The deformation microstructures generated by nanoindentation of multilayer coatings consisting of TiSiN layers alternating with ten TiN interlayers, were examined by cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (XTEM). Local residual stress fields often influence and even govern some of the mechanical properties of multilayered coatings at nanoscale. An approach is developed for the evaluation of the local residual stress with the representative volume element (RVE) of a multilayered coating and the concept of lattice mismatch between neighboring layers, incorporating high-precision density functional theory calculations. The calculated results are in good agreement with experimental reports, even if each individual host constituent is assumed linearly elastic, demonstrating the validity of the proposed appr

Multi-element material coating systems have received much attention for improving the mechanical performance in industry. However, they are still focused on ternary systems and seldom beyond quaternary ones. High entropy alloy (HEA) bulk material and thin films are systems that are each comprised of at least five principal metal elements in equally matched proportions, and some of them are found possessing much higher strength than traditional alloys.
