Bulut, Berna. "Cross-layer design and evaluation of raptor codes for reliable and efficient multimedia content transmission over WLANs." Thesis, University of Bristol, 2015. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.691175.

Abstract:
The demand for multimedia applications is increasing and existing point-to-point data communication systems cannot meet the requirements for high data rate multimedia transmission. This leads to the introduction of more spectrally efficient point-to-multipoint services. However, efficiently transmitting large data to a heterogeneous and large receiver population over unreliable wireless channels requires sophisticated multi cast techniques. The aim of this thesis is to design and quantify the benefits of application layer solutions that provide end-to-end reliability for multicast WLAN transmission. To this end, a cross-layer design based on the latest RaptorQ (RQ) codes for transmitting high data rate video over the multiple input multiple output (MIMO) channels in realistic outdoor environments is presented. RQ code performance is investigated for spatial multiplexing (SM) systems. A detailed crosslayer simulator is used to define the optimum system parameters under different MIMO channel conditions. The channels are generated using a state-of-the-art 3D ray tracing tool and are used to evaluate performance in realistic outdoor environments. It is shown that with the use of Raptor codes there can be up to 10 dB improvement in the required signal to noise ratio (SNR) depending on the correlation between the MIMO channels. An adaptive MIMO technique is proposed that considers Raptor code application layer forward error correction (AL-FEC) in SM as a means to enhance reliability and transmission efficiency. The benefits of the proposed system are highlighted using a site specific case study. This thesis proposes a FEC carousel model based on Raptor codes for wireless multicast transmission over WLANs. Different carousel models, namely sequential and interleaved models, are designed and evaluated in realistic environments. It is shown that the interleaved carousel model provides a lower download time and superior coverage as compared to the sequential model. A complete system design methodology that enables the trade-off between user coverage, AP density and data download time to be managed in a complex real-world environment is presented. Furthermore, the proposed multicast carousel system is validated via experimental measurements. This thesis presents the first detailed analysis on the implementation ofRQ codes and data carousels in a practical Wi-Fi based server/client system. It is shown that system performance is mostly dominated by hardware and software limitations on constrained host platforms where the incoming packet rate exceeds the device's ability to consume the traffic. RQ parameters are evaluated through measurements. It is recommended to choose Raptor source block length K ::; 200 and symbol size T;::: 1000 bytes in order to provide a better quality of experience. Finaliy, an adaptive FEC carousel system, which provides reliable and scalable multicast transmissions over the IEEE 802.11 WLANs, based on Raptor codes is proposed. It is shown that the adaptive system significantly reduces the average download time, increases the percentage of satisfied users and effectively utilises the valuable radio and network resources in a multicast network with suitable design parameters.

Abstract:
The research investigated women’s participation in the Australian Digital Content Industry, which encompasses both multimedia and games production. The Digital Content Industry is an area of growing economic and social significance, both in Australia and internationally. Women are under-represented in core Digital Content Industry work but there has been little theoretical or empirical investigation of the underlying issues. This research identified a range of influences on women’s participation and provides a better understanding of this complex social phenomenon by proposing that influences should be understood from the perspective of agent-driven mechanisms. The key contribution is a new theory - the Acts of Agency Theory - which was used to discuss the phenomenon and issues underpinning women’s participation and to recommend strategies that should foster greater participation of women in the Digital Content Industry.

The written portion of this thesis work is meant to address and further investigate the visual work created using mediums of print and found video. This artistic research has been interested in examining varying associations with truth, recollection, and evidence. This includes the recollection of public histories and news-media narratives as well as my own history and trauma. Through this work my aim was to create a deconstruction and revolt against how associations are formed, and how to understand imagery as information. This thesis first discusses my relationship to appropriated imagery, then connects and examines it through the addition of poetic elements and events from my own lived experience.

Abstract:
Las Smart TVs, smartphones, tablets i consoles permeten als usuaris accedir a continguts de televisió i aplicacions interactives a través múltiples xarxes. The current diversity of internet-connected consumer devices enables an increasing variety of multimedia platforms for accessing audiovisual content, interactive services, games and all kind of user applications. The concept of digital TV is evolving from being an isolated unidirectional technology to become part of the ecosystem of services users consume in their multimedia home or nomadic environment. In this context, the convergence between interactive TV, Internet, and applications is a reality thanks to the family of smart devices that are available on the market. Smart TVs, smartphones, tablets, and game consoles allow users to access TV contents and interactive applications through multiple networks. The number of different application formats and runtime environments that currently enable interactive TV services hinders the portability of applications developed for those environments. The lack of a globally unified and accepted standard for the deployment of interactive contents on TV platforms requires the use of special techniques to adapt those contents from one platform to another. Interactive content producers can save both time and resources when developing the same content for different platforms. The main objective of this dissertation is the proposal and validation of a suitable methodology for the efficient generation and maintenance of cross-platform iTV applications, which allows the separation between the design process and its multiple implementations for different platforms. This thesis analyzes the current context of interactive TV and proposes a solution for generating “write once, adapt to anywhere” applications based on a portable content format for TV environments. The proposed methodology is validated through different application use cases that have been tested using the software framework developed in the course of this research. This includes the required modules for translating cross-platform descriptions into platform-specific iTV applications and an integrated development environment containing a visual editor for graphic user interfaces that stores the interface description in the portable content format. The study of multimedia content synchronization in web-based platforms generated a secondary contribution for the development of subtitling systems based on HTML5. This proposal takes advantage of SVG and SMIL for synchronizing customizable video subtitles across web platforms. It also enables to reduce considerably the code required by an application for managing time issues. The results of the user experience evaluation for the proposed subtitling system show that SMIL time features allow an efficient management of subtitles across different HTML5 platforms without losing the synchronization between the presentation components.

Abstract:
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior<br>Ubiquitous computing is known as the third wave of computing, which aims at making computational devices become more permeated to the users lives. It has helped people to perform their daily activities in many areas of expertise, especially in the educational domain where it assists instructors and students during their academic duties, achieving knowledge anywhere and anytime, making use of unobtrusive ways of reaching the desired content. Multimedia capture and context-awareness are two relevant subjects in ubiquitous computing research. While the former results in large amounts of digital media (e.g., video, audio, slides, text comments) being automatically produced, the latter oers the proper means to integrate and access such content. By merging the two concepts, users may benet from tools that allow them to retrieve, view and interact with the captured media artifacts. Thus, this work presents a communication model based on peer-to-peer networks, used for transferring and replicating the captured content. Furthermore, a contextual access architecture is presented for personalization and recommendation of interactive multimedia content captured in an instrumented educational environment. This architecture takes into account context information, user preferences and presentation constraints in order to personalize the access experience, tailoring it to users\' needs. As a case study, the proposals were implemented in Classroom eXperience, which is a ubiquitous computing platform for multimedia capturing designed to automatically record lectures and make them available to students.<br>Computação ubíqua é conhecida como a terceira onda da computação, a qual visa tornar os dispositivos computacionais mais integrados à vida das pessoas. Abstract:
Personalized communication is when the marketing message is adapted to each individual by using information from a databaseand utilizing it in the various, different media channels available today. That gives the marketer the possibility to create a campaign that cuts through today’s clutter of marketing messages and gets the recipients attention. PODi is a non-profit organization that was started with the aim of contributing knowledge in the field of digital printingtechnologies. They have created a database of case studies showing companies that have successfully implemented personalizedcommunication in their marketing campaigns. The purpose of the project was therefore to analyze PODi case studies with the main objective of finding out if/how successfully the PODi-cases have been and what made them so successful. To collect the data found in the PODi cases the authors did a content analysis with a sample size of 140 PODi cases from the year 2008 to 2010. The study was carried out by analyzing the cases' measurable ways of success: response rate, conversion rate, visited PURL (personalized URL:s) and ROI (Return On Investment). In order to find out if there were any relationships to be found between the measurable result and what type of industry, campaign objective and media vehicle that was used in the campaign, the authors put up different research uestions to explore that. After clustering and merging the collected data the results were found to be quite spread but shows that the averages of response rates, visited PURL and conversion rates were consistently very high. In the study the authors also collected and summarized what the companies themselves claim to be the reasons for success with their marketing campaigns. The resultshows that the creation of a personalized campaign is complex and dependent on many different variables. It is for instance ofgreat importance to have a well thought-out plan with the campaign and to have good data and insights about the customer in order to perform creative personalization. It is also important to make it easy for the recipient to reply, to use several media vehicles for multiple touch points and to have an attractive and clever design.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates student engagement in the Media and Communication Programme at Malmö University through the lens of audience- as well as learning theories. It has two main aims: Building a systematized theoretical framework to distinguish different nuances of audience activity in a cross-mediatic learning environment, and exploring factors influencing student engagement in our Media and Communication Master Programme (MCS). Constructivist Grounded Theory (Charmaz 2006) with a multi-method approach for data collection is applied to gather rich data and analyse it accordingly through coding processes and constant comparison. Following social constructivism, it argues that each student, actively constructing knowledge, has her own subjective learning preference. This thesis takes a non- normative stand on the subject. A matrix of audience activity, grounded in audience theories and developed through the collected data, is established. In a second step this is used to illustrate the concepts participation, engagement and collaboration and then further employed to examine factors influencing student engagement. Thereby, the matrix is tested, refined and further developed. Through this approach eight states a student might be situated in while studying as well as possible barriers for student engagement were identified. Factors influencing student engagement this study found are the personal situation of the student, the access Hyflex education allows, possibilities and challenges of physical and virtual learning spaces, the interaction between teachers and students, the structure of the programme and how students are connected with each other. By looking at student engagement in a media rich environment from an audience- as well as education-angle this thesis expands existing research. It presents influencing factors for student engagement. More importantly the theoretical model is a useful tool to investigate different kinds of student activities and to develop educational media tools. It could also be transferred to research other audiences.

Zhao, Jing. "Mobilizing the brand experience: The adoption and use of mobile media in building consumer relationships in China." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2011. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/48174/1/Jing_Zhao_Thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This research examines why and how brand owners in China adopt and use mobile media in marketing campaigns to deliver co-creation brand experiences and build consumer relationships. China represents an interesting case to study as it has leapfrogged into the age of consumer society and mobile media adoption. As the largest mobile market globally, it has experienced the intensity of mobile technology diffusion; and with it the rise of mobile consumer culture and participatory culture. Further, the rising individualism and the socio-cultural heritage in collectivism serve as a structuring tension in how mobile media is leveraged in marketing to cater to consumers' desires for individuality and social interaction. First, through expert interviews guided by the technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework (Tornatzky & Fleischer, 1990) as well as integrating innovation diffusion theory (E. Rogers, 2003), this research attempts to fill the gap of theoretical application in mobile marketing adoption at the firm level in China, and unravel the adoption factors of mobile marketing by brand owners in China. In total, 27 semi-structured interviews were conducted with key industry informants from mobile agencies, traditional agencies, venture capital firms, mobile content and service providers, mobile portals, and marketing management at brand owners. Second, based on case studies in China, this research investigates the use of mobile marketing to facilitate innovative co-creation of brand experience to cater to both individualistic as well as collective tendencies and desires amongst Chinese consumers. Through multiple case studies of the campaigns conducted by Nokia, Clean & Clear, and The North Face, and informed by in-depth interviews and document analysis, this research analyses the role of mobile media in marketing campaigns along three dimensions: the role of mobile media in content generation and consumption, the centrality of mobile media as text, tools or platforms; and the interactive environment. Specifically, the cases are organized along the spectrum from user-generated content to corporate-generated content, mobile media's role from being supplementary to it being central, and from a virtual environment to a hybrid environment. Overall, these cases demonstrate how brand owners adapt mobile media as text, tools, platforms, and environments to deliver co-creation brand experiences exploiting both individualistic as well as collective tendencies and desires amongst Chinese consumers. This research contributes to the literature on firm adoption of mobile marketing, and the role of the mobile media in facilitating co-creation experiences for Chinese consumers. It develops a model of the technological, organizational and environmental factors influencing mobile marketing adoption by firms, and provides a model explaining the role of mobile media in facilitating brand experience co-creation. The findings also demonstrate that mobile media can be leveraged to facilitate co-creation brand experience to generate added value; and meanwhile cater to both the rising individualism and the deep-seated collectivism of Chinese consumers. Empirically, it assists industry practitioners in understanding the adoption of mobile marketing in China, especially those on the supply side in order to improve their offerings and propositions. It also assists brand owners and agencies in designing their mobile marketing strategies to build consumer relationships in China.

The study aims to comprehend how these regimes of interaction and sense are organized in the automotive advertising through the practices that reveal and explicit, on one hand, the own statute of the new within the discourse and, on the other, the strategic communication choices of the enterprises. The object of the study is the advertising communication, being ads from the automotive industry in the last years propagated in several kinds of media our corpus of analysis. The theoretic referential is the discursive semiotics, developed from the postulations of A.J.Greimas and his collaborators, in special the sociosemiotics, that takes care of the social dimension of discourse, being considered on its recent developments disseminated in Brazil mainly through the Centro de Pesquisas Sociossemióticas (CPS). A major emphasis is put on semioticians that work with advertising and marketing, as Jean-Marie Floch, Andrea Semprini, Gianfranco Marrone and Ana Claudia de Oliveira, being the late works of Eric Landowski the basilar and essential references for approaching the regimes of interaction and sense. In spite of being an inflection of discontinuity in the communication, turning the before disforic and making the after positive, the excessive and recurrent presence of the new seems to tend it towards desemantization, being our hypothesis that the new operates, in its iteracy, much more such as a qualificator of permanence than of rupture. Even being pertinent and relevant for cross media and multimedia advertising, the manners of presence of the new analysis in the enunciator and in the enunciation clarifies that the regimes of interaction organized by the new structure paths of sense that always turn into the accident regime (interactions governed by the logic of randomness) and into the programming regime (interactions governed by the logic of regularity), both regimes where the sense of the new gradually disappears. In conclusion, it is possible to affirm that this permanence of the new, reinvigorated through the renewed figurative covering produced by the advertising discourse, has legitimated the interconnections through the whole (the brand) and the parties (the products) in the edification of identity simulacrum of the brand in the auto communication. We expect this work supports progressing the study of syncretism and interaction in the semiotics area and the cross media and multimedia in communication one, besides bringing together the semiotics and the marketing in order to build a more consistent and further vision in producing business communication strategies<br>O tema central deste trabalho resume-se no estudo da presença do novo na comunicação contemporânea e seus decorrentes regimes de interação e de sentido nos movimentos de continuidade e descontinuidade dos discursos publicitários, bem como seus impactos na construção, permanência e reelaboração das identidades das marcas administradas pelas empresas.

Abstract:
This study focuses on the factors shaping innovation in online newsrooms in three nations of the Arab World, with particular interest in the adoption of multimedia news innovations. Applying theoretical perspectives from the social shaping of technology and the diffusion of innovation literature, this study sought to identify the key factors shaping the innovation process. Field studies were based in three Arabic newsrooms: Aljazeera Net in Qatar, Almasry Alyoum in Egypt, and Almassae in Morocco. The case studies are grounded in two weeks of participant-observation field research within each online newsroom, along with over 100 in-depth interviews with those involved in the production of online news, and online archival reviews of the three news portals since their inception. Field research began with participant observation at Aljazeera in 2010, prior to the uprisings of the Arab Spring, and continued through early 2013. The political context of each newsroom during the field research became a major aspect of the innovation process of each case study. The thesis reinforces a wide range of social, economic, and organizational factors in the adoption and adaptation of multimedia technologies in the newsrooms studied, supporting earlier research on newsroom innovation across other regions of the world. For example, conceptions about ‘ideal’ industry multimedia models for the modern newsroom were important in each case. However, in the political context of events related to the Arab Spring, the overriding importance of the larger political context emerged in each case. The significance of this observation suggests that research on news organizations cannot take the political context for granted and should more explicitly embed it in discussion of the social shaping of innovation, even under more stable and liberal political conditions. There is a relative lack of systematic empirical research on Arabic newsrooms among studies of news innovation. Looking at the political context of emergent or weak democracies and their influence on modern multimedia newsrooms especially during crisis events, therefore, can contribute to the development of theory and research in Western democracies; and reintroduce politics into theories of innovation within modern newsrooms. This study suggests that future scholarship brings politics into the study of the social shaping of newsroom innovation without losing the many significant advances of existing research in more liberal democratic Western contexts of the multimedia newsroom.

<p>Purpose/Aim: The aim of this thesis was to examine how multi channel publishing in different stages effect the work for journalists.</p><p>Material/Method: The thesis is based on ten case studies selected from the literature and one conducted especially for this thesis. The case studies have been categorized according to a model that describes three strategies for multi channel publishing. The first strategy is to have a primary publishing channel, the second is to have separate editorial staffs for all publishing channels and the third is to treat all publishing channels equally.</p><p>Main results: Journalists working for companies using the first strategy have not experienced any major differences in working conditions or work practices. For journalists employed by companies using the second strategy for multi channel publishing the effects on the journalists was noticeable but not major. The effects on journalists in companies using the third strategy are mainly stress and an uncertainty regarding how to use special media techniques.</p>

Abstract:
This study is an investigation in and through media arts practice. It set out to develop a novel type of new media artistic praxis built upon concepts drawn from the disciplines of scientific and cultural ecology. The rationale for this research was based upon my observation as a practising new media artist that existing praxis in the new media domain appeared to operate largely without awareness of the ecological implications of those practices. The thesis begins by explaining key concepts of ecology, spanning the arts and the sciences. It then outlines the thinking of contemporary theorists who propose that the problem of ecology is a critical issue for the 21st century, suggesting that our well-documented ecological crisis is indicative of a more general crisis of human subjectivity. It then records an investigation into particular strategies for artistic praxis which might instigate an active engagement with this problem of ecology. The study employed a methodology based in action research to focus upon the development and analysis of three new artistic works, '#14', ' Public Relations' and 'transit lounge'. These were used to explore diverse theories of ecology and to hone a series of pointers towards Ecosophical arts/new media praxis. This journey constitutes an emergent theory for new media space design. The thesis concludes with a toolkit of tactics and approaches that other arts/new media practitioners might employ to begin working on the problem of ecology.

Geelan, Torsten Karl Rosenvold. "Trade unions and the media : exercising and revitalising power after the financial crisis of 2008." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2017. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/267819.

Full text
Abstract:
The Great Recession that followed the financial crisis of 2008 had a devastating impact on workers, leading to high levels of unemployment and underemployment, increased job insecurity and stagnant or declining wages. While the legitimation crisis of neoliberalism could be viewed as a turning point for labour internationally, the immediate response by political parties across the spectrum was one of austerity measures and cuts to welfare. As the largest collective representatives of workers, trade unions are at the forefront of mobilisations attempting to challenge this consensus. Simultaneously, they are engaging in new activities to enhance public awareness and understanding of the crucial role that trade unions play in the labour market. Thus, the 21st century crisis is creating both challenges and opportunities. Each trade union movement’s response depends on the different forms of power they possess and choose to deploy, their strategies and allegiances, and the specific socio-economic and political context in which they are situated. Questions concerning what constitutes union power and the ways in which it is being exercised and revitalized therefore represent fascinating lines of enquiry to explore. To do so, however, requires a new perspective on trade union power that recognises the significance of the media which has been overlooked in industrial relations theory. Drawing on insights from industrial relations, the sociology of media and social movement studies, this thesis proposes the concept of communicative power to trace how trade unions produce and circulate discourse through the media (either union-owned or corporate) to a mass audience. Methodologically, it uses the tripartite approach which focuses our attention onto three key communication processes involved in trade union attempts to exercise communicative power: the production of union discourse, the circulation of union discourse, and the reception of union discourse. This is applied to four cases involving seven union organisations in the UK and Denmark over a five-year period 2010-2015. Data was gathered using 40 semi-structured interviews with union officials and activists, content analysis of newspapers, union media outlets and social media, and secondary survey data. In sum, this thesis argues that the media is, and always has been, central to how trade unions exercise and revitalize power in society. And within the context of accelerating digital capitalism, it looks set to becoming an increasingly important determinant of their future trajectory.

Abstract:
Elections to the European Parliament are characterised by a steady decline in voter turnout. To tackle this problem, in 2014, several groups of the European Parliament nominated pan-European Spitzenkandidaten who were expected to personalise the elections and mobilise European voters. Based on this development, this study analyses the media cov-erage of the 2014 EP elections with special focus on the role of the Spitzenkandidaten. A quantitative content analysis of European election campaign coverage in the opinion leading newspapers of three influential EU member states, Ger-many, France, and the United Kingdom was carried out. The results show large candidate- and country-specific differ-ences regarding the visibility and thematic coverage of the EP elections in general as well as the presentation of the Spitzenkandidaten. The Spitzenkandidaten were not very visible in either the German, French, or British newspaper cov-erage. With respect to the presence and media personalisation of the Spitzenkandidaten, the newspaper coverage of the EP election does not demonstrate any mobilising effect and thus does not reflect the high expectations the European Parliament attributed to the nomination of the Spitzenkandidaten.

Abstract:
We studied close to 100 articles about the Swedish cup in cross country skiing, published by the three media outlets that cover the entire series; www.sweski.com , www.langd.se and www.skidzonen.com. The articles were published between 2015 and 2018 and by using a quantitative analysis we discovered that in these articles, the men and the women received almost exactly the same amount of attention, as far as counting words goes. In the articles which focused on both the female and the male athletes, the editors usually chose a picture from the women’s competition as the top image. We also saw a pattern where the women were far more often mentioned by their first names only, whereas the men were usually mentioned by their full names or their last names only. Another interesting theme that we found through a qualitative text analysis regarded how the athletes were portrayed in the articles, where the women seemed to be looked upon as less mature than the men. For example, they were often called “girls” instead of “women”, but the men the same age were never referred to as “boys”. These are seen by us as signs of trivialization and infantlization of the female athletes. However, we did not find any signs of the women being described as weak, or with a focus on their appearances and private lives. These were common patterns in the previous research on the subject.<br>Vi undersökte knappt 100 artiklar om den svenska cupen i längdskidåkning, publicerade av de tre medierna som bevakar hela serien; www.sweski.com , www.langd.se och www.skidzonen.com.

碩士<br>國立中央大學<br>資訊工程學系<br>101<br>The distribution of multimedia content involves the lawful rights of content owner and the economic value to the content provider, which there are lots of content protect issues around, such as preventing illegal copy and redistribution. And now the mobile device which has capability to play multimedia content becomes popular, and most of them have networking ability that allows them to access contents without computers. Accordingly, there were a few Digital Right Management system (DRM system) designed for mobile devices, yet the trade-off between performance and security exist in those previous studies. However, the capacity and capability of mobile device grows much wider, even dual-core CPU or quad-core CPU attaches on the devices, therefore, we aim on developing such a new designed DRM system on dual-core CPU devices with a high security and reasonable cost. We adopt a block cipher with manipulating the position of the file to enhance the security level; also we provide fast and accurate license verification by using RSA digital signature technique, and last, we expand the buffer reading size while decrypting and observe significant performance improvement in varying decryption settings.

Abstract:
No<br>Effective media server placement strategies are critical for the quality and cost of multimedia services. Existing studies have primarily focused on optimization-based algorithms to select server locations from a small pool of candidates based on the entire topological information and thus these algorithms are not scalable due to unavailability of the small pool of candidates and low-efficiency of gathering the topological information in large-scale networks. To overcome this limitation, a novel scalable framework called NetClust is proposed in this paper. NetClust takes advantage of the latest network coordinate technique to reduce the workloads when obtaining the global network information for server placement, adopts a new Kappa -means-clustering-based algorithm to select server locations and identify the optimal matching between clients and servers. The key contribution of this paper is that the proposed framework optimizes the trade-off between the service delay performance and the deployment cost under the constraints of client location distribution and the computing/storage/bandwidth capacity of each server simultaneously. To evaluate the performance of the proposed framework, a prototype system is developed and deployed in a real-world large-scale Internet. Experimental results demonstrate that 1) NetClust achieves the lower deployment cost and lower delay compared to the traditional server selection method; and 2) NetClust offers a practical and feasible solution for multimedia service providers.

Pitcher, Sandra. "The mass collaboration of digital information : an ethical examination of YouTube and intellectual property rights." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/565.

Full text
Abstract:
The Internet has been lauded as an open and free platform from which one is able to engage with, and share large amounts of information (Stallman, 1997). As one witnesses the shift from analogue media to digitalism, so too is it possible to note a change in cultural practices of media consumers. Users of the media can now be viewed as “prosumers”, producing as well as consuming media products (Marshall, 2004). Digital media users have been given the ability to engineer their own unique media experiences, especially within the realms of the Internet. However, this process has seemingly led to mass copyright infringement as Internet users appropriate various movies, music, television programmes, photographs and animations in order to create such an experience. The art of digital mashing in particular, has been deemed an explicit exploitation of intellectual property rights as it re-cuts, re-mixes and re-broadcasts popular media in a number of alternative ways. YouTube especially has been at the forefront of the copyright furore surrounding digital mash-ups because it allows online users the facility to post and share these video clips freely with other online users. While YouTube claims that they do not promote the illegal use of copyrighted material, they simultaneously acknowledge that they do not actively patrol that which is posted on their website. As such, copyright infringement appears seemingly rife as users share their own versions of popular media through the art of digital mashing. This dissertation however, explores the concept that the creation of mash-ups is not undermining intellectual property rights, but instead produces a new avenue from which culture can emerge. It highlights how Internet users are utilising the culture which surrounds them in an attempt to navigate the new social structures of the online, subsequently arguing that mash-ups are an important element of defining a new postmodern culture, and that the traditional copyright laws of analogue need to be modified in order to secure the development of new and emerging societal structures.<br>Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2010.

Abstract:
This report focuses on the topic of the current communications ecosystem which, through concepts such as convergence and multimedia on how contents are created and transmitted, through various mediums, have created cross-platform projects within the Communications Studies. Starting from the perspective that the Web still is the dominant platform, various communication mediums, especially traditional newspapers, have adapted to transmit their contents through websites, converging with other digital and physical traditional platforms making them a paradigm to other fields of study. In this report the project Quo Vadis Lisboa is presented and analyzed, through how this communication strategy was implemented through the publish of the information regarding 9 churches on the platforms of the project, a guidebook, leaflet, a flyer and a website. The purpose is to understand if the transmission of the contents was efficient taking advantage of the characteristics of each medium. It is concluded that while it is a pioneer project that is inspired by other cross-platform projects in traditional media, mainly in print media, with areas of improvement, this project is a starting point to the topic of content creation and display through different mediums in other subjects such as religious tourism.

Abstract:
This project consisted in the conception and development of a website focused on portuguese chefs, and foreign chefs working in Portugal, named Portugal Chefs. It is a website entirely thought by myself, due to my interest in the theme and also my belief that there is a gap in what concerns virtual sites promoting fine dining professionals for an international public, namely tourists that visit our country. The starting point of the project was the creation of a database which gathers the main successful chefs in Portugal - in activity, so they can be visited in their restaurants by the readers, and having the website the function of guiding the user towards the chef/restaurante he wants to know considering his location. The selection of chefs for the database was made based on my knowledge of the most awarded cuisine professionals and restaurantes, valued by the foodies and referenced in specialized and generalist media. From that point, the goal was to create a website with a design that is suitable to the cuisine theme, with a touch of luxury (as we are speaking of fine dining), and above all where the content is presented in a clear manner and is easily navigable and searchable. I also had the audience’s interaction with the project as a priority, that comes together with social media and the blog. Regarding the technical side, the website was developed using Adobe software, including Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver, and the programming languages HTML, CSS, PHP and MySQL.

Jovanov, Petar. "A cross-cultural and multimedia fractured Macedonian-Australian compositional voice." Thesis, 2014. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/uws:29765.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to explain my personal musical voice, illuminate creative intentions, shed developmental insight on the multi-media compositions, and argue for a fractured Macedonian-Australian voice that is expressed through these compositions as a multiple enrichment of personal Macedonian-Australian experiences. These processes work with film music orientated eclecticism, Macedonian folk music principles and image-fractured sound juxtapositions that are viewed from an imaginative thriller aesthetic lens to engage audiences and provide a fresh cross-cultural perspective. I consider that my multimedia compositions are underpinned by a personal creative voice that draws from my imagination and uses a wide scope of sonorities. The sonorities draw on the harmonic language of classic Hollywood film composer Bernard Herrmann, plus the eclectic structural juxtapositions of the more recent film work of Michael Giacchino. This voice is also embedded with the traditional Macedonian folk music that embellishes my Macedonian experience, and 1950s avant-garde techniques which express my Western educational experience in Australia. Through the thriller lens I see fresh perspectives which trigger my imagination to be sparked and developed cross-culturally within a multi-media dimension and visually-inspired pure music forms. This cross-cultural journey is explored in this thesis through my credo principles, the process in my creative practice, and an analysis that unpacks its techniques, and concludes with its aims of a fractured Macedonian-Australian voice. My credo principles drawn from my cross-cultural experience are, musically: Herrmannesque sonority, glocalized approached, traditional Macedonian techniques (additive meters, makams adaptations, and transformed timbres), avant-garde techniques (European UK extended techniques, New World Australian/Hollywood, fusion of avant-garde/Macedonian) juxtaposition, architectural musical design and added value. Donald Schön’s reflection-in-action process has provided me insight into indeterminate practice-based situations and an understanding of the collaborations required to realise the creative works. The thesis analyses the five works created within the scope of this doctorate, with five structural paradigms based on the thriller aesthetic. The Uzunoski Suite (2009) is analysed in terms of juxtaposition working with an accumulating architectural design; Macedonian Nightclub (2011) and Fragile Temnica (2014) for juxtaposition of structures working with atmospheric narrative and pure music forms; Strange Ways (2013) with juxtapositions derived from an abstract design; and The Water Vessel (2012) with juxtapositions operating within mutual narrative moving imagery form.

Abstract:
博士<br>國立臺灣大學<br>資訊網路與多媒體研究所<br>104<br>Social media have changed the world and our lives. Every day, millions of media data are uploaded to social-sharing websites. The goal of the research is to discover and summarize large amounts of media data from the emerging social media into information of interests. Our basic idea is to perform multi-modal learning for given data, leveraging user-contributed data from cross-domain social media. Specifically, given a photo, we intend to discover geographical information, people&apos;&apos;s description or comments, and events of interest, closely related to the photo. These information then can be used for various purposes, such as being a real-time guide for the tourists to improve the quality of tourism. As a result, this dissertation studies modern challenges of image location identification, image annotation, and event discovery, followed by presenting promising ways to conquer the challenges. For image location identification, most previous works directly integrated visual features and geo-tags of the given photos. The performance of the existing approaches, however, could be limited if the given photos were taken indoors, and/or their image contents contain a number of buildings in a close proximity. As a solution, this dissertation unifies visual features, geo-tags, and check-in data, and further presents an image cluster refinement approach, for image location identification. For image annotation, label propagation is widely used to annotate photos based on similarity graphs of photos, where most previous works focused on single-label propagation. Although performing multi-label propagation is expected to be more efficient for annotation than performing single-label propagation several times, performing multi-label propagation may increase the computational complexities. Further, sizes of image datasets continue to increase and thus increase the problem complexity. As a solution, this dissertation presents a scalable multi-label propagation leveraging the power of distributed computing. For event discovery, most previous works investigated a specific media stream. Potentially, mining multiple media streams is capable of achieving better performance than mining a media stream alone, but could be more challenging. As a solution, this dissertation presents a two-stage framework that combines a flow-based media dataset and check-in-based media dataset for events-of-interest discovery. Experimental results on real media datasets show the effectiveness of all of the proposed approaches. Finally, this dissertation provides some possible directions for future studies.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立高雄大學<br>金融管理學系碩士班<br>99<br>This paper examines the relationship between the information content of media coverage and the cross-section of stock returns by number of articles published in Taiwan news media database. We find not only that large stocks, value stocks, and high idiosyncratic volatility stocks earn more media reports, but also that stocks with high turnover, stocks with high institutional investor holding, and stocks with extreme returns are covered. Our empirical results indicate that stocks with no media coverage don’t earn higher returns than stocks with high media coverage even after controlling well-known risk factor and various firm characteristics. However, stocks with high media coverage have significant negative abnormal returns, and the effect also persists in different holding periods as long as one year. Therefore, we conjecture that significant negative abnormal returns stems from investor’s over-attention. Finally, our findings support that the excessive release of information content by media coverage brings investor’s over-attention, and the media effect has significant negative impact on the cross-section of stock returns.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立暨南國際大學<br>資訊工程學系<br>93<br>This thesis investigates the correlations between multimedia (particularly the speech and text) involved in language lectures in order to design an effective presentation mechanism for Web-based learning. The implicit temporal correlation between speech and text is the most important because it helps to negotiate supplementary lecture navigations like tele-pointer movement, lips-sync movement, and content scrolling. We propose a speech–text alignment framework, an iterative algorithm based on local alignment, to probe the many-to-one relations, not the one-to-one only. We show that our solution will be more practical for general language lectures, and that the algorithm’s time complexity conforms to the best possible cost, O(nm), without introducing additional computation. Besides, a simple heuristic detecting the speech structures based on the probed temporal correlations is also proposed in this thesis. The cross-media correlations are classified into implicit relation (retrieved by computing) and explicit relation (recorded during preprocessing stage). We show the feasibility to create the vivid presentation by exploiting implicit relation and artificially simulating some explicit media. We describe the spatial-to-temporal problems that any system may encounter when dealing with the many-to-one correlations. To facilitate the navigation of the integrated multimedia documents, we develop several visualization techniques for describing media correlations, including guidelines for speech-text correlations, visible-automatic scrolling, and level of details of timeline etc., to provide intuitive and easy-to-use random access mechanisms. We evaluate the performance of the analysis method and human perceptions of the synchronized presentation. The overall performance of the analysis method is that about 99.5% words analyzed are of temporal error within 0.5sec. And the subjective evaluation result shows that the synchronized presentation is highly acceptable for human beings.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立政治大學<br>資訊科學系碩士在職專班<br>104<br>In the past few years, digital humanities researchers in our school have collected a huge amount of social media text data about major public events such as elections, disasters, social movements from various sources, namely Twitter, Facebook, PTT, real-time news. These text data can reflect largely the opinions, emotion, and interaction state, of the network community at the time of major events, thus being considered as valuable research assets. However, due to the lack of a proper information retrieval tool, these researchers have not been able to launch any in-depth studies on these social media text data. Therefore, this thesis presents the design and implement an information retrieval system for these cross-media data sets based on the popular search engine, Elasticsearch. Our system first preprocesses the data and meta-data of these social media texts into a unified yet flexible data schema before building their indices in a way that users can search the full text from both the data proper and various meta-data attributes such as date of publication and authors. We also provide some visualization aid to display the search results in a user-friendly manner. Overall, our system serves as a good tool for researchers to explore the social media text data from various sources in an easy yet effectively way.
