AbstractWe report experimental observations of a low-frequency (≪ ion gyrofrequency) electrostatic wave mode in a magnetized cylindrical (Q machine) plasma containing positive ions, very few electrons and a relatively large fraction (n−/ne > 103) of heavy negative ions (m−/m+ ≈ 10), and no magnetic field-aligned current. The waves propagate nearly perpendicular to B with a multiharmonic spectrum. The maximum wave amplitude coincided spatially with the region of largest density gradient suggesting that the waves were excited by a drift instability in a nearly electron-free positive ion–negat

The transition to dynamical chaos and the related lateral (cross-flow) transport of a passive scalar in the reverse annular jet flow generating two chains of wave-vortex structures are studied. The quasi-geostrophic equations for the barotropic (quasi-two-dimensional) flow written in polar coordinates with allowance for the beta-effect and external friction are solved numerically using a pseudospectral method. The critical parameters of the equilibrium flow with a complex “two-hump” azimuth velocity profile facilitating a faster transition to the complex dynamics are determined. Two regular mu

To this day, biological sonar systems still have great performance advantages over artificial sonar systems, especially for detection in environments with clutter, strong reverberation, and a low signal to noise ratio (SNR). Therefore, mammal sonar systems, for instance, bats and toothed whales, have many characteristics worth learning from. This paper proposes a bioinspired twin inverted multiscale matched filtering method to detect underwater moving targets. This method can be mainly divided into three parts. Firstly, a hyperbolic frequency modulation (HFM) continuous wave (CW) multiharmonic

A new generation of multipurpose measurement equipment is transforming the role of computers in instrumentation. The new features involve mixed devices, such as kinds of sensors, analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters, and digital signal processing techniques, that are able to substitute typical discrete instruments like multimeters and analyzers. Signal-processing applications frequently use least-squares (LS) sine-fitting algorithms. Periodic signals may be interpreted as a sum of sine waves with multiple frequencies: the Fourier series. In this paper we consider the problem of determining material parameter curves that appear as coefficients in nonlinear partial differential equations of hyperbolic type. In order to demonstrate our ideas of an identification method for this class of problems, we consider the model problem of identifying c in the nonlinear wave equation dtt - (c(dx)dx)x = 0 from boundary measurements. Motivated by the fact that in many applications, this inverse problem is naturally posed in frequency domain rather than in time domain, we work in the Fourier transformed setting. Here, nonlinearity can be accou

A multiharmonic quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) has been applied to study the viscoelastic properties of the aptamer-based sensing layers at the surface of a QCM transducer covered by neutravidin following interaction with bacteria Listeria innocua. Addition of bacteria in the concentration range 5 × 103–106 CFU/mL resulted in a decrease of resonant frequency and in an increase of dissipation. The frequency decrease has been lower than one would expect considering the dimension of the bacteria. This can be caused by lower penetration depth of the acoustics wave (approximately 120 nm) in comp

The fact that the geomagnetic field “pulsates” was known a century before the space age opened. The century of ground-based observations did lead to an effective empirical classification of the pulsations based on period, wave form, and geographical distribution (Section 3.1), but why the magnetic field of an astronomical body should oscillate on short time scales was a first-class scientific puzzle that could only by solved in the space age. Low-frequency hydromagnetic waves were first observed in the distant magnetosphere on Explorer 6 (Judge and Coleman, 1962). The task for space research w

In this study, three-dimensional numerical simulations are performed to investigate heat transfer enhancement in multi-harmonic micro-scale wavy channels. The focus is on the influence of channel surface-topography, modeled as multi-harmonic sinusoidal waves of square cross-sectional area, on the enhancing mechanisms. A single-wave device of 0.5 mm × 0.5 mm × 20 mm length, is used as baseline, and new designs are built with harmonic-type surfaces. The channel is enclosed by a solid block, with the bottom surface within the sinusoidal region being exposed to a 47 W/cm2 heat flux. The numerical
