Electroencephalography (EEG) signals collected from human scalps are often polluted by diverse artifacts, for instance electromyogram (EMG), electrooculogram (EOG), and electrocardiogram (ECG) artifacts. Muscle artifacts are particularly difficult to eliminate among all kinds of artifacts due to their complexity. At present, several researchers have proved the superiority of combining single-channel decomposition algorithms with blind source separation (BSS) to make multichannel EEG recordings free from EMG contamination. Habitat is crucial to the survival and reproduction of individual organisms as well as persistence of populations. As such, species-habitat relationships have long been studied, particularly in the field of wildlife ecology and to a lesser extent in the more encompassing discipline of ecology. The habitat requirements of a species largely determine its spatial distribution and abundance in nature. One way to recognize and appreciate the over-riding importance of habitat is to consider that a young organism must find and settle into the appropriate type of habitat as one of the first challenges

Abstract:
AbstractClimate change is a global issue threatening food security, environmental safety, and human health in tropical and developing countries where people depend mainly on agriculture for their livelihood. Nigeria ranks among the top in the global yam production. It has the largest population in Africa and has been able to secure food for its growing population through food crops especially yam. Unfortunately, the recent increase in termites’ colonies due to climate change threatens yam yield. Besides harming man and environment, pesticides are expensive and not easily accessible to control the pests. This prompted a study which aimed at applying a biotrado-cultural approach in controlling the termites, as well as improving soil chemical properties and yam production. The study hypothesized that Chromolaena odorata and Elaeis guineensis sludge improved soil nutrient and yam yield and consequently decreased termites’ outbreak. In a randomized design experiment of five blocks and five replicates, five different treatments including unmanaged (UM), Vernonia amygdalina (VA), Chromolaena odorata (CO), Elaeis guineensis (EG) liquid sludge, and fipronil (FP) were applied in termites-infested agricultural soil. Data were collected and measured on the responses of soil chemical properties, termites, and yam yield to treatments using one-way ANOVA, regression, and multivariate analyses. The result showed that Chromolaena odorata (CO) and EG treatments were the best treatments for controlling termites and increase yam production. Termites were successfully controlled in VA and FP treatments, but the control was not commensurate with yam production. The experiment needs to be extended to other locations in the study region. It also requires an intensive and long-term investigation in order to thoroughly understand (i) the influence of climate change on the termites’ outbreak, (ii) the extent of termite damage to the crops, (iii) the impacts of climate change and variability on yam yields, (iii) the agricultural and economic benefits of the applied treatments, and (iv) the ecological and human health safety of the treatments.

Data, which is available in abundance and in accessible forms, if analyzed in an efficient manner, unfolds many patterns and promising solutions. The present world is moving from the information age to the digital age, entering a new era of analytics. Whatever the end user does is recorded and stored. The purpose of data analytics is to make the “best out of waste.” Analytics often employs advanced statistical techniques (logistic regression, multivariate regression, time series analysis, etc.) to derive meaning from data. There are essentially two kinds of analytics: 1) descriptive analytics and 2) predictive analytics. Descriptive analytics describes what has happened in the past. Predictive analytics predicts what will happen in the future.

This chapter reports on the bivariate and multivariate predictors of two of our most important outcomes—remission and recovery. In terms of time-to-remission, seven variables that span five areas of prediction were found to be significant in multivariate analyses. These areas were: lack of chronicity, good premorbid vocational functioning, no history of childhood sexual abuse, no family history of substance abuse, and three aspects of temperament. In terms of time-to-recovery, five variables that span three areas of prediction were found to be significant in multivariate analyses. These areas were: lack of chronicity, competence, and temperament. The clinical implications of these significant models and the significant bivariate predictors that did not end up in these models are discussed in detail.

Abstract:
It is well known that in decision making under uncertainty, while we are guided by a general (and abstract) theory of probability and of statistical inference, each specific type of observed data requires its own analysis. Thus, while textbook techniques treat precisely observed data in multivariate analysis, there are many open research problems when data are censored (e.g., in medical or bio-statistics), missing, or partially observed (e.g., in bioinformatics). Data can be imprecise due to various reasons, for example, due to fuzziness of linguistic data. Imprecise observed data are usually called coarse data. In this chapter, we consider coarse data which are both random and fuzzy. Fuzziness is a form of imprecision often encountered in perception-based information. In order to develop statistical reference procedures based on such data, we need to model random fuzzy data as bona fide random elements, that is, we need to place random fuzzy data completely within the rigorous theory of probability. This chapter presents the most general framework for random fuzzy data, namely the framework of random fuzzy sets. We also describe several applications of this framework.

Abstract:
Six methods for statistically identifying and quantifying meaningful species–habitat associations are discussed. These are (1) comparison among group means (e.g. ANOVA), (2) multiple linear regression, (3) multiple logistic regression, (4) classification and regression trees, (5) multivariate techniques (principal components analysis and discriminant function analysis), and (6) occupancy modeling. Each method is described in statistical detail and associated terminology is explained. The example of habitat associations of a hypothetical beetle species (from Chapter 8) is used to further explain some of the methods. Assumption, strengths, and weaknesses of each method are discussed. Related statistical constructs and procedures such as the variance–covariance matrix, negative binomial distribution, generalized linear modeling, maximum likelihood estimation, and Bayes’ theorem are also explained. Some historical context is provided for some of the methods.
