Abstract:
Multimedia information has been extensively growing from a variety of sources such as cameras or video recorders. In order to select the useful multimedia objects, multimedia recommender system has been emerging as a tool to help users choose which multimedia objects might be interesting for them. However, given the complexity of multimedia objects, it is challenging to provide effective multimedia recommendations. In this paper, we therefore conduct a survey in both the multimedia information system and recommender system communities. We further focus on the works that span the two communities, especially the research on multimedia recommender systems. Based on our review, we propose a set of research challenges, which can be used to implicate the future research directions for multimedia recommender systems. For each research challenge, we have also provided the insights of how to perform the follow-up research.

Abstract:
I present the dissertation web as a montage of a postmodern inquiry of my doctoral internship and research experiences—concerns and jubilation—positioned within the discourses of postmodern, dissertation, academia, experimentalism and cyberspace innovations among others. I create a social constructionistic interactive interplay, using hypertext, among my various voices of an intern, a researcher and a person. In the dissertation web—my inquiry—I practice the characterization of postmodernism on numerous fronts—subject of study, context of study, methodology and re-presentation of the inquiry. Implicitly and explicitly, I articulate the various characterizations of postmodernism in my inquiry by challenging the traditional research practices (metanarratives). I challenge the traditional praxis by alternate performances of research practices such as studying myself in a cultural context of an internship using the methodology of autoethnography and performance. The hypertext docuverse is a further characterization of postmodernism in the styles and structures that are used for re-presentation of the narratives. The styles of narration I useâ such as words and graphics, prose and poetry, first person conversational texts, narratives and collages—blur the boundary of "academic" writing, literature, and art. The hypertext is intended as a metaphorical experiential, intertextual journey of an intern and a researcher. Rather than a fixed structure, I create numerous structures of possible structures to privilege the readers' navigational choices. I anticipate that the reader's choices in the virtual space might create a sense of meaning-transformation as one traverses through the dissertation web, thus, valuing fragmentation and connection as aspects of sense-making, which are contextualized (among others) by the reader's meaning frames and my hypertextual performances. The dissertation is submitted in three formats—exclusive dissertation web.pdf, intertextual dissertation web.pdf, and xml version. The exclusive dissertation web.pdf is a web capture in pdf format of all the "files" that compose the dissertation web created in html. The intertextual dissertation web.pdf is a web capture of my dissertation along with the capture of external web resources that contextualize my dissertation web, thus illustrating the intertextuality of hypertexts by making the dissertation part of the larger textual web. Due to the web capture, the "docuverse" is nonlinear and the pages do not follow any particular or author predefined sequences. So, please use the internal links or the bookmarks to read or browse the dissertation web rather than scroll from the first "page" to the last "page" of the pdf formatted docuverse. The third version in xml will be made available at a later date. An html version of the dissertation is available directly from the researcher-author. CAUTION! The links from the abstract may be broken due to archiving of the dissertation web.

Abstract:
Malaysia is a transition economic country that aims to be a developed country by 2020. In realising this mission (Vision 2020), the cluster concept has been an interest and adopted by the central authorities. There are few years ahead to reach the targeted year and it interest of this study to investigate the relevant development on its own engineered cluster of the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) that was put forward on the success of Silicon Valley in the US. This thesis focuses on the development of the MSC cluster in the Malaysia context. It examines and measures the state of the cluster, the role played by its core actors (from Triple Helix perspective) and their relationship in the MSC. The role of collaboration has been used to measure the relationship among actors with the key determinants of cluster formation. A mixed data collection method was used to answer the research question and objectives involved. A conceptual model for analysing the MSC cluster is proposed, bringing together insights from the literature on clusters, role of actors, collaborative relationship and the complex systems of innovation approach. This conceptual model uncover the weaknesses of social dimension (social infrastructure) in Porter’s diamond model and the general approach of Triple Helix model in the cluster development. The cluster lifecycle model is used to add the depth to the analysis on the condition of cluster development.

Nowadays, various kinds of media transmission systems have been developed rapidly. Thus, a higher quality of received information is requested and a diversity of services is also demanded. In general, the AM or FM radio systems convey audio services only, but they do not provide the multimedia services. The Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) system employs the digital communication technologies to improve the shortage of the traditional radio systems. Besides providing a CD-quality audio service, the DAB system has many advantages compared with the AM or FM radio systems, for example, achieving a signal frequency network and providing a good ability of against the severe multi-path effects. The DAB system can convey six high-quality stereo programs and/or multimedia (image, picture, text, and data) services at a data rate of 1.5 M bits/sec. As the DAB technology being developed and the deployment of DAB services, the broadcasting is going to be led to the new era of multi-services. In this thesis, we focus on the transmission and receiving model analyses for the DAB multimedia services. We also build up a DAB receiving platform. In the transmitter side, an application software is designed which can encode the DAB multimedia data. We employ the Philips PDE452 to transmit images and texts. The developed DAB multimedia receiver can receive and decode the incoming images and texts and then send these data to a PC through a RS232 interface. In the PC, these data are decoded and displayed. The functions of our DAB transmission and receiving system have been verified by receiving BCC DAB multimedia (audio, text and image) services.

In this thesis, we model and implement a set of real-time multimedia tools (RMTs) in Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) system. RMT is an abstract model for real-time multimedia transmission in CSCW system, it can be applied to real-time work, including text and audio transmission. The characteristics of cooperation in CSCW system are analyzed and summarized to design the real-time multimedia tools. For the cooperative characteristics of CSCW systems, the real-time requirement of multimedia transmission is indispensable. This thesis considers the properties of both local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN), and refers to client/server model to design our RMT manager model in the network architecture. We propose a new real-time data replication method, called pouring method, with which the replication speed of real-time multimedia data can be greatly increased. Besides, this model constitutes floor control and interprocess communication (IPC). By the mechanism provided by RMT manager model, the functions of the multimedia tools can be easily designed to meet the requirement of the real-time CSCW systems. Finally, we implement a prototype of Group Decision Support Conference System (GDSCS). With this experimental system, the RMT manager model are utilized well to prove its advantages in realizing real-time CSCW systems.

Abstract:

A Brain Computer Interface (BCI) is a hardware and software system that establishes direct communication between human brain and the environment. In a BCI system, brain messages pass through wires and external computers instead of the normal pathway of nerves and muscles. General work ow in all BCIs is to measure brain activities, process and then convert them into an output readable for a computer. The measurement of electrical activities in different parts of the brain is called electroencephalography (EEG). There are lots of sensor technologies with different number of electrodes to record brain activities along the scalp. Each of these electrodes captures a weighted sum of activities of all neurons in the area around that electrode. In order to establish a BCI system, it is needed to set a bunch of electrodes on scalp, and a tool to send the signals to a computer for training a system that can find the important information, extract them from the raw signal, and use them to recognize the user's intention. After all, a control signal should be generated based on the application. This thesis describes the step by step training and testing a BCI system that can be used for a person who has lost speaking skills through an accident or surgery, but still has healthy brain tissues. The goal is to establish an algorithm, which recognizes different vowels from EEG signals. It considers a bandpass filter to remove signals' noise and artifacts, periodogram for feature extraction, and Support Vector Machine (SVM) for classification.

With the advances in embedded technology and the omnipresence of smartphones, tracking systems do not need to be confined to a specific tracking environment. By introducing mobile devices into a tracking system, we can leverage their mobility and the availability of multiple sensors such as camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Inertial sensors. This thesis proposes to improve the existing tracking systems, enhanced Distributed Tracking System (e-DTS 2.0) [19] and enhanced Distributed Object Tracking System (eDOTS)[26], in the form of e-DTS 3.0 and provides an empirical analysis of these improvements. The enhancements proposed are to introduce Android-based mobile devices into the tracking system, to use multiple sensors on the mobile devices such as the camera, the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth sensors and inertial sensors and to utilize possible resources that may be available in the environment to make the tracking opportunistic. This thesis empirically validates the proposed enhancements through the experiments carried out on a prototype of e-DTS 3.0.
