienation and indoctrination. Two post-independence teaching approaches, the life experience approach and the multi-faith approach are discussed in a comprehensive manner as possible solutions to the problem of Religious Education in Zimbabwe. An empirical analysis and evaluation of the views of various stakeholders about post-independence developments in Religious Education is also presented. Finally, relevant findings, conclusions and recommendations critical to successful Religious Education teaching are presented.<br>Teacher Education<br>M. Ed. (Didactics)

Abstract:
This study explores teachers’ understanding and implementation of the multi-faith Religious Education curriculum in Botswana junior secondary schools. The multi-faith curriculum resulted from an educational policy change in 1996 that saw a move from a Christian-based RE to a multi-faith Religious Education (RE) curriculum. This study is based on qualitative case studies and draws data from classroom observations, interviews with four RE teachers, five RE education officers, eight RE in-service teachers and three groups of RE students. The main participants are two groups of teachers, those who taught the multi-faith curriculum and those who taught both the Christian based RE and the multi-faith Religious Education. In this study, documents such as the syllabus document, end of month tests, end of term examinations and end of three year junior secondary school national examinations papers were used to further highlight the classroom practices of RE teachers. Furthermore, the study adopts the teachers’ professional knowledge landscape as the theoretical framework, a view that is espoused by Clandinin and Connelly (1995), that stresses the importance of teachers’ knowledge. The following themes emerge in the study; teachers’ understanding of the multi-faith RE, teachers’ classroom practices in terms of their content and pedagogical knowledge, their classroom management, and especially discipline. The study reveals that there are no marked differences between these two groups of teachers in terms of their understanding of the curriculum and their classroom practices. It further reveals that there are various factors that impact on the practices of teachers such as their view of the multi-faith philosophy, assessment skills, use of students’ textbooks, mentoring and tracking of RE graduates from teacher training institutions. The study suggests that teachers need to have an adequate understanding of students’ environment, in terms of their personal experiences and social background. The study recommends that teachers in general and RE teachers in particular need to be involved on an occasion of any curriculum change because they are the main implementers. In addition, teachers need extended periods of professional in-service training on occasions of curriculum reforms.<br>Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2010.<br>Education Management and Policy Studies<br>unrestricted

Abstract:
A research report proposal submitted to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, University of the Witwatersrand, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Architecture (Professional), 2020<br>Connection is one of the biggest aspects of our lives. Brene Brown, a Professor with her PhD in social work said in an interview that “A deep sense of love and belonging is an irresistible need of all people. We are biologically, cognitively, physically, and spiritually wired to love, to be loved, and to belong. When those needs are not met, we don't function as we were meant to.” I believe architecture can only be successful if designers constantly bare the concept of connection in mind: social connections, cultural connections, physical connections, etc. Architects need to understand what people need and want, what makes them happy. As a future architect myself, I wanted to use this year and thesis to explore this notion of connection as much as I could. The concept of connection in such a diverse country, whose foundations were built on that of segregation and not connection becomes an interesting one. It is for this reason I based my project in a township setting, a product of Apartheids spatial planning. People in townships have managed with limited resources, to create a unique township identity and sense of community that has carried residents through troubling times. ‘Ekasi’ is the term vastly used by people who call townships their home. There is probably a stronger sense of connection within town-ship settings than there is within suburbs. If people were deprived of quality public spaces but make their own, one can easily identify why certain places were chosen and not others, and then build conclusions from there. This is unlike being given a public space and told that this is what you should enjoy. In this thesis I will look at the physical characteristics of a particular township, Phumula, a place where one of my best friends grew up. I will look the streets and public spaces in order to understand how people have overcome this idea of separation that Apartheid sought to impose. However as much as people survive and ‘make do’ with what available, one is can still encourage better connections by improving the spaces that they occur in. My project aims to propose spaces for these connections to occur in and begin unravelling the twisted planning systems apartheid left. It will encourage citizens to continue to thrive in a place that was designed only for survival<br>CK2021

Abstract:
Yes<br>This paper derives from a study of community food aid in a multi-ethnic, multi-faith city in the North of England. The paper begins to make sense of the diversity of types of food insecurity assistance, examines the potential exclusion of certain groups from receipt of food aid, and explores the relationship between food aid providers and the state. Faith-based food aid is common in the case study area, particularly among food bank provision to the most ‘destitute’ clients. While food aid is adopting service responsibilities previously borne by the state, this does not imply an extension of the ‘shadow state’. Rather, it appears reflective of a pre-welfare state system of food distribution, supported by religious institutions and individual/ business philanthropy, but adapted to be consistent with elements of the ‘Big Society’ narrative. Most faith-based providers are Christian. There is little Muslim provision of (or utilization of) food aid, despite the local demographic context. This raises concerns as to the unintentional exclusion of ethnic and religious groups which we discuss in the concluding sections.<br>CLAHRC

Abstract:
Suretyships given in favour of banks are being challenged in the courts on the basis of equitable doctrines of unconscionable conduct, undue influence, or statutory provisions dealing with unfair conduct or unfair contract terms. This thesis is an enquiry into a bank's duties of disclosure or advice to an intending surety. Such an investigation also necessitates a study of the relationship between banker and customer, as the surety is quite often a customer of the bank as well, and, as a surety's obligation to the bank is an accessory obligation, the obligation is dependent on a valid principal obligation between the bank and the principal debtor - the customer. The face of modern banking has, however, changed dramatically and most major banks have become multi-functional. As a result, the banker-customer relationship may often be seen as a fiduciary relationship. A major problem brought about my multi-functioning banks is that of conflicts of interest between the bank and its customer. Furthermore, the banker-customer relationship is providing much more scope for lender liability than in the past. Various factors are currently having an impact on the law of contract, and this is expected to affect the legal policy makers in their assessments of whether a duty of disclosure of material facts exits or not. A surety has long been a favoured debtor in the eyes of the law, and the courts have developed a plethora of technical principles on which a surety can be relieved of his obligation. The escape routes of the surety, especially if he is a consumer as well, on the new grounds of public policy, unconscionability, good faith or unreasonableness, are growing. The results of these trends is the expected demise of suretyship as an acceptable, cheap form of debt security in the banking sector.<br>Jurisprudence<br>LL.D.
