Multiple sclerosis (MS), degenerative disease characterized by defects in the myelin membrane of neural cells, takes place probably by oxidative, inflammatory and autoimmune mechanisms in genetically vulnerable individuals, under the influence of environmental factors associated with feeding. This thesis consists of two parts. In the rst part we investigate the worldvolume supersymmetry algebra of multiple membrane theories. We begin with a description of M-theory branes and their intersections from the perspective of spacetime and worldvolume supersymmetry algebras. We then provide an overview of the recent work on multiple M2-branes focusing on the Bagger-Lambert theory and its relation to the Nambu-Poisson M5-brane and the ABJM theory. The worldvolume supersymmetry algebras of these theories are explicitly calculated and the charges interpreted in terms of spacetime intersection

We proposed a new device structure which has Silicon Nitride (Si3N4) as the charge-trapping layer, hafnium oxide (HfO2) as the sensing membrane. During the various voltage s

Abstract:
The increasing cost of freshwater and wastewater treatment coupled with stringent environmental regulations has pushed process industries towards sustainable engineering, emphasising the need for water minimisation. This can be achieved through the implementation of process integration strategies such as water recycle, reuse, regeneration-recycle and regeneration-reuse between water sources, water sinks and regenerators. This concept is referred to as water allocation planning (WAP). This work addresses the WAP problem through the application of process integration and its enabling tools. A co

A whole module was based on mass balance and simulated with software MATLAB for first-order differential equations. The concentration, purity and yield in each stage by using the rejection of solute for organic solvent nanofiltration membrane were studied. In this research a complete model according to the set up conditions was verified by previous experimental data and shown in good agreement. For various operating conditions such as average permeat

We chose thrombin, vascular endothelial growth factor-A165 (VEGF-A165) and platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB) as model proteins to demonstrate our sensing method. Selective detection of these analytes was achieved by modifying nanoparticles of three different metals (Au, Ag and Pt) with their corresponding aptamer or antibody. Functionalized metal n

COMT is an enzyme that catalyses the transfer of the methyl group from S-adenosyl-L-methionine to the hydroxyl group of a large variety of catechols, including catechol-estrogens and the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine. The protein is expressed in both a soluble form (SCOMT) and a membrane-bound form with additional 50 residues at the N-terminal (MBCOMT). In most human tissues, the majority of COMT is present in soluble form and only a small fraction as MBCOMT. The human COMT gene has a common single-nucleotide polymorphism that results in substitution of methionine for valine at

The utilization of in vitro tests with a tiered testing strategy for detection of mild ocular irritants can reduce the use of animals for testing, provide mechanistic data on toxic effects, and reduce the uncertainty associated with dose selection for clinical trials. The first section of this thesis describes how in vitro methods can be used to improve the prediction of the toxicity of chemicals and ophthalmic products. The proper utilization of in vitro methods can accurately predict toxic threshold levels and reduce animal use in product development. Sections two, three and four describe t
