Full textFor many critics, L. Thoma (1867-1921) is a regional writer. No doubt he knew the country and the people he often portrayed in his works perfectly. However, the role of Munich in his writing also has to be highlighted. Thoma's work is most varied: to his many contributions as a journalist for the Simplicissimus, the Marz and the Miesbacher Anzeiger, we must add his stories, plays and novels. To analyze the image of Munich, we have relied on the whole of Thoma's works. Our study revolves around the threefold examination of the social, political and cultural life. Starting from essential aspects of the social reality of Munich at the turn of the century our purpose has been to analyze the various social classes depicted by Thoma. In his fairly complete depiction, the working class is remarkably missing. This work also looks at the image of the great city in contrast to the countryside which raises the problem of the so called perversity of the modern metropolis. After clarifying the political role of Munich, we have aimed at showing the consequences of Bavarian politics on Thoma's work. Although as a journalist, he often satirized the berlin politics, the Bavarian parliament, some parliamentarians and other members of the government belonging to the Zentrum were not spared either. The image of the Zentrum conveyed through the fictive character Filser is particularly worth studying. The major political events contemporary of Thoma's life have also been included. Finally, after assessing Munich’s artistic role and its influence in Germany, we have considered Thoma's position as regards the importance given to the main arts (literature, painting, music, the cinema)

Full textThis dissertation, which is based on the work and correspondence of the poet Heinrich Heine, underlines the significance of his stay in Munich in 1827-28 in his personal development and his intellectual career, through an analysis of the political and cultural context of the Bavarian capital and a study of the various personalities he encountered. The reign of King Ludwig I (1825-1848) receives particular attention, since it provides the background to the reminiscences of Munich in Heine's work. Examining the reasons for these reminiscences involves drawing a comparison between his personal view on the country and the realities of the time and exploring how his stay modified his perception of the kingdom. This analysis of the influence of a city on a writer eventually gives a comprehensive historical, cultural and political portrait of Bavaria and Munich in the first half of the 19th century

Full textThis thematic study analyses the phenomenon of literary secularization and the sacred manifestations in the German expressionistic theatre throughout about fifty plays, in particular three main authors: Georg Kaiser, Ernst Toller and Ernst Barlach. The different forms of literary secularization are shown: allusion, variation on biblical characters or themes and structural variation in the case of the "stationendrama", interpreted as the transfer of a religious structure (the passion) into a dramatic structure. A functional typologie is established from these forms, with three functions: referential, parodical and blasphemous function. On the oher hand, the expressionistic theatre expresses the sacralization of the secular world and the realization, here and now, of the message of love and hope in the gospel. The ideal of the "new man", the communal utopia and the theatrical experience, conceived as a communion, illustrate that. The conception of the sacred is shown by the role of the irrational, of the immanence and subjective experience of the religious sphere

Full textThe present work concerne the evolution of the image of morocco and its litterature in the german-speaking world. From the middle ages to the enlightenment, through the colonial era to the modern age. Morocco is presented through of thematically diverse variety of literary genres. In the beginning it typified the muslim world seen as a threat to christianity, where moors, arabs and black africans (mohren) constitued a brutal, warlike civilisation steeped in luxury and sensuality. During the colonial epoch, it came to be consideres ideal ground for geographical or ethnological research and discovery to the benefit of germany's very real colonialist ambitions. Up until after the end of the second world war. Morocco's image in germany was heavily and contradictionly influenced by anti-french propaganda, split between solidarity with moroccan rebellion and popular ressentment towards the moroccan infantrymen present in germany's french-occupied zone. As mythic setting for the quest for identity. Morocco is perceived in many contemporary german publications through toponymical evocation of such cities as casablanca, tangier or marrakesh. The german vision of the extreme north-west of africa resis diveded between typical', exotic and repulsion. Nonetheless, morocco interests the germans in general as a vessel for the orientalising imagination, an imagination nourished since the end of the 80s by the succes of several works by moroccan authors translated into german. Wich have ied a number of publishers and translators to view morocco both as literary territory waiting to be discovered and as a source of works to meet the expectations of german-speaking readers

Full textThe cultural policy of the GDR after 1976 excluded numerous young writers from the official literary life and thereby enforced the development of a parallel literary scene in which revues were edited by the authors themselves. These journals can be compared to the samizdat and represent an unique treasure today. Applying the model of the literay field (Bourdieu) to the GDR, the place of this self-edited literature is defined as a sub-field which gained autonomy inside the - highly heteronomous - literary field of the GDR. This approach has been linked to the theorie of heterotopia (Foucault) in order to describe the specific features of these microcosms within their society. Heterotopia as an approach to the world and a way of thinking dissociating from the idea of reconciliating utopias describes the dicursive production of revues and literary works which has been analysed in this theses for the works of Bert Papenfuß and Barbara Köhler

Full textThe thesis studies the linguistics, philosophy and aesthetics of literary language of the madman in the Romantic era. It focuses on The Devil's Elixirs (Hoffmann, 1815), The Crumb Fairy (Nodier, 1832), The Diary of a Madman (Gogol, 1835), The Sylph (Odoevsky, 1837) and Aurelia (Nerval, 1855). Other narratives are more promptly summoned, as The Night Watches (Bonaventura, 1804) or Louis Lambert (Balzac, 1832). The madman is a problematic being: he is both unhealthy and inhabited by a divine inspiration. This paradox finds a new relevance in the first half of the nineteenth century. On the one hand, the development of Alienism tends to define mental pathologies from a medical point of view. On the other hand, the birth of the Fantastic promotes the figure of the mad artist. The Madman, when he speaks, questions autobiographical writing and redefines the Self, Space and Time. His speech has pragmatic issues: the madman seeks to demonstrate that he is not mad, in a society which condemns him. He also endeavours to convey a truth. His language is then used to describe the mythical forces that travel the world and, perhaps, to recreate it. The notion of creation is essential. The Romantic era modifies the definition of literature, which loses its representative function in favour of a purely linguistic function. The speech of the madman takes part in the founding of new aesthetics: it creates it in a critical gesture that questions its legitimacy. Impossible and unthinkable, it embodies the "silent speech" (J. Rancière) that becomes modern literature

Full textThis thesis examines Italy's presence in German philosophy and literature since the end of the 18th century, with a special emphasis on Goethe’s and Nietzsche’s work. Goethe’s Italian Voyage at the end of the 18th century and Nietzsche’s perpetual errancy during his sojourn in Italy betweeen 1872 and 1889 already hint at the particular role of Italy, and of the South in general, in German culture. The thesis questions the notion of Heimat, and its particular meaning for Goethe and Nietzsche, while at the same time elaborating on their understanding of the South both as a travel destination or an exile place. The psychological aspect of these voyages, together with Switzerland’s transit position, are also brought into question. The research concludes with a focus on the transformations in the Italian history between the Goethe’s and Nietzsche’s periods, as well as on the idea of Europe through their visions in Italy
Paris, EHESS, 2006. http://www.theses.fr/2006EHES0065.
Full textMunich, January 1896 : the arrival of "Jugend - Illustrated Magazine for Art and Life" causes a kind of cultural, aesthetic and social landslide. An unheard-of large scale mixture of texts and images, it claims to be open for all styles, anti-Wilhelmine but patriotic, liberal thus anti-clerical. Its conceptual name synonymous with coutinuous revival and eternal youth forms its platform. On a first view, the number of angels even of singular appearance and irregularly entering the scene, is perplexing. An interdisciplinary approach, regarding these angelic figures who are, at the same time, close to and distant from their religious point of reference, under a double long-term focus - of history of art and of anthropology of religion - illumates their being appropriated for reasons of the cult of art, as well as the will of situating them in the centre of a modernism with vanguard and eschatological pretense
