Abstract:
With the increased availability and use of information and communication tools in education, multimedia courseware design has gained the attention of instructors and multimedia developers in a bid to foster student learning. However, there is still scanty literature with regard to how user interface design of multimedia course environments fosters student learning process. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions students at a Higher learning institution in Malaysia on how user interface design fosters their learning process in multimedia courseware. This study adopted a qualitative design with semi-structured interviews as the data collection tool. Two postgraduate students participated in the in-depth interviews after learning from a multimedia module on how to use Excel software. Thematic analysis was used to derive meaning from students’ experiences with the learning courseware. From the interviews, it was found that the nature and usability of the interface design of multimedia courseware influences learning motivation, interactivity and cognitive load. The participants however identified software and hardware issues as the key challenges in using the multimedia courseware. Suggestions on how to improve future multimedia courseware were also noted. This research contributes to the area of E-learning by highlighting the need to design multimedia courseware interfaces that enhance student learning motivation, manage cognitive load and foster interactivity. It is thus recommended that further studies be carried on larger samples, using other research approaches and designs to allow for generalisability of the research findings on user interface design and learning process in multimedia courseware environment.

Abstract:
With some modification, the traditional system development life cycle (SDLC) can be used for developing interactive multimedia instructional (IMI) applications. The new model, referred to in this article as the instructional system development life cycle (ISDLC), can be used to help guide the multimedia instructional developer through the process of designing, developing, and maintaining highly effective IMI applications. However, before designing and developing an IMI application, several types of pre-design analyses should take place to help ensure a pedagogically effective design. These analyses include a client request analysis, a task/concept analysis, an audience analysis, an objectives analysis, a constraints analysis, and a costs/benefits analysis. The purpose of this article is to describe these various types of analyses and where they fit within the ISDLC.

Abstract:
Responsive Multithreaded (RMT) Processor is designed for distributed real-time systems. This paper focuses on the multimedia processing architecture of RMT Processor. Multimedia processing requires high-throughput calculation for bulky data processing. RMT Processor architecture is based on eight-way prioritized simultaneous multithreading, which executes each thread in order of priority. Since the priority of hard real-time threads is higher than that of multimedia processing threads, instruction issue slots used by the multimedia processing threads are few in RMT Processor when hard real-time threads are executed simultaneously. Therefore multimedia processing threads need to utilize instruction issue slots effectively to achieve high performance. We have designed a novel vector operation mechanism to process multimedia data efficiently in parallel. Because the same instructions are iterated in multimedia processing, the compound operation mechanism is designed to calculate more data per instruction in multimedia processing.

Learning resource allocation is mainly to expand English learning materials from the traditional printed resources to audios, videos, animations and other forms of resources; the use of multimedia resources for teaching activities is achieved mainly through the English speech teaching and lecturing device designed with the function of playing multimedia files. In order to test the application effect of multimedia technology in English teaching, this paper chose the public course of “Vocational English” as the experimental content, and compared the effect of respectively using multimedia technology to teach freshmen of Grade 2016 and adopting the traditional teaching method to teach students of Grade 2015. The outcome shows that the use of multimedia technology in English teaching can improve students’ interest in learning, reduce their pressure of learning English, and enhance their sense of accomplishment in learning, indicating that multimedia-assisted teaching can effectively improve English teaching results.
