An increasing percentage of post-consumer materials (PCR) is becoming more and more important in all processing methods in polymer technology, also due to the lack of raw materials and political demands. Very special requirements are placed on material properties such as viscosities in extrusion. Low viscosities and the presence of particles affect extrusion in a negative manner. In this study, the use of multilayer sheets is determined to both ensure extrudability and contribute to a significant improvement in surface qualities. The focus is placed on the influence of viscosity and particles

Multilayer packaging is one of the fastest growing areas. The reason for the high proportion of multilayer packaging is that the combination of different materials allows the creation of materials with individual properties at low material consumption. Abstract:
Thick multilayer coatings deposited by dc-magnetron sputtering cause an unacceptable level of stress-induced distortion in coated components. This is because all the dc-magnetron-sputtered films in our studies had a relatively high compressive stress. The compressive stress in sputtered films is due to bombardment of the growing film by energetic species. Previous studies have shown that the compressive stress of ion-beam-sputtered films was reduced by using post-deposition baking. This stress modification technique was used to reduce the compressive stress of dc-magnetron-sputtered single-and

Abstract:
The impulse response method is widely used for heat transfer analysis in turbomachinery applications. Traditionally, the 1D method assumes a linear time invariant, isotropic, semi-infinite block and does not accurately model the behaviour of laminated materials. This paper evaluates the error introduced by the single layer assumption and outlines the required modifications for multilayer analysis. The analytic solution for an N layer, semi-infinite laminate is presented. Adapted multilayer basis functions are derived for the impulse response method and used to evaluate the impact of uniform, i

Abstract:
At LLNL we are interested in increasing the damage threshold of optical coatings used in high power laser applications such as Inertial Confinement Fusion. The coating of particular interest is a highly reflective dielectric multilayer mirror (HR) consisting of many alternating quarter-wave layers of HfO2 and SiO2 at 1.06μm. Laser induced damage in optical coatings is often associated with structural defects in the films. In dielectric HR coatings the predominant surface defects are μm-scale domes associated with the classic nodule defect. The nodule shape is determined by shadowing effects du
