Abstract:
This conclusion reconsiders the role of horizontal integration and multimedia conglomerates in the process of stylistic remediation and the industrial motivation behind stylistic remediation, both in films and comics. It shows that horizontal integration and conglomeration have become more influential over the past three decades, as seen in the case of Time Warner. It also discusses the ways in which stylistic remediation can serve as a research and development function by allowing multinational conglomerates to experiment with computer-generated imagery (CGI) and form that can be spread across multiple properties (like “bullet time” in The Matrix). Finally, it examines whether the remediation of comic book stylistics into films is fundamentally a by-product of technologies and an indication of a Manovichian shift from cinema to digital cinema.

Abstract:
Potato apical rooted cuttings (ARC) originating from juvenile simple rounded leaf mother plants are a significant new way of transplanting and field growing of seed potatoes under smallholder field conditions in the tropical highlands. The aim of this paper is to highlight the development of the technology by researchers and farmers in Vietnam, Philippines, Kenya and Uganda. The development of cultivars with late blight resistance for which no source of tuber seed was available stimulated the creation of using ARC. The demystification of tissue culture by the 1980s greatly aided this development. The key hurdle was to multiply tissue culture plants in beds of growing media and maintain the physiological young stage of the mother plants from which apical cuttings could be repeatedly taken for several months to produce ARC for sale to farmers who demanded the new cultivars (cvs) with all the desirable attributes. The technology was first developed in warmer climates at lower elevations of less than 1,500 meters above mean sea level (mamsl) but gradually it was successfully developed at cooler climates in East Africa. The technology is well established in the highlands of Vietnam and Philippines. The largest family operation is producing over 4 million ARC annually. These high-quality ARC along with improved cvs have markedly improved yields of smallholder farmers, improving food security and increasing their income levels. In Kenya and Uganda there is a rapid adoption of ARC by seed producers, smallholder farmers and youths. The ARC revolution is bringing a great deal of excitement and promise of prosperity to remote poor highland communities.

Yellowstone, the Tetons, and Jackson Hole were shaped by multiple catastrophes. Huge volcanic eruptions and powerful earthquakes played major roles. Finishing touches were added by another kind of calamity: A rare global Ice Age produced gigantic glaciers that buried the landscape with ice two-thirds of a mile thick in places. The glaciers carved mountains, canyons, and lake basins. They dumped large piles of debris and redirected the flow of rivers. The Yellowstone—Teton region is a world-class example of how land was reshaped by glaciers during what is known as the Pleistocene Ice Age. The Ice Age was not a single glacial period, but many intermittent cold spells interspersed with warmer periods during which the ice melted. The timing of major glacial periods is notoriously uncertain. Although continental ice sheets did not quite reach as far south as Yellowstone, a regional icecap and large glaciers covered the Yellowstone—Teton country during three major episodes of at least the past 300,000 years—and perhaps the past 2 million years. The last of these big glaciers retreated about 14,000 years ago, although some argue they did not recede until 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. Today, small glaciers in the Teton Range are found only above 10,000 feet. During each major episode, most of Yellowstone National Park was buried beneath an icecap as much as 3,500 feet thick, among the largest in the ancient Rocky Mountains. Gigantic masses of ice flowed down from the high Yellowstone Plateau, carving and scouring the Earth’s surface, diverting and damming rivers into their present forms, steepening mountain fronts, and deepening lakes. The ice helped sculpt the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. More than anything, the thick ice scraped Yellowstone’s volcanic topography, further smoothing the plateau and helping to excavate the basin occupied by Yellowstone Lake. Jackson Hole became a rendezvous of glaciers converging from the north, north-east, and west. Ice up to 2,000 feet thick scooped out the valley floor. The glaciers left tall ridges of rocky debris now covered by lush conifer forests. Such ridges, called moraines, helped shape Jackson Lake.
