Abstract:
A comparison between the Netherlands and Germany, concerning religious, cultural and ethnic plurality seems to be very interesting because Germany has surely never defined itself as a multicultural population, as was historically the case in the Netherlands. While pupils in the highest grades of education are supposed to be the coming leaders in their countries, the question is even more interesting: do they continue the history of their parents? The research questions we formulated focus on their attitude to cultural and religious plurality in general, to their view on the question of truth and salvation in different religions and the relation between religions, and last to their attitude to foreigners, called immigrants in Germany and allochthons in the Netherlands. The outcomes of the research are in some way surprising. Dutch pupils – especially the boys – are more negative about the plurality than their German contemporaries. Belonging to a church in Germany appears to connect with a positive attitude to migrants, while in the Netherlands this isn’t important at all, there is a great indifference on this point: The chain of memory seems to be broken in different ways. For the Netherlands there is much to discuss.

Abstract:
In 1995, as a Fulbright professor, I taught a seminar on “culture andinternational order” at Humboldt University in Berlin. There Ireached the conclusion that, in order to analyze Kultur in Germany, one also had to take into consideration the work of Schweinerei. In thefive years between the opening of the wall and my seminar, there hadbeen an explosion of interest in the concept “Kultur”—defined quiteconcretely in public discourse as an element that united (or divided)East and West Berliners, or as a substance that had been damagedduring the cold war and now needed restoration.1 Irrespective of thespeaker, Kultur was always something good, a positive ordering. Onenever needed less Kultur. Either one argued, as a proponent of Multikulti, for more of them, more cultures, or, as a monoculturalist, formerely better (more refined, more pure) Kultur and the value of adistinct German culture. The decision reached in 1991 to move thecapital from Bonn to Berlin as a means of unifying Germans also casta kind of Klieg light on Kultur, as the relocation itself drew manynew visitors, who, having only construction sites of the future capitalto view, spent the rest of their time enjoying Berlin’s numerous (oftenduplicate) cultural institutions and industries for the first time.2 At thisvery moment of general good will, inclusiveness, and prominence, these Berlin cultural institutions had the most to lose (or gain), asministers of the newly unified state promised more selective supportfollowing a round of rationalizations if not eliminations.

Abstract:
Poland is about to face social changes caused by a huge number of refugees and immigrants heading towards Europe. Not all of them come from societies whose culture is close to ours. The crisis of the peaceful idea of coexistence of cultures ((Multikulti) inspires us to analyse the European experience in the process of building integrated society and to draw conclusions. In this way we can avoid repeating some mistakes of other countries. In this situation, education must be a strong foundation of a state policy.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This synopsis discusses how and why Swedish art education ought to focus on teaching visual literacy from a glocal perspective. The aim is to position Swedish art education in a glocal, multi- and intercultural context. Searches were conducted mainly on LibSearch, as well as Google Scholar. Limitations were set to 2000, and peer-reviewed material only. Sources from Sweden, Europe and the USA, dealing directly or indirectly with visual literacy, were included. The results suggest that visual literacy may be taught through graphic novels, advertisements, public art, blogs and activities with peer-assessment. Critical multicultural pedagogy, visual rubrics and transparency in assessment processes are also suggested to strengthen visual literacy. It is concluded that visual literacy may aid students’ critical understanding and awareness of visual media in a multi-, intercultural and glocal visual world. To be visually literate may give them ability to critically participate in visual culture as democratic and empathic global citizens. Further research on how teachers and students use and understand visual literacies in Swedish art education is needed.
