Abstract:
This paper takes the position that creativity can be enhanced by multimedia. Computer software was designed and a study was conducted to measure that proposition. The author used participant self-analysis as a means to gather data on creativity enhancement holding to the presupposition that people can tell when they are creative and when their creativity is inhibited. The results of the study supported the belief that multimedia and the software designed for that purpose was able to enhance creativity.

Abstract: Engineering is seen today as a synonym of Innovation, in special for providing technological solutions that affect not only daily work and entertainment, but education as well. Project portfolio management of multimedia production and use emerges today as a challenge both for the enrichment of traditional classroom based teaching and for distance education offering. In this way, this thesis intends to answer the following question: "Which are the fundamental aspects to be considered in the management of projects on educational multimedia production and use?" A possible solution for the central question mentioned above is expressed by the following proposition: "A scientifically studied set of management tools and techniques may be identified as a central element to be considered in the management of projects of multimedia production and/or use, in this way increasing the success odds of educational projects." As a consequence, this research presents a proposal of a project management model for digital content production and use. The model, the methodology and the implementation will be named EduPMO, an abbreviation of "Educational Project Management Office". Therefore, the model, the methodology and the implementation should be understood as related but independent entities.
Doutorado
Eletrônica, Microeletrônica e Optoeletrônica
Doutor em Engenharia Elétrica

The research developed to achieve this goal was based on the interactive models of text processing (CARRELL, 1988; ADAMS, 1979; among others) and on the studies of the effects of vocabulary (PERFETTI; HOGABOAM, 1975; ADAMS, 1979; MASSARO, 1975; JENKINS, 1974; and ANDERSON; FREEBODY, 1985; among others) and on the role glossaries play (YANGUAS,2009; DAVIS,1989; BOWLES, 2004; CHUN; PLASS,1996; AL-SEGHAYER,2001) in text comprehension. The participants of this study were English learners at the pre-intermediate level of language proficiency. These participants were split into two groups, and each group was assigned the task of reading two different texts. There were two versions of each text: one version in which a glossary of some words in the text was inserted, and another version with no glossary. Each group read one text in one these versions, for example, one text with the insertion of glossary, and the other text in the other version, without a glossary for example. After reading each text, the participants had to answer 3 (three) questions concerning the recognition of 3 (three) different words, 3 (three) questions concerning the translation of other 3 (three) words, and 3 (three) questions on the comprehension of the main ideas in the text. Results indicate that, when learners are exposed to any type of multimedia glossary while reading a text, they perform better in recognizing target words and in producing them. Nevertheless, results were inconclusive as to the role multimedia glossaries play in the comprehension of main ideas of a text. It was also observed that multimedia glossaries, which included some kind of illustration, either alone or along with a text, were more effective in contributing to a better performance in the recognition and production of target words. Although no generalizations concerning the results of this study can be made due to its small sample size and the lack of statistical treatment applied to the data, it can add to other studies concerning the role of vocabulary on understanding a text in a second/foreign language, even if the results do not support the hypothesis that lexical knowledge is the key factor for efficient reading in a second language.

Abstract:
It is easier today to offer in one informative document many sources of information presented in different formats. Presenting various media can bring benefits in terms of learning performance, but dealing effectively with these different sources of information is complex. Therefore, offering documents guiding the learner when he is reading may be necessary to promote the construction of a qualitative mental model. Empirical studies that are conducted during this thesis endeavour to determine which formats are most effective while gradually increasing guidance within the document. Thus, four items are tested: the position of the picture relative to the text, the effect of the instructions, the text segmentation and the introduction of a guidance through a figure-ground contrast. Moreover, in order to bring new elements of reflection about how people explore an informative document and the impact of these strategies on performance, the eye movements of the learners were recorded. The results showed that changes in the format of information have an impact on the strategies of consultation of the document, including the increasing eye transitions between texts and illustrations. However, only the segmentation of the text in the form of semantic paragraphs brought benefits in terms of understanding

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to present new methods of active and passive vibration control for flexible structures. The study includes: 1) passive viscoelastic damping treatment; 2 ) active vibration control using layered shape memory alloy (SMA); 3) combined application of viscoelastic damping treatment and SMA; 4) experiments. In order to maximize damping and save weight of the structure and cost, a partially covered double sandwich cantilever beam model has been presented. It is shown that the double sandwich beam is better than single sandwich beam for some conditions. To take into account of end loads effect of elastic structures such as robot arm or manipulator, a model of partially covered double sandwich cantilever beam with mass at free end is given and discussed. Also a more accurate model (Timoshenko model) is discussed. The experiments were done to verify the theoretical results. The active vibration control by means of layered shape memory alloy actuator is discussed. The layered structure is easy to implement in real application, especially for the existing structures. The control results are compared and discussed. The temperature effects are discussed. Also a model with combined application of viscoelastic damping treatment and shape memory alloy layer is presented. Both the vibration characteristics and control results are obtained and discussed. The vibration control results for different control schemes are compared and discussed. The temperature effects are also discussed

To achieve this, questions that involve the net creation, the Umwelt concept and aesthetics experience are tackled. To reach the process itself, models and different creation stages are proposed to develop a methodology from the study of phases. It pursuits to use a whole basis to analyse the process, since that creation cannot be understood as being linear and also there are oscillations during the works elaboration, in a continuous net of influences as much objective as subjective exchanges. The documents of the process of the art group SCIArts are used, as declarations of the members in dialog with specialists of various areas. As bibliographic reference, the reflection is based upon the studies of Salles, Shustermann, Dewey, Uexküll, Lévy, Laurentiz and artists such as Oiticica and Duchamp, since the research has a multidisciplinary domain. It perceives the process and appraises how the group struggle with questions that appear during the art-making and that modifies the work in progress. This essay is within the field of aesthetic technology, especially at installation-based art domain, works developed by the mentioned collective. Is intended to evaluate the relations between technologies and the creative process and also to reach part of the complexity of the collaborative and multidisciplinary art-making

Abstract:
Sonic Activation is a multimedia performance-installation featuring sound sculptures, video projections, and performance with live electronics for solo and mixed ensembles. The work aims to unpack the nature in which we hear and interact with sound, space, and gesture. It is a project that recontextualizes the typical practice of performance and installation modes of music and art. The event uses 12 loudspeakers spaced around a gallery to create a densely layered sonic atmosphere that gently fluctuates and slowly evolves. Throughout the event, the audience is encouraged to freely navigate the gallery and experience the subtle changes in sound as they manifest in the space.

Full text
Abstract:
EthnoQuest, an interactive multimedia CD-ROM simulating a visit to a fictional village named Amopan, was conceived as an adjunct to college-level classroom instruction in introductory anthropology courses. Since these classes typically involve large numbers of students, the logistics on conducting actual fieldwork pose serious problems for instructors and students alike. The conception of an engaging, interactive, accessible learning tool that incorporates appropriate pedagogical principles has found its ultimate expression in EthnoQuest.

Abstract:
A well-educated citizenry, armed with an awareness of science and technological principles, is vital to the success of our society. In order to keep the public interested in scientific topics, it is important that students become engaged with science in their younger years. Interactive media technology provides a means to achieving this goal by developing students\' investigative abilities. Creation and use of interactive media technology is an essential step toward bridging these two imperatives: the need to connect students with science topics in order to pique and maintain interest in these areas, while also maintaining a relevance and engagement with current modes of information exchange.
