Abstract:
The conventional point of view is that the Lagrangian is a scalar object (or equivalently a volume form), which through the Euler-Lagrange equations provides us with one single equation (i.e., one per component of the dependent variable). Multidimensional consistency is a key integrability property of certain discrete systems; it implies that we are dealing with infinite hierarchies of compatible equations rather than with one single equation. Requiring the property of multidimensional consistency to be reflected also in the Lagrangian formulation of such systems, we arrive naturally at the co

This work begins by explaining the issues in systolic array design. It continues by defining the criteria used in evaluating the quality of a design and its performance. An important feature of the approach taken in seeking to improve systolic systems has been the choice of target funtions. The rationale for these choices is explained and an underlying set of unifying key criteria are outlined which have been the basis of the design objectives in every case. In order to quantify improvements it is necessary to fully explore and document the current state of the art. This has been done by consi

The Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type, also called Dubrovin-Novikov brackets, constitute the Hamiltonian structure of a broad class of evolutionary PDEs, that are ubiquitous in the theory of Integrable Systems, ranging from Hopf equation to the principal hierarchy of a Frobenius manifold. They can be regarded as an analogue of the classical Poisson brackets, defined on an infinite dimensional space of maps Σ → M between two manifolds. Our main problem is the study of Poisson-Lichnerowicz cohomology of such space when dim Σ > 1. We introduce the notion of multidimensional Poisson Vertex Al
