Nowadays, various kinds of media transmission systems have been developed rapidly. Thus, a higher quality of received information is requested and a diversity of services is also demanded. In general, the AM or FM radio systems convey audio services only, but they do not provide the multimedia services. The Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) system employs the digital communication technologies to improve the shortage of the traditional radio systems. Besides providing a CD-quality audio service, the DAB system has many advantages compared with the AM or FM radio systems, for example, achieving a signal frequency network and providing a good ability of against the severe multi-path effects. The DAB system can convey six high-quality stereo programs and/or multimedia (image, picture, text, and data) services at a data rate of 1.5 M bits/sec. As the DAB technology being developed and the deployment of DAB services, the broadcasting is going to be led to the new era of multi-services. In this thesis, we focus on the transmission and receiving model analyses for the DAB multimedia services. We also build up a DAB receiving platform. In the transmitter side, an application software is designed which can encode the DAB multimedia data. We employ the Philips PDE452 to transmit images and texts. The developed DAB multimedia receiver can receive and decode the incoming images and texts and then send these data to a PC through a RS232 interface. In the PC, these data are decoded and displayed. The functions of our DAB transmission and receiving system have been verified by receiving BCC DAB multimedia (audio, text and image) services.

In this thesis, we model and implement a set of real-time multimedia tools (RMTs) in Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) system. RMT is an abstract model for real-time multimedia transmission in CSCW system, it can be applied to real-time work, including text and audio transmission. The characteristics of cooperation in CSCW system are analyzed and summarized to design the real-time multimedia tools. For the cooperative characteristics of CSCW systems, the real-time requirement of multimedia transmission is indispensable. This thesis considers the properties of both local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN), and refers to client/server model to design our RMT manager model in the network architecture. We propose a new real-time data replication method, called pouring method, with which the replication speed of real-time multimedia data can be greatly increased. Besides, this model constitutes floor control and interprocess communication (IPC). By the mechanism provided by RMT manager model, the functions of the multimedia tools can be easily designed to meet the requirement of the real-time CSCW systems. Finally, we implement a prototype of Group Decision Support Conference System (GDSCS). With this experimental system, the RMT manager model are utilized well to prove its advantages in realizing real-time CSCW systems.

Full textA Brain Computer Interface (BCI) is a hardware and software system that establishes direct communication between human brain and the environment. In a BCI system, brain messages pass through wires and external computers instead of the normal pathway of nerves and muscles. General work ow in all BCIs is to measure brain activities, process and then convert them into an output readable for a computer. The measurement of electrical activities in different parts of the brain is called electroencephalography (EEG). There are lots of sensor technologies with different number of electrodes to record brain activities along the scalp. Each of these electrodes captures a weighted sum of activities of all neurons in the area around that electrode. In order to establish a BCI system, it is needed to set a bunch of electrodes on scalp, and a tool to send the signals to a computer for training a system that can find the important information, extract them from the raw signal, and use them to recognize the user's intention. After all, a control signal should be generated based on the application. This thesis describes the step by step training and testing a BCI system that can be used for a person who has lost speaking skills through an accident or surgery, but still has healthy brain tissues. The goal is to establish an algorithm, which recognizes different vowels from EEG signals. It considers a bandpass filter to remove signals' noise and artifacts, periodogram for feature extraction, and Support Vector Machine (SVM) for classification.

Full textWith the advances in embedded technology and the omnipresence of smartphones, tracking systems do not need to be confined to a specific tracking environment. By introducing mobile devices into a tracking system, we can leverage their mobility and the availability of multiple sensors such as camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Inertial sensors. This thesis proposes to improve the existing tracking systems, enhanced Distributed Tracking System (e-DTS 2.0) [19] and enhanced Distributed Object Tracking System (eDOTS)[26], in the form of e-DTS 3.0 and provides an empirical analysis of these improvements. The enhancements proposed are to introduce Android-based mobile devices into the tracking system, to use multiple sensors on the mobile devices such as the camera, the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth sensors and inertial sensors and to utilize possible resources that may be available in the environment to make the tracking opportunistic. This thesis empirically validates the proposed enhancements through the experiments carried out on a prototype of e-DTS 3.0.

In recent years, with the rapid development of the Internet techniques, the usage of on-line exam system for facilitating the qualifying exam and the e-learning is growing more and more popular. However, most of the current on-line exam systems are lacking of variety and interaction with the examinees, and the interflow of examination questions between each system is not smooth enough. With a view to sharing and re-utilizing all these questions better, IMS Global Learning Consortium proposes the standard of QTI(Question and Test Interoperability), accommodating each system with the effective exchange of examination questions, but the exam pattern provided by QTI is still on the basis of monotonous description without the application of the multimedia and the idea of interaction to the design of questions. In order to solve problems mentioned above, this research seeks to combine the standard of QTI 2.0 with SVG(Scalable Vector Graphics)with a view to developing the neo-multimedia interactive question pattern with the variety of exam platform, the diversity of question situations, and the rich interaction between the examinees and the exam platform. For the management of question database, this research adopts native XML database and the classifying searching mode and the XQuery/XPath will also be used to realize the searching system. To accurately estimate the potential of the examinees, this research applies the item response theory to the test and evaluation analysis. The result is also analyzed, according to the three-parameter model, to generate the test characteristic curve of the examinees.

The idea of the product and the design is the indispensable technique of designer. Through the external stimulus, designer always designs the creative and valuable products. The application of digital design information has been new utility of knowledge, experience and idea. The objective of this study is to use different kinds of perceptual adjective to capture the shaping element of the portable multimedia digital products, and establish a shaping element integration system for product shaping development stage to support the designer. Designer can rapidly use the system to integrate the appearance of the products. Furthermore, in the formulation stage, designer can understand the image of products via this system. This study is divided into 5 stages. The first stage is the classification and choice of shaping element. Firstly, through the interview with experts, the shaping elements of the 65 types of portable audio-video products found in market are disassembled. The CAD software is used to perform 2D shaping element scanning. By using the shaping analysis approach to form three types of elements: 27 types of whole shaping elements, 28 types of input shaping elements and 22 types of output shaping elements. There are totally 77 types of shaping elements. By using the Focus Team, it will further screen 15 types of whole shaping element, 15 types of input shaping element and 12 types of output shaping element. There will be totally 47 types of shaping elements. In the second stage, it is the collection and choice of perceptual adjective. It will widely collect the 100 groups of perceptual adjective for portable audio-video products. With the subjective preliminary screening, 61 groups are chosen. By using the Method of Semantic differential, the 61 groups of terms are divided into three types: 42 types of appraisal, 11 types of strength and 8 types of action. Through the questionnaire investigation, eight groups have been chosen finally. The third stage is the questionnaire investigation. According to the screened samples from stage one and two, the relationship between shaping element and perceptual adjective is investigated. Stage 4 is the analysis of shaping imagery. From the average of broken-line graph, the difference of one element and the others can be investigated. Stage 5 is the establishment of shaping element system. It accords to the degree value of each element on each perceptual adjective. By using Visual Basic as the system language, the shaping elements can show on the system interface. Recently, high visual quality and efficient compression rate are the most important issues in multimedia compression system. Besides, image authentication and copyright protection become more and more essential in our digital life. Four important topics, wavelet image compression, halftone image processing, the speedup of video compression and image watermarking, in multimedia system are presented in this paper. In the first research, the hardware implementation of a modified efficient SPIHT coder is presented. Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees (SPIHT) is a highly efficient technique for compressing Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) decomposed images. Though its compression efficiency is a little less famous than Embedded Block Coding with Optimized Truncation (EBCOT) adopted by JPEG2000, SPIHT has a straight forward coding procedure and requires no tables. These make SPIHT the more appropriate algorithm for lower cost hardware implementation. The modifications include a simplification of coefficient scanning process, a 1-D addressing method instead of the original 2-D arrangement of wavelet coefficients, and a fixed memory allocation for the data lists instead of a dynamic allocation approach required in the original SPIHT. Although the distortion is slightly increased, it facilitates an extremely fast throughput and easier hardware implementation. In the second research, a hybrid neural network based method for halftoning and inverse halftoning of digital images is presented. The halftone image is performed by Single-Layer Perceptron neural network (SLPNN), and its corresponding continuous-tone image is reconstructed by Radial-Basis Function neural network (RBFNN). The combined training procedure produces halftone images and the corresponding continuous tone images at the same time. The PSNR performance and visual image quality of these contone images achieved is comparable to the well-known inverse halftoning methods. Moreover, the halftone images obtained are also visually good. In the third research, the speedup of H.264/AVC coders by examining the predicted modes in a code block is described. In a rate-distortion optimized H.264/AVC (H.264/RDO) coder, the best mode with the minimal Lagrange cost is selected after calculating the rate-distortion (R-D) cost which simultaneously considers the distortion and the required number of bits in all possible modes. H.264/RDO coders achieve a good balance between bit rate and image distortion, but lots of additional computing power is required. The proposed method, called two-staged mode decision (TSMD), only executes the modes which might be the best mode used in H.264/RDO coders with other modes disabled. TSMD employs a two-staged decision process: the first stage is to predict some probable encoding modes according to the information when one encodes the preceding macro-blocks and video frames. The second stage refines the decision with either the pre-computed look-up-table or the pre-constructed Back-Propagation Neural (BPN) network. According to our experiment results, over 50% of the computation time is reduced with a small loss in Peak Signal-to-Noise ratio (PSNR) and a slight bit-rate is incremented which are not easily sensed by human eyes. All programs are based on the H.264/AVC standard reference software, JM 9.2. In the last research, a feature-based robust digital image watermarking algorithm is proposed to achieve the goal of image authentication and protection simultaneously. The Hessian-Affine feature detector is at first adopted to extract characteristic regions of an image in the proposed watermark embedding scheme. Then the copyright watermark is embedded into these characteristic regions according to the local orientation of each pixel. Moreover, the remainder regions are applied for image authentication by using block-wise fragile watermarking method. Similarly, the proposed watermark detection scheme follows the above procedure to extract the copyright watermark and the authentic information independently and blindly from watermarked images. Various attacks are also applied to the watermarked images in order to examine the robustness of our algorithm. The experimental results show that the proposed watermarking algorithm can resist most removal and geometric attacks. Besides, changes of an image will be reflected in our hidden watermarks.

Most of the previous medical examination and disease records were saved on paper and it is difficult to further make use of them such as search by keywords. It is also difficult to e-mail or fax them to others when one has to discuss with people at a distance. The materials may also be distorted during this transmission process. Therefore, this research develops an electrocardiogram production and simulation system. Taking advantage of the multimedia functions of computers and characteristics of internet, users can digitize the paper-based electrocardiogram anywhere for saving, inspecting, and discussing easily. The system can also synthesize new electrocardiograms for education purpose. Furthermore, this system can also simulate and show the dynamic and static electro-cardiogram. This research also develops an on-line medical picture editor. Using this on-line editor, users can choose medical pictures from a multimedia database and mark and edit them for the explanation of the symptom on a patient’s body. After editing, users can save the resultant pictures to reuse the edited contents in the future.

The research is to develop a multimedia on-line adaptive testing system by combining with the theory of test and item response, the techniques of network, multimedia and database management, etc. In the meanwhile, we can explore how the tested students'' feedback in the process of testing and afterwards their attitudes influenced by the means of PC. We prospect in the future, not only the surroundings of the test can be taken effect in multidimensional but also the establishment and practice of the test can be promoted the function of the auxiliary and verifiable teaching. There are three focuses on the research: first of all, to develop a multimedia on-line adaptive testing system; second, to evaluate the performance of on-line adaptive testing; finally, to discuss the influence of the attribution of computer towards tested students after applying a way of feedback from system in the process of testing. The research adopts an experiment of nonequivalent-control group designed, the sample schools for the research as Chung Hsiue and Ta Kung Elementary schools in Tainan City and the initial sample for the research as 307 students in total, including 162 boys and 145 girls. The materials used in the research include computer attitudes scale and multimedia on-line adaptive testing system. The data is proceeded by the analysis of two-way covariance; the independent variable as experimentation( feedback, non-feedback) and sex; the dependent variable as second tested score of computer attribute and the covariance variable as first tested score of computer attribute. The major result summarized as the followings: 1. The considerable factor of developing multimedia on-line adaptive testing system: In the aspect of the hardware, it is essential to consider the capacity of random access memory as huge and speed as fast; the capacity of hard-disk as huge and speed as fast. About the aspect of the software, it must be compatible with the web server and the operation system. In the feature of test and item-bank, the model of item response theory is based on the feature of item-bank to apply for the approriate one. The random selection of topics can reduce the high exposure rate of the item so as to prevent from losing its efficiency but it does not promise to provide the best initial item and does not fit with the spirit of the adaptive test. Therefore, the selective way of the initial item should be well-considered from the field of the content and the control of the item exposure value. The method of ability estimation, according to the present survey, if adopted Bayes selected method at the first stage and Maximum likelihood estimator as the last stage, it can acquire of the value of estimation of ability in much shorter test. Among the selected methods, such as the above-mentioned selected methods are upon seeking those purposes not practiced yet and providing the testers the highest standard and abundant informative tests. Generally, there are two applied ways to end the test standard: one as the number of item, the other as the posterior distribution of standard deviation. To consider the system design, we have to take a consideration whether the testing system and the database system design are comparable. The web server is based upon the function of its arrangement and management and the support of the database design as a keypoint. The operation system is based up stability and easy management as a consideration; the connection of the database and web server considered for the opening database connection interface. The system design for the user must be friendly because the flowchart and screen design must be to planed so as to reduce the testers'' anxiety. 2.to evaluate the performance of the multimedia on-line adaptive testing system: The performance of the multimedia on-line adaptive testing is not bad, and it tolerates forty students testing in the meantime, the coefficient of correlation of ability estimation score and tested student nature achievements is 0.625 and it is significant. In other words, if the system score of ability estimation is high, the tested students'' nature achievement will be better. 3.the influence of computer attribution in many way of feedback: There was significant difference existed on computer attitudes for sex. Boys'' computer attitudes are better than girls'' computer attitudes. There was no significant difference existed on computer attitudes for the way of feedback. The researches propose further suggestions for teaching, administrator and further research, and let us understand the related research of the on-line adaptive testing system. Also, the researches may help us reach the target of long distance testing and measurement.

Full textA massive amount of videos are uploaded on video websites, smooth video browsing, editing, retrieval, and summarization are demanded. Most of the videos employ several types of camera operations for expanding field of view, emphasizing events, and expressing cinematic effect. To digest heterogeneous videos in video websites and databases, video clips are profiled to 2D image scroll containing both spatial and temporal information for video preview. The video profile is visually continuous, compact, scalable, and indexing to each frame. This work analyzes the camera kinematics including zoom, translation, and rotation, and categorize camera actions as their combinations. An automatic video summarization framework is proposed and developed. After conventional video clip segmentation and video segmentation for smooth camera operations, the global flow field under all camera actions has been investigated for profiling various types of video. A new algorithm has been designed to extract the major flow direction and convergence factor using condensed images. Then this work proposes a uniform scheme to segment video clips and sections, sample video volume across the major flow, compute flow convergence factor, in order to obtain an intrinsic scene space less influenced by the camera ego-motion. The motion blur technique has also been used to render dynamic targets in the profile. The resulting profile of video can be displayed in a video track to guide the access to video frames, help video editing, and facilitate the applications such as surveillance, visual archiving of environment, video retrieval, and online video preview.

These delivery models provide limited social context for instructional activities, due in part to the anonymity of their participants. When social interaction is included in their prevention programs through voluntary, asynchronous self-help/mutual aid discussion forums, anonymity may still limit social interaction, in favor of observational learning advantages for self-efficacy appraisals derived from "lurking". When these large-group models have been applied to online psychoeducation intervention programs for the purposes of encouraging mutual aid, interactive participation has been limited. This mixed methods study focused on a model for the design of an online small group psychoeducational intervention that integrated individual and social learning in a parent management training program. Self-paced participation was replaced with facilitator-led participation in an asynchronous discussion forum where topics were prioritized and sequenced with learning content from individual web-based training modules. Social interaction was facilitated through online problem-based learning discussion group. Despite assertions that interactive participation in online psychoeducational discussion forums may only be accomplished once a subscriber threshold of several hundred participants has been reached, this study found that small group participation through the program's integrated design resulted large effects for increases in parent self-agency and reduction of over-reactive, coercive parenting behaviors. Participation in the online problem-based group discussion forum was found to have contributed to participant outcomes when posting characteristics revealed the presence of both mutual aid processes and the application of individual learning module content.

This research is to study the development and application to multimedia interactive technology. We try to improve the practical effects when interactive equipments are applied to Campus Guide System (CGS). These equipments include G25 Racing Wheel, Bluetooth Ball, and ASUS Xtion-Pro as well. And, these products are popular in 3C market. In place of a keyboard and a mouse, these equipments could express virtual interactive function and give the users more fun when they play the game. G25 Racing Wheel is to simulate the driving functions. In order to introduce the characteristics of local campus, the game should be designed in the methods of 3 dimensional field scene and a maze-route alike to increase the interactive effects and more fun. The equipment of Bluetooth Ball have different functions including electronic compass, G-Sensor (measuring tiny difference of gravity) and Blue-tooth wireless transmission channel and so on. It can control the material in field scene through the squeeze, press, twist, and throw by user’s hands. To a certain extent, it will enhance elasticity and more interesting in CGS. ASUS Xtion-Pro comprises one special camera. It may measure the body-shaped and the distance from camera to body’s location by an infrared sensor (the information including hands’ datasets and 3D body-skeleton datasets). Incorporated with those datasets, we develop the platform to control the movement of characters in CGS by 3D body-skeleton datasets. Moreover, hands’ datasets can provide the information for the control of optional column function. The big step for the usage of ASUS Xtion-Pro is to provide the opportunity to control the functions in operating CGS without any physical equipment. One user just shows some default gestures in front of the camera. He will be regarded as a target. Afterward he can navigate the field scene, virtual characters and optional column functions by his hands’ gestures and body movements. Furthermore, he may experience more real 3D field scene and interaction in CGS provided by the distinguished features of ASUS Xtion-Pro.

The action research aimed to assist one of my students to promote her self-determination in leisure activities. The 7th graded female student had moderate mental retardation. With her parents' permission, a family-friendly multimedia prompt system was built and applied in the home environment to establish the student’s self-determination skills in leisure activities. As the researcher together with the student and her mother encountering various unexpected situations, the action plan had adjusted for three times. In the research, data was collected mainly through interviews, discussions and direct observations. Data analysis included the continuous-comparison and description statistics. The research obtains the following results: 1. The action plan was developed, implemented and adjustedall based on the student’s needs and problems encountered in her daily life, and correspond to her ecological environment as well as natural support systems. 2. After the implementation of the action plan, the frequence of the student’s attending leisure activities has increased. 3. After the implementation of the action plan, the student’s self-determination in leisure activities has shown frequently, such as self-selection and active seeking assistance/alternatives. 4. After the implementation of the action plan, the student’s leisure activities skills has not yet improved significantly. 5. The student was satisfied with the results from the action plan. The action research shows that the multimedia reminder system enhances the self-determination performance in leisure activities of the student with moderate intellectual disability. The implication from the results is that the multimedia reminder system might be a useful tool for students with intellectual disabilities to improve their own self-determination. Suggestions for practice and further research are provided.
Pandita, Shreya. "OpenFlow based load balancing and proposed theory for integration in VoIP network." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1805/4444.
Full textIn today's internet world with such a high traffic, it becomes inevitable to have multiple servers representing a single logical server to share enormous load. A very common network configuration consists of multiple servers behind a load balancer. The load balancer determines which server would service a clients request or incoming load from the client. Such a hardware is expensive, runs a fixed policy or algorithm and is a single point of failure. In this paper, we will implement and analyze an alternative load balancing architecture using OpenFlow. This architecture acquires flexibility in policy, costs less and has the potential to be more robust. This paper also discusses potential usage of OpenFlow based load balancing for media gateway selection in SIP-PSTN networks to improve VoIP performance.
