Abstract:
This chapter charts the relationships between three large areas of background knowledge and professional practice, at the intersection of which everyday work in forensic mental health takes place. We describe the three underpinning models (biomedical, psychological, and sociological) the differences between them in training and in outlook, and the relationship of each to the legal context in which all must operate. Representing different models of human problems and distress, we recognize that sometimes there is friction between them. Their diverse perspectives notwithstanding, these models ca

Abstract:
This chapter uses statistical tools to investigate the interrelationship between typological features in the World Atlas of Language Structures Online (Dryer and Haspelmath 2013) in the WALS 201 language sample, with the objective of determining how crosscategorial word order generalizations might emerge as the result of syntactic change. Multiple Correspondence Analysis and a variety of cluster analyses show that word order features tend to group along the familiar lines of the Head Parameter. But there is an important caveat to this, previously noticed by Albu (2006): word order features in

Abstract:
A Blaze of Light in Every Word presents a conceptual model for analyzing vocal delivery in popular song recordings focused on three overlapping areas of inquiry: pitch, prosody, and quality. The domain of pitch, which refers to listeners’ perceptions of frequency, considers range, tessitura, intonation, and registration. Prosody, the pacing and flow of delivery, comprises phrasing, metric placement, motility, embellishment, and consonantal articulation. Qualitative elements include timbre, phonation, onset, resonance, clarity, paralinguistic effects, and loudness. Intersecting all three domain
