In present-day language teaching the use of original news programmes received by satellite is becoming more and more important. It is a vital source of up-to-date linguistic material, and gives students a significant sense of direct contact with the country whose language they are studying. But the use of this material presents considerable difficulties. There is not much point in simply asking students to sit through television programmes in the form in which they are broadcast; they tend to fall asleep. Material has to be selected and edited, and a framework of concepts and questions must be constantly provided for purposes of study. Multi-media systems based on microcomputers provide the obvious way of doing this.

Abstract:
AbstractAs Japanese uses three writing systems (hiragana, katakana, and the ideograms known as kanji), and as materials in the target language include all three, it is a major challenge to learn to read and write quickly. This paper focuses on interactive multi-media methods of teaching Japanese reading which foster learner autonomy. As little has been published on interactive multi-media methods of teaching Japanese reading, it seems likely that traditional resources are generally used for this activity. The courseware includes sound files showing the pronunciation of each kana as well as simultaneous animation showing how to write each character. This paper investigates whether interactive courseware, used independently of classroom interaction, results in measurably greater recognition of the hiragana syllabary than more traditional methods. After briefly situating the study in the context of research on the teaching of Japanese reading and learner autonomy, the paper will present the courseware as well as an empirical study comparing the results of the use of the courseware by learners at beginners’ level: one group using the courseware, and the other using paper-based materials. This is followed by an account of learner diaries written by zero-beginner level learners of Japanese using the courseware. The study indicates that acquisition of a recognition-level knowledge of hiragana is approximately twice as fast using the courseware as using paper-based materials. Learners also learned to write the hiragana without explicit instruction.

Abstract Teaching grammar online is an increasingly necessary practice, but the process is resource-heavy, requiring online tools such as grammar videos. Studies show that current online grammar modules have mixed effectiveness, and none of the studies have examined the effects of the design of these modules. This study investigated whether an online module, designed according to basic multi-media design principles, is effective in helping learners understand the use of the ba construction. The study also asked how the students respond to the use of the online module. The findings show that the online module improved learners’ understanding and use of the ba construction. It also found that the students enjoyed using the online module and would like to have similar opportunities to learn grammar via multimedia online modules.

Abstract:
The article deals with some new challenges that foreign language (FL) teachers face in the classroom while teaching the students of Generation Z. It also deals with edutainment as one of the methods in coping with those challenges. Nowadays Generation Z is the only generation of “digital natives” who have used digital technology since a very young age and are comfortable with the Internet and social media. These students like to experiment in learning, prefer visual learning, are good team players, they tend to have short attention spans, and prefer edutainment. Generation Z students appreciate learning if they consider it interactive with games and fun activities incorporated into the FL and curriculum. FL teachers need to use more technology in their teaching strategies. Teachers need to update their teaching strategies. They need to adopt more technology-based tasks, including visual content and to give students opportunities to feedback. It’s a good idea to start a class blog and think of reasons how students can use the class blog. Generation Z are multi-taskers so FL teacher can incorporate pictures, sounds, video into all the teaching activities. Students can also have listening, writing and speaking activities at the same time. FL teacher can also use such applications and resources as Kahoot!, Socrative, Pole Everywhere, Quizlet, YouTube, Instagram etc.

The authors review all aspects of a Language Arts methods course for pre-service teachers, one which employs a multi-literacies pedagogy (The New London Group, 1996) and is taught at a laptop-based university. The course begins with a deliberate immersion into the complexities of multiple literacies, including digital literacy and critical literacy. The authors outline the course assignments, resources and instructional goals to determine how technology impacts pre-service teacher learning and intended future practice. The qualitative data sources include digital artifacts such as digital literacy stories, book talks that focus on social justice issues, and media literacy lessons. In addition, the researchers draw from cross-program data based on teacher candidate reflections and interviews. The data suggest that both the use of digital technology and a multi-literacies pedagogy can help pre-service teachers reflect on personal experiences to develop literacy teaching and learning practices that have transformative elements.

Abstract:
Preparing students to be critical thinkers and effective communicators is essential in today’s multinational and technologically sophisticated environment. New electronic technologies provide opportunities for creating learning environments that extend the possibilities of ‘old’ but still essential technologies: books, blackboards, and linear, one-way communication media. Such technologies contribute to engagement and meaningful learning in the higher education sector. Greater understanding in educational psychology and the effectiveness of educational interventions has motivated the development of various student-centred pedagogies (e.g. Problem-Based Learning (PBL)) addressing perceived shortcomings of traditional didactic instruction. PBL as a pedagogy promotes meaningful learning due largely to its power to stimulate critical, reflective and creative thinking. Can teaching staff, then, adopt technology-based approaches to create multi-disciplinary interactive PBL environments that enhance learning and excite students, inspiring them to take ownership of their own education? This paper presents a cross-case analysis of four cases that explore how classroom-based learning activities have been transferred to online formats in universities to improve critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and other learning attributes across a range of disciplines.

This research is qualitative in nature. It aims to investigate descriptively, analytically, and comparatively the modern AK model represented by the Sudan Open University Series, and the European framework, the common reference for Teaching Foreign Languages, to uncover what was achieved in them in terms of communication and language use. Accordingly, an integrated, multi-media approach has been adopted to enable the production and reception activities, and the spread of Arabic in vast areas of the world. Such a spread helps Arabic language to be in a hegemonic position with the other living languages. The study is based on getting benefit from human experiences and joint work in the field of teaching Arabic to non-Arabic speakers to meet the needs of learners. Such knowledge helps to overcome the pragmatic dimension dilemmas, and the duality between formal and colloquial, leading as a result to have a global recognition of its outputs. The study revealed the importance of building the communication and pragmatic capabilities of language learners since they both represent the life and vitality of language. It further necessitates rebuilding curricula and updating them in a way that makes communication and the use of language a reality. The research recommended eliminating any difficulties that face the Arabic language learner from the non-speakers, by making use of what was provided by the Common European Framework of Reference for Teaching Foreign Languages.

The EU have set standards in relation to cultural competence, and findings from previously funded EU commission projects have illuminated an extensively developed body of knowledge in this area in relation to healthcare. Evidence from contemporary literature shows that education interventions have a positive impact on the cultural competence of health care professionals. Nonetheless, short accessible resources that can be used flexibly to support teaching and learning around cultural competence are not available across many European countries. The aim of the TransCoCon (2017-2020) project has been to develop innovative accessible multi-media learning resources to enable undergraduate nursing students and registered nurses in five countries to develop their cultural self-efficacy and cultural competence for nursing. The purpose of this paper is to describe and discuss this European ERASMUS + funded strategic partnership project (TransCoCon 2017-2020) and the creation of its underpinning theoretical and organising framework. Abstract:
This contribution reviews the introduction of old and new information communication technologies in Ghanaian education. It points out how the recent proliferation of multi-media technologies in the country has ultimately encouraged the introduction of ICTs in education. However, the author argues that much of the move to introduce these new technologies into schools and colleges has not reflected the need to re-conceptualise teacher education curriculum practices to base its foundations on constructivist ideas about knowledge and its production. Without this, reforms to introduce new information communication technologies in classrooms risk becoming tools that are again used to reinforce old traditions of teaching and learning based on uncritical transmission of knowledge. Finally, the author argues that changes to the teacher education curriculum in Ghana, and elsewhere in Africa, should also reflect the new professional learning identities and learning experiences that ICT and other media communication tools are meant to foster in the classroom.

Abstract:
In this paper, the proposed algorithm regards the human body object character symbol using Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier to train and classify Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HOG) features, which improve the accuracy of human body detection. We use optical flow tracking algorithm based on corner points of the contour for tracking. Kalman filter is regarded as the predictor to predict the size and location of the searching object. Also, the size and location of track window is real-time updated. In this paper, we present an object tracking algorithm for multi-media teaching video shoot. Target tracking technology is used for the video image processing analysis. By extracting moving object, we can get information in the subsequent frames to determine the trajectory and size of moving objects. After analysis of a large number of experiments, we can draw the conclusion that the algorithm is effective.

Abstract:
The prospect of making computer games has often be used to “hook” students into learning programming or cognitive skills. There is, however, little research on using computer game design classes to teach computer skills. This article provides an answer to the question: Can a computer game design course employing the new generation of game authoring tools set middle school students on the path of learning a broad and sophisticated range of computer skills? The answer, based on the senior author's experiences teaching such a course eight times is, Yes. Students learned: an authoring system specifically designed for creating computer games; Windows 95 file management and other basic computer literacy skills; how to integrate outputs from several programs in one project—a form of computer literacy vital for multi-media designers; “if-then-else” logic; and rudimentary knowledge of programming with real-time events. Students also mastered a process for creating unique games and developed skills as autonomous learners.

Abstract:
Objectives: The use of social media, including Facebook, as a tool for learning is becoming increasingly important in health professional education programs including pharmacy. This study aimed to evaluate undergraduate pharmacy students’ informal use and attitudes toward Facebook in professional pharmacy education in Jordan.
Methods: This study was a cross-sectional web-based survey using a 38-item questionnaire that was developed through a multi-phase iterative process. The study targeted all professional year pharmacy students, both BSc and PharmD, at Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST).
Results: Seven hundred twenty pharmacy students responded to the survey (response rate 31.3%). The majority of the students (98.8%) had personal accounts on Facebook. Of this, the majority (82.4%) reported that they unofficially used Facebook as a tool for studying or academic purposes beside other social purposes. Overall, the students demonstrated positive attitudes toward the use of Facebook in pharmacy education. About 78.6% of the respondents reported that Facebook contributed to their academic success. Furthermore, a substantial proportion of the students found Facebook well acceptable in teaching and learning environment (55.2%) and believed that pharmacy schools should formally encourage students to use Facebook for academic purposes (54.1%).
Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that pharmacy students in Jordan frequently and highly utilize Facebook as an unofficial tool for communication, teaching and learning. Pharmacy schools should make every effort to create appropriate learning environment within Facebook that could positively impact students’ academic success. Interventions to improve attitudes toward social media e-professionalism should be in place before formally implementing Facebook and other social media platforms within the pharmacy academic environment.

Abstract:
Introduction: The annual National Diabetes Inpatient Audit (NaDIA) in the UK continues to show a high incidence of insulin errors in patients admitted to hospital with diabetes. It is clear that new initiatives are urgently required to mitigate this risk.Method: The Joint British Diabetes Societies for Inpatient Care (JBDS-IP) organised the fifth national Rowan Hillson Inpatient Safety Award on the theme of the best inpatient diabetes educational initiative to improve patient safety in hospitals.Result: The winner was Kath Higgins and the team from the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust for their ITS Diabetes – Inpatient Diabetes Training & Support programme – an educational toolkit accessible to medical, nursing and pharmacy staff. Components included face-to-face training, e-learning module, monthly newsletter social media communications with competency document and flashcards. The initiative reduced insulin errors and in-hospital diabetic ketoacidosis. There were two teams in second position. Michael Lloyd and colleagues from St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust received the award for their individualised and shared insulin prescribing error feedback system, Safe Insulin TipS (SIPS), and multi-professional simulation-based training. Ruth Miller and colleagues in North West London were commended for the project to implement Diabetes 10 Point Training in Acute Hospitals across North West London. This clinically-based teaching programme provided quick training specifically designed for all hospital settings to address the commonest diabetes errors. Conclusion: These and similar schemes need to be developed, promoted and shared to reduce insulin errors in hospitalised patients with diabetes.
