Abstract:
Collaborative research has become increasingly prominent since the mid-20th century. This article aspires to offer a fundamental ontology of a multidisciplinary research system. As a point of departure, we consider disciplinarity as a restricted language code as noted by Bernstein. The impetus for collaboration is found in a research problem’s transcendence of disciplinary bounds. This article makes several propositions that diverge from the consensus position regarding the formation and dynamics of a multidisciplinary system. Most notably that such a system adheres to the constituent elements

Abstract:
A new product modeling method for product multidisciplinary collaborative design (MCD) is put forward. The method uses a flexible product model which can be extended transversely and lengthwise by multiple levels’ inheritance and new attribute classes’ addition and a class inheritance mechanism under network environment which allows each discipline to build own view model of a product. An open and flexible system architecture supporting the product MCD effectively is put forward, and prototype system implementation is introduced.

To develop competitive vehicles with ever increasing complexity, automotive designers need to improve their ability to explore a broad range of system architectures efficiently and effectively. Whereas traditional vehicle systems are based upon internal combustion (IC) engines, today’s environmentally conscious vehicle manufacturers must consider alternatives to the IC engine-only systems such as hybrid or electric systems. To help the engineers to model these multiple alternatives, it would be ideal to start from a base vehicle architecture. To design a good vehicle, it is necessary for each

A significant challenge in the design of multidisciplinary systems (e.g., airplanes, robots, cell phones) is to predict the effects of design decisions at the time these decisions are being made early in the design process. These predictions are used to choose among design options and to validate design decisions. System behavioral models, which predict a system's response to stimulus, provide an analytical method for evaluating a system's behavior. A general multidisciplinary design problem features coupling and feedback between contributing analyses. This feedback may lead to convergence issues requiring significant iteration in order to obtain a feasible design. This work casts the multidisciplinary design problem as a dynamical system in order to leverage the benefits of dynamical systems theory in a new domain. Three areas from dynamical system theory are chosen for investigation: stability analysis, optimal control, and estimation theory. Stability analysis is used to investigate the existence of a solution to the design problem and
