Abstract:

Abstract:
The research results of multisensors based on optical fiber, the principle of which is to change the conditions of propagation of optical radiation in the optical fiber in the places where macro-bends are formed at the points of impact, are presented in the paper. The formation of macro-bends leads to an additional attenuation of the power of optical radiation propagating through the optical fiber. A single-mode optical fiber was used with the parameters, which are supported by numerous manufacturers and comply with the recommendations of ITU-T G.655. The measurements were carried out for four wavelengths of optical radiation (1310, 1490, 1550, 1625 nm), corresponding to the transparency windows of the optical loss spectrum of the optical fiber. Using optical reflectometry methods, it was determined that the amount of attenuation of optical radiation of each macro-bend formed at the point of action of the multisensor does not depend on the number of simultaneously formed macro-bends and also does not depend on the location of the point of action along the length of the multisensor. The dependences of the attenuation of the optical radiation power introduced by the macro-bends of the optical fiber on the radius, length, or angle of the macro-bends formed at the multisensory impact points are determined experimentally. The obtained dependences also allow one to determine the optimal parameters of the formed macro-bends of the multisensor to obtain the maximum range of attenuation change for each value of the wavelength. The values of the minimum distance between the impact points, the maximum number of impact points and the optimal values of the radius and angle of the optical fiber macro-bend at the impact points are determined. The results obtained provide opportunities to continue the development of multisensors that allow us to receive information about parameters from several impact points, that are located on a single optical fiber, simultaneously.

Abstract:
This paper presents a multivariate analysis framework for pattern detection in a multisensor system; the proposed principal component analysis (PCA)/support vector machine- (SVM-) based supervision scheme can identify patterns in the multisensory system. Although the PCA and SVM are commonly used in pattern recognition, an effective methodology using the PCA/SVM for multisensory system remains unexplored. Pattern detection in a multisensor system has long been a challenge. For example, object inspections in multisensor systems are difficult to perform because inspectors might fail to use multiple sensing devices when concurrently detecting different patterns. Therefore, to resolve this issue, this study proposes a novel framework for establishing indicators and corresponding thresholds to identify patterns in the system; it employs a feature-based scheme that integrates principal component analysis (PCA) with an SVM for effectively detecting patterns in the system. Experiments were conducted using a tactile and optical measurement system. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method can effectively identify patterns in multisensor systems by using a feature-based algorithm that combines PCA and SVM classification for detecting various patterns. Moreover, the proposed framework established alarm indicators and corresponding thresholds that can be used for pattern detection.

Abstract:
Techniques for machine condition monitoring and diagnostics are gaining acceptance in various industrial sectors. They have proved to be effective in predictive or proactive maintenance and quality control. Along with the fast development of computer and sensing technologies, sensors are being increasingly used to monitor machine status. In recent years, the fusion of multisensor data has been applied to diagnose machine faults. In this study, multisensors are used to collect signals of rotating imbalance vibration of a test rig. The characteristic features of each vibration signal are extracted with an auto-regressive (AR) model. Data fusion is then implemented with a Cascade-Correlation (CC) neural network. The results clearly show that multisensor data-fusion-based diagnostics outperforms the single sensor diagnostics with statistical significance.

Abstract:
The alkaloids concurrent detection and identification in the samples by the method of multisensory inversion voltammetry is the purpose of the work. To achieve this goal, the proposed method has been substantiated, the composition of the electrochemical test system has been optimized taking into account the specifics of the detected substances, and informative signs that characterize the presence of alkaloids in the studied sample have been found. A new approach, consisting in the use of an electrochemical multisensor test system in the form of a solution containing a set of metal ions that can form complex compounds with organic substances, has been developed and scientifically approved. The results showed that each organic substance has a different effect on the electrochemical behavior of the multisensory test system. The use of such a test system made it possible to model the principle currently defined by the term "Electronic tongue". An electronic database has been prepared according to the results of the electroanalytical studies, which made it possible to identify the detected substance by comparing it with analyzed sample. The proposed electrochemical method, which is based on multisensor inversion voltammetry, allows the detection and identification of both narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances with high confidence for a small mass of the sample.

Abstract:
This paper discusses rock art in southern Scandinavia as a multisensory format, where both sight and touch would have contributed to the comprehension of the images. From a structural semiotic point of view, we suggest that rock art can be construed as an organised set of features, such as visual and tactile elements, organised into heterogeneous unities with dynamic relations between elements that can change over time with respect to how they are experienced. We argue that in order to understand the rock art medium, it is crucial to take into consideration the multisensory interaction between the perceiver and the qualities of the rock art surface. The reason for including tactile elements in our interpretation of the conception of rock art is the way it was created: by hands interacting with tools and rock surfaces, as well as the spontaneous human tendency to explore the physical world through touch. One can identify key features in the images that would arguably facilitate tactile recognition, as well as be better explained from a multisensorial perspective. This includes the position of the images on horizontal outcrops, the moderate size of the images, the application of an orthographic perspective, the use of ‘tactile markers’ (ie crucial features having a strategic function for understanding images by touch), and the occurrence of incomplete images. A multisensorial perspective on rock art furthermore has semiotic implications. Incomplete images, for example, can be understood as indexical stand-ins for the whole imagined picture, ie as iconic indices. A multisensorial approach to Scandinavian rock art thus allows for new explanations for certain design choices, as well as a new understanding of how the images could relay meaning to a perceiver.

Abstract:
In Sweden we eat about 11 g of salt per day, which is twice as much as recommended. Since too high salt intake poses risks to health, food companies in a project funded by Vinnova, on behalf of the Government Offices, have joined forces to develop methods for salt reduction, including a so-called multisensory toolbox. The aim of the study was to investigate in a sensory home use test, whether the acceptance and perception of salt differed between a salt reduced tomato soup compared to a reference soup. A second aim was to investigate consumers' perception of saltiness in food products that are commonly found in Swedish food culture, through a survey. In the sensory home use test, it turned out that two of the salt reduced soups, one with chili and one with spice blend, were perceived as most salty even though the reference soup had a higher salinity. There was no significant difference in the liking between the soups, which meant that the salt reduced soups were liked as much as the reference soup. In the survey, the results showed that the foods that were most salty were table salt, soy sauce, herb salt and roasted and salted peanuts. Most foods that contain a low or no salinity at all, were still perceived as salty. The study showed that salt reduction of a tomato soup, by multisensory influence, was possible. In the future, aromas or toppings from foods that are associated with salt can be used in salt reduced products.

Authors: Klara Johansson, Marina Johansson Supervisor: Professor Bertil Hultén Ph.D. Examiner: Senior Lecturer Leif V Rytting Ph.D. Course: Business economies III – Retail and service management (C level) Issues: How are the customer's movement patterns and buying behaviour affected in store with the help of visual and auditory stimuli? Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate, analyse and clarify whether the customer's movement patterns and buying behaviour can be affected by means of sensory stimuli. With the help of sensory marketing, white arrows and bird song, we want to influence the customer's choice of direction in the store with the purpose of making the customer notice a wider part of the store. Methodology: The thesis has been designed with a deductive approach. We have done a quantitative analysis with an experimental approach. An extensive search for literature has been the basis of the hypotheses formulated, in order to answer the research question. Primary data were collected through a total of 1347 observations at Plantagen in Kalmar. Findings: A finding of this thesis is that customers are influenced to follow the visual stimuli by the means of white arrows. It is thereby possible to affect customers to notice a wider part of the store by the means of visual stimuli. We can also show that adding auditory stimuli and visual stimuli can affect the buying behaviour in the matter of time spent in the experimental zone, although further research is required to exam to which extent the impact occurs. Abstract:
Resultatet visar en positiv påverkan på elevens självförtroende i matematiska situationer, främst gällande symbolhantering.<br>This study examines what happens in the situation of intense, multi-sensory instruction for a SEN-student in the subject of mathematics, a student with special education needs in mathematics. What kind of development is happening in terms of the student's number sense, as well as various forms of learning in the teaching process is also something that is studied. The study has a qualitative approach and was implemented as a case study with a SEN-student in the subject of mathematics in year one. The case study includes an intervention with math tests which were taken before and after an intensive teaching of basic number sense. Participant observation of the teaching sequence has been implemented, which also have been filmed. For the analysis Bruner's theory of representations along with Vygotsky's theory of learning from a sociocultural perspective is used. The representations in Bruner's theory is described as the enactive that is action-based, the iconic that is image based and the symbolic which is language-based.  The result in this case shows that an intensive instruction with a multi-sensory approach affects the student's number sense in a positive way. The pupils solution frequency between pre- and posttest tripled. The Pupil developed learning in the different representations where initially the enactive representation was used and gradually even the iconic- and symbolic representation. A development including mathematical competences were visible. The results show a positive impact on the pupil self-confidence in mathematical situations, primarily in situations for symbol processing.

Abstract:
A key goal for humans and artificial intelligence systems is to develop an accurate and unified picture of the outside world based on the data from any sense(s) that may be available. The availability of multiple senses presents the perceptual system with new opportunities to fulfil this goal, but exploiting these opportunities first requires the solution of two related tasks. The first is how to make the best use of any redundant information from the sensors to produce the most accurate percept of the state of the world. The second is how to interpret the relationship between observations in each modality; for example, the correspondence problem of whether or not they originate from the same source. This thesis investigates these questions using ideal Bayesian observers as the underlying theoretical approach. In particular, the latter correspondence task is treated as a problem of Bayesian model selection or structure inference in Bayesian networks. This approach provides a unified and principled way of representing and understanding the perceptual problems faced by humans and machines and their commonality. In the domain of machine intelligence, we exploit the developed theory for practical benefit, developing a model to represent audio-visual correlations. Unsupervised learning in this model provides automatic calibration and user appearance learning, without human intervention. Inference in the model involves explicit reasoning about the association between latent sources and observations. This provides audio-visual tracking through occlusion with improved accuracy compared to standard techniques. It also provides detection, verification and speech segmentation, ultimately allowing the machine to understand ``who said what, where?'' in multi-party conversations. In the domain of human neuroscience, we show how a variety of recent results in multimodal perception can be understood as the consequence of probabilistic reasoning about the causal structure of multimodal observations. We show this for a localisation task in audio-visual psychophysics, which is very similar to the task solved by our machine learning system. We also use the same theory to understand results from experiments in the completely different paradigm of oddity detection using visual and haptic modalities. These results begin to suggest that the human perceptual system performs -- or at least approximates -- sophisticated probabilistic reasoning about the causal structure of observations under the hood.

Abstract:
Studies published in the literature indicate that the use of multimedia content improves the reading performance of students with dyslexia. However, most multimedia applications use only two of the five human senses. MBook, a multisensory book developed for this work, uses an eye tracker to synchronize wind, smell, sounds, and light effects to the text being read. It was based on the hypothesis that a multisensory reading could reduce the overload in working memory, thus improving comprehension. Experimental results point to a gain in text comprehension and an increase in reading speed by the student with dyslexia when multisensory media were used. Also, the use of the tool pointed to an increase in reading motivation.

Abstract:
User’s Quality of Experience (QoE) understanding from objective metrics has been increasingly explored in multisensory research. However, capturing physiological data adds a degree of difculty to an already complex environment composed of software to reproduce content and actuators to deliver sensory effects. In this paper, we introduce the potential use of remote patient monitoring (RPM) systems to monitor users’ QoE through a specifc tool named HealthDash. We aim to raise discussion around them in digital multisensory experiences, their application, advantages and disadvantages, and challenges and opportunities.

Abstract:
Multisensory experiences have been increasingly undertaken in the digital world. With the emerging interest in immersive applications (i.e. 360 videos and virtual reality), more and more researchers and practitioners are in pursuit of ways to take these experiences to the next level, adding sensations that go beyond that of seeing and hearing. This one-day workshop aims at identifying the current practices, challenges, opportunities, and limitations to be overcome in the quest to transcend the overwhelmingly bisensorial nature of digital multimedia into a multisensory one by fostering discussions on the use of olfactory, gustatory and tactile effects in digital experiences.

Abstract:
Multisensory consumer engagement on e-commerce websites is technically limited to visual, acoustic, and written elements. Consumers communicate, buy, and share products and services via digital environments in which sensory information is limited. To improve consumers' online sensory experience, media types and the content need to be quantitatively assessed and adapted. This project aims to develop a quantitative model, an Online Sensory Marketing Index (OSMI), which assesses ecommerce websites in multisensory communication quality. The OSMI will be supported by an automatic procedure that is based on artificial intelligence. Content of texts, images, and videos is evaluated by natural language processing (NLP), natural language generation (NLG) as well as automatic machine learning (AutoML) procedures. Multiple e-commerce websites from various industries are examined.
