Abstract:
This chapter details the conceptual foundations of the geometric construal of moral principles. The notion of a “case” is discussed, and two methods for identifying paradigm cases are introduced, the ex-ante and the ex-post method. It is claimed that moral principles can be represented by Voronoi tessellations of paradigm cases. A Voronoi tessellation divides space into a number of regions such that each region consists of all cases that are closer to a predetermined seed point (paradigm case) than to any other seed point for another principle. The distance between two cases reflects their deg

Abstract:
The overall conclusion of this book is that geometric concepts such as points, lines, and planes are useful for analyzing the scope and structure of moral principles and for balancing conflicting principles against each other. By conceiving of a case as a point in a multidimensional geometric space, the scope of each principle can be defined as the Voronoi tessellation of all cases that are more similar to a paradigm case for the principle in question than to a paradigm case for any other principle. A paradigm case is either a case we know ex-ante to be (one of) the most typical cases to which

Reorienting the welfare state towards social investment constitutes a complex and multidimensional challenge of policy recalibration and raises daunting political problems. The chapter analyses the strategy pursued by the EU, with a view to assessing its degree of ‘conduciveness’ to social investment recalibration at the domestic level. It is argued that the EU has indeed stimulated policy change, but that its potential as a social investment facilitator has been hamstrung by a number of weaknesses and shortcomings, especially on the discursive front. This chapter introduces the subject of analysis and provides the conceptual framework and the main themes of the book. It introduces the outsider and insider narratives of subnational authorities (SNAs) in EU law and sets out the characteristic features of these two parallel yet opposed narratives. We will observe that while SNAs are outsiders of EU law from a formal point of view, the insider narrative highlights their increasing role in the achievement of EU objectives and the substantive development of supranational law. The concepts of polycentricity and porosity are introduced to assist i

Abstract:
The chapter questions how we can measure global governance. It critically examines existing approaches to the measurement of global governance. It pays particular attention to key conceptual and methodological concerns of the overall endeavour to quantify and/or qualify global governance. The chapter focuses on the measurement of global governance as a multidimensional paradigm of international political and institutional practice that, being not measurable per se, requires complex aggregations of indicators and statistical data to serve as proxies to capture its broad conceptual character. Abstract:
The introduction to the volume surveys the emergence, diffusion, limits, merits, and politics of social investment as an ‘emerging’ welfare policy paradigm for the knowledge-based economy. After revisiting its intellectual roots, the chapter surveys the criticisms that are levelled against the social investment perspective in the academic literature. Provoked by critics, and also the growing evidence of social investment headway and theoretical progress, the chapter subsequently develops a multidimensional life-course taxonomy of three complementary social investment functions: (1) easing the

This paper examines multidimensional paradigms, i.e. paradigms involving more than one feature dimension. I examine the concrete case of pronominal paradigms, which involve (at least) the dimensions of person and number. The problem that arises in such paradigms is that syncretisms may be observed in each dimension, i.e. they may occur both vertically (cross-person) and horizontally (cross-number). While classical nanosyntax embodies a theory of syncretism that can account for one dimension, it requires an extension to account for syncretisms in the other dimension(s). I discuss two such exten
