Abstract:
Visual aesthetics has showed a reliable association with user experience and how to measure the whole visual aesthetic feeling of a web is a challenge. This research aims to provide a regression equation between visual aesthetics and influential factors by constructing a multiple linear regression model. The final result includes six factors, and those are color, style, novelty, font, figure and movement. The model also gives the ranking of the influence power. In a word, ­­this article not only gives a mathematical algorithm to solve the aesthetics problems, but also provides a new way to help designers access to a better visual effect.

Abstract:
The investigation of aesthetic processing has constituted a longstanding tradition in experimental psychology, of which experimental aesthetics is the second-oldest branch. The status of this psychology of aesthetics, the science of aesthetic processing, is briefly reviewed here. Building on this heritage and drawing on a host of related scientific disciplines, a framework for a strongly interdisciplinary psychology of aesthetics is proposed. It is argued that the topic can be fruitfully approached from at least seven different perspectives, each with multiple levels of analysis: diachronia, ipsichronia, mind, body, content, person and situation. Eventually, this work may coalesce into a unified theory of aesthetic processing.

Abstract:
Imitation of human behaviors is one of the effective ways to develop artificial intelligence. Human dancers, standing in front of a mirror, always achieve autonomous aesthetics evaluation on their own dance motions, which are observed from the mirror. Meanwhile, in the visual aesthetics cognition of human brains, space and shape are two important visual elements perceived from motions. Inspired by the above facts, this paper proposes a novel mechanism of automatic aesthetics evaluation of robotic dance motions based on multiple visual feature integration. In the mechanism, a video of robotic dance motion is firstly converted into several kinds of motion history images, and then a spatial feature (ripple space coding) and shape features (Zernike moment and curvature-based Fourier descriptors) are extracted from the optimized motion history images. Based on feature integration, a homogeneous ensemble classifier, which uses three different random forests, is deployed to build a machine aesthetics model, aiming to make the machine possess human aesthetic ability. The feasibility of the proposed mechanism has been verified by simulation experiments, and the experimental results show that our ensemble classifier can achieve a high correct ratio of aesthetics evaluation of 75%. The performance of our mechanism is superior to those of the existing approaches.

Abstract:
The current study of literary narrative is a vibrant and various activity, marked not by a single orthodoxy but by multiple approaches. Within that variety there are five especially salient issues currently being investigated: nonmimetic narrative; digital narrative; the fact/fiction distinction; narrative space; and rhetorical aesthetics. Rhetorical aesthetics moves not toward a universal standards of literary quality but toward an understanding of how narratives work on their own terms and of appropriate general criteria for judging those terms. These criteria, as a comparison of the endings of Raymond Chandler’s The Big Sleep and Howard Hawks’s adaptation of the novel to film suggests, typically are not purely aesthetic but involve the interrelation of form, ethics, and aesthetics.

The recent turn to aesthetics in literary studies has been embraced by some of its advocates as a polemical riposte to critique: a practice increasingly attacked from multiple directions but here specifically for doing artworks the disservice of reducing them to encryptions of history or ideology. But while the new or revived focus on pleasure (and, to a much lesser extent, displeasure)1 has been vaunted for the way in which it seems to circumvent the reduction of artworks to historical or ideological concepts, our aesthetic experience is always mediated by a finite if constantly rotating repertoire of aesthetic categories. Any literary or cultural criticism purportedly engaged with aesthetics needs to pay attention to these categories, which are by definition conceptual as well as affective and tied to historically specific forms of communication and collective life. But how does one read an aesthetic category? What kind of object is it, and what methodological difficulties and satisfactions does its analysis pose?

Abstract:
<b>Introduction</b>: Today one of the primary goals of any kind of dental treatment is the achievement of balanced smile aesthetics, as patients increasingly attend dental clinics to improve their appearance. The main aim of the present study was to assess and compare the smile aesthetics created by the use of two orthodontic bracket systems (self-ligating vs. conventional ligating) as a part of analysing secondary outcomes of two randomised clinical trials comparing between these two systems. <b>Methodology</b>: The assessment of smile aesthetics was done by analysing and scoring post-orthodontic treatment 125 frontal smile photographs subjectively and objectively. The subjective evaluation was performed by 20 dental professionals and 20 laypeople, while the objective assessment was done by one principal examiner using a group of smile aesthetics parameters. <b>Statistical analysis</b>: Multiple regression statistical analyses were performed to test the association between subjective and objective assessment of smile aesthetics in order to find the significant smile aesthetics predictors and assess the effect of the bracket type (self-ligating vs conventional) on the resulting smile aesthetics. <b>Results</b>: The finding from this research shows that the bracket type was not an important smile aesthetics factor in all the statistical models, although there are other important smile aesthetics factors as there was a significant correlation between the subjective and objective assessment of smile aesthetics parameters (Pearson’s correlation coefficients “r” > 0.50). <b>Conclusion</b>: There is insufficient evidence to reject the null hypotheses of no significant difference in the smile aesthetics created by the two orthodontic bracket systems. An Orthodontic Smile Aesthetics Rating (OSAR) tool has been developed.

Abstract:
O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar em 6 meses os resultados do recobrimento radicular, hipersensibilidade dentinária, dor pós-operatória e estética utilizando o retalho avançado coronalmente modificado (RACm) associado ao enxerto de tecido conjuntivo subepitelial (ETCS) ou a matriz de colágeno suíno (MC) no tratamento de retrações gengivais (RG). Neste ensaio clínico aleatório cego de não-inferioridade, desenho de boca dividida, quinze pacientes com RG superiores múltiplas adjacentes, classe I de Miller, localizadas em caninos e pré-molares, com pelo menos uma RG >= 3 mm foram selecionados e distribuídos aleatoriamente em grupo controle (RACm+ETCS) e grupo de teste (RACm+MC). A altura da RG residual (desfecho primário) foi menor para o grupo controle (0,3 ± 0,6 mm) comparado ao grupo teste (0,6 ± 1,0 mm) (p = 0,008). A porcentagem de recobrimento radicular foi de 89,3% para o grupo controle e 77,7% para o grupo teste. Ambos os grupos demonstraram ganho em largura do TQ em 6 meses (p < 0,05) com diferença entre os grupos (p = 0,031). A profundidade de sondagem e o ganho de nível clínico de inserção foram similares entre os grupos e em todos os períodos avaliados. Ambos os grupos foram eficazes na redução da hipersensibilidade dentinária. A dor pósoperatória foi maior no grupo controle comparada ao grupo teste. A satisfação estética do paciente e do periodontista foi alta independente do grupo sem diferença estatística e a formação de cicatriz nas papilas e as diferenças visuais nas áreas enxertadas foram maiores no RACm+ETCS. Quando equilibrados os resultados clínicos de cobertura radicular, os resultados centrados no paciente e a satisfação estética, a associação RACm+MC é uma alternativa viável ao RACm+ETCS para o tratamento das RG múltiplas.<br>The aim of this study was to compare the 6 months outcome of root coverage, dentin hypersensitive, pain after surgery and aesthetics using the modified coronal advanced flap (mCAF) associate with connective tissue graft (CTG) or collagen matrix (CM) in the treatment of gingival recession (GR). Fifteen patients with superior multiple recessions in canines and pre-molars were selected for this non-inferority randomized clinical trial, which was divided in control group (mCAF+CTG) and test group (mCAF+CM). The residual GR (primary outcome) was lower for control group (0,3 ± 0,6 mm) comparing with test group (0,6 ± 1,0 mm) (p = 0,008). The root coverage percentage was 89,3% for control group and 77,7% for test group. Both groups demonstrated gain of keratinized tissue in 6 months (p < 0,05) statically different between groups (p = 0,031). The probing depth and gain of clinical attachment level were similar between the groups in all evaluated periods. Dentin hypersensitive was reduced in all groups. The pain after surgery was higher in control group comparing with test group. Aesthetic satisfaction evaluated by patient and periodontist was high independently of group with no statistical difference, however, the scar formation at papillae base and visual differences were visually higher using mCAF+CTG. Considering the clinical outcomes balanced with patient related outcomes and aesthetic satisfaction, the use of mCAF+CM is a alternative to mCAF+CTG in the treatment of multiple gingival recession.

L’Art a toujours consacré une grande part à l’image du féminin. Que cela soit dans l’iconographie gréco-romaine ou judéo-chrétienne, ses multiples représentations sont synonymes de confusion et d’ambivalence. La femme et l’image ont en commun de susciter méfiance et fascination. C’est au travers de l’étude approfondie de quelques figures clefs de l’histoire de l’art, que nous vous proposons une relecture post-féministe des diverses facettes du féminin, prises dans la dyade sacré/profane. Mythes et croyances donnèrent naissance à un métissage pagano-chrétien qui fit émerger un Eternel Féminin inébranlable encore très prégnant dans l’art actuel. Tantôt dans la foi de l’image, tantôt dans sa condamnation, ainsi se résume l’insoluble combat entre l’humain et le divin. La Femme restera à jamais l’élément trouble associé au paraître et à la beauté. Dans nos recherches nous avons constaté que la femme et la peinture sont en parfaite adéquation. Elles sont indissociables car iconoclasme et misogynie vont souvent de pair. Peu à peu, le corps remplacera la toile et le fard, la peinture pour les artistes transgenres. Dans d’étranges (queer) parodies entre exhibition et chamanisme, ils réinventeront leur devenir-féminin. La surface de l’œuvre devient alors le miroir où se reflète cet Autre, alter ego tant recherché. La pensée féministe se met en marche au travers des révolutions des genres et des sexes. Ainsi, c’est entre Pygmalion et Narcisse que les artistes des XXéme et XXIéme siècles, nous offrent, entre mascarade et mélancolie, la vision d’un idéal sans original. Enfin, nous revenons sur l’art des femmes. Leurs pratiques sont souvent borderline, partagées entre violence, humour et Charis dans leur quête d’un sacré hors religion. Elles offrent un devenir-pandorien de l’art pour briser à jamais le désormais trop célèbre : « Sois belle et tais toi! »<br>A large percentage of art has always been devoted to the images of the feminine. In Greco-Roman as well as in Judeo-Christian iconography, these multiple representations are synonymous with confusion and ambivalence. The common link between woman and her image is the ability to arouse distrust and fascination. By means of an in-depth study of some key figures from the history of art, we hereby put forward a post-feminist review of the diverse facets of the feminine, viewed under the sacred/secular dyad. Myths and faiths gave rise to a pagan-Christian hybrid, bringing forth a constant “Eternal Feminine” that is still firmly rooted in contemporary art. It is sometimes the faith of the image, sometimes its condemnation, that encapsulates the unresolvable fight between the human and the divine. Woman will remain forever the obscure element that is associated with appearance and beauty. In the course of our research, we ascertained that woman and painting are in perfect harmony; they are inseparable because iconoclasm and misogyny often go hand in hand. Step by step, the body will replaces the canvas and the make-up, the painting of transgender artists. In queer parodies between exhibition and shamanism, they reinvent their transformation into the feminine. The surface of the work becomes a mirror that reflects this Other, the alter ego, so longed for. Feminist thinking is set in motion through the revolutions of genders. Artists of the 20th and 21st centuries offer us a vision of an ideal without an original, a new Pygmalion or Narcissus, somewhere between masquerade and melancholy. Finally, we return to the art of the women. Divided between violence, humour and charis, their methods are often borderline, in their quest for the sacred that is beyond religion. They offer to evolve into “pandorien” art to shatter for ever the henceforth overly famous idea: «be beautiful and remain silent! »

CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeiÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior<br>Esta tese estuda a qualidade formativa dos processos criativos e improvisaÃÃo livre, mediante interaÃÃes poÃtico-estÃticas (a partir da concepÃÃo grega) em prÃticas artÃstico-pedagÃgicas, voltados para a educaÃÃo sonoro-musical contemporÃnea, em sintonia com prÃticas musicais desta mesma contemporaneidade. Subsidiada pelo suporte teÃrico-metodolÃgico de um grupo de autores, decisivos em minha formaÃÃo como artista-docente, trata-se de propostas cruciais para o desenvolvimento do potencial inventivo de pessoas envolvidas em situaÃÃes de ensino/aprendizagem participativas. Subsidized by the theoretical and methodological support of a group of authors, crucial in my development as artist-professor, it is crucial proposals for the development of the inventive potential of people involved in teaching situations/participatory learning. The major goal is to investigate the performance and qualitative scope of these proposals, in the light of the new paradigms of contemporary knowledge, which I have applied to my work with students of Bachelor of Music, Theatre, Dance, Film and Audiovisual at the ICA of the UFC. The aim is, therefore, the individual and collective development of perceptive and expressive potential of these artists/educators in formation, through knowledge produced interactively by actions undertaken in workshops/laboratories and performances as well as their results in other teaching/learning situations and artistic projects. The thesis is structured in three chapters: a) first I present a revision of the work made by H.-J. Koellreutter, Conrado Silva, Murray Schafer e Chefa Alonso, with their Brazilian counterparts as Teca A. de Brito (Koellreutter), LuÃs B. Albuquerque (Silva) and Marisa Fonterrada (Schafer), together with Paulo Freireâs work, all of whose lives and intellectual productions attest, with specific contributions, intense dedication to innovative education and the sharing of formative objectives such as autonomy, creativity, critical thinking, dialogism and interactivity; b) then I create dialogues between these authors and other that have studied the great changes in contemporary thought, with strong effects in several areas, leading to the emergence of new paradigms that assert cognitive act as process, creation as pedagogical excellence, and action-research methodology as an imperative dictated by the articulation of shared knowledge production and artisticeducational settings to an actual investigation, seeking supportive strategies to overcome the problems lived; c) then I present the concrete results of the artistic and educational activities in workshops/laboratories, performances and classrooms from a number of action-research instruments, such as the individual and collective documentation, revealing their power of synthesis and analytical evaluation of the whole construction process theoretical of the thesis, whose examination reveals the quality of the changes and advances made by all participants.

After his publication of obsession with butterflies, he entered the field of nature writing using his knowledge of humanity and literature. Due to his concern of nature, he observes and senses nature widely by literature. Both of his essays and novels are based on nature writing. This thesis aims at the extroversion as the main theme to reveal the characteristic of his representation, for instance, historical memory and topography. Wu Ming-Yi is good at connecting those themes with the writing objects to indicate the multiple visions and thoughts of the differing paths with Taiwan, local, and environment. On the other hand, this thesis discusses Wu Ming-Yi’s introspection on “writing” and how he “sees” the self-existence and therefore to memorize the “self” through his representation of introversion. Furthermore, he expresses his humanistic concerns about nature by writing his experiences and introspection. The conclusion of my thesis focuses on how Wu Ming-Yi’s aesthetics and caring thoughts point to “life”, and try to reveal the essence of life in the differing environmental system. His poetic language is the achievement of experiencing nature and engaging the experience with instinct. Meanwhile, his poetic language attracts reader to observe and experience nature, therefore it indicates his caring thoughts and concerns about nature.

This research aims to analyze the values and faiths with which these ambassadors are equipped through the process of recruitment, training, and operation, further discovering the role they take in implementing aesthetic education. By adopting multiple case studies method, one of the strategies of qualitative research, this study selects campus ambassador groups from three different universities as research subjects. Through interviewing and analyzing data, the conclusions are listed as below: A. The operation of campus ambassadors is an effective cycle based on the group objective, training courses, hands-on practices, recruitment, and assessment. B. The criteria of ambassador recruitment are strictly followed to ensure the member quality and enhance learning effectiveness. Passion and potential are two core values in selecting new ambassadors. C. The training process not only equips students with extrinsic skills but also with intrinsic preparation for mindset. Three perspectives of competency: cognition, affection, and skill, can thus be established. D. The service guidelines reflect the pursuit for the high quality of beauty and goodness, as well as self-fulfillment. E. Beauty and good will set the model for the beauty of image. F. Services provided by campus ambassadors are a collection of aesthetic experience. Guest reception stimulates positive interaction, strengthening diverse perceptions; campus tour activates aesthetics within campus, deepening local recognition. G. The cultivation and practices of campus ambassadors is the experience that emphasizes aesthetic formation. Aesthetics is implemented in service through informal curriculum and practices. H. Campus ambassadors enhance school image, as well as students’ soft skills and competency. Lastly, based on the research conclusions, suggestions are provided in this research in terms of campus ambassadors in universities, aesthetic education, and further study.

AbstractCleft rhinoplasty is one of the most difficult and challenging aesthetic surgeries to carry out and bears a significant impact on the overall nasal aesthetics and function. Two reasons understood for this are the simultaneous involvement of all the layers of the nose including the skin, cartilage, skeleton and vestibular lining (this being the principal reason) and the significant scarring that is the consequence of multiple previous surgical interventions. There is a mention of numerous techniques for ultimate correction of unilateral and bilateral cleft nasal deformities but no single technique has till date provided a definite solution for correction of all the problems that accompany these deformities. There is a revised interest in performing primary rhinoplasties at the time of lip repair with or without presurgical orthopedics but these procedures may still warrant definitive rhinoplasty at a later date. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a comprehensive review of cleft rhinoplasty in the most systematic manner beginning with the pathologic anatomy followed by surgical timing, pre-operative evaluation and surgical correction. The chapter also discusses the use of various grafts in a typical cleft rhinoplasty case as well as treatment strategy for management of both, unilateral and bilateral cleft nasal deformities. The outcomes as well as complications and a note on further revisions have also been presented.

The challenge is to make scars as inconspicuous as possible, and there are many techniques to be considered, including proper patient selection, preoperative preparation, the choice of surgical techniques, and postoperative care. The proactive management of tissue healing with prophylaxis of pathological scarring is particularly important. As the scarring process passes through multiple phases over a 6-week to 6-month period, cosmetic surgeons should not only plan to prepare patients well in advance of surgery but also be prepared to provide support to patients well after.

Functional architecting methods determine modularization based upon functional concerns. Brand identity is additionally determined by sensory aesthetics. We introduce three architecting rules to maintain brand identity in platforms. A dominant theme must be ensured on each product of a brand, and this must be transferred to each product’s specifications and aesthetics. Elements critical to brand identity must be made common across all products in a brand. For any platform, brand specific elements must be maintained unique on each product variant. The set of elements not identified as a brand carrier can be made common to a platform. A matrix representation of each platform and its supported brand variants is useful as an architecting tool.

Birkhoff proposed that order divided by complexity is a formula for aesthetic measurement. In that context, this work proposes to measure order with a method to quantify Gestalt principles. These principles establish how humans visually group elements of a shape together, and they have been used in architecture, product design and art as guidelines for good design. A human subject study was conducted to test the hypothesis that if complexity is held constant, Gestalt can serve as a direct measurement of aesthetics. In a survey, subjects were asked to evaluate their preference for multiple individual 2-D representations of automotive wheel rims from a variety of styles. The wheel rims within each style were designed in pairs, one pair with lower and one pair with higher Gestalt. Complexity was held constant by only comparing subject ratings within wheel rim styles. The results show that a positive change in Gestalt has a positive effect on aesthetic subject preference and that preferences are not significantly different for designs differing in geometry but having the same Gestalt. The implications of these results for designers and for future work are discussed.

Drop is one of the most common user scenarios for computer peripherals like wired/wireless keyboards, mice, and webcams. Failures due to such impact events are typical examples of overstress types of failures that occur during the useful life of a product. The ability of computer peripheral devices to survive impact with minimal to no impact to product performance or aesthetics is a goal for the product development teams. Engineers have to choose the proper materials and use different simulation and test methods for creating product designs that will survive multiple drop events. Traditional product development process involves iterations of design-physical test-design modification cycles to meet drop requirements. To reduce iterations, expedite product development and reduce time-to-market, virtual drop simulations are conducted at an early stage in product development without the need for any physical samples. This paper presents case-studies on this approach to product development. Case-studies are presented for a keyboard and a mouse. The case-study shows how drop simulation results were used to inform design decisions and how design improvements in terms of material selection or actual feature changes were made early in the design cycle. The study illustrates the use of a high speed camera to capture movies of product performance in drop tests to further discover weaknesses and correlate actual results with simulations. Using a combination of simulation and capturing deformation information with a high speed camera during actual testing, the product development iterations were minimized in terms of cost and time.

&lt;p&gt;The Pier 55 project in New York City represents an achievement in design, documentation, fabrication and construction achievable only through recent advances in construction technology. Pier 55 is a new park built over the Hudson River constructed from complex precast concrete. It is a one of its kind pier with a signature design by the Heatherwick Studio that undulates in elevation and is structurally composed of tulip shaped concrete “pots”. Heatherwick's vision required significant collaborative efforts by all involved to define a geometry that satisfied the often-competing needs for prefabrication efficiency, durability, accessibility, design aesthetics and construction feasibility. Arup and Heatherwick developed parametric tools to automate much of the design process so that multiple iterations of geometry could be tested and refined to find optimal solutions. Initial scripts to define surface geometry of the “pot” structures for coordination evolved into additional scripts which created analysis models, full structural geometry, and shop drawing level documentation. As the project moved into construction, Arup and the fabrication team at Fort Miller precast concrete manufacturer and Fab3 steel fabricator utilized the models and scripts generated during the design process for direct digital input of the structural geometry to create complex CNC-milled foam formwork, 3- dimensional rebar documentation, and documentation and digital fabrication of steel components required for assembly and erection of the various pieces by Weeks Marine. This paper will discuss significant innovations including using sophisticated parametric modeling to digitally design, document, fabricate and construct geometrically complex structures.&lt;/p&gt;

Notwithstanding the design as a practice and discipline seem shielded on a simplistic discourse of functional / communicative efficiency, wandering through multiple aestheticism apparently neutral in relation to the symbolic but in fact they never are because what really happens is that the aesthetic appearance of the generated forms will always be a review of the powers ruling. We start from understanding that the act of creating an aesthetic artefact will also be a movement of inscription in a discursive platform (that precedes it) thus being itself an narrative act and representing a positioning in relation to certain symbolic reality. On the presented reflection Design is seen as a discipline and / or an instrument of action, whose operational relevance tends to question and simultaneously rehearsing a response to not just the question why but also for what? Apparently Design is a content mediator, but also, it is structure, body and idea. We think design praxis as discipline and enrolment tool for critical thought and social transformation. For guiding research in this text, we propose the following question: Can Design form an engagement with the symbolic for them in order to be an active part in the production of critical thinking in the place where it belongs? Methodologically our argument will be present in two different moments: 1. first, exploratory nature where we rescue the draw issues in the practice of design and 2. second, analytical nature concerning the subject issues (graphic and / or utility ) of design and how it incorporates formal rites, political events and social practices of contemporary everyday life. Since many of the underlying diseases are either chronic or incurable, some current therapeutics take the form of orthotic devices that assist upper limb function, thereby improving patient quality of life [1]. One such example is the Wilmington Robotic Exoskeleton (WREX), consisting of a set of gravity-counterbalancing exoskeleton arms attached to either a full upper-body brace, or in previous models, a wheelchair [1]. This device and its successors have proven to be significant aids in allowing patients to perform everyday tasks such as eating and writing [1]. However, according to both patients and physicians, this device and others, while effective, are often underutilized due to factors including brace size and weight, low device comfort, unappealing brace aesthetics, low range of motion, and lack of brace adjustability. In order to increase patient utilization of exoskeleton arm systems, we thus propose the replacement of the current brace system with a novel vest device, designed specifically for increased patient comfort, device adjustability, aesthetics, and range of motion, while preserving the existing strength and durability of current solutions.

Abstract:
In recent years, aesthetic design is given increasing importance in the development of products industry with the growing maturity of product functions. The designer is required to reflect consumer needs in the aesthetic design while giving consideration to use and function. Effective techniques enabling design creation based on consumer preference and needs are indispensable. This study thus aims to construct a design support system which can identify various consumer needs and provide ideas to the designer at an early stage in the design process. In the identification of the consumer preferences, it is necessary to also expose vague consumer preferences. The design support system thus also aims to reduce burden on the consumers during consumer survey and expose consumer preference by using the genetic algorithm (a type of Interactive Evolutionary Computing) for the extraction of consumer preference. The authors also propose the use of rough sets and decision rules for analyzing the acquired consumer preference data specifically and effectively, and formulate consumer preference rules. Furthermore, the constructed system is able to generate multiple design solutions automatically by reflecting the consumer preference rules in design solutions created by the designer, and display the generated solutions to the designer.

Abstract:
This paper presents the results of a study to evaluate the efficacy of scientific visualization for multiple categories of users, including both domain experts as well as users from the general public. Efficacy was evaluated for understanding, usability, and aesthetic value. Results indicate that aesthetics play a critical, but complex role in enhancing both user understanding and usability.
