Abstract:

This Master Thesis presents the design of the core of a fixed point general purpose multimedia DSP processor (MDSP) and its instruction set. This processor employs parallel processing techniques and specialized addressing models to speed up the processing of multimedia applications.

The MDSP has a dual MAC structure with one enhanced MAC that provides a SIMD, Single Instruction Multiple Data, unit consisting of four parallel data paths that are optimized for accelerating multimedia applications. The SIMD unit performs four multimedia- oriented 16- bit operations every clock cycle. This accelerates computationally intensive procedures such as video and audio decoding. The MDSP uses a memory bank of four memories to provide multiple accesses of source data each clock cycle.

Fenley, Sue. "Navigational patterns in interactive multimedia." Thesis, Open University, 2006. http://oro.open.ac.uk/56471/.

Full text
Abstract:
The central purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether users have distinct preferences for specific navigational patterns in multimedia: that is preferences for moving through multimedia. Subsidiary questions are whether users have preferences for working strategies, (the mental approach to investigating software) whether these preferences are similar for specific groups and whether these preferences are affected by the software's system and navigational design. Four groups were investigated within two ranges: children to adults, and novices to experts. The literature review revealed four different perspectives of investigating navigation: user, designer, pedagogy and human computer interaction and although this research concentrates on the first two perspectives the other two are integral and of equal importance. Two empirical studies elicited the navigational information. The first studied pairs of children undertaking set tasks in multimedia, and demonstrated that although each pair had definite preferences, each group did not utilise the full pattern range discerned from the observations, literature review and multimedia package analysis. The second study was redesigned using individual adults to ascertain the full range of preferred patterns in use. The essential element from the investigations was the wide range of variation between individuals and within groups. There was a gradual progression in their range and speed using these patterns, related to their skills, abilities and experience, and each individual could be placed along a continuum. Topologies of the multimedia packages and diagrams of the fit of the navigation patterns were included. Finally an expert panel was convened to verify the pattern range and their comments supported the new classification. The research outcomes included navigational patterns and working strategies classifications, future techniques for designers, and user methods. These will create more successful and informed multimedia, and forward developments and improvements in the design of high quality user preference software.

Abstract:

Yankopolus, Andreas George. "Adaptive Error Control for Wireless Multimedia." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/5237.

Full text
Abstract:
Future wireless networks will be required to support multimedia traffic in addition to traditional best-effort network services. Supporting multimedia traffic on wired networks presents a large number of design problems, particularly for networks that run connectionless data transport protocols such as the TCP/IP protocol suite. These problems are magnified for wireless links, as the quality of such links varies widely and uncontrollably. This dissertation presents new tools developed for the design and realization of wireless networks including, for the first time, analytical channel models for predicting the efficacy of error control codes, interleaving schemes, and signalling protocols, and several novel algorithms for matching and adapting system parameters (such as error control and frame length) to time-varying channels and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the provision of multimedia services (involving voice, video, text and graphics) in an office environment. The office of the future is expected to comprise a heterogeneous collection of workstations and multimedia components (including fileservers, voice and video codecs, document scanners, laser printers, etc) interlinked by a high speed (digital) local area network. Every office is likely to have one or more connections to a public Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) providing integrated access (involving various types of traffic) to a very large number of subscribers. This thesis considers general issues relating to the design of such an office. Particular attention is given to the problem of the integration of media both at the network and user levels. Much of this discussion draws on practical experience gained during the Alvey Unison Project in which experimental multimedia offices were interconnected using a pilot ISDN. The architecture of the Unison network is discussed with particular reference to its suitability for the support of multimedia services. The bulk of this thesis is devoted to a description of the design and implementation of a number of prototype multimedia applications, and to an evaluation of their performance over the network. The handling of slow-scan video and high resolution images have been particular areas 01 interest. Much emphasis is placed on the problem of control in a distributed environment, and a model is presented for the management of control based on the use of a directory-like service. This model also provides a mechanism for locating an office service based on the name of the user to whom it belongs.

Abstract:
The semiconductor industry has seen a paradigm shift from Application Specific Integrated Circuits to Multiprocessor System on Chip systems over the last decade, primarily due to the miniaturization of the transistor. However, billion of transistors available on a single chip need to be used efficiently to provide more functionalities in portable devices, yet minimize power and chip area, which increases the design complexity of multiprocessor systems. Tighter time to market deadlines further pressurizes the designer, requiring a comprehensive automation of the design process of such complex multiprocessor systems. This thesis presents a design automation methodology for the design of Multiprocessor System on Chip (MPSoC) systems for multimedia applications. This thesis introduces a heterogeneous multiprocessor system where processing elements are connected in a pipelined fashion. A multimedia application is executed very efficiently on a pipelined system due to the stream oriented data flow nature of such applications. Application Specific Instruction set Processors (ASIPs) are used as the elementary processing elements in the multiprocessor system as they can be customized according to the application tasks assigned to them. The problem of selecting a processor configuration for each of the ASIPs in the pipelined system is formalized. We present three different techniques to select processor configurations by exploring the design space of an ASIP based pipelined system, and integrating them into a flexible and designer driven design flow for efficient exploration of large design spaces in order of 10^16 design points. The first two techniques are based on Integer Linear Programming (ILP), named Exact ILP formulation (EIF) and Reduced ILP formulation (RIF), while the third technique is based on a novel heuristic. We also developed a design space pruning algorithm that can enable the use of EIF and RIF to obtain optimal or near optimal design points from large design spaces. For four multimedia applications, we show that RIF and the heuristic can explore the design space and reveal the Pareto front in several hours, while EIF took several days to obtain the Pareto front. The quick availability of the Pareto front of a design space will help the designer to make early changes in the design. Furthermore, it is shown that, on average, the error incurred by RIF and the heuristic is within 1.25% and 2.25% of the optimal design points obtained via EIF for all the four multimedia applications. In the worst case, RIF introduced an error of 17.08% while the heuristic had an error of 11.39%.

Abstract:
Internet Protocol multimedia subsystem (IMS) is an architecture for services such as voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) in IP based communication systems. IMS is standardized by the 3GPP standardization forum, and was first released in 2002. Since then IMS has not had the wide adoption by operators as first anticipated. As 3G already supported voice and video, the operators could not justify the expense of IMS. The current emergence of the fourth generation mobile communication system named Long Term Evolution (LTE) has, however, increased the need for knowledge of IMS and of creating services for it. LTE networks are IP only networks that provide low latency. In order to use LTE for making phone calls, VoIP technologies are needed. IMS is the architecture intended to be used for Voice over LTE (VoLTE). The need for tools for education within IMS was seen in 2006 by Enea Experts in Linköping, Sweden. The author of this thesis designed an IMS for educational purposes, but the project was never fully completed. This thesis will reexamine the design decisions previously made by the author. The requirements stated by the customer remain: that an IMS with basic signaling and logging should be easy to install, maintain, and evolve at a low cost. A literature study of IMS and VoLTE is presented to contribute with knowledge in these areas. The previous design and implementation made by the author is presented and analyzed. The third-party software that the previous implementation was based on is reexamined. Existing open source components are analyzed in order to identify how they can be used to solve the problem and to identify what remains to be developed in order to fulfill the requirements. New design suggestions, presented in today´s context, are proposed and verified using analytical reasoning and experiments. The outcome of the final work is new verified design decisions for the customer to use when implementing a new IMS for educational purposes. The thesis should also provide useful insights which instructors and students can use to teach and learn more about IMS.

In order to support a variety of situations in which students might seek additional prototyping support during project work, resources were designed to utilize a combination of photo and video formats. Annotated images are used to introduce technical language, comprehensive narrated videos are used to show prototyping equipment operation, and short looping animations are used to show detailed steps of prototyping techniques. Providing students with multiple media formats allowed them to choose which resources best suited their support needs. This platform was tested in two product design courses: 2.00b Toy Product Design, an introductory product design course taken mostly by freshman, and 2.744 Product Design, a skills-focused course taken mostly by graduate students. In 2.00b, students complete project work with significant staff supervision, whereas most of the project work in 2.744 is unsupervised. For this reason, testing in these courses provided an opportunity to evaluate the platform in course settings with different supervision models. Usage data showed that around half of the students in each course exhibited activity on the platform, with a core group of 24 students (27% of the student population) in 2.00b and 28 students (35% of the student population) in 2.744 contributing most of the platform activity. To characterize student use of the platform, use case descriptions were collected from students during interview sessions with both 2.744 students (n = 10) and 2.00b students (n = 9). Students cited using the platform to support planning prototypes, for preparing to work in the shop space, for exploring the landscape of available tools and techniques afforded through access to the workshop, and to directly support the execution of prototypes in the workshop. Course staff members had activity on the platform comparable to student activity, and used Designy to prepare for advising students on project work and as a source of multimedia resources for preparing lecture materials. Overall, providing the platform to students removed typical roadblocks to prototyping work, such as limited access to staff and difficulty operationalizing prototyping techniques learned through other means. Although some students prefer support of prototyping efforts through face-to-face interactions, Designy was found to contribute to student feelings of increased confidence and comfort while in the workshop, allowing students to work more efficiently and progress their project work further than if they did not have access to the platform.

Abstract:
Multimedia (MM) Applications currently suffer from an ad hoc development process. This places the usability and effectiveness of many MM products in doubt. This thesis develops a theoretically motivated design method and tools to address these problems. The thesis is based on an analysis of the cognitive processes of attending to and comprehending an MM presentation. A design method is then developed based on these cognitive processes. The method addressesth e problem of selecting media to presenting information requirements,h ow to design the media to effectively deliver the desired content, how to combine verbal and visual media successfully, and how to direct the user's attention to particular part of the presentation. A number of studies are then presented which provide validation for the method's claims. These include eye tracking to analyse the user's reading / viewing sequence, and tests of expert and novice recall of MM and conventional text / speech presentations. A set of re-authoring studies show that application of guidelines improves retention of the content. The method is supported by a design advisor authoring tool. The tool applies the guidelines using a combination of a critiquer and expert system. The tool demonstrates that the guidelines are tractable for implementation, and provides a novel approach to providing authoring advice. Both the method and the tool are also validated in case studies with novice users. These demonstrate that the method and tool are both usable and effective.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution unlimited.
Current conventional Database Management Systems (DBMS) manage only alphanumeric data. However, data to be stored in the future is expected to include some multimedia form, such as images, graphics, sounds or signals. The structure and the semantics of the media data and the operations on that data are complex. It is not clear what requirements are needed in a DBMS to manage this kind of data. It is also not clear what is needed in the data model to support this kind of data; nor what the user interface should be for such a system. The goal of the Multimedia Database Management System project in the computer science department of the Naval Post Graduate School is to build into a Database Management System (DBMS) the capability to manage multimedia data, as well as the formatted data, and define operations on multimedia data. This thesis, focusing only on the media data of image and sound, first describes the operations of such a system, then discusses the general design of it, and finally outline the detailed design and implementation of the retrieval operation.

Abstract:
The ambitions of the teacher to fully prepare engineering students for the working environment are usually limited by the length of the lecture course. Consequently, few opportunities exist in the learning process for the student to gain experience in both design and design-optimisation. This document describes a suite of integrated personal computer based programmes designed to illustrate many important aspects of gas turbine component design and overall performance estimation for use both inside and outside the classroom. Accordingly, the objectives of the programmes are to provide a broad understanding of the whole engine and its major components by enabling the following: o a rapid and in depth method for the assessment of design point, off design and deteriorated performance principles for a wide range of gas turbine types and applications. a demonstration of the needs and implications of performance compromise arising from design constraints. a demonstration of how the design and performance limitations imposed by one component influence others. a demonstration of the design compromises required by the interactions between the disciplines of aerodynamics, thermodynamics and mechanical integrity. O O O When used in conjunction with a programme of lectures, tutorials, case studies, and computer based workshops, the new software enables a rapid and in depth understanding of gas turbine performance and component design. ln addition, the programme suite has extensive general application to gas turbine overall performance assessment and to the preliminary design of compressors and turbines.

In the development of multimedia, multimedia presentation system is an important part. It is an important issue that how to play multimedia resources smoothly in the system. In the context, I will introduce a system --- Multimedia Abstract Machine and describe one of important functions --- Multimedia Presentation Design Machine. I construct the algorithm of system kernel based on the Timed Petri Net. In the system, it provides the function of dynamical process except for playing multimedia objects by timschedule. This mechanism can enhance the flexibility of system. The system will provide a friendly user interface with many tools and multimedia presentation designer can design his/her presentation schedule in a better environment. Users can analysis and organize their presentation example using the system. By the chart of multimedia presentation, a designer can understand the executing performance of presentation in the system and modify any multimedia object in the schedule. The one of important features is including the concepts of software engineering. In designing level, the system organization is a structural module with independent levels. For the reason, the system development has a long extension. In system maintenance, the system can resolve various data type of multimedia resource using the method of software metrics and testing of software engineering. The approach can enhance the system structure and system performance. The system operation is based on the timed Petri net. Consequently, it provides a large area in the low level. About multimedia resource conflict, asynchronous or synchronous control and user interrupt, the system has feasible research field in the theory or implement. In my paper, they will be introduced step by step about basic concepts, system algorithm and system interface.

For the last decade, due to rising Multimedia System, people present their idea by multimedia system. Many companies developed the multimedia presentation design system to support this potential market. In this multimedia presentation design system, most of them only can design a fixed presentation flow or a simple flow control corresponding to user''s interactions. All designed presentations that designed by the same system are alike. We propose this intelligent multimedia system design system to extend functionality of multimedia presentation design system. In this thesis, we designed an intelligent multimedia presentation system on Windows environment. The system provides designer some tools to design his/her presentation: The presentation will works according designer''s discipline. In order to correct presentation flow, there is a specification language for describing all behavior of the presentation: a presentation is written in this language. The system uses a small rule-based knowledge base to store all rules of the presentation and fact of user''s response. The prolog language plays the role of inference. Considering multimedia resource selection, we also designed a simple interface for selecting multimedia from database. In design environment, we developed a visual environment for simplicity of layout.Developing this intelligent multimedia presentation system, we expect it not only provides an excellent multimedia presentation also a reasonable presentation flow control. We also expect this system can bring CAI a little help in designing a multimedia presentation according student''s grade.

Improvements in the semiconductor technology has allowed for increased power, thus personal computers can offer higher performances in their desktop applications. A recent confluence of hardware and software technologies has given computers the ability to process dynamic media data, and multimedia workloads such as MPEG-2 video player, 3D graphics and animations will occupy a large portion of the computer workload. While the processor speed raises rapidly, CPU-DRAM performance gap is still widening. On the other hand, the required memory bandwidth for multimedia workloads is more critical than that for desktop workloads, which aggravates the problem. The memory system design used today is optimized for numerical workloads, which stalls the overall performance increase. Although the set-associative cache with LRU replacement strategy yields a good performance on numerical applications, other cache schemes must be evaluated under multimedia applications to further improve the cache performance. This thesis will focus on designing the memory system to suit multimedia workloads, while still preserving the performance for numerical applications. In this thesis, the characteristics of multimedia applications will be presented. Then two modified cache schemes are proposed, and the performances are evaluated using program-driven simulation.

Multimedia plays an important role in our life. It communicates messages and ideas using a combination of text, audio, image, animation and video, and delivers easily understandable and much more fascinating materials than pure text. As multimedia and internet technologies are advanced, the applications of multimedia to the product presentation and education training are getting popular. Multimedia education makes effective interaction, active engagement and convenient learning plausible, and promote education to a higher level. In this thesis, a multimedia searching system of image and speech is developed. Both mobile phone and camera are used for painting image capture, and microphone is used for speech recording. The system will respond the complete information about the painting or the speaker after correct image or speech recognition. For painting recognition, the image from mobile phone or camera is first preprocessed, segmented and scale normalized. Then, YCbCr color model, projection features and local binary pattern are utilized for feature extraction. The nearest similarity between the testing and the training image is calculated to obtain the final answer. Using mobile phone and camera as the testing image capture devices, recognition rates of 92.06% and 90.07% can be reached respectively for the 20,160 paintings'' system under the Intel Core i5 2.6 GHz laptop and Windows 7 operating system environment. For speaker recognition, Mel frequency cepstrum coefficients are applied as the feature parameters, and a Gaussian mixture model for each speaker is established using 40 second training material. Using 10 second testing material at different times and locations, a correct speaker recognition rate of 83.4% can be obtained for the 2,000 speakers'' system under the Intel Core i5-3337U 1.8 GHz personal computer and Ubuntu 14.04 operating system environment.

In recent years, the applications of multimedia have widely appeared in ourdaily lives, for instance, GPS navigation systems, cellar phones and electronicbooks. You can easily spot multimedia applications everywhere. The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the design of embedded hardware-software systems based on commonly-used ARM microcontrollers and through the application of multimedia. In terms of hardware, pulse-width modulation (PWM) was employed to replace digital-to-analog converter (DAC) output. For software, an underlying SD card process was developed and integrated with the FAT file system, which enables rapid file storage when developing an embedded system. The encoding and decoding process of pulse-code modulation (PCM) is used in playing WAVE music files. In addition, by playing MP3 music files we can understand the encoding and decoding process of music compression.
