Abstract:
A multigas concentration analyzer particularly suited for respiratory gas analysis has been developed using a new principle based on the measurement of the intensity of light emitted by excited atoms or ions in a direct current glow discharge. This glow discharge spectral emission gas analyzer (GDSEA), or light spectrometer, simultaneously measures O2, N2, CO2, He, and N2O gas concentrations with a 0–90% response time of 100 ms and a sample rate of less than 20 ml/min in a short gas sample line configuration. Mole accuracy and resolution of the GDSEA using a short sample line were determined in the laboratory to be +/- 0.15 to +/- 0.7% and 0.02–0.05%, respectively. In the clinical setting a comparative evaluation was made with a mass spectrometer in a long sample line, computerized, multibed, respiratory monitoring system. Results indicate a close agreement between the two instruments with differences in mixed inspiratory or expiratory O2 and CO2 concentrations of less than 2% and of derived variables, such as O2 consumption, CO2 production, and respiratory exchange ratio, of less than 5%.

Abstract:
An algorithm to represent impossible multibar figures and their subclass of torus figures is proposed based on graph and knot theory. A multibar type graph, which is an abstract concept of multibar figures, is defined by the junction graph that represents the connections of the lines. It is shown that the junction graph is able to characterize multibar figures where this characterization is realized according to the type of the multibar type graph. An automatic drawing system of torus figures is also presented by analyzing junction graphs that construct the shapes of corners of torus figures. The proposed method aims a basic tool for experiments in visual psychology and possible/impossible figures generation.

Abstract:
Baculovirus expression is a time-tested technique to produce proteins in insect cells, in high quality and quantity for a range of applications. MultiBac is a baculovirus expression system we developed originally for producing multiprotein complexes comprising many subunits, for structural and mechanistic studies. First introduced in 2004, MultiBac is now in use in many laboratories worldwide, accelerating research programmes in academia and industry. We have continuously optimized our MultiBac system, providing customized reagents and standard operating protocols to facilitate its use also by non-specialists. More recently, we have generated MultiBac genomes tailored for specific purposes, for example, to produce humanized glycoproteins, high-value pharmaceutical targets including kinases, viral polymerases, and virus-like particles (VLPs) as promising vaccine candidates. By altering the host tropism of the baculovirion, we created MultiBacMam, a heterologous DNA delivery toolkit to target mammalian cells, tissues and organisms. Introducing CRISPR/Cas modalities, we set the stage for large-scale genomic engineering applications utilizing this high-capacity DNA delivery tool. Exploiting synthetic biology approaches and bottom-up design, we engage in optimizing the properties of our baculoviral genome, also to improve manufacturing at scale. Here we provide a perspective of our MultiBac system and its developments, past, present and future.

Abstract:
A dual-band SiGe HBT frequency-tunable and phase-shifting differential amplifier has been developed for the future active phased array antennas with a multiband, multibeam, and multitarget tracking operation. The amplifier uses varactor-loaded, stacked LC resonators in the design of the output circuit in order to provide frequency-tunable and phase-shifting capabilities for dual frequencies. By utilizing the varactor-loaded LC resonator, which has a variable resonant frequency and a large insertion phase variation, frequency-tunable and phase-shifting performances become available. Moreover, by using the stacked configuration, the frequency and insertion phase can be varied independently for dual frequencies. A dual-band SiGe HBT differential amplifier has achieved a lower-frequency tuning range of 0.56 to 0.7 GHz for a higher fixed frequency of 0.97 GHz as well as a higher-frequency tuning range of 0.92 to 1.01 GHz for a lower fixed frequency of 0.63 GHz. A lower-frequency phase variation of 99° and a higher-frequency phase variation of 90.3° have been accomplished at 0.63 and 0.97 GHz, respectively. This is the first report on the dual-band differential amplifier with frequency-tunable and phase-shifting capabilities.

Abstract:
The baculovirus/insect cell system (BICS) is widely used in academia and industry to produce eukaryotic proteins for many applications, ranging from structure analysis to drug screening and the provision of protein biologics and therapeutics. Multi-protein complexes have emerged as vital catalysts of cellular function. In order to unlock the structure and mechanism of these essential molecular machines and decipher their function, we developed MultiBac, a BICS particularly tailored for heterologous multigene transfer and multi-protein complex production. Baculovirus is unique among common viral vectors in its capacity to accommodate very large quantities of heterologous DNA and to faithfully deliver this cargo to a host cell of choice. We exploited this beneficial feature to outfit insect cells with synthetic DNA circuitry conferring new functionality during heterologous protein expression, and developing customized MultiBac baculovirus variants in the process. By altering its tropism, recombinant baculovirions can be used for the highly efficient delivery of a customized DNA cargo in mammalian cells and tissues. Current advances in synthetic biology greatly facilitate the construction or recombinant baculoviral genomes for gene editing and genome engineering, mediated by a MultiBac baculovirus tailored to this purpose. Here, recent developments and exploits of the MultiBac system are presented and discussed.

Abstract:
Simple multiband planar antenna for wireless communication applications is presented. The proposed antenna performs four resonant modes covering multibands of wireless standards, including LTE 700, GSM, DCS, PCS, UMTS, and LTE 2300/2500. Furthermore, it covers the ISM, WiMAX, and the WLAN bands. The geometry of the proposed antenna consists of a single FR4 substrate where an open cavity fed by a coplanar U-shaped monopole is etched on one side and a short-circuited meander line in the opposite side. The cavity by its nature supports a wide range of higher frequencies, while its boundary that consists of a thin monopole resonates at 900 MHz. The meander line in the opposite side supports the LTE 700 band. The operating bands ranges are (680–748 MHz), (870–960 MHZ), (1.36–1.59 GHz), and (1.71–2.56 GHz). The antenna size is 30 × 18 × 0.8 mm3. The antenna not only has a compact size but also supports a low SAR radiation at all the operating frequencies. The proposed antenna is tested using the four recommended test positions of the CTIA association where the proposed antenna reveals good performance in all test cases in the presence of handset (keypad, battery, speaker camera, RF circuit, and LCD) in talking position, and in standby position.

Abstract:
Multiband polarization imaging is an emerging sensing method that enables simultaneous acquisition of multiband spectral and multiangle polarization information of an object of interest in the scene. Spectral signatures of the light reflected from a target reveal the characteristics of the material composing the target while polarized light provides useful information on the surface features such as light scattering and specular reflection. In multiband spectral imaging, combined spectral and polarization information offers a comprehensive representation of an object utilizing complementary spectral and polarization information in visual sensing. Multiband polarization imaging has demonstrated a potential in the recognition of targets in challenging operating environments such as low-contrast and hazy conditions. This paper presents the concept and recent advances of multiband polarization imaging techniques, in particular, a bioinspired multiband polarization vision system. Applications of multiband polarization imaging in various fields include atmospheric observation, object detection and classification, medical diagnostics, surveillance, and 3D object reconstruction.

Abstract:
This paper presents a full-scale prestressed ground anchor model test with carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) 9-bar tendons. The main objectives of this laboratory study were to evaluate the serviceability of the developed bond-type anchorage for post-tensioning applications with CFRP multibar tendons and to study load transfer mechanism of CFRP multibar tendons to surrounding rock mass. A cement-based mortar-filled steel tube was used to simulate a rock mass environment. Extensive instrumentation including resistance strain gauges, fibre optic sensors, embedded strain gauges, and linear variable displacement transducers (LVDTs) were used to monitor the behaviour of the anchor. The test results show that the tested CFRP 9-bar anchor presents an acceptable tensile behaviour under a load of 0.6fpu in accordance with existing codes. The CFRP multibar anchor presents a similar strain distribution profile as that for conventional steel anchors, except giving a shorter load transfer length. It is expected that CFRP 9-bar anchors require a minimum anchor bonded length of 2000 mm with plain cement grouts.Key words: anchor, anchorage, FRP, tendon, slip.

Abstract:
Wireless devices such as smart meters, trackers, and sensors need connections at multiple frequency bands with low power consumption, thus requiring multiband and efficient antenna systems. At the same time, antennas should be small to easily fit in the scarce space existing in wireless devices. Small, multiband, and efficient operation is addressed here with non-resonant antenna elements, featuring volumes less than 90 mm3 for operating at 698–960 MHz as well as some bands in a higher frequency range of 1710–2690 MHz. These antenna elements are called antenna boosters, since they excite currents on the ground plane of the wireless device and do not rely on shaping complex geometric shapes to obtain multiband behavior, but rather the design of a multiband matching network. This design approach results in a simpler, easier, and faster method than creating a new antenna for every device. Since multiband operation is achieved through a matching network, frequency bands can be configured and optimized with a reconfigurable matching network. Two kinds of reconfigurable multiband architectures with antenna boosters are presented. The first one includes a digitally tunable capacitor, and the second one includes radiofrequency switches. The results show that antenna boosters with reconfigurable architectures feature multiband behavior with very small sizes, compared with other prior-art techniques.

An adaptive droop control strategy for multibus DC microgrid based on consensus algorithm is proposed. It is based on platform multiagent system, which is realized by network protocol. Under the condition of a weak communication network, the bus at all levels can realize regional power autonomy through packet consensus protocol. Abstract:
Predictive mapping of seabed sediments based on multibeam bathymetric (BM), and backscatter (BS) data is effective for mapping the spatial distribution of the substrate. A robust modeling technique, the random forest decision tree (RFDT), was used to predict the seabed sediments in an area of the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf, Northern Australia, using the multibeam data and seabed sediment samples collected simultaneously. The results showed that: (1) Using multibeam bathymetry data in addition to multibeam backscatter data improves the prediction performance of the RFDT. In comparison to only multibeam backscatter data, the prediction performance achieved a ~10% improvement in sediment properties; it achieved a ~44.45% improvement of overall accuracy in sediment types, and a ~0.55 improvement in Kappa. (2) The underlying relationships between sediment properties and multibeam data show that there is an opposite non-linear correlation between sediment property-BS and sediment property-BM. For example, there is an obvious negative relationship between %mud-BS at incidence angles of 13° and 21°, but the relationship between %mud-BM is positive. As such, the RFDT is a useful and well-performing method in predicting the relationship between sediment properties and multibeam data and in predicting the distribution of sediment properties and types. However, the sediment prediction method in deep-water areas with high gravel content needs to be further evaluated.

Abstract:
The multibeam sonar is an important device for underwater survey, of which the measurement precision is a key parameter. We had designed an equipment to calibrate the depth and resolution precision for multibeam sonar in the anechoic pool in the laboratory. The main frame of the equipment is built up by circular and square steel pipes. The absorption materials are laid outside of the pipes, so that the multibeam sonar cannot receive the strong enough reflected acoustic waves from the boundary. We had made a two-dimensional scanning mechanism, which ascends and descends freely for evaluating the depth precision of multibeam sonar. The minimum precision of the depth is 0.1 mm. We had set up a series of iron blocks with the dimension of 0.1,0.2,0.4,0.6,0.8, and 1.0 square meters, respectively, as the standard objects for evaluating the resolution capability of multibeam sonar. In addition, we had placed an underwater camera system to record the iron blocks in time. The result of iron blocks measured by the calibrated multibeam sonar is compared to that recorded by the camera. Because the wavelength of acoustics is larger than that of optics, therefore, good precision of the resolution can be gotten.

Abstract:
Abstract Northeast U.S. winter storms commonly exhibit multiple meso-β-scale (L < 200 km) bands of enhanced radar reflectivity and precipitation. We use radar observations, upper-air soundings, and reanalyses from 108 cases of cool season (October–April) storms from 1996 to 2016 that occurred within the coastal corridor from Delaware to Maine to identify and assess various banding structures and environments. Banding can occur in several configurations among storms, and banding characteristics can differ at different times within the same storm. We classified 6-h storm periods as containing long (>200 km) single bands, single bands co-occurring with sets of mesoscale multibands, multibands only, and radar echoes without any bands using a combination of automated and manual methods. Use of radar reflectivity data at 0.5-dB precision and a variable rather than a fixed threshold showed that the occurrence of long single bands without any mesoscale multibands was rare, occurring in only 5 of 113 6-h periods. The most frequently occurring band configuration (55%) was concurrent single bands and multibands, which usually were present in the northwest quadrant of mature cyclones. Sets of multibands without a nearby single band usually occurred in the northeast quadrant of a cyclone poleward of weak midlevel forcing along a warm front. Overall, mesoscale single and multibands more commonly occurred after the cyclone occluded than in the developing stages. Multibands occurred in a wide range of frontogenesis and moist potential vorticity environments.

Abstract:
Design analysis of multiband-coupled stacked sectoral antenna array with finite ground plane using high low dielectric constant substrates is proposed in this paper for modern communication systems and applied physics. Multiband planar antennas have been extensively developed due to demands for integration of wireless communication systems. In this paper, we present the design and development of a multiband microstrip antenna array with parasitic coupling and stacking using two different substrates. The stacked designed antenna resonates at three different frequencies: 3.8, 5.4, and 10 GHz; therefore, showing a multiband property with good radiation (far-field) characteristics. A significant comparison study is also presented considering different dielectric constant substrates. The proposed antenna is an attractive solution for different wireless communication systems such as mobile systems, satellite systems, etc.

Abstract:
An approximate method has been presented for the design analysis of engineering components subjected to combined cyclic thermal and mechanical loading. The method is based on the discretization of components using multibar modelling which enables the effects of stress redistribution to be included as creep and cyclic plasticity damage evolves. Cycle jumping methods have also been presented which extend previous methods to handle problems in which incremental plastic straining (ratchetting) occurs. Cycle jumping leads to considerable reductions in computer CPU (central processing unit) resources, and this has been shown for a range of loading conditions. The cycle jumping technique has been utilized to analyse the ratchetting behaviour of a multibar structure selected to model geometrical and thermomechanical effects typically encountered in practical design situations. The method has been used to predict the behaviour of a component when subjected to cyclic thermal loading, and the results compared with those obtained from detailed finite element analysis. The method is also used to analyse the same component when subjected to constant mechanical loading, in addition to cyclic thermal loading leading to ratchetting. The important features of the two analyses are then compared. In this way, the multibar modelling is shown to enable the computationally efficient analysis of engineering components.

Abstract:
The article proposes two types of multibeam spherotron-diotron based on a two-spherical resonator (an early article suggested a spherotron-diotron with non-synchronous interaction on a bi-spherical resonator, where the electron beam in this generator passes along the resonator z axis from the outer sphere to the inner one and interacts with the longitudinal (axial) electric resonator field). The first spherotron type has electron beams going from outer to inner sphere with slope ϧ about the z-axis: ϧ=0, π/8, π/4. The electrons interact with the resonator field through the emergence of quadratic forces in the field increasing along the electron motion. The second type (inverted spherotron) has electron beams located in half arc of the equatorial resonator plane, and the electrons move from the inner sphere to the outside. The interaction in it is carried out due to the spatial electron phasing. Both spherotron types achieve efficiency of 30 % at ultra-high pulse power and tens of kuloampère of total beam currents. The data presented in the article indicate the prospects of broad application for the inverted spherotron by the following indicators: extreme ease of design; no precision gratings or combs are required with a step significantly shorter than the wavelength; no focusing magnetic systems are required; electronic efficiency from 26 to 45 % is ensured. Note that the spherotron is fundamentally a highpower device (10-100 MW in a 1-10ns pulse) for in order to maintain the efficiency of non-synchronous interaction, one needs a high strength of the electromagnetic field, which is achieved only with a high-power device.

In order to demonstrate the proposed multiband Pi-shaped structure, one tri-band Wilkinson power divider and one tri-band rat-race coupler are designed, fabricated, and tested. The compactness of the two demonstrated components is well kept by putting all stubs with resonators inside the components themselves. Measured results are in good agreement with the simulated results.

In this paper we concentrate on design of multiband antenna for existing wireless services. At present, the available techniques are modifying the main radiator (bending, folding, meandering and wrapping) which affects the size of antenna. This makes it more complex in implementing on RF circuits. To achieve multiband capability along with compactness in size we go with slotted multiband planar system. Here we design antenna in such a way in works on quad band frequency i.e., GPS, WiMax and WLAN(IEEE 802.11 a,b) for indoor application.

Abstract:
Abstract Maps of surficial sediment distribution and benthic habitats or biotopes provide invaluable information for ocean management and are at the core of many seabed mapping initiatives, including Norway's national offshore mapping programme MAREANO (www.mareano.no). Access to high-quality multibeam echosounder data (bathymetry and backscatter) has been central to many of MAREANO's mapping activities, but in order to maximize the cost-effectiveness of future mapping and ensure timely delivery of scientific information, seabed mappers worldwide may increasingly need to look to existing bathymetry data as a basis for thematic maps. This study examines the potential of compiled single-beam bathymetry data for sediment and biotope mapping. We simulate a mapping scenario where full coverage multibeam data are not available, but where existing bathymetry datasets are supplemented by limited multibeam data to provide the basis for thematic map interpretation and modelling. Encouraging results of sediment interpretation from the compiled bathymetry dataset suggest that production of sediment grain size distribution maps is feasible at a 1:250 000 scale or coarser, depending on the quality of available data. Biotope modelling made use of full-coverage predictor variables based on (i) multibeam data, and (ii) compiled single-beam data supplemented by limited multibeam data. Using the same response variable (biotope point observations obtained from video data), the performance of the respective models could be assessed. Biotope distribution maps based on the two datasets are visually similar, and performance statistics also indicate there is little difference between the models, providing a comparable level of information for regional management purposes. However, whilst our results suggest that using compiled bathymetry data with limited multibeam is viable as a basis for regional sediment and biotope mapping, it is not a substitute. Backscatter data and the better feature resolution provided by multibeam data remain of great value for these and other purposes.

Abstract:
The bridge deck sections used for long-span suspension bridges have evolved through the years, from the compact box deck girders geometrical configurations to twin-box and three-box bridge decks sections. The latest generation of split and multiple-box bridge decks proved to have better aerodynamic behavior; thus further optimization methods are sought for such geometrical configurations. A new type of multibox bridge deck, consisting of four aerodynamically shaped deck boxes, two side decks for the traffic lanes and two middle decks for the railway traffic, connected between them by stabilizing beams, was tested in the wind tunnel for identifying the flutter derivatives and to verify the aerodynamic performance of the proposed multibox deck. Aerodynamic static force coefficients were measured for the multibox bridge deck model, scaled 1 : 80, for Reynolds numbers up to 5.1 × 105, under angles of attack between −8° and 8°. Iterative Least Squares (ILS) method was employed for identifying the flutter derivatives of the multibox bridge deck model, based on the results obtained from the free vibration tests and based on the frequency analysis the critical flutter wind speed for the corresponding prototype of the multibox bridge was estimated at 188 m/s.

Abstract:
Abstract Many surveying companies and maritime institutions are now using multibeam systems for their operations, either offshore or in coastal and inland waters. Since the time the first multibeam echosounder appeared (late 1970s) the technology has advanced enormously. Modern systems now boast far greater angular coverage (typically 120°-150°) and form hundreds of beams. Dual-head multibeam systems can potentially cover the entire sector (180°) underneath the ship. However surveyors must be aware that the outer beams of these acoustic systems return the most errors causing that the effective swath width is shorter than what the manufacturers declare. The paper presents the methods of estimating of effective (usable) swath width of dual-head multibeam echosounder EM 3002D. Results of the hydrographic survey performed by the polish navy survey ship ORP ‘Arctowski’ have been showed in the article.

A compact multiband printed monopole antenna is presented. The proposed antenna, composed of a modified broadband T-shaped monopole antenna integrating some band-notch structures in the metallic patch, is excited by means of a microstrip line. To calculate the bandwidth starting frequency (BSF) of the T-shaped broadband antenna, an improved formula is proposed and discussed. The multiband operation is achieved by etching three inverted U-shaped slots on the radiant patch. By changing the length of the notch slots, operation bands of the multiband antenna can be adjusted conveniently. The antenna is simulated in Ansoft HFSS and then fabricated and measured. The measurement results show that the proposed antenna operates at 2.25–2.7 GHz, 3.25–3.6 Hz, 4.95–6.2 GHz, and 7-8 GHz, covering the operation bands of Bluetooth, WiMAX, WLAN, and downlink of X-band satellite communication system and thus making it a proper candidate for the multiband devices.
