Abstract:
Multi-level splitting algorithm is a famous rare event simulation (RES) method which reaches rare set through splitting samples during simulation. Since choosing sample paths is a key factor of the method, this paper embeds differential evolution in multi-level splitting mechanism to improve the sampling strategy and precision, so as to improve the algorithm efficiency. Examples of rare event probability estimation demonstrate that the new proposed algorithm performs well in convergence rate and precision for a set of benchmark cases.

Abstract:
Abstract As an effective and possible method for computing PageRank problem, the inner-outer (IO) iteration has attracted wide interest in the past few years since it was first proposed by Gleich et al. (2010). In this paper, we present a variant of the IO iteration, which is based on multi-step power and multi-step splitting and is denoted by MPMIO. The description and convergence are discussed in detail. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Full text
Abstract:
A multi-dimensional upwind fluctuation splitting scheme is developed and implemented for two-dimensional and axisymmetric formulations of the Navier-Stokes equations on unstructured meshes. Key features of the scheme are the compact stencil, full upwinding, and non-linear discretization which allow for second-order accuracy with enforced positivity. Throughout, the fluctuation splitting scheme is compared to a current state-of-the-art finite volume approach, a second-order, dual mesh upwind flux difference splitting scheme (DMFDSFV), and is shown to produce more accurate results using fewer co

Abstract:
In this work, the technique of designing and optimizing broadband volume transmission holograms using dichromate gelatin (DCG) is summarized for solar spectrum-splitting application. Spectrum splitting photovoltaic system uses a series of single bandgap PV cells that have different spectral conversion efficiency properties to more fully utilize the solar spectrum. In such a system, one or more high performance optical filters are usually required to split the solar spectrum and efficiently send them to the corresponding PV cells. An ideal spectral filter should have a rectangular shape with sh

Abstract:
In this work a spectrum splitting micro-scale concentrating PV system is evaluated to increase the conversion efficiency of flat panel PV systems. In this approach, the dispersed spectrum splitting concentration systems is scaled down to a small size and structured in an array. The spectrum splitting configuration allows the use of separate single bandgap PV cells that increase spectral overlap with the incident solar spectrum. This results in an overall increase in the spectral conversion efficiency of the resulting system. In addition other benefits of the micro-scale PV system are retained

Abstract:
We investigate multiple crack evolution under quasi-static conditions in an isotropic linear-elastic solid based on the principle of minimum total energy, i.e. the sum of the potential and fracture energies, which stems directly from the Griffith’s theory of cracks. The technique, which has been implemented within the extended finite element method, enables minimisation of the total energy of the mechanical system with respect to the crack extension directions. This is achieved by finding the orientations of the discrete crack-tip extensions that yield vanishing rotational energy release rates
