Abstract:
AbstractThe Munda languages of South Asia exhibit sound symbolism in their use of mimetic reduplication, to which they devote a surprisingly large percentage of their lexicons, typically upwards of ten percent. We present an extensive empirical typology of mimetic reduplication in seven Munda languages: Ho, Kera Mundari, Kharia, Mundari, Remo (Bondo), Santali, and Sora (Savara). Munda Mimetic forms can depict sensory qualities of sound, space, movement, texture, smell, taste, temperature, feelings, and sensations. The typology of mimetic reduplication in Munda varies across syntactic class, semantic domain and phonological form. This can shed light on the breadth of diverse structures in Munda languages, and may also be extrapolated to other languages and other examinations of reduplication and/or mimesis. This work provides a wealth of data to researchers of mimesis and reduplication, challenging the definition of what it means for forms to be sound-symbolic or reduplicated.

The present study aims at discourse analysis of Mundari Folktales of Jharkhand using sociocultural features. Discourse Analysis acts as an umbrella term for a rapidly growing field of research covering a wide range of different theoretical approaches and analytical emphases. It is assumed that different constructions of the world are represented in a number of ways. To understand different constructions, one needs to understand the factors that drive and shape the behavior of the people as individuals and collectively. The sociocultural discourse analysis focuses on the use of language as a social mode of thinking. The work of sociocultural theory is to explain how individual mental functioning is related to cultural, institutional, and historical context. This method will not only analyze words, sentences, expression, form and meaning but also analyze all kinds of social and cultural factors related to discourse. The intention behind the study is contribution to the repertoire of knowledge on Mundari folktales as an area which has remained unexplored over years. Despite being one of the major tribes of Jharkhand, these indigenous lives have not been a part of scholarly research yet. The tales are collected by different people and they are translated also but discourse study of the tales has not been dealt yet. Through the study of the tales one can learn their customs, culture, rituals, social activities and way of living. The emphases will be on analyzing people, their culture and society through the language used in the text.

Abstract:
The paper deals with the first digital corpus of texts in the Koraput Munda languages (Sora, Gutob, Bonda), which became available online in Spring 2020. Koraput Munda are spoken in India on the border between states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh and they all are more or less endangered. Texts in these languages were collected during four expeditions to the state of Odisha in 2016–2018. Koraput Munda speakers live in communities, which differ in religions, traditional occupations, dialects and are influenced by various official languages depending on the state. For example, Sora speakers belong to more than six religious communities and use four types of writing. Therefore, one of the main tasks of the corpus is to present texts of various genres and different social conditions of language usage. At the moment, the corpus includes oral and written texts, poetry and prose, religious, folklore and traditional everyday content. Oral texts are presented both in phonological transcription and in audio and video recordings. The sub-corpus of written texts presented in various scripts contains both texts related to a particular handwritten genre, as well as samples of printed materials. The texts are provided with morphological markup and translation into Russian and English. Each text is accompanied by detailed sociolinguistic and genre-specific information. One of the most special features of the corpus is the system of tags including text format, speaker’s gender, script, genre, topic, religion etc. This project is intended not only to make linguistic materials of the Koraput Munda languages accessible for the global linguistic and anthropological studies, but also to be useful for teaching and preserving cultural heritage, in particular within the framework of the Multi-Language Education government program.

The article deals with four original scripts for Munda languages, invented in the 20th century by the native speakers of Munda. These are as follows: Ol Chiki, invented by Raghunath Murmu for Santali language; Sorang Sompeng, invented by Mangei Gomango for Sora; Warang Citi, invented by Lako Bodra for Ho; Bani Hisir, invented by Rohidas Singh for Mundari. The author analyzes the structures of the character sets and makes assumptions regarding the origins of the characters. In some cases, the author proposes alternative versions of the origins of the Warang Citi script, which was widely examined by Heinz-Jürgen Pinnow. Certain characters of Sorang Sompeng might bear resemblance to the Latin script and some Indian scripts, while Bani Hisir seems to have been influenced by Ol Chiki and partly by Warang Citi.

Abstract The article, based on field data collected by the authors, analyzes the modern sociolinguistic situation of the Sora language (South Munda languages, Odisha, India) in various religious communities. The religious communities such as Baptists, Catholics, Vishwa-Hindus, Animists, Mattar Banom and Alekh are analyzed. The data on the use of various languages in the religious practices of these communities is considered, accompanied by rich illustrative material. According to the findings of the authors, the preservation of Sora is most successful in the Baptist and Mattar Banom communities.

Abstract Birhor (Birhoɽ) is a Kherwarian Munda language spoken in small enclaves in India, primarily in Hazaribagh, Ranchi, and Singhbhum districts and other small pockets in Jharkhand state. Birhor has to date been poorly documented, and even the basic properties of its core grammatical systems remain largely undescribed. All data used in this study come from field notes collected in several trips dating back to 2015. This paper is a preliminary attempt to identify the basic templatic structures of positive and negative finite conjugations in Birhor of both monovalent and polyvalent predicates. We discuss here two basic intersecting inflectional oppositions in the grammar of Birhor: (i) between perfective and imperfective tense-aspect forms (the imperfective includes imperfective and imperfect forms, and the perfective includes the past, the anterior and the perfect); and (ii) between monovalent predicates and polyvalent ones. Like all Kherwarian languages, Birhor has a nominative-accusative alignment of argument indexing and a complex templatic verb structure. It encodes subjects with monovalent stems. Polyvalent predicates encode two arguments, a first argument/syntactic subject and a second argument/syntactic ‘object’ following a primary object pattern. A complex array of different templates is thus found across positive and negative conjugations that contrast polyvalent vs. monovalent imperfective, perfective, and imperative forms. Many different formal templatic patterns are attested within each of the paradigmatic oppositional sets in Birhor. There are two formal subtypes of monovalent predicates. They contrast in both positive and negative conjugations, for both the imperfective and the perfective series of inflections. Polyvalent predicates also contrast the imperfective and the perfective series. Lastly, there are distinct templates for imperative and prohibitive of monovalent and polyvalent predicates as well.

The Dravidian language family consists of about 80 varieties (Hammarström H. 2016 Glottolog 2.7 ) spoken by 220 million people across southern and central India and surrounding countries (Steever SB. 1998 In The Dravidian languages (ed. SB Steever), pp. 1–39: 1). Neither the geographical origin of the Dravidian language homeland nor its exact dispersal through time are known. The history of these languages is crucial for understanding prehistory in Eurasia, because despite their current restricted range, these languages played a significant role in influencing other language groups including Indo-Aryan (Indo-European) and Munda (Austroasiatic) speakers. Here, we report the results of a Bayesian phylogenetic analysis of cognate-coded lexical data, elicited first hand from native speakers, to investigate the subgrouping of the Dravidian language family, and provide dates for the major points of diversification. Our results indicate that the Dravidian language family is approximately 4500 years old, a finding that corresponds well with earlier linguistic and archaeological studies. The main branches of the Dravidian language family (North, Central, South I, South II) are recovered, although the placement of languages within these main branches diverges from previous classifications. We find considerable uncertainty with regard to the relationships between the main branches.

The subject of the Indianization of the Indian languages has occupied the thoughts of scholars for more than a century. But during the last four decades it has become a field of intensive investigation. The study of the process of convergence in the Indie area began with a hesitant study of common lexical items in Indo-Aryan, Dravidian and Munda. The initial conviction was that grammatical traits may not travel across genetic boundaries. However, scholars like Kuiper and Emeneau not only proved the contrary but also laid the foundation for future research on the ‘unexpected’ structural similarities among the above–mentioned three major language families of the Indian subcontinent.

Ho language is classified as a member of the Munda group that belongs to the Austro-Asiatic branch. It is well known that Ho is very rich in agreement. The general pattern of agreement sentences of languages is that agreement is overtly realized between an argument NP and verb; subject-verb / object-verb agreement. However, agreement is not morphologically manifested and is covert if the functional head agreement is weak in Ho. Moreover, it also shows agreement phenomena in terms of [±animate] and [±human]. Therefor this paper is to layout the basic patterns of agreement with the role of [animante] and [human] in Ho.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I explore the use of copulas in non-copula constructions in the languages of South Asia to establish possible genetic and areal tendencies in the distribution. Using materials – language descriptions and data – from Grierson’s Linguistic Survey of India, I examine the phenomenon in 206 languages from four families (Munda, Dravidian, Indo-Aryan and Sino-Tibetan). It is found that the languages of South Asia appear to be more likely than the world-wide average to use the copula in non-copula constructions and that at least Munda, Dravidian and Indo-Aryan use it in the same way with regards to tense, namely in the past and present but not the future. Finally, I argue that there is some evidence supporting that the use of the copula in non-copula constructions is an areal feature, though more work is needed to make any definitive conclusions.

My fiction thesis, El mundo es mentira (The World Is a Lie), explores different voices and points of view to examine the ways in which they not only tell stories, but also generate spaces, atmospheres and, ultimately, worlds of their own. Moreover, the book aims to be a meeting ground where these voices dialogue with the voices of the literary tradition, reinterpreting and rewriting it. This collection was conceived as an experimental laboratory as well: it is comprised by short and micro-stories which question and challenge conventional forms of storytelling by incorporating poetic, memoiristic and essayistic devices.

Essa pesquisa teve por objetivo investigar as relações entre a literatura infanto-juvenil de expressão francesa e o ensino de Francês Língua Estrangeira para adolescentes. A partir da prática em sala de aula, como professora de língua francesa, e da percepção de que a língua apresentada nos manuais era uma língua exilada de sua função social e voltada sobretudo para a comunicação, buscamos identificar novas possibilidades de trabalho com o idioma numa perspectiva social e dialógica embasada nos trabalhos de Bakhtin (1999 [1930]) e de Vigotski (2008 [1930]. O fato de a nossa prática ser voltada para o público adolescente, levou-nos a perceber que o texto literário, por suas qualidades estéticas e sua polissemia, adaptou-se muito bem a nossos objetivos linguísticos e ao momento de introspecção e de ampliação da percepção do mundo externo vivenciada por essa faixa etária. Ao eleger o texto literário, pesquisamos e analisamos o que já existia de material para o trabalho de FLE com esse público. Além disso, apoiados nas pesquisas de Giasson (1990), Kato (1985) e Jouve (1992), refletimos sobre o leitor e suas estratégias de leitura, selecionamos textos, inclusive obras integrais, e propusemos percursos de compreensão desses universos linguísticos e culturais. Além disso, passamos a palavra ao aluno, por meio de questionários, e escutamos o que tinham a dizer sobre suas práticas de leitura e sobre o que experienciaram ao longo dos percursos propostos. Dessa forma, pudemos observar os resultados e pensar em novos desdobramentos.
This research aims to investigate, identify and discuss the relationship between childrens literature in the French language and the Teaching of French as a Foreign Language (L2) for the promotion of literacy acquisition for teenagers. Based on the teaching-learning practice and experiences in the classroom, as a teacher of the French language, and the perception that the language presented in textbooks language was exiled somehow, of its social approach and since literary texts do not achieve or feature much in French Language Teaching, FLT materials, but it is engaged mainly for communication instead; this research seeks to identify new opportunities to work with the language (L2) in a social more authentic, expressive, functional and dialogical trend based on the work of Bakhtin (1999 [1930]) and Vygotsky (2008 [1930]. As our teaching practice set here is focused on teenagers, it led us to realize that the literary text, due to its both, aesthetic qualities and polysemy, fits with our goals as well as language, with the moment of introspection and broadening the perception of the outside world which is experienced by age group mentioned. When electing the literary text, researched and analyzed existing material to work for this target public of FLE are meant for the understanding of the interrelated nature of the cognitive, social, linguistic literacy development of it. Moreover, drawing on research Giasson (1990), Kato (1985) and Jouve (1992), reflected on the reader and their strategies for reading selected texts, including whole works, original masterpieces and propose paths understanding of these linguistic and cultural universes. Through questionnaires, our students were given the voice so that we could hear and feel the stream of it and get to find out what our target public had to say about their reading practice and what they have experienced over the proposed guided reading, in order to reap the rewards of the teaching-learning process and think of new challenges and achievement.

Visa-se estudar as cantigas de Capoeira Angola e descobrir um pouco mais sobre seus mitos e ensinamentos que muitas vezes funcionam como instrumento de transmissão de uma tradição ancestral que resiste até hoje, que interage com a cultura e a oralidade brasileiras enriquecendo-as e, que diante dessa interação por meio de conhecimentos que são passados em situações múltiplas de comunicação forma novos capoeiristas angoleiros. Procura-se demonstrar como os cânticos da roda de capoeira denominados “ladainha”, “corrido” e “louvação” podem ser analisados como parte da poesia oral afrobrasileira, pois de antemão já se sabe que os mesmos possuem forma e conteúdo essencialmente enraizados na arte poética. Tais cânticos são providos de ritmo, rimas, musicalidades, gestos, olhares e ambiguidades de vários tipos inerentes ao contexto da roda onde se desenvolve o discurso do canto, revelando uma dupla faceta uma poética e outra dinâmica do mesmo fenômeno. Ainda procura-se ilustrar parte da representação que a Capoeira Angola tem no mundo atualmente. Convém destacar a cotidiana relação que se estabelece com o seu universo por meio de treinamentos e trocas coletivas. Experiências de grandes mestres e mestras da Capoeira Angola contribuíram para o desenvolvimento deste trabalho, pois como aqui tratamos de um saber específico, inevitavelmente em muitas etapas debruçamo-nos diante de seus detentores para então se entender pequenos pedaços de sua magia, que como já se sabe de antemão, é simples, porém reflete sentidos profundos
The aim is to study the songs of Capoeira Angola and discover a little more about their myths and teachings which often act as instrument of transmission of an ancestral tradition that endures until today, that interacts with the Brazilian culture and orality and enriching them, interacting through knowledge that are passed in multiple situations of communication creating new players of capoeira angola. It seeks to demonstrate how the chants of wheel called ladainha, louvação and corridos can be analyzed as part of the oral poetry: struggling, because beforehand is already known that they have the form and content essentially rooted in the poetic art. Such songs are fitted with pace, rhymes, gestures, looks and ambiguities of various types inherent in the context of the wheel where develops the chant speech, revealing a dual facet a poetic and other dynamics of the same phenomenon. It still seeks to illustrate part of the representation that Capoeira Angola has in the world today. Everyday should highlight the relationship that is established with his universe through collective exchanges and trainings. Experiences of grandmasters and master of Capoeira Angola contributed to the development of this work, because here we treat a specific knowledge, inevitably in many steps focusing on their holders to then understand small pieces of their magic, which as already known beforehand, is simple, but reflects deep meanings

Lino Novas Calvo (1903-1983) is by many considered the best Cuban short story writer. Critics acknowledge his major contribution to the modernization of narrative prose in that country. With Cayo Canas and La Luna Nona, the short story achieved a language of its own, a precise technique, an acute outlook and an awareness of its own individual art form. Nevertheless, his novels and short stories have not received the recognition and the distribution they deserve, in part because his books have not been reprinted. The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the innovative character of Novas Calvo's work. From the starting point of traditional discourse, he gathered together the main tendencies that until then co-existed in Cuban literature (realism, social criticism, criollismo, Afro Cuban themes and cosmopolitism) and renewed them with modem contributions, mainly assimilated from American authors writing between the two World Wars. He based himself in a concept of realism that does not limit itself to recreating reality and that eludes language localisms and the portrayal of environments. He brought Cuban characters and themes to his stories which at the same gave them a universal Dimension. Novas Calvo participated in debates which amounted to a rupture between tradition and localism and brought universality to the Cuban short story. This achieved the aesthetic syncretism imposed by modernity.

Um dos desafios das pesquisas na Ãrea de Processamento de Linguagem Natural (PLN) à prover recursos semÃntico-linguÃsticos que expressem conhecimento de mundo para suportar tarefas como: extraÃÃo de informaÃÃo, recuperaÃÃo de informaÃÃo, sistemas de perguntas e respostas, sumarizaÃÃo de textos, anotaÃÃo semÃntica de textos, dentre outras. Para esse desafio este trabalho propÃe estratÃgias para aquisiÃÃo de conhecimento de mundo. Propomos dois mÃtodos. O primeiro à um mÃtodo semiautomÃtico que tem como ideia principal utilizar um processo de raciocÃnio semÃntico sobre o conhecimento prÃ-existente em uma base semÃntica. O segundo à um mÃtodo de aquisiÃÃo automÃtica que utiliza a WikipÃdia para a geraÃÃo de conteÃdo semÃntico. A WikipÃdia foi utilizada como fonte de conhecimento devido à confiabilidade, dinamicidade e abrangÃncia de seu conteÃdo. Neste trabalho propomos um mÃtodo para aquisiÃÃo de relaÃÃes semÃnticas entre conceitos a partir de textos de artigos da WikipÃdia que faz uso de um conhecimento implÃcito existente na WikipÃdia e em sistemas hipermÃdia: os links entre artigos. Ao longo do texto descritivo de um artigo da WikipÃdia aparecem links para outros artigos que sÃo evidÃncias de que hà uma relaÃÃo entre o artigo corrente e o outro artigo referenciado pelo link. O mÃtodo proposto objetiva capturar a relaÃÃo semÃntica expressa no texto entre eles (artigo corrente e link para outro artigo), sem expressÃes regulares identificando relaÃÃes similares atravÃs de uma medida de similaridade semÃntica.
One of the challenges of research in Natural Language Processing(NLP) is to provide semantic and linguistic resources to express knowledge of the world to support tasks such as Information Extraction, Information Retrieval systems, Questions & Answering, Text Summarization, Annotation Semantics of texts, etc. For this challenge this work proposes strategies for acquiring knowledge of the world. We propose two methods. The first is a semi-automatic method that has main idea of using a semantic reasoning process on pre-existing knowledge base semantics. The second is an acquisition method that utilizes automatic Wikipedia for generating semantical content. Wikipedia was used as a source of knowledge because of the reliability, dynamism and scope of its content. In this work we propose a method for acquiring semantic relations between concepts from the texts of Wikipedia articles that makes use of an implicit knowledge that exists in Wikipedia and in hypermedia systems: links between articles. Throughout the descriptive text of a Wikipedia article appear links to other articles that are evidence that there is a relationship between the current article and another article referenced by the link. The proposed method aims to capture the semantic relationship expressed in the text between them (current article and link to another article), no regular expressions identifying similar relationships through a semantic similarity measure.

Abstract:
Genetic and geological studies reveal that following the melting of snows 22,000 years ago, the post Ice-age Sundaland peoples’ migrations as well as other peoples’ migrations spread the ancestors of the two distinct ethnic groups Austronesian and Austroasiatic to various East and South–East Asian countries. Some of the Austroasiatic groups must have migrated to Northeast India at a later date, and whose descendants are today’s Munda-speaking people of Northeast, East and Southcentral India. Language is the store-house of one’s ancestral knowledge, the community’s history, its skills, customs, rituals and rites, attire and cuisine, sports and games, pleasantries and sorrows, terrain and geography, climate and seasons, family and neighbourhoods, greetings and address-forms and so on. Language loss leads to loss of social identity and cultural knowledge, loss of ecological knowledge, and much more. Linguistic hegemony marginalizes and subdues the mother-tongues of the peripheral groups of a society, thereby the community’s narratives, histories, skills etc. are erased from their memories, and fabricated narratives are created to replace them. Each social-group has its own norms of extending respect to a hearer, and a stranger. Similarly there are social rules of expressing grief, condoling, consoling, mourning and so on. The emergence of nation-states after the 2nd World War has made it imperative for every social group to build an authentic, indigenous narrative with intellectual rigour to sustain itself politically and ideologically and progress forward peacefully. The present essay will attempt to introduce variants of linguistic-anthropology practiced in the West, and their genesis and importance for the Asian speech communities. An attempt shall be made to outline a Khymer narrative with inputs from Khymer History, Art and Architecture, Agriculture and Language, for the scholars to take into account, for putting Cambodia on the path to peace, progress and development.

Abstract:
This paper is concerned with the nature of ‘front’ along the front/back axis. The languages taken up for the study are Bengali, a language belonging to Indo-Aryan language family, and Kannada, a language belonging to Dravidian language family. The terms for denoting ‘front’ for Bengali are ‘samne’ and ‘aage’ and for Kannada are ‘yeduru’ and ‘munde’. Experience and embodiment of spatial arrangements play an important role in the spatial cognition, and language use takes into account the different points of view. Many factors such as proximity, vantage point, specificity, etc. play an important role in describing a given situation. It is worth mentioning that the choice of the usages of the words for denoting ‘front’ as location or direction has been seen as different in some situations and overlapping in others. The data were collected using a questionnaire which aimed to elicit the expressions for ‘front’ for the entities, whose relationship is described in terms of Figure and Ground (Talmy, 1983; 2000), from the speakers of both the above mentioned languages, and then analysed for the factors involved.

We present a novel real-time, collaborative, and interactive AI painting system, Mappa Mundi, for artistic Mind Map creation. The system consists of a voice-based input interface, an automatic topic expansion module, and an image projection module. The key innovation is to inject Artificial Imagination into painting creation by considering lexical and phonological similarities of language, learning and inheriting artist’s original painting style, and applying the principles of Dadaism and impossibility of improvisation. Our system indicates that AI and artist can collaborate seamlessly to create imaginative artistic painting and Mappa Mundi has been applied in art exhibition in UCCA, Beijing.

Abstract:
The use of storytelling and digital art as tools to understand a migrant family’s life path will be in the center of an innovative methodology that will ensure the acquisition of multilingual skills and the development of plurilingual awareness, reinforcing the various dimensions of language (aesthetic and emotional, in addition to cognitive), in a creative, collaborative and interdisciplinary work environment. This is especially important among students who are not likely to receive further language training. It is not yet clear how teachers can explore multilingual experiences of learners, both in terms of language learning dimensions but also related with the multiple cognitive connections and representations, as well as to the awareness of language diversity. The JASM (Janela aberta sobre o mundo: línguas estrangeiras, criatividade multimodal e inovação pedagógica no ensino superior) project involves a group of students of the 1st cycle in Media Studies, from the School of Education of Viseu, who will work using photography, digital art and cultural communication, collecting information pertaining to diversified cultural and linguistic contexts of the city of Viseu (Beira Alta, Portugal), both in French and English, centered on a tradition or ritual of a migrant family. Based on an interview, students write the story (in French and English) of the life of migrants and use photography to highlight the most relevant aspect of the migrant’s family life. Using as a starting point an object associated with religion, tradition or a ritual, students create an animated film, in both languages. This approach will allow the exploration of culture and digital scenography, integrating in an innovative interdisciplinary pathway, digital art, multilingual skills and multicultural awareness. Students’ learning progress and teacher roles are assessed during this process, using tests from the beginning to the end of the project.
