With the explosive growth of various multimedia contents, digital archives are used to store those contents accordingly. In contrast to the traditional storage systems in which data lifetime is measured in months or years, data lifetime in the archive is measured in decades. Since June of 1993, the Geography Department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has been engaged in a research project to develop the Archive of Native American Maps on CD-ROM. A major component of this project involves the creation of high-resolution scans of the maps in the archive.
